Hi guys, I am sure some of you guys have shot me down at least once. Probably most of you in fact.
Anyways, I haven't WW2 simmed since AW "back in the day" so I am pretty rusty but I thought I would give you guys some opinions from a new guy on how it feels in AH. I love the game. The game doesn't love me though, but hopefully I will get better.
Some things I have noticed or would like to comment on. Any feedback or insights are appreciated.
1) The 38 is hard to to learn and fly well. I have read the forums for a bit and this seems to be a common theme so its not me. I flew it a bit in AW and it seemed to be an easier mistress than the harsh one thats here.
2) I draw hordes to my plane. It could be cuz I am not very good yet or people like the fat behind the 38 presents.
3) It took me almost a whole day to get my first "legit" kill.
4) I have a 1 to 1 kills to assist ratio. Not sure if its becaue my shooting sucks or because I don't hang with targets long enough. It would be nice to get some sort of recognition for that besides a one line stat.
5) Very few jerks in game so far.
6) Too many spit + Poney drivers
7) They need a "nub" arena where all the new pilots can fly, and only them can be in it until they "graduate". Not a training arena or anything, but a full fledged arena that you can only be in when you have less than lets say 200 hours of flight time (or some other sort of qualification that makes sense). While I am pretty persistant and I will get better, I think some may be scared off by the fact there are so many talented and experienced players.
7) Where is the b-29 in game?
8.) I was kidding about 7
I just got out of my two week sub a couple of days and I will be sticking around so you can't have my stuff. So far I am really impressed by the game and WW2 sims have come a long way from the AW AOL days.

well if you were the mav in MW yesterday in the 51 you flew that thing very well if you ask me :salute oh welcome to your new addiction

I doubt it will help anyone. A arena with only completely unexperienced players means no one to learn from, reinforcing wrong habits. It would be just delaying the "OMG I suck" experience one will get once entering the "regular" MA's. Also it would be a place where misinformation about game (gameplay mechanics, tactics, performance) would almost freely float around due to almost nobody having a clue
I remember... with a few notable exceptions, most H2H regulars got some serious whipping when they first went to the MA after H2H was taken down, no matter how long they played in H2H before.
BTW... the "talented and experienced players" are actually the minority in MA's ;)

Welcome back to the genre :aok
Since you're not new to these kind of games, it should mostly be a matter of getting reacquainted. Grab a friend and head into the Training Arena or Dueling Arena for a few hours a week, and it should start to come back to you.
-
Oh I forgot.. the quickest way to get more success is to either hook up with a trainer, or look for a mentor. You are lucky if you are flying the 38, because there are alot dedicated 38 drivers out there that are not only very capable fighters but also very willing to help any eager new "light bomber" pilot :)
I'm convinced with your previous experience and some tutoring, your kills/assist ratio will improve very quickly :aok

Just avoid landing lessons from Guppy35,....unless you are fond of bent, ripped, mangled, mauled, mashed, crunched, warped, stressed, distressed, fractured, bullet riddled and/or missing pieces. :)
And welcome to the game!

Hiya Mav, I remember you from AW. The learning curve is a little steep but since you've already have experience in flight sims, the curve is a little easier. The P-38 in AH is a great plane if flown properly and in the hands of an experienced driver, one of the most deadliest planes in the game.
If the P-38 is going to be your main ride in AH, then you should hook up with us SAPP guys as we're an evil organization of P-38 enthusiasts bent on world domination. There are also a few P-38 squadrons like the 479th "Riddle's Raiders" (old time AW squadron), the 80th (famous for landing with less plane parts then they took off with) and the newly formed 82nd squadron. If you need any tips, just ask any of the P-38 flyers in the 479th or any of the 80th or 82nd guys and for a price (usually 2 ewes and a 12 pack of beer) we'll be more than happy to share our vast and invaluable knowledge of the P-38.

Welcome to AH Mav!
When S.A.P.P. guys are on we tune to channel 138. Your welcome to tune in anytime and fly with us.
Early next month there will be a P38 Clinic held in the Training Arena. Keep a lookout for the dates.

All true but you forgot lacerated, battered, beaten, pummeled, ravaged, mutilated, maimed.... :)
On the other hand following him around and shooting at the people who are doing the mauling is a great way to improve the 'ol K/D ratio. And despite all the horrific things 'ol Guppy/Corkyjr does to his poor poor plane they keep giving him new ones. :)

I thought that taking lessons from any S.A.P.P. pilot was a bad idea... Then again, if it's not been ripped to shreds, missing a wing, landing gear, with a PW, no elevators, while on fire then where's the fun in the sortie?
Good to see you Mav, remember, if you want some help with anything, there's always plenty of people who know what they're doing willing to help out.
-
Welcome to Aces High! :)
Soulyss, Shuffler, Ack-Ack are just a few of some excellent P-38 sticks in the game. Look them up.

