Title: Frame Rate II
Post by: Goat1 on August 03, 2009, 09:23:19 AM

I'm reposting this in the hope that Skuzzy will see it:

My frame rate is in the dirt even with detailed terrain turned off, plus my mouse freezes up.
I've tried all the hints in the other posts with no success.
I know this topic has been beaten to death, but if there is any more ideas that may help I would
appreciate them. Here's what my system looks like:

Just 1 more thing, I'm using a wireless router, would a hard wire connection work better?

Also I checked by CPU usage while in game, jumps from 4-100%.
Looked at the Task Manager and the System Idle Process is jumping from 17-85%.
Any Ideas what is causing this?

Thanks Goat1

In game, the CPU usage should be 100%, all the time.

I am more interested in what is going on when the computer is supposed to be idle.

How many processes are running the background?
What does the "CPU Usage" do in the Task Manager (Processes tab, bottom center; watch it a minute)?
Title: Re: Frame Rate II

I have 46 processes running at idle, I run a program call "Game Booster" that lowers my processes to 30 when I play.
The CPU usage jumps from 0-7% at idle

Thanks;

7%!!!  That is just wrong.  It should bounce from 0 to 1, maybe 2 percent.  7 percent is way too high.  While it does not sound like much, the granularity of the Task Manager is quite atrocious.  To show 7%, there could be spikes to 90% going on.

7% indicates you have something pretty heavy running on your computer that you do not know about.

Goat, could you post a screen shot of the processes running? It will help some of us determine if it's services running or if it's junk running. Either one can be reduced to the 20's.

Thanks, how do I find out what's running?
Also how do I post a screen shot.

Thanks;

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc. Now go to the, "Processes" tab. At the bottom left make sure, "Show Processes from all Users" is checked (or clicked). Now expand the window to show as many processes as possible. Now press Alt+Prt Scn (Should be next to scroll lock). Afterward open a program such as Windows Paint (Start>Programs>Accessories>Paint) and press Ctrl + V (Paste). Now simply save the image to a location such as your desktop, upload it to an image-hosting server such as Image Shack (http://www.imageshack.us), then post the direct link to the image into a post here within

I have almost the same set up as Goat, AMD Athlon 3200 2.2ghz 1.5mb memory with an ATI Radon 512 card and see almost the same symptons.  I am running about 55 processes, tried using Game Booster and it consistently locked up my computer while only dropping the running processes into the mid 40 range.

I can run the 2.14 with graphics off and improved stuttering, however my frame rate fluctuates wildly.  With advanced graphics and even the lowest levels, the game is almost unplayable.

While I am typing this blog, with all programs shut down and 53 processes running, my CPU usage is fluctuating between 2 and 79%

I am open to suggestions.

50-ish?  :O

A clean Windows install is ~20.

Wow.  Shut off some stuff.

How do I know what to shut down and what to keep?

I think there is a sticky  that Skuzzy put up somewhere.  Maybe I can find it.

<------  Not an expert, but........

Some programs will do it for you.

FSAutoStart, EndItAll, etc.

Some of them will even tell you what is necessary or not.

If you are not running on a home network, a bunch of stuff can be shut off.  Print spoolers can be shut down, the list goes on.

Usually, though.  the stuff that is above and beyond ~30 processes is clutter.

I remove it?

Like I said, I'm not an expert, and I'd hate to tell you what is safe and what is not.

D/L one of the programs I mentioned, or something like it.  Try it.  Most of the will tell what is safe and what is not.

Most will also re-start processes after you exit the game.

VonMessa's method is by far the easiest. However, if you want to do it manually (might teach you something about the computer and keeping the system in optimum operating conditions) please continue reading.

