Hail Fellow Pilots!
I regret to inform you that our friend and long time fellow pilot Eagle passed away on Tuesday, April 28th. Eagle was the 327th Steel Talons Group Executive Officer. Eagle died from an infection that was contracted after a recent colon surgery. He was 78. In our non-virtual world Jim "Eagle" Delaney was a career Naval Aviator during 1950's, 60's and 70's. Jim was a rare pilot in his day as he was a Non-Commissioned Flight Officer, an uncommon commodity in modern times. Jim leaves behind several children and grandchildren and was preceded in death by his wife Joan who went to our Lord on August 9, 2007. They were married for 53 years. To view some of Eagle's photos go here: http://www.327th.com/pilot_profile/eagles-photoalbum.htm (http://www.327th.com/pilot_profile/eagles-photoalbum.htm)
In honor of Eagle's friendship and life the 327th Steel Talons will host a memorial missing man flight. Look for further detail in a future post that will announce the Date/Time/Location of this memorial. All are welcome to join.
Farewell Eagle! You will be missed!

When he flew fighters, Jim usually flew a 190, at least when I flew fighters with him. He was a hard core bomber pilot mostly. And a real friend.

I met with Eagle and his wife several years ago at the AH convention in Indy. Along with several other 327th members. The year before I had taken a trip on my bike and met him at his home near Chicago. In 2005 I met up with him and his wife again in Milwaukee while on a TDY for an Airshow. They treated me to a fine meal at a nice steakhouse and we enjoyed the day. Once again on one of my "world tours" I met up with him at his house and spent the night there. His sons came by and we all spent the evening yakking it up. It was shortly after that I heard from him that his wife had passed away. His wife, Joan, was a very nice person and always treated me as one of their friends.
A couple of months ago I sent him some pictures of Pensacola NAS and Corry Field (an outlying field of Pensacola NAS) to show him what it had become today. That was the last I had heard from him.
For some reason I was thinking of Jim the other day and asked if anyone had heard from him. I was afraid something like this had happened.
He was a great guy and a good friend. He will be missed.

High Flight
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long delirious, burning blue,
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew -
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untresspassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

Bleah... his "Attention to Detail" will be missed. Noone will be able to replace his ability to keep us informed about the 327th's standings'; in the FSO's...
It sucks to think I, we, never had a chance to say good-bye to him. I think he probably did this on purpose.
I have been missing his, as Gooss so eloquently put it, "...his long winded explanations of the obvious..." he used to drive me crazy with these! But only as an elder brother; I wish I could have had the chance to explain to him how much I actually enjoyed his rambling nature and company in the virtual skies...

When this life I'm in is done, And at the gates I stand, My hope is that I answer all His questions on command.
I doubt He'll ask me of my fame, Or all the things I knew, Instead, He'll ask of rainbows sent On rainy days I flew. The hours logged, the status reached, The ratings will not matter. He'll ask me if I saw the rays And how He made them scatter. Or what about the droplets clear, I spread across your screen? And did you see the twinkling eyes. Of student pilots keen? The way your heart jumped in your chest, That special solo day- Did you take time to thank the ones Who fell along the way? Remember how the runway lights Looked one night long ago When you were lost and found your way, And how-you still don't know? How fast, how far, how much, how high? He'll ask me not these things But did I take the time to watch The Moonbeams wash my wings? And did you see the patchwork fields And mountains I did mould; The mirrored lakes and velvet hills, Of these did I behold? The wind he flung along my wings, On final aproach I almost stalled. Did I know If it was His name, That I so fearfully called? And when the goals are reached at last, When all the flyings done, I'll answer Him with no regret- Indeed, I had some fun. So when these things are asked of me, And I can reach no higher,
My prayer this day - His hand extends To welcome home a Flyer.

Very sad to hear this. More and more you hear of simple to complex surgery ending a great persons life because of the rampant infections being spread in hospitals today. It's a very covered up epidemic honestly.
I hope he can convince God to send down more people like him, we are running out of Heros. :cry

The loss of Eagle has been a blow. He, as much as anyone, was the heart and soul of our squad. He always had great affection for all aspects of Aces High and Air Warrior before that.
I am deeply touched by the expression of sympathy from our AH friends. What a fine group of people.

Eagle was the guy who kept track of everything. Squaddie has a birthday? Eagle was there to announce it to the squad, always a funny little email with some sort of GIF in it, like alligators playing musical instruments and a shapely female dancing. Running some sort of scenario, or a weekly event? Eagle was there to keep track of every pilot and statistic. Nice charts in the emails. Who was "OO" for squad night? Eagle knew.
Always greeting any squaddie who logs on immediately. Always helping to organize anything going on.
Great stories, too, from decades of service. Always something interesting.
And always looking out for and thinking about the guys in the squad.
Yeah, Eagle was the anchor of the 327th, no doubt. I haven't flown much, lately. And even less with the squad. But I already miss him.

Eagle was one of the best. When he looked you in the eye and told you what he was thinking, there was no doubt that he meant what he was saying. I found it a rare quality, and I am glad to have known him, personally as well as a fellow 327th pilot and fellow Chief.

On the photo album page on the 327th site, there is a picture of a ceremony and the caption says, "over the side." Can anybody tell me what the significance of that is? Can anybody tell me what the ceremony is? Jim's niece would like to know.

Over the side is likely a retirement ceremony.

As long as I have been involved with Aces High, I have known Eagle who was a mentor in both the game and learning about PCs to me. I am sincerely grief sticken, to early this morn learn of his passing. I never had any idea he was a real aviator, US Navy no less, I am awe struck by that info. Eagle, the only name I ever knew him by, was very modest yet so deliberate. I will miss him greatly and can still hear that distinct sound of his voice over the vox. The game will never be the same without Eagle. I know the guys in the 327th and AH do not see me much of me these days, since having to start a new career that keeps me away from home most of the time, but AH has been one of the best experiences in my life of which Eagle was always considered by me to be a man of great integrity and conviction, even in a game. Please excuse me for rambling on while I absorb this terrible news. I guess I just figured Eagle would always be here and had no idea he was 78 years old. It is with great sadness over Eagle's passing I will head back out on the road and will think of Eagle whenever I see an eagle or hawk flying.
Goodbye my friend, Eagle, SALUTE, I will never forget you.
