Title: Cannon-Scooter (More Bizarre WW2 Tech)
Post by: oneway on May 22, 2009, 01:33:11 PM
Imagine how adequate you would feel riding this around?

The "big gun, little scooter" concept was intended to give paratroopers light artillery support, and hundreds of these things actually saw duty in Algeria and Indochina. And if you're thinking that firing this thing while driving would be suicidal, take heart: well-trained gun crews could apparently pull it off

Shouldn't be too bad actually, that looks more like a recoilless rifle than an actual cannon.

Why are you calling it Nazi tech?  The "Bazooka Vespa" (Troupes Aeról Portées Mle 56/Aerial Troop Carrier model of 1956) were used by the French in the '50s, with surprising success.

You're correct, it's the M-20 75mm recoilless rifle.

Just so we're clear, this thread has nothing to do with whether or not all Germans during WW2 were Nazis.  So I really don't know why you brought it up.

They were actually used in teams of two by French paratroopers.  One scooter carried the recoiless rifle and 4 rounds of ammunition while the second scooter carried the remaining recoiless rifle rounds (6 rounds).  Apparentely, some crews were very accurate with their fire while on the move.  Some teams were also proficient enough to be able to reload while on the move as well.

Looks to be a two person moped O' death type thingy,

Intrestingly however, the rails on the sides and rear seem to be for a rear facing passenger to hook his boot heals into.
Why else would the seat be so long, and that rail be present?

Next time, it pays to read the posts in the thread.

The "Bazooka Vespa" only carried one paratrooper, that's why they operated in teams of two.  One scooter carries the 1st paratrooper (gunner), M-20 75mm recoiless rifle, and four rounds and the 2nd scooter carried the 2nd paratrooper (loader) and the remaining recoiless rifle rounds.  The team carried a total of 10 rounds spread amongst the two team members.  The 2nd scooter did not mount the M-20 recoiless rifle.

I can definitely visualize a female 300lb lesbian biker riding this, with a flannel shirt and a wallet attached to her belt with a chain. Much like the one in front on this motorcycle.

how the hell could you fire this thing while moving?  I'd love to see footage of this in the testing phase to see how many troops they sent into orbit before finally getting the technique down pat.

Another thing I can't help but bring up while I'm sitting here laughing my bellybutton off over the fact that someone actually invented this thing an then actually USED it.  Remember when you were a kid on your bicycle and when you stopped too fast you would fall off the seat and bust your nuts on the bike's frame?  There had to be some poor sucker that went to fire this thing while still mounted and well.....

It worked quite well with the French forces in Algeria and Indonesia.  Since it was a recoiless rifle and not a cannon, firing it on the move was quite possible and as was mentioned before, some crews became very proficient on firing on the move and even loading the recoiless on the move.

Where did you find THAT?
Well, I guess the only thing worse than beating a dead horse is betting on one...

And a little fyi... that's no a gun, it's the same purpose as the b-25's nose gun... an emergency brake for those "oh $*@%" overshoots. :P

Better not mix up the button of the horn with the trigger!

In both cases, the guy in front of you will know you want to pass :D
