a truck to be exact.. I need something besides a 2 seater sports car with no trunk... im 28 for gods sake.. time to grow up :lol
Ive always been totally against buying brand new vehicles, considering a low mileage used vehicle is usually MUCH cheaper..
BUT
Considering most dealerships are now offering 0% interest, and now with the stimulus there is a tax credit on the sales tax.. you can buy a new car and get it financed for out to 5 years, pay no interest on the loan and pay no sales tax :huh
I just seems like too good of a deal to pass up..
anyone else "bit by the new car bug"?
The only thing holding me back, is I REALLY enjoy not having a car payment..
-
Save the payments up and pay with cash.

You're young and you buy a car you want.
Then, someone convinces you to grow up.
Then, at some point, you grow up, realize you wish you were young again, and buy what you want.
Point? Buy what you want :) Your gonna spend most of your life "old" and eternity as dust. You want a truck?
1956 Ford, buy one that runs, have a blast with it. Instead of monthly payments, put 400 a month into doing something fun with it.
Keep the 2 seater for when you need 2 months to swap the cam :rofl
-
Buy an old 60 series Toyota Land Cruiser if you want a real truck. They're a little old, the stylings a bit off and the mileage sucks, but it'll last forever, has plenty of room, and is tough and rugged, with some of the best 4WD performance around. I got one :D 1990 Land Cruiser with an Auto tranny. Best truck I've ever had. Though, I'm 16 and it's my only car, and will remain so for quite a long time. Regardless. You want a real truck, get that. Although, if by truck, you mean pickup truck, get a Land Cruiser. They're better anyway. :rock
-
Right now you could get a good used truck for next to nothing. Also, I've seen f150s for a hair over 10k brand new.
-
you could not give me an F150

I was hit by the new car bug, bought a new bike instead though. The wife ack was thrilled.

You guys should hassle your Ford dealers about getting these:
270kw, 0-60 in 5.5 seconds.
Turbo charged 4.0 litre straight 6.
Only does 2 litres per hundered kilometers more than the gay little fuel sipping trendy cars these days.
Prices start in the low $30k AUD mark for the non-turbo version.

what he said, we have an old (2002 I think) non turbo xr-6 ute as the work vehicle. Always fights at work about who's going to do deliveries, buy milk and coffee etc. etc.Its a fun car to drive

If that car was sold in the US, I might have considered it instead of my Subaru Baja.

However, my Baja has a full backseat in addition to the truck bed.

If your looking for a new truck I have a 2006 Toyota Tacoma crew cab prerunner long bed. I have owned many trucks Ford, Chevy and other Toyota's. This by far is the best truck I have owned. It has power, drives like a car and has a nice towing capacity. It comes with a towing package and I have towed my Airstream through the desert climbing without the temp needle moving at all. I had a 3/4 Chevy and Ford overheat under the same conditions. I have 80,000 miles and the only thing I have done (other than periodic maintenance) is change tires. I sold all of my us built trucks by 80,000 miles. Had to start putting money into them.

I'm looking at buying a pontiac G8 GT... 361 hp in a reasonably modern 4-door sedan. It doesn't have in-dash GPS navigation though, so I'm debating buying now with the current $3000 off of invoice pricing or hold out until they add a nav system and pay a bunch extra.
If I'd never used an in-car GPS nav then it wouldn't even be a question, I'd buy now. But my wife's civic has GPS nav and it's great, very helpful. It saved us on one vacation when we had to drive through an ice storm on the way to the airport and some retard blocked a high bridge on a 2-lane road with no way to bypass. We hit the detour button and blindly followed the gps directions down some farm roads, and got to the airport less than 15 minutes later than if we'd been able to take the highway.
The huge discount right now is attractive though... The first dealer I went to didn't even show me the retail sticker since he knew I'd done my homework. He pulled up the current pricing on his computer showing me "retail" and "invoice" pricing, and said he'd apply the $3000 GM incentive to the invoice. Most dealers will start with retail, chop off some nebulous "special deal just for you my friend", and only then apply the incentive. But this guy went straight for invoice minus incentive, and was honest about not being able to go lower without cutting into the dealer specific incentives GM uses just to keep dealers in business.

