Title: More skins
Post by: Motherland on April 26, 2009, 07:08:50 PM
It would be nice if we could have more skins per plane. As it is many of the plane slots are full or almost full (most German & American fighters have reached this point, as well as many of the Spitfires and others). I understand that we already have a large amount of data used by skins (IIRC skuzzy said it was something like 3 gigs for all of them). Obviously, at current the 15 skin per plane limit makes sense.

However, I was thinking; when we submit a skin we are only supposed to submit the files we changed. So you submit the external plane bitmap, material text file and object text file (I think that's what you call it, it's the name of the skin). Anyway, these files are 1MB, less than 1KB and the same respectively. So you have little over a megabyte of unique data for each skin. Would it not be possible, logical even to have the skins loaded the same way? If you have 30 skins/plane, (twice the current limit!) and all the planes are filled up (like that would ever happen :D ) and there are 95 planes/vehicles (I don't remember how many there are...) that's 2.85GB of unique files. I think by the point we get to that point that that would be a pretty insubstantial amount of memory.

So, would this be possible? Or no?

I think someone a while back said that, for example, HTC should bring the P-51K for the sole purpose of skinning, same plane(except for the prop) which would then double the amount of skin slots for the P-51. Its a good idea, and would allow for 32(defaults included) skins on the 51.

That would be possible to my knowledge but there would need to be a whole re-work, obviously.

When I talked to Pyro a couple of years ago he said that they had overdone the skins as it was.  It takes too much memory.

It's a load time issue (which I searched for and couldn't find).  Min-warps and stutters while each shin loads as you encounter it, I believe.

Which is what I was talking about in the second paragraph.

It is load time into video memory, not system memory.

Wouldn't it take less time to transfer a smaller file?
In any case, you have the option to preload skins, which you could do with smaller skin files.

Bit it's like Karnak said, you're not preloading into your video memory.  Every time a different skin pops up, it needs to be rendered by the video controller, taking a teeny bit of time, compounded by ? times.....

Yes it does, that's why Skuzzy suggests you download only the skins you want (as there's already too many to load them all) and then preload them. That's what it's there for.

Imagine going into a horde of Lancs or B17's with 30 different skins, my screen would freeze and my comp would crash. Basicly thye would be invinable becuase they would cause everyone else to disco.
