I think it would be a great idea if you could customize the number on the side of your plane. I got this idea from IL2, you would still use what ever skin you wanted but add an option in the hanger for what number/symbol you want to fly. And for German planes, and other countries that used this system, you could also select the color of your number.(ex. yellow 8, black chevron and bar, etc.). I think this would be a great addition for squads that fly the same skins.

				Historical accuracy is a b**ch.

Damn, that's the only thing I could think of that wouldn't make this work. I know when you send in a skin it has to be the specific number and such, but I was hoping this would slide since its just the number that's being changed, still the same historical skins we still have.

It's not really possible unless you have skins that are dedicated to the system.

Can you elaborate, I don't think I fully get it.

If you put numbers on the skin, it will just be numbers over the skin. Unless you take the actual tactical number out of the skin, separate the paint and weathering into separate images and then submit the skin, the results would be pretty bad.
(this is the only uncompressed semi-complete skin I had, mottling's terrible I just started on it :) Should have 117 kills on the rudder as well... )

If I over weathered my skins like most skinners do, it would be obvious that the 13 is completely unweathered, unlike the rest of the aircraft, as well.
Nose art is the same way, but it's small enough that it's not totally hideous, unlike tactical numbers.

That's what I thought you were talking about but wasn't 100% sure. Thought I had mentioned something about that in the first post but I guess not. For this idea the original number on the skin would be removed for it to work correctly, because like you said the results would be pretty bad.

Even then, you have to specify a font, size, and where the number needs to be. May not be a problem for a lot of aircraft, but for the 109 at least, a lot of other countries flew the aircraft in combat that didn't adhere to the German marking system.
Sometimes fonts don't exist either. I've seen several Italian aircraft where the numbers seem to be painted on by hand.

When I say markings based on squadron, I'm talking about actual WWII squadrons, not AH squadrons.  This is not about having custom markings.  Skins are not submitted for a person or squadron's private use.  Forget the word "custom", that's not what this is.  What it is is the ability of a player to add another skin option to a particular plane that EVERYBODY can use.  The purpose of submitting a skin is for everybody to use it.  If that is not why someone is submitting a skin, then they shouldn't submit one.  Period.
As I said, there is a criteria that must be met for us to admit a user submission.  Basically, it must be something that we would add to the game ourselves.  A skin may not be added for many reasons- quality, historical accuracy, redundancy, adherance to standards, usefulness, sensibility, and representation(i.e. a pink polka-dotted B-24 might be historically accurate as one did exist, but it is not representative of B-24s as it is a unique eccentric specimen nor is it useful and would not be a paint scheme that we would use).  We'll talk about all of that when we get there.
We can't allow everybody a custom skin.  Such a system could balloon into hundreds of thousands of skins that everybody has to download and store.  It's in no way comparable to the current squad art system.

Numbers would be cool to add , like the letter system on britsh planes . Besides we got nose art of our squads although I'm sure it would be a pain to make happen but who knows its a good idea .