QFT. My first car was 20 when I sold it to my brother (who's wife wrecked it a week later), and my current car is over 12 years old. But I gotta get a car that transports kids easier.

do your home work - edmonds, kbb - and talk "out the door price"
they are hard up to sell - walk out the first visit - they'll call you with a better offer

That toyota doesn't look bad. When talking about trucks, I've always been a dodge guy. Cummings diesel hehe.
-
I have looked at Tacomas and Tundras in the not too distant past. Compared to what the domestics had to offer, it was looking like a good choice until I got to test drive some out. Are they still not made to comfporitabley fit a 6'4" driver?... a problem all Toyotas have since I last looked.
-
The 05 and later tacomas are much larger inside and out than the previous year models. I'm 6"1 and I fit with no problems whatsoever.

That thing would have to be fast for me to drive it, so nobody I knew would have time to recognize me.

A friend of mine has one and it's the top of the line. Now I know why Dodge is offering $10,000 off on their trucks. The interior is terrible, some of the cheesiest materials are used. If I were in the market for a diesel truck Dodge would be my last choice. Ford's engine is from International and Chevy's is a Japanese and both are 8 cyl not 6, plus the Chevy has the Allison trannie.

When Chrysler gets itself sorted out, they were considering whether or not to build this little beastie.. It would be on the JK Wrangler Unlimited chassis. Wrangler sales, by the way, are up 17% over 2008.

I can cruise at 75mph with almost 0 wind or road noise, have a smooth comfortable ride, have about as many mechanical problems as an anvil, and get 20mpg... lets see a jeep do that.
-
For fencing work we used a Toyota Hilux for years. Best truck i ever drove. Very durable, the TV show Top Gear famously threw a hilux off a mulitstory building and still managed to start the engine and make it run afterwards. Its cheap, very practical for carrying tools and materials, plus women love a man who feels like king of the road more than a mini cooper driver. :)

You don't buy a Wrangler for its road manners anymore than you would buy a Harley for its weather proofing. You buy a Wrangler because as delivered, it's the most capable off road vehicle you can find in a new car showroom at any price.
That said, I have not had a single warranty issue whatsoever with my 2008. Flawless to date. I also manage just over 25 mpg on the highway. I can install the 3-piece Freedom hard top for winter, and the soft top for warmer weather. Top down, on the beach just after sunrise is great fun.
If you haven't driven a newer Wrangler JK series, you would be shocked at the refinement. Compared to the previous TJ series (production ended with 2006 model year), it's like comparing a Cadillac to a Chevy. This is my third Jeep (previously owned a '63 CJ-5 and a '92 YJ Wranger) and it is so much better than the '92 it's difficult to express.
There's nothing wrong with the double-cab Taco. It's a fine pickup. Reliable, well built, great resale and offers terrific utility. Granted, the Taco is a bit overdue for an update, but it's still a great truck. It's all about what you want to do with it. Yours is great for daily use. It isn't set up for anything beyond mild off road use, but that's perfectly ok for most Taco owners (those side steps wouldn't survive a moderately tough trail).
If I needed a mid-size pickup, I'd look at Toyota first. Then probably Suzuki, as they sell a rebranded Nissan Frontier, but with a much better warranty than Nissan offers.
I bought a Wrangler (2 dr) because I have no kids in the house now, and I wanted something for me that could go anywhere, anytime and do so without a roof or doors should the weather be nice. Nothing else on four wheels can do that.
If Chrysler builds the JT pickup in the future, I might consider one.
Funny story... My wife and I were touring the Poconos last September. The weather was warm and we wanted to drive to Jim Thorp, PA for breakfast. So, I took down the top and removed both doors. We were staying in a Comfort Inn. As I walked to the elevator with each door, the looks I got from patrons in the breakfast room was priceless. I had stopped at the desk and asked if they would mind if I stored the doors in our room. The manager laughed and said sure, it would be ok. "We get groups of Jeepers in here all the time."
Cruising along in the crisp mountain early morning air, top down, doors off, was marvelous.

