There I was climbing out from 157 headed to that big dar bar at 147. The 80th Headhunters had a small presence up with Shuff and Zap following me out. Things were in place for a good fight it appeared. But then! The baby struck! The sounds of a small wannabe Mustang pilot crying in his crib forced me to autoclimb and a quick run upstairs to check on the little boy. Despite all efforts to get him back to sleep it wasn't working. So son in hand I head back down to the computer to say goodnight and see what wreckage was left of my 38G.
Much to my surprise I'm 23K over 147 with all kinds of red below me. Now I've got a fussy 8 month old in my right arm so I'm not exactly ready for combat, but I kick off the DTs and nose down throttled back so I don't compress the old 38G into the dirt. All the while the little guy is crying and trying to get comfortable on dad's shoulder. But no a Tiffie appears and the fight is on. Since I can't. really work the throttle I'm going over the top alot to bleed off speed and start back down again. Finally the tiffie runs. I'm gaining quickly but with a figity baby it makes it hard for a lousy shot on a good day to get hits. FInally the 20mm hit the Tiff's right wing and off it comes. But what's this? Low on the water? Why it;s a goon. The Tiffie had taken me right to him. What the heck, I can shoot down a goon while trying to keep a baby calm. I pull in behind him and boom, down he goes. The little one is getting madder about not getting to sleep so I race head on in towards our field only to be met, HO'd and rammed by another Tiffie so down I went.
But it was my first two kills with a tiny co-pilot crying in my ear the entire time. I can see the book title now. "Matthew was my Co-Pilot" by CorkyJr. The inspiring tale of wet diapers, drool, spit up and tears as a young fighter pilot trys to bring his newest addition to the squadron up to speed.
Its a beautiful thing :)

Im goin threw that right now myself, my 7 week old sits next to me in his bouncy chair everynight while the wife sleeps. Always seems to start crying right as the enemy get into icon range. So I fight with my riight hand on the stick, and my left hand on the co pilot trying to calm his combat jitters. Thought it was airsickness at first, but realized it had to be his radar. Good co pilots are hard to find. Airman Wyatt, fighter jock in training.

When my Grandaughter was about five she lived with us. Some of my most memorable sortees were with her in my lap screaming "get him Gran-pa!, Get him Gran-pa!, get him!, get him, eeeeeeeehhehehehehe, you got him!!!" then screaming to Gran-ma "He got him !" I was a hero in those days. She's nine now and more interested girlie things, but she still asks when I see her if I got anybody. :D
Great times ahead Dan. :aok

Touching story. Only one kid on your lap.... piece of cake.

My son is just about 4 months old . The only way I fly now is if he sleeping or on my lap. It's great I wouldn't have it any other way.

LOL. Great story. I have a five week old and she absolutely hates the computer room. The second I take her in there she starts crying. She must know how much her daddy dies in there….
Here she is when she is not in the study...

Well, maybe a little! Actualy, I decorated his room in race cars, with lots of pics of Vettes, ALMS racecars, World Challenge, as well as plenty of framed pics of his old man wheeling his old race cars around to two regional road race championships (SCCA and NASA). He loves cars, still, but he found a lot of my old aviation mags from when I used to fly and the same bug that bit me years ago got him by the rear end. It's in our DNA. I'm sure we're all a different sub-species in actuallity!

It's WAR boys...don't be a popsicle about it....scrape up your plane...learn a little more and go back at it...consider yourself lucky...when shot down in the real war you're burired...if they found enough of you to bury!! Have fun...it's what it's it's meant to be!

I had a good wingie for a long time in my oldest son Andrew. It's been 3 and a half years since I lost him at 21 in a car wreck. He was a good AH stick. Matthew is 8 months old today and I'm sure he'll end up winging old Dad some day too.
This was Drew and I back in the old days of AH. Some great memories :)

I looked forward to every sonogram, and I was at every sonogram. Got a 3d Sono a month before birth. My first, at 38, bout stinking time.
Sonograms rule.

I've a boy of 2, if he is in the room with me he wants to take control of my plane...(proably do a better job than me :D)
if i can fend him off the joystick he starts on the keyboard or throttle...
gets confusing but he sure is keen...<S> to the eager co pilots out there
( the Mrs is droppin the next in 2months time so i will have to learn to juggle too)

Flights such as these never end...they are kept alive as was in ww1 and ww2 with love and rememberance by those left behind as they went forward to the next level.
Many were lost then for one reason or another, which then, as does now seemed so senseless and unfair.
Keep their memory alive with your endurance, your passion, which you passed to him, and your love of life which you obviously have.
No thoughts of sorrow for you...only wishes of the best for your (and my) remaining time here as well as congrats for , I'm sure, 21 wonderfull years!
Snarglie
P.S. If I've offended U in any way with my comments, please forgive me...It's the only thing I could say.

I hope AH is still around when I have a son. After we get tired of playing catch (football or baseball... depending on the time of year) in the backyard we can come in and wing together for a bit in 38's, before wife/mom ack gets one hit kills on us. :D
That's only 20-25 years away... :lol
-
before wife/mom ack gets one hit kills on us. :D
You'll have to plan a NOE mission beneath the windows and milk-run your way into the computer room. All that without flashing the miss's radar :aok

:lol I would have both my girls when they were 2 and 3 sitting in my lap doing this.... :lol Very memorable.
I taught them how to drive GV's, they really enjoyed that. They still fly every now and then and usually end up darting, I can tell when they say "Daddy it wont go up" :lol
-
"Daddy it wont go up" :lol
That's better to hear than "Doctor, it won't go up!" !
