I installed W7 on my main gaming box last weekend. I was under the impression W7 was blazing fast untill I benchmarked the new graphics tool with it.
It scored 200 fps. The same box scored 250fps both at 1920x1200 using Windows XP. So while I still have plenty of room it did give a sizeable performance hit.
-
I wouldn't sweat RC benchmarks. It will give you a general idea but official drivers may make a significant performance improvement.

W7 is nothing but a glorified Vista service pack. It uses same driver model so the latest drivers are pretty much it already.
I don't expect to have 30% speed gains by any driver update.

Like Ripley said, Windows 7 is just an update to Vista, but it is what Vista should have been the first time it was released. It will be slower than XP, just as Vista is. It cannot help but be a bit slower. Microsoft keeps adding new services to it.
By the time it gets released, it could be more bloated than Vista, but it will still be better than Vista due to all the bug fixes. Think of it as Vista w/SP3. Although there are rumblings a SP3 will be released for Vista, so maybe Vista w/SP4.
Microsoft got a big black eye over Vista and cannot move fast enough to shed that name from its parts bin. I hope they do the right thing and offer a limited time free upgrade for those who got stuck with Vista, just to expedite Vista's removal from the marketplace.

7 Ultimate is available for download and unlimited use for 1 year currently.
That's not too shabby if you ask me.
I'm running the 64 bit version and coming up with some great benchmarks except for my hd's in raid 0 that are showing a seek time of 15ms. That will cause game stutters but will the drives load data fast as the throughput is fast.
I'm thinking (if I recall properly) that seek time is increased while overall read/write times are decreased with raid 0. Parity size can adjust that possibly but my intel raid on this new mobo didn't allow me to change it to a lower # vs my asus board on my amd chipset that allowed me to go from 16 - 256 I believe...I'm currently at 128.

Pff....I only get like 30 FPS haha.

When we say faster in regards to OS's is that the time it takes to complete a certain task? For instance accessing a file. Would this have any effect once connected to the internet or will that be slower as well? What affect will that have on game play over the internet?

All I know is I just upgraded my system (more like built a new one).
E7300 C2D (2.8GHZ), 4GB DDR3, GeForce9800GTX+ 512MB DDR3, all setting maxed (16XAA, all video options set for eye-candy), and I have a dual-boot setup with WinXPPro 32bit on one hard drive, and 7 Ultimate (RC) 64bit on another. 1680X1050 @ 1024 Textures (Hi-Res PACK) and all graphics settings turned up full from within AH.
XP is streamlined, 7 is not.
I get a solid 59FPS no matter what on either OS (VSYNC ON), however with Win7 even though NET STATUS looks solid as a rock, I get a lot of lag. Moving airfields takes several seconds. Lots of rubber bullets (In a panzer shooting a Wirbel.. first hit turreted it but the next 10, most of which were at point-blank range.. did nothing then someone else killed it with one hit and I got an assist).. and everything in general just feels 'sloppy' and 'heavy'. On XP, however, everything works instantly in AH and feels light and nimble.
Now I haven't spent any time disabling services or processes in Win7 so alot of this may have to be with the auto updater or firewall or what not... but there's definitely some network goofiness going on there... And of course, it's still in BETA stage as well.

Works identically as the way it does in XP for me, except that I can't take screenshots using PrtScrn. W7 doesn't seem to like that for some reason. Works in the skin view and film viewer (including when maximized), but not in Aces High or any other game I've tried. I just get a window with nothing in it for the SS.
-
EDIT: I meant E7400, not E7300.
Anyways, I just realized that that thing that slows down your processor automatically (to save on energy) was turned on in BIOS.. I dasabled it.. maybe this had something to do with W7's laggy behavior.... I'll keep you posted

I'll stay with Windows proven best product so far. XP Pro.
It would be imho to microsofts best interests to introduce a gaming only platform OS.
I think it may sell very well. Maybe include explorer and outlook express.
Without services that quite frankly aren't needed or wanted.
(I can dream can't I) ;)

They will not do that because they want you to buy an XBox.

Even those sales are getting beat out by PS3.....
-
Because PS3 is a good quality product and doesn't redring out after the 3rd time you use it.
-
Uh, dunno where you get your sales figures from, but the PS3 is the worst selling console in the U.S. The Wii is stomping on all of them with the XBox following. The PS3 does well in Japan, possibly Europe, but total sales have been abysmal as compared to the XBox.

Well you figure xbox 360 was released a whole year earlier than the PS3. But in comparison, the PS3, while not having sold more copies to date, has sold copies faster in the amount of time.