Widewing, That is bee u tee full! I would prefer a little more seating though.
Own a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 164k miles on it. Still running strong although I have put some work into lately, new window motor and new tie rod ends. She's paid off though. God love it.

that was all that needed to be said right there :lol
Wranglers are among the best "out of the box" offroad ready vehicles.. but considering this comes at the cost of virtually everything else the "value" you get from them is meh.. they are very specialized, a absolute blast off road in the mud and rocks, pull back onto paved roads and they are among the most horrid vehicles to daily drive.. rough bellybutton ride, few amenities, piss poor gas mileage, hideous wind noise. etc etc . driving one 100 miles on the highway in one stretch should qualify a person for some sort of iron man award.

With older Wranglers, I would agree. My YJ was a rough ride. My CJ-5 was heavily modified. Body lift, suspension lift, dual steering dampers, 36" Cepeks and roll cage. A Turbo Buick was stuffed under the hood. It was a torturous vehicle to drive for more than a few hours at a time.
However, the new JK Wranglers are different animals altogether. With the hard top installed it's quiet, very quiet. A smooth 3.8 liter V6 offers decent power and proven reliability. Handling is vastly better than the YJ and TJ. The interior is roomy, very well appointed and comfortable. We've driven it for an entire day, and we were no more fatigued than if we had driven our Japanese sedan. The new JKs are more capable both off and on the road. They are extremely agile, being very maneuverable with a very small turning circle and quick steering ratio.
Stop by a dealer and take one for a test drive. You will be shocked at how refined they are.
My Wrangler gets better fuel mileage than a V6 Taco (I average 24.8 mpg on the highway using cruise control). I have a terrific sound system (6 CD changer with 6 speakers and subwoofer). I have power steering, 8 way adjustable seats, A/C, full console, four airbags, rear wiper/washer, fully carpeted, leather wrapped steering wheel, Cruise Control, trip/mileage computer, and you can order power windows, driving lamps, remote starting, power entry/alarm, Nav system, dual zone climate control and many other amenities.
Wranglers have 4 wheel, power disk brakes with ABS and Brake Assist. They are equipped with ESP, roll mitigation, traction control and hill assist. You can order locker Dana 44 axles, Trac-Loc, Tru-Lok, 4:10 gears with crawl ratio transfer case. All JK Wranglers have Brake Lock Differentials. If you think that the 2 door Wrangler rides a bit choppy, buy the 4 door on the extended wheelbase.

Widewing

LMFAO. The Tacoma isn't even a full size truck (ripping on the F-150) and you will now (if you bought a used one) have to possibly deal with frame rust issues. Which leads one to this, if a frame cannot be manufactured properly. "What else did they cut corners on?"

Where do you get your information from? Sure the 93-06 Wranglers were not fun on the highway because they were leaf-sprung. But the 97-Up TJ's and JK's are coil sprung and VERY WELL MANNERED on the highway.
You seem to be the type that already KNOWS what he wants, but would rather get the peanut gallery's opinions and flame them.
I daily drove a 1983 CJ7 for two years on the highway, surface streets with no issues. It was a soft ride and not choppy. If some of your friends have that issue, they bought cheap sh*t and "you get what you for." I now have a 95 Grand Cherokee with a 3" lift and have had it up to 80mph on the freeway, with no issues, ride quality is superior.
My buddy's 97 Wrangler has a 6.5" Long Arm lift on 35's. It is very smooth and will rival whatever "Toyota" you purchase. For the record, if you're looking at "ride comfort from a pickup", buy a car. You buy a pickup because you haul sh*t, nothing more.

Don't bother with those "namby-pamby `lil boy trucks...get yourself a REAL "in-yer-face" truck! My neighbors hate noisy trucks..so, I bought 2, loud, stinky, noisy, diesel trucks....a Ford King Ranch for me and a Dodge 3500 LARAMIE, QUAD CAB, for my wife. :devil
Oh yeah, these trucks will work the "nuts" off those other "namby-pamby `lil boy trucks. :P

That is one seriously cool JEEP. I traded my '06 Wrangler in on an '07 Magnum R/T because (despite being 1000 pounds heavier) the HEMI wagon gets way better mileage than the V-6 in the Wrangler. If they put the HEMI in it, bye bye Magnum. :)
