Title: Single greatest piece of advice
Post by: jerkins on June 04, 2009, 11:22:35 PM
If you could only give one tip to a new pilot what would it be.  If everyone gives one tip, this thread will be full of great tips.

Here is mine.

Think in three dimensions, Using the vertical is one of the best ways to save energy and win the fight.  Flat turns bleed energy fast and can lead to putting yourself at a disadvantage.

Have the patience to climb to altitude.  Rushing to the fight gets you into the fight faster, but it alo gets you out of the fight faster too...

I would tell them to adjust their views as it's vital to SA......

Run!

Seriously if your closure rate on a con's six is too high risking an overshoot make your firing pass then roll over the top of him (barrel roll) turning your speed into vertical seperation then drop back behind him in a better position.

If you think you have a shot on an enemy (even if it was a 1v1), check behind you. Historically, there was a possibility of having a bandit there, in the MA someone will be there, guaranteed.

If you are in anything but a Spit or a 51 multiply that by 3, since most are tired of shooting down the same planes. If you are in a P38, assume that every bandit within 5.9k will be diving on you.

Learn how to make vertical or horizontal separation before the merge to give you room for a lead turn. Many fights can be won in a single turn if you catch the other guy not worrying about denying you a lead turn.

SA, and gunnery. Once you master those two thing, it's hard to get shot down. I think gunnery is 70% of the fight. The rest of the 30% is SA and ACM =)

Duel in the da.  Learn what works by getting killed again and again by doing things that don't work. Film fights and watch film from your nmes perspective when he baffles you with a maneuver.  Ask questions.

Learn the barrel roll defense. From that one maneuver, many adaptations are possible.

You learn by losing, don't be afraid to do it.  Push yourself, if the situation your in feels comfortable and familiar you're probably not learning anything.  Take the challenge, if you lose learn why you lost and you'll be a better cartoon fighter pilot.  With few exceptions the guy who just whooped you in a 1v1 is probably more than willing take a few minute to explain how he did if you ask politely.

Knew I was forgetting something. Constantly duel. No better way to learn than constant nights of nonstop duels with experienced pilots.

Only after you spend some time with a trainer, the DA is not the place to learn and you will most certainly pick up some bad habits in there.....because I find nothing but a HO fest in the DA. But it is a good place to practice Defense...........

When diving on an easy target, start shooting from 1.4k (2.5k if you have .50s) and wobble your rudder to cover as much area as possible. After you miss make sure to pull up as predictably as possible infront of their nose, as this is the last thing they will expect.
Do not at any moment use the throttle to manage your attack speed.

Make plans. In every situation imaginable. Before you enter a fight. In the fight. When getting bounced. When looking for an exit. Then use the right ACM to achive your plan. Keep the plans simple. Build them step for step, not a big masterplan right from the start. This helps you on focusing on what matters and make the right decisions at the right time.

Think in three dimensions, Using the vertical ...

That is what I think is the key ... at least it was for me.

Once I realized that there was a 3rd dimension that I could use in a fight and started using it, rather than fighting on the horizontal, all sorts of good things started to happen for me.

It was watching films of Leviathn and WildThng that brought about the Epiphany for me.

Be gentle and coordinated on controls: wailing stall horn = bleeding speed and you don't want that in a dogfight where small differences in energy states may represent a difference between win or lose.
