I believe that Aces high should make a more active effort to encourage more European members. I have noticed that those pilots from the old world are a good influence to the new world colonials.
What do you think? :x

Well the US most not have thought that back in the old days, we kicked your butss off our land :D
-
You will have to drag them kicking and screaming from their archaic combat flight sims that they are currently playing.
-
there are a surprising amount of euros that play the game zack. I've done my best to get most of the brits in the same squad but people aren't always that forthcoming and who am I to tell them otherwise.
TBH I enjoy the game much more in our time zone as it isn't as full on and crowded. Less ganging, hording and watermelon talking. Not to say it doesn't still happen but throw in another 500 Americans and all they want to do is kill, get drunk and blow up everything they see. :lol.
would be interesting to see the figures of how many subscribers are non US. I'd guess at 20%.

I just want to get drunk......... anything killed or blownup in the process is just bonus
-
I have viewed some photos from a Eurocon (2007 I think it was) talk about getting drunk and blowing stuff up. FPO recipes will have to be passed to different countries.

AH isn't very user-friendly if you don't speak English. A game that wants to market itself to an international audience will often have a bunch of different flags that you can click at the top of its webpage for your native language, e.g. German, French, Spanish, etc. Despite what many of us Americans are led to believe, there are plenty of Europeans that do not speak English, usually because English language TV shows are dubbed in their country. We've seen how hard a time many people have with AH, even when they read the instructions; now make it in a foreign language and see how well they do. :P
-
I get a kick every time i go to other euro countiress and see dubbed movies and tv series. Bay Watch dubbed in italian is something you just have to see (and hear) :rofl
-
Bruv is from France and has no problem with the game :x
-
That would make for a more interesting Channel 200. We have an italian squaddie who still thinks Italy won WWII! :rofl

yes, the eurocon is the perfect training center learning to fly with 2 glasses of milk. cant wait for EC 2010
well back to topic, i dont know if more europeans are needed, i think the most difference between US and EU Players actual is, that there are nearly no playing european kids at AH2. Most european players are adults! I am yery happy to meet people from around our blue pearl. Its great Fun to build up a squadron where us and european players have their base at. I meet a lot of players during the last years at the EC. One of the best Moments happend when my Friend KC from Portland came over to the EC!!! He took the longest way to be there. So that blew up my mind!
Its good to see how friendships can be founded through a flight sim game. I personal like the idea to fly in a mixed squadron, and i dont want to talk my native language there. Even if my grammar sucks, i try to improve my english skills (which is a hard sometimes).
The problem is to make advertising for a very small corner in the big gaming market. The Dogfighting MMO market is a niche, so its hard to make Advertising in the right way. My suggestion is, that there are only 1% of upgrown reading gaming magazines, so where to place Advertising to get new European pilots into the game. The only way is an online presence, maybe advertising inside the speciliesed Aviatation Magazines. But if you caculate just one Advertising action in one Mag, you can invest very easy 8000-10000$. Lookin at the return on invest side, its burning money. So if AH2 needs new players, it also belongs to all of us to telling our Friends about it, createing Homepages, a lot of HP should use new screenshots with the new Version Pics. Lets flood the WWW with AH2 messages. There are much much more ideas, have to work now,

I would like us to fight as if it was WW2.
Brits, Yanks, Ivan's and free french one side in our planes and tanks. Gerries, Japs and Ities on the other. The central europeans were usually on both sides as were the italians later on so they can choose.
Being "The Allies" of course we will always win
:salute
The only problem with this idea is it totally ridiculous and wont work becuase their are too many US types (and for about 100 other reasons) BUT
I WANT IT

Ya know, that never occurred to me until you mentioned it...what DO European kids do? (I know here in US, kids USED to do this thing called "go outside", where they would play things like "sports"...at the "playground"....now they sit in front of Xbox/PC, and eat cheetos )

Jesus Christ. I dont care if i highjack this thread or not, but david Hassellof in this condition? I just don’t believe it. I hope he will be alright again. But the most socking of all is this moron that brought that video up on you tube. This is a disgrace. This public exposure is the worst thing for any human being. This is not a civilized society any more. We live under the internet terror of public exposure. And they are people that they laughing about it? This is just unacceptable at least according to my personal standards of human dignity.

speaking for my both ones ( 9 and 12), they are swimming actual. i allow 2 hours multi media each day, not more! Yes my eduction is based on discussion but also on the iron fist :D please dont tell it my wife... But they can decide what they wanna do, playing wii, pc or watching a movie. I dont talk about sports, my boys MUST make team sports, and they like it. Both boys play soccer, they go to windsurf and they love their trampoline doing loops and stuff. but no doubt that more and more kids are getting lazy and much more fat than ever

ya know American kids have trouble speaking correct english ... our kids are worse :D
so they usually play games available in their native languages

Egad, have you ever seen how kids text each other? That sort of communication is gonna supplant proper English eventually, I'm afraid (lol, and probably French as well...just wait, our idiocracy culture will infect your country too! :cry)
-
I think channel 200 would be more tolerable if it wasnt in English :devil

Back in Air Warrior I used to have a wingman that was an Australian living in Italy .....how that for a combo? :)
Helm ...out

Dhyrans kids are the exception.
It may not be as extreme as in the US yet (we always lag a few years behind in adopting your cultural advances), but it's generally the same trend. All those available electronic games and readily available TV changed everything. When I was a kid some 30 years ago, we could receive only 2 channels, which started to broadcast around 4pm (!) each day. Only 1-2 hours kids program on any day at most. You had to go outside to prevent getting bored to death ;)
When I visited my parents last week, i took the time to walk around all those places of my youth, on a sunny sunday afternoon.
No kids. The playgrounds were deserted, the woods silent, only adults at the riverside. There was a construction site with about two dozen houses in varying degrees of completion. In my time, it would have been overrun by kids looking for adventure...