LOL it could be that Mav is to blame for for my 'flying' as his was the first squad I was ever in, back in Airwarrior :)

the P38s are some of the easiest planes to learn in the game.....right up there with spitfires imo.
-

You must have the touch for them. I can never get them to feel "right" and put in a decent effort a few years ago flying with the 475th. Something about 2 tails just doesn't work for me :)
-
just my opinion: There are so many good points to them. Excellent top end Speed and burst speed matched with agile maneverability, especially at lower speeds and during vertical engagements. As a gun platform, P38s are without peer. Two engines are vastly better than one. No engine torque. Visibility is excellent (p38G armored glass notwithstanding).....
Only downsides for me are quick onset of compression and PWs.....
Great rides.

I seem to remember a Mav from AW as well. The more I think about it the more the name seems to ring a bell. I've only been here for about 7 months or so myself, so I am not far removed from the helplessness you're feeling now. I still need to improve a large amount. Welcome back and I hope to see you up man!

7) Where is the b-29 in game?
Its not in the game because it would destroy the universe.

I'm sure with a little practice, you too can land like Guppy. In fact, as the Grand Exhalted Leader, it is expected that your landings not only rivals those of Guppy's but surpass them as well to show us peons how a true master does it.

I can say that in my opinion DERILIUM is the foremost 38 pilot. With many bullet holes in my canopy to prove it, he would be the one to stick with and learn. I have noticed that being able to isolate your (engine 1) and (engine 2) on your stick makes a huge difference(helps with any of the duel engine planes) in turning it on a dime. Welcome back........<<<!S!>>>

Yep, I refused to rejoin the 80th Headhunters and Stogey took me into the DA. He beat me soundly twice in a row within seconds each time and I'm back in the 80th.

If you'd like, I can arrange some time with you in the Training Arena, let me know.

Welcome back mav,
My opinion is bias, but the 38 drivers community is the best in the game!

Good to see you mav i remember you from AW days . I restarted flying after 8 year lay off , in june of last year . welcome aboard

Mav, been a longgggggggg time I was bomber guy 9900 in AW..still bomber guy just a new number 999000
<S> and welcome back Sir!

Well not much of a 38 guy, but being able to throttle your left engine down and having the right at full does not help the turning of the 38....? Even in a vertical maneuver......? Inquiring minds want to know.........
-
since so many 38 pile-its are in checking this thread..........anyone seen ROCKY?
i used to fly with him in AW3..the one right after aohell i think it was in the RR arenas.

There's been a Rocky flying Knights for years... Not sure if it's the same guy.

Minimal for hammerhead.
Helps getting out of stall spin.
That is about all.... in a fight it is something else to keep your head in the plane instead of oiutside where it should be.
-
ROCKY was up the other night Cap. He's been around for a long time in AH

It lets you make really nice Hammerheads and Knife Overs, helpful in recovering from certain spin situations and increases the immersion factor. Is it going to let you turn tighter than the other guy? Nope.

I remember a Mav from the ole Cz squad Warthogs in Air Warrior.
-
Mav, do you fly as Mav or Maverick? There was a Maverick in last Koth and he was a decent opponent, beat me senseless in a p51 1 on 1 fight.
-
Heya Mav.
I just started AH between 3 and 4 weeks ago after not playing a sim since AW, and I'm finding that throwing the 38 around in AH is lot tougher to do. Some of these guys can really move the bird when slow like it's nobody's business.
There's definitely a learning curve, and lack of playing for 10 years will be apparent, but after a few weeks, you should be pretty comfortable in it.
Welcome back :)