Processes will be installed and registry entries written which tell the computer to start the process or service when the system starts. This is because some of the applications are checking for updates, providing functionality, or simply allowing the system to run. A whole bunch of these processes really DO NOT need to be running in order to work on your computer. Here's a few pointers on reducing the running processes:

In Goat1's case, there's a few processes which can be shut down. Here's a list:

soffice.bin (Sounds similar to a Microsoft Office program. Don't believe it's critical)
aolwbspd.exe (Could be a connection agent. More than likely just a nuisance)
soffice.exe (Again, seems to be something similar to Microsoft Office)
acsd.exe (Unknown. I've never seen this process running. Try ending it to see what happens)
qttask.exe (Quick Time Task. It mainly checks for updates and readies Quick Time for immediate response to video file input)
ALCXMNTR.exe (Seen it before, don't know what it is. I just know I've stopped it with no adverse effects)
avgtray.exe (The task-bar icon you see when AVG is running. You can re-enable it from the start menu by opening AVG)
mmtask.exe (Seen it before, don't know what it is. Simply know it can be stopped with no adverse effects)
waol.exe (Once again, it could be a connection agent.)
-OPTIONAL- explorer.exe (This is your desktop. It will disable the Windows button and anything you see on your desktop (icons and start menu). Re-start the task by going to File>New Task (Run)...>explorer.exe )
SaiMfd.exe (Probably Saitek related. See what happens when you stop it)
ProfilerU.exe (Saitek Profile. I'm guessing when you stop it any mounted profiles will be released)
rnathchk.exe (No idea. However it seems to be related to something that was installed into the system (game, codec, etc...))
shwicon2k.exe (Again, no idea. Shouldn't hurt you to stop it)
shellmon.exe (Again, no idea. Shouldn't hurt you to stop it)
aoltray.exe (This could be part of an AOL connection agent. Yet I don't foresee any harm in stopping it)
realsched.exe (Real Player scheduler. Mainly for automatic updates)
kbd.exe (Task which associates special keys on your keyboard with real computer assignments. For instance, pressing Internet launches IE or Firefox.)
hphmon05.exe (Another lousy HP task. No idea what it does other than eat up system resources)
HpqCmon.exe (Once again, no idea. Just know its from HP and probably worthless)
hpsysdrv.exe (Once again, no idea. ^You guessed it)
ctfmon.exe (No idea what it does. While it is Windows related, I have shut it down multiple times with no adverse effects to my system's stability)

NOTE: While shutting down processes may change the appearance or stability of your system, it WILL NOT destroy or alter ANYTHING. If for some reason you feel you did something wrong, restart your computer. All processes which were ended will be restarted.

Now for system services (Squeeze out a little extra). ;)

(If you haven't stopped explorer.exe) Go to Start>Run. Type in: services.msc   Press OK.
(If you stopped explorer.exe) From the Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc). Go to File>New Task (Run)... Type in: services.msc   Press OK.

Here's a list of services which can be stopped. Please note, stopping a service may affect your system performance and stability. However, restarting the computer will restart the service. The only time that a service will not be restarted is if you, "disable" the service. Therefore I do not recommend you change the settings of the services we are discussing, only stop them (To stop a service right-click it then click, "Stop").

(From Windows XP)

Application Layer Gateway Service
Automatic Updates
Background Intelligent Transfer Service
Error Reporting Service
Help and Support
Machine Debug Manager (May not be seen on all machines)
Print Spooler
Security Center
System Restore Service
Task Scheduler
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
Themes (Will alter appearance of EVERYTHING)
Volume Shadow Copy
Windows Time
Wireless Zero Configuration (ONLY IF YOU ARE USING A WIRED CONNECTION, NOT WIRELESS!!)

Once again, if you believe something is wrong with your system, restart it. All stopped processes and services will be started again.

If you want to know how to reduce some of the startup processes so you don't have to constantly run through this list every time you're about to play, send me a PM.

Here is a link for Services Guide Windows XP  http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm (http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm) . I have used their recommendations for two years with no problems. Gives you some recommendations for squeezing a little more out of a system. As all system tweeks go be informed, backed up, and safe.

I was able to reduce my processes to 23 in game, now my frame rate is up to 59fps, but still jumps a bit sometimes down to around 25.
But it's a heck of alot better now.

Thanks for all the help

No two Windows systems are exactly the same.  Some things running in the background have to do with the hardware configuration of the computer.

I would have posted that screenshot a  long time ago had I thought it would have helped, but as soon as I did, someone would end up with a computer that would not boot.