....
well, maybe a bit lusche, but i got that feeling it belongs where you living. i am living i a small village, a lot of the kids are very sporty here, because we adults observe the missusage of television and computers. if all got an eye on it the kids must play outside. We see a turnaround here actual!

They are probably studying their butts off to pass the baccalaureate exam. A high school education in most of Europe is almost equivalent to a college degree in the United States. Or, if they funneled you into a trade school at the age of ~12, you are learning something practical in order to make a living.

I've seen a lot of Europeans playing Il-2. You can set the game up with different languages, so it's user friendly if you don't speak English. I've seen Czech servers, French servers, Italian servers, etc. Most of these virtual pilots have never heard of AH, and if they have they were often turned off by the graphics.
-

Won't happen ,I wrote one or two time in French and I was muted ...

thats correct, buts IL2 is not a MMO game, most server are limeted due their bandwith connection. Some idea are great, but these Server are private driven, i tried some 2 years ago, shot the server owner twice in one hour, was banned 1 minute later. Thats not realy Fun. So, back to topic, more good designed HP and more advertising online is the way to bring more EU players into AH imho

There are some very, very lame servers out there.
But yes, back on topic: AH needs to branch out linguistically if it wants to attract more European customers. Spanish, French, German, and Italian documentation would be a start. Straffo mentions that he was muted for typing in French on 200...well, that would have to end, too.
-

I really don't think mutliple languages on country or 200 are a good idea for the community. Better broken communication in a common language than babylonian confusion.
Imagine the text buffer scrolling down and you are not able to understand half of the things that's being talked there. All this German, French, Spanish and Finnish...
And of course HTC would have to monitor each language for insults & such.
I do talk in German on help channel, I don't have problem with any language there. I sometimes write one or two sentences in German on other channels,
But every conversation in German on other public channels I quickly try to take to a private channel, out of courtesy to all the other players.

When HT and Pyro ran Warbirds there was communication in Finnish on the common channel, Portuguese too. It didn't cause any issues.
Remember, this thread is about what would have to happen to attract a more international player base, not what's best for those who understand English.
-
Well, if you are fluent in another language, by all means translate the help files/net aces/etc. Do a good enough job and who knows? Maybe you'll be rewarded for your efforts (at least with a few new guys into the game).
I don't think anyone would have a problem with these files being translated, though I think it would be polite and a good idea to ask permission before posting them...
-
Sadly, I am not that fluent. I speak French just well enough so that native speakers want to correct me on every mistake I make. :lol

You have to be careful to retain the balance. Not everthing that may attract a few more players will be good for the game on the long run.
Community is very important, and I think I can say, it's very important to Hitech too. Remember, one of his arguments for doing the arena split is to get better interactions between players again instead of being anonymous in a huge arena with all those messages scrolling too fast to read 'em all.
I think, there's not much difference in missing half the messages because they are too many... or because half of them are in foreign languages.
-

Actually, I was thinking about doing a German translation of the Trainer Corps Pages for some time.

All you would have to do would be to learn a few words to understand 90% of the chatter. Words like dweeb, tard, gangbang in 5 different languages, and your good!

yes and Beer :aok

That sounds like a worthwhile effort. Perhaps on the Wiki with a link from the htc Help pages?

English is the official language internationally for aviation. So why not in here?
-
Well, we are not really aviators... just gamers ;)
English is the language of this game because it's as US based company, American designer and the majority are US players.
And not because there is some sort of regulation...

The staff at aceshigh may live in America but they were all born in a pie shop in a small town called Wigan in the north of England.
The pie shop was hit by the mad cow disease problem and thus had to find alternative options to gain new trade ie aceshigh which is a anagram of no more pies please. :uhoh

maybe because of summer holidays? ...just joking :D
But you are right, you don´t see a lot of kids outside. Most of them stay at home. Its kind of they have a social phobia or a PC/Internet/XBox addiction. I guess there are a lot of (non english speaking) european players who would like to play this game. All the instructions are in English, communication is in English and if you are hooked to the game, you have to pay. Thats ok, but kind of complicated, cause not all have credit cards. Money order seems to be complicated too. Easier would be, something like paypal.

I think the glossary and controls reference were very good places to start (hint hint Lusche :) ).
I've saved and uploaded the basic glossary of AHII aeronautical and game-slang terminology to our squad site, in MS Word 97-2003 format. It's just the english language terms in one column, with a blank column next to it so that one can insert equivalent meanings in whatever target language is desired. Find it here:
http://www.musketeers.org/AHII_Glossary_template_wrd97.doc (http://www.musketeers.org/AHII_Glossary_template_wrd97.doc)
I hope that's enough to get anyone that's interested in doing this in another language started off more quickly. :salute
FWIW,

Language has never been an issue for me. I've often spoke to Manurin in his native tongue on both text and vox. Same goes for some of the gerries.
Even though my vocab is limited I thought it would be nice to make the effort to make them feel welcome.