Skuzzy..............I'm almost 60 years old. Buy an XBox??? Not me :P

That chart at the top of that article was created by the person who wrote the article and is not base in reality. Later in the article, he finally mentions the PS3 has been doing badly, and sources Sony as the source of that information.
The projections are not found in reality either. They are based on the hope that it will come true, by Sony. The PS3 was outsold by the PS2 during the last Christmas season. It was the worst selling console, and as a percentage of sales, it did worse than any console in the history of the Christmas season.
I am not a console fan and I actually owned a PS3, at one time. I got rid of it. The controllers for consoles are just hideous to use, for me. We are considering a Wii though. Seems there is a better range of software for it.
-
Well I'm not big on consoles at all, but my wife bought a wii. Mostly to help with getting in better shape.
The Wii Fit package is actually pretty fun, balance games especially can blur the line between fun and workout.
Running a salom course, ski jumping, esp on advanced will push you to your limits.
I would highly recommend getting at least 2 remotes. The nunchucks are gimicky, and are really not that useful for most things I've tried except the boxing.
For all things gaming I'd much rather have a PC where I can change key bindings, settings etc.
But I can see where the Wii does have a place.
-
I'm tempted to try this Beta.
E8400 (not OC'd)
4GB PC-8500 Ram
8800GTS KO
What is needed, a Windows Live account or something of the like?
-
I have a PS3, and for me its a glorified Blu-Ray, DVD, and DivX player. I can't remember the last time I played a game on it, and in fact I regret buying the few that I have (other than Guitar Hero, which I'd keep, even if I haven't played it in a long long time). I do think the PS3 is worth it just as a Blu-Ray player though. I in no way regret buying the system (as opposed to the games).
If you're a fairly serious console gamer, the 360 is the way to go. I'm not but I know a lot of people who are. Everyone I know that has a Wii says that it gets old real fast (except for GH as previously stated).
As for Windows 7... like Vista I'm in wait-and-see mode. Having skipped Vista entirely I'm probably more likely to give Windows 7 a chance. But not if my ability to run my favorite apps is gone or diminished.
-
I agree the PS3 is a glorified BluRay player. But a quick note. If your television is 720p only, a good line doubling DVD player will smoke the PS3 in image quality.
I too am in "wait-n-see" mode. I almost always wait a year before trying a new Microsoft OS. Although WIndows 7 is not new (based off of Vista), it is what Vista should have been to begin with. So my 1 year wait will start after it ships.
Never been much for the bleeding-edge. There is a reason it is called that.

:lol :lol :lol Never put it in that perspective before. Wonder if that came about through munitions testing.

We have a Wii and Wii Fit. I love the thing. I started doing 30 minutes of the Rythm boxing every morning, lost about 25 pounds in roughly three months. The kids love it too.

I just ordered a Dell Studio 16 with Windows Vista Prem 64 bit on it...I read somewheres that Microshaft will be letting people upgrade if they bought their PC 2 months before the W7 release...I wonder if I'll get a deal like that, even though it'll be 3-4 months before the release.

Most Manufacturers were giving coupons during the Holiday season the Fall of '06 when Vista came out. Since Retail Vista was delayed to Jan. 30 2007, you could buy a PC say October 2006 and you'd get a coupon for a free Vista upgrade....I mean downgrade.

Hmm...so if things are looking like they were...I might be able to barely squeak it out. I'll be getting W7 regardless, but why not try and get it free.

If Microsoft has a brain anywhere in that company, they will offer all Vista users a free upgrade to Windows 7, just to get Vista off the market.

Business and ultimate edition users will get a free upgrade but home version users won't get it if current info is true.

No they wont. It depends on when you buy Vista. At the moment you have to buy SA (software assurance) to get win7 upgrade.

Well that's true I meant people who bought Vista in the timeperiod valid for the upgrade. I think it may vary on different continents also.
Computerworld - A leaked memo from Best Buy claims that the retail chain will pre-sell Windows 7 upgrades for as little as $49.99 starting June 26, a technology enthusiast site reported today.
On Friday morning, Engadget posted an image of what it said was an internal Best Buy memo that outlined the company's plans for Windows 7, which Microsoft has announced will go on sale starting on Oct. 22.
The memo, which dubbed Windows 7 as more than just a "Vista that works" operating system, said that Best Buy would kick off pre-sales of Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Professional for $49.99 and $99.99, respectively, beginning June 26. The promotional prices will be good through July 11, the memo added.
Those prices are considerably lower than prices for similar Vista upgrades. An upgrade edition of Vista Home Premium, for example, lists for $129.95, and sells at online outlets such as Amazon.com for about $95. Vista Business, the edition closest to Windows 7 Professional, lists for $199.95 and sells on Amazon.com for $188.
Microsoft has been touting Windows 7 Home Premium as the default version for consumers, and Professional as the de facto choice for businesses that don't pay Microsoft for a Software Assurance licensing plan.
The Best Buy memo also appeared to confirm that Microsoft, computer makers and retailers will launch the Windows 7 Upgrade Option program in three weeks.
"Best Buy will begin a Technology Guarantee June 26, which guarantees customers a free Windows 7 operating system with PC purchase between June 26 and the Windows 7 launch day," the memo said. "Computers running Vista Home Premium, Business or Ultimate qualify for the upgrade as of June 26. This includes nearly all of our computers in the assortment, except for a couple of them."
The memo's dates and upgrade paths match what TechARP, a site that has repeatedly nailed Microsoft plans before they go public, had revealed as early as January 2009. On Tuesday, Microsoft announced that it would provide "special deals" on Windows 7 upgrades to buyers of Vista PCs before the new operating system launches, but declined to divulge any details, such as the launch date.
Today, the company kept mum. "We're continuing to work with our retail and OEM partners to provide Windows 7 Upgrade Option programs and other offers to consumers interested in experiencing Windows 7," a spokeswoman said in an e-mail. "We're excited to share additional details regarding these programs soon, but do not have additional details to announce at this time."
According to Best Buy, customers can place orders for Windows 7 on its Web site starting June 26, but copies won't ship until October.
