Couple of months ago I took the plunge and purchased a new iPhone. Well I didn't need it but hey it was bright and shiny :x
Since then though wow!
These are the things I do:
Keep my grocery list on it (Free download)
Use the GPS Function:
Google by voice commands: (Free download)
Read and answer my e-mail.
Calculate financial equations: Not so free.
Watch youtube videos,
Listen to music,
And actually make/receive phone calls.
Pretty amazing stuff.

There's a guy on eBay that makes a Star Trek Bluetooth Communicator.. I paid around $250.00 for it back in 2007.. Works just like how it was intended in the show/movies..

There is a video out there on the interwebs that stars a nokia. I'm pretty sure me posting it here would be a violation of some rule or another, but google is your friend.

Yea but can you submerge it in water or drop it off a ladder?
LOL your phone would not survive me
And mine has a built in compass (oohhhh)LMAO

I just picked up theG'zOne Boulder
As water resistant mobile phone, G'zOne BoulderTM (C711) had been designed forMIL-STD-810F, Method 512.4, Procedure I; it can be safely used in the rain. Its reliable water resistant construction even allows use in swimming pools or on board boats.
What is MIL-STD-810F, Method 512.4, Procedure I ?
MIL-STD-810F, Method 512.4, Procedure I is immersion test method certifies that a device will remain operable even after being immersed for up to 30 minutes to a depth of one meter in standing fresh water at normal temperature.

Nice phone. Didnt get all the doodads like web or GPS. Just dont need em.
What I did need was a tough phone that could take ...well ME.
Meets military specs for water. Dust and shock.
CNets review claimed poor call quality. with alot of static.
I found this claim to be largely unfounded unless you have the sound up full blast. But if you have it that loud you have a hearing problem to begin with. LOL
Actually at normal volume it sounds great on both ends.

I'm glad to have an iPhone simply so that I don't have to carry a bunch of junk around with me to be entertained. I can leave the GameBoy, PSP, MP3 player, ect sitting on the table until I sell them off...the phone works to replace all of them.
Plus, it's very handy for distraction for the bubbly girls that ask me to work on their computers. They toy with the free apps instead of bugging me with "What's that do?" and "How's this work?"
-
I honestly thought that iPhones were probably the gheyest phones on the market. With all of the hype and trendy bananas who own them..... I didn't want to know about them.
Then I lost my rag with my old phone (LG Ku 990). I couldn't stand it any longer, it was just rubbish. The missus and I decided to bite the bullet and go and see what else was out there.
My old iPod, a veteran of 5 years service, was due to be retired so I thought I'd take a look at the iPhone.
Long story short, It's a quiet Sunday at work and I'm typing this message on my 16gig iPhone.
16gig is a bit small for my music library, so I need to chop and change what I put on here, but other than that, this phone is nothing short of impressive.
Apple are annoying and I'll be pissed if I have to send it away to them to get something fixed, but so far it has been the best phone I've owned, hands down, since my Nokia 8310 that I got in 2003 and I loved that thing.

QFT. I went the refurbished route because I didn't want to spend too much money. Turned out the microphone was totally inoperable, AT&T won't touch them, and Apple will only take mail-in service on the newly purchased ones. Also turns out the nearest Apple Store is 62.8 miles away. Oh party. So, I go through all their online support systems, check that I have every detail and piece they could ever need, and set out. I get there and the obviously drugged little perky receiving girls with their headsets and modified iPod Touch PDAs pretty much tell me I'm an idiot for not being an Apple junky and knowing that I needed an appointment. So, I'm told to go home and come back three days later.
Now, once I actually made it to the back where the "Genius Bar" is (how schmaultzy is that?), I was treated rather properly since they were fellow geeks and took my word for it after seeing my physics joke tshirt and the stick of RAM I wear as a necklace. :D They promptly replaced it with a brand new one and I was set.
I can tell you one thing, though. When this battery's gone, I'm not paying the $150-$200 they apparently ask for an out of warranty phone (and guess how long the batteries are designed to last?). I'd much rather open it up and do it myself.

I've heard that about Apple batteries too.... but like I said in my post above... I had my monster brick iPod for over 5 years and I beat the living piss out of it.
It's dented, scratched and rattles when you shake it (no joke, it's like a baby's rattle toy). It still works and I still get a full work-day of uninterrupted play out of it.
It won't skip songs in shuffle mode without jamming and needing to be reset, but if you press play and leave it alone, it's fine.
8 hours continuous out of a hard-drive based piece of tech that is 5 years old and badly abused?
Sounds bloody great to me.
Hopefully the iPhone is as resilient as my old ipod.

Never get a phone with a big screen like this, the screen will crack easy. Note to self: Next upgrade is going to be a flip phone with a Small front screen

My phone is encased in rubber with corner shock barriers and the screen is covered with plastic film. Hopefully that will prevent some damage.

