Title: Can some one help me?
Post by: Spyder on June 12, 2009, 06:44:36 PM
Hi. How can I make my tank harder to kill? I watch all the good tankers and they have this. I have asked around and people have said that if I make my connection slower it will do the trick, is this true?

Seriously? Dude, there is NO WAY to make your tanks have more armour if thats what your asking...

Who have you been asking that told you that?

Not true.  All players' tanks and planes are the same. You need to hit vulnerable spots, use cover, and know how to present the least vulnerable parts of your ground vehicle and plane to the enemy.  e.g. show a side profile rather than a full top-down target area to other planes, or deny flat angles against your armor to other tanks or ground attack planes.  Ideally this last one would be 45 degrees, but front usually being weaker than side armor, the optimal angle is some front-facing bias.

Drop bombs on the other tanks, all tankers deeply respect someone who can bomb them accurately, especially if you do it from Lancasters.

Oh. The reason I ask is because of those stories that I always hear. For example the one I heard today "400 yards away from a sherman in my panzer, I shoot him in the side, and he turns his turret and hits my front and I die".

Some tanks do have better armor than others.  The Sherman's is heavier than a Panzer's.  Also, rounds will just bounce off if you don't hit in the right places.  Sounds like the Panzer didn't know how to kill the Sherman.

Hearsay is hearsay.  What an anecdote doesn't say is that there's both lethal and non-lethal spots to hit on both a GV's flank and front.  You can puncture empty space or hit the pilot, or engine, etc.

One thing you'll learn Spyder is this game is full of story tellers. Most of the time the actual even gets distorted the way the story teller wants it  :D

best thing to do, is to learn where the weak spots on your chosen tank are, and do not expose them to the enemy.

Spyder - when you go into zoom mode for your gun view, use the up arrow key to zoom in some, then use the bracket  [   ]  keys to zoom in MUCH further.

I went from 1 kill if I was lucky before I found that out and was looking through straws it seemed, to some really really nice sortes. :)

Just a little , probably not so, hidden secret that is crucial to tanking.

Gv'ing is like everything else in this game, you are not going to learn it over night. It's not like some of these guys that are good (no name's , to many to mention) at it became good in a week or two. It takes time and a lot of getting killed to get good at it, it's not going to just come to you , your going to have to work at it. There are no secrets or game to it, spend the time doing it and take your butt kicking's as the come and learn from every engagement, take something out of every fight good or bad.

Much of this is due to the less-than-perfect GV modeling and game-engine.  Sometimes, at very close range, your round appears to go through the tank, not hit it and either get a kill or ricochet like you'd expect.  It's a software problem and happens to everyone.  It's been talked about by tankers since AHII arrived, and probably before.   :D

If you are facing directly towards a tank they will have an easier time killing you, turn your tank diagonal to where they will be shooting at you.  Every new angle you add to the round hitting you makes the damage model multiply and thus makes you harder to kill.  The whole damage model is very complex but long story short the more you can steer away from 90degree angles the better, 45 degrees is ideal.

If you really want to get good go practice shooting the gv drones offline to find the spots where each tank is weakest.

This will also help your accuracy.