1) The 38 is....
I am far from an even mediocre 38 driver in AH, but in AW, it was my main ride.
From a coading perspective (yes, we misspell it on purpose), I have no idea why, but it doesnt move anywhere near like it did in AW.
For example, the "over the top" capability is greatly reduced. Flaps out in AW meant you could play with Zeke's. Not so here - although more historically accurate by all accounts.
When I think back to my first couple weeks here, which were primarily spent complaining to my old AW squadies about how "inaccurate" the 38 was, I came away with a strange epiphany that, I think, served me well in terms of bridging the understanding gap between how AW works and how AH works.
Weight.
In AW, I dont know about you, or maybe Ive just forgotten, but I couldn't feel the weight of an aircraft. The 190A8 simply didnt turn well. The Spit9 did. The 190 never felt "heavier" to me.
In AH, Dale & Co. have really done a truly outstanding job creating a "feel" for weight.
With the AW 38, you'd merge, pull over the top, roll upright, pull over the top again and come down on an opponent as quickly as you could make the angle changes, burning E to gain angles, knowing that just about every other AC in the set couldnt follow.
In AH, that big, heavy, twin-engine, light-bomber (38, we're talking about) will zoom climb forever and, when you need to hang on the props, there its the best there is.
It may sound silly, but Im just throwing it out there since it helped me. Once I learned to consider the weight of various aircraft, that made a massive difference in how I attempted to engage other in AH.
Best of luck and, as always, you will find most players more than willing to help - not to mention our official training staff, which is outstanding.

Ah the dreaded "+" ;)

Thanks for the welcome. :)
I remember you madda; I actually remember a lot of the people still playing. It's been 10 years, but it feels like an extended weekend away, albeit one that took away all of my ability! :)
I've seen lots of Muskies up, and CorkyJr (+Tiff) was telling me about people that are still here.
It's a lot of fun to be back, and really cool that a lot of the same community has stuck around!

i went lookin around in the cockpit......i didn't see one in mine.......... :cry :cry

could ya do me a favor?
i never really go to the lw arenas unless it's with you guys on a SAPP night.......if ya see him up, tell him i said hi....and maybe come to mw for a fight or five?
i remember fighting him in AW in 38's. they were probably the absolute most fun fights i had back then. i was FGHT6 in there.............
thanks!!
-
Wow. There are a TON of people I recognize on this thread. Thanks for the welcome. The one great thing that AW had was a community. I guess all we had was each other and the ewes.
Ogden aces, muskies, 356th.....Some great squads back in the day that I remember.

Is +Craz around here that anyone knows about?

I was just a marginal pilot in AW, I just surrounded myself with great guys(and pilots) and made sure they flew in the right direction. You should know somethings wrong though when I go over my briefings I never discuss the whole "when we land" process.
-
It's a blessing to have 38 Pilots a plenty. For those of us that fly the Jug.....we aren't the biggest target in the area
when the 38s arrive :aok

pffft Hajo! you should try flying my mossie a few sorties, after that you'll feel like a spitfire in that tiny cute little jug :p

A solution occurs to me. We could have it set up so that everyone can go in the arena, however only people who have a TERRIBLY low ktd ratio or whatever you want to base it on, can shoot and bomb things unless a newb is joined to a plane to observe good tequnique.
-
No way, no how are you going to get everyone in the game to play by YOUR rules. Though I share your aggravation, there are times that I just feel like a good furball.
Best solution is to STAY AWAY from the big fights. Grab your squaddies and plan a strategy to attack a base where nothings going on.
Most likely, those who just go up for the kill wont bother you, they'll be too busy furballing. The people who show up to thwart your attack are more likely to understand and appreciate the full content of the game.
-
Did you really just use the word 'strategy' and "attack a base where there is nothing going on", in the same sentence?
-
I'm thinking he's meaning go and pick a fight somewhere, rather than no resistance base taking Guppy.

How is that a bad idea? Or at the very least one that leads you to belive I don't play? I think the idea of a training arena is to help people improve, and get better. Not just in flight but in dogfighting, bombing, and gv'ing.

Maybe because there already is a training arena in AH. You might want to check it out sometime.

Yes, but anyone can go in, anyone can shoot, anyone can bomb. I suggested that only people of a certian skill level or people with a low KDT ratio, or whatever you wish to use to show someone who could use improvment, could shoot, or bomb, or things on that order, while anyone can go in. It was a suggestion to keep more expirenced pilots from shooting up newbs (they wouldn't be killed, but would keep flying, similar to the planes circling the airfield in the offline arena), and from driving them off. But they can still have a newb joined to them and that will allow them to fire and bomb, and things on that line, but only to demonstrate tequnique and good form.

I have outlets all over the Main Arenas. Just look for bits of bright green trim on the spinners and rudder tips. If you find a gun bay door it says Corky Jr on the outside. Should be parts all over the place.
-
Ok, will check it out. Nem up from washington to Main. ETA 7 hrs.
Aw crap, I just started a new outlet for spare parts.