I watch You Tube videos
surf using Opera Mini
read/answer emails
have about 80 of some of my favorite mp3's on mine
don't use the GPS or Map function
use the calender for minuscule reminders
take good pictures for a camera phone
I have an 8350i Blackberry Curve with a 1GB card. I'll be getting the 8GB card very soon.
-
I've dropped my iPhone countless times, buried it in Quikrete (on accident) and it still works fine with no scratches (screen film protector thingy and a leather case thingy)

Forgot, have about the camera, have 100 pictures on my phone and I use the calendar/to do list as well. Now the one thing I cannot do is up the storage. It's 8 GB and that is it. Would have to spend money for a new phone to get it up to 16.

I make calls. If I know who is calling, I answer it. Anything beyond that I consider an added burden and complexity I do not need in my life.

Different views for me. I view it has fun, entertaining, and convenience. Though I don't play games on it. I had a professor with your exact same views and his field was (Drum Roll) technology.

The wife and I have dual LG side flip phones. We use it for a phone and occasional texting. I wanted the qwerty keyboard so I could text the Daughter in Law without having to punch a button 3 times for a letter to pop up. We have other bells and whistles on them as well. The only other thing I have used has been the calendar, the alarm clock and the camera. It's primarily a phone to me and I'm happy without the majority of toys that other phones have at higher cost.
-
I have a G1 with google's Android OS. It can do all of those things and IMO a lot more dev friendly.
Doesn't look as "pretty" but that's just the phone's skin, not the OS.
-
A great way to not crack the screen of a phone is to always place it in your pocket facing your leg (or butt, if that's where you stash it). With bar phones like the iPhone, get a silicone casing. Unless something pierces your leg (much more to worry about) or really thwacks it, it won't incur any damage.

I got this one when I bought my iPhone :
It's a decent case, but the case snapped where the volume controls are when I put it in my pocket and it caught the edge of it.
Gonna eventually buy this one, along with more of the little screen protectors :

Well I better start a list for my phone as it is very long :lol
I got the AT&T Tilt even they dont sell it anymore I still believe its the best phone ever made still.

It is a Windows Mobile phone so it does a lot. Every program you could imagine is free on Windows Mobile phones.
I have:
Microsoft Office Mobile on my phone to type up reports, graphs, powerpoint presentations. Im a college kid and I dont always have a laptop on me.
I have gps program on it that gives me full features even with turn by turn speech for free as it has built in gps.
I can connect my phone to my laptop through a usb cable and connect my laptop to the internet if no wireless is available.
The obvious youtube.
Email.
Text messaging.
Free music ID program.
Check weather.
Microsoft released mobile bing to check movie times, gas prices, etc in the area and can double as a gps but I have a better program.
It has full internet access with internet explorer but I may try mobile firefox soon.
I keep things to do on a calender on it.
It has windows media player so it has music as well.
There are countless downloads that I can also get on just one website alone that makes thousands of programs for windows mobile phones. The only thing I wish I could find is a program where I can make speech to text for text messaging without having to use the keyboard or touch screen to text.

Smoke signals
c'mon man. I bet with all the "texting" he has to either monitor or do on the boards. The very last thing he wants to do anywhere else is..text. LOL
I only on very very very rare occasions text.
In the time it takes me to text someone. I could have just called them direct and said it verbally several times over.
I'll only text someone if I know they arent able to use their phone due for example my son is in class. and then only if I need to get him a message right away.
I find very few things are that important
-
SKuzzy do you text at all?
No, as a matter of fact we chose our carrier based on the fact they could disable 'texting' altogether. I do not see the point in 'texting'. If I need to get a hold of someone I call them.
-

Me neither, I see it as passing notes under the desk in school. My texting is disabled as well.
BTW, while driving this morning I thought hey if people are texting why not make it really simple and use more code and then have a program that translates that back to text. That way all you have to do is press one button and then send.
Addendum: No new ideas, They already have that. No millions for me.

BlackBerry Messenger the fool out of people that actually have it (much better than regular texting)
Use my handy Braves.com shortcut to check up on my favorite team
Use Verizon's cool new app that lets me know the name of a song and artist after listening for 10 seconds
Listen to music at the gym, cutting grass, getting ready for a ball game, etc.
Check work and personal e-mail that dings every 10 minutes or so
Watch a few YouTube vids
Facebook a lot
Make a few phone calls every now and then
Check the weather
Cuss and find somewhere to plug it up since the battery is dying again

Couldnt agree more! I have 1 cell phone, thats all it does, make calls, and I could count on 1 hand the number of times I've used it.It was gotten purely for emergency calls and thats it. Heck I rarely answer my home phone and if I had my way I wouldnt even have 1 of those.
:salute

Those that do not text, prefer real-time interaction with people, as it is more efficient and personable.
-
I don't like phone calls, but for anything more than banter I'd rather call the person. Issue is, I tend to like girls (:D) and ALL of them are duct-taped, welded, and glued to the texting bandwagon. My current girlfriend actually starts to get anxious the longer she's on the phone. (<--Wishing for the old rolleyes smilie)

i bought a $50 pay and go phone a month ago. it works dandy as an alarm clock, and it works nicely to make phone calls...don't need it for anything else, barely need it as is.
