The cool thing about this movie is the guy made a short film of it
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tx5OYVHPO2k

This guy was working with Peter Jackson on a Halo movie which when nearly finished stopped being made. from there Jackson said to the guy make your movie into a full feature film and gave him a totally free run...and what came out of it is district 9. As those who have watched know, it is all set in the slums of Joburg SA. This is the type of thing Spielberg used to do for the relativley unknowns... This guy could be a new big name for the movie buisness...some fresh blood to an almost stagnated industry.

I really enjoyed the film alot.  Creative, fresh, dark, funny, clever, disturbing, challenging, and it even had a "death by flying pig carcass" moment.

I give it a 8.5 or 9 out of 10.

I saw this for free on Thursday night.   It was an excellent movie.  I was laughing at the the throngs of people coming out of there saying: "Why was this filmed in Johannesburg?"   I "got it", 5 minutes into the film.

But I agree, it good to finally see a movie that was not "a remake" for a change.   I cannot wait for "Dambusters".   THAT is the movie I'm waiting for.

Just got back from it...
First movie this year I felt was actually worth the expenditure of time and monies.
Nice to see something ORIGINAL on the screen, and the SFX are slick.  Camera work isn't nearly like "Cloverfield" (which means it's better and steadier than Cloverfield), and I felt the acting was genuinely good.  It's obvious there's going to be a following installment.....but I won't spoil it for those who don't want details.

This movie's gonna catch on and be the summer surprise.

9 eels out of 10 from me.

I am so glad to hear the good reviews on this one.  Good sci-fi movies seem to be so rare in the last couple of decades.  I had high hopes for this one, it appears that I might not be let down.

Actually, the "underlying theme" of District 9 being filmed in Johannesburg should give it away.   It isn't an "Alien Nation Ripoff", it is merely being "overthought" into something more complex.   I don't want to spell it out, as it would spoil some of it.

But it's about time, Directors get this creative.

These guys were actually making the Halo film but apparently nobody was willing to pick it up so they made this to pass the time. This cost 30 mil to make and made 37 mil in the first weekend I believe.

This is the best I could find on the cancelled project in a couple of minutes. but you get the Idea

That's just a politically correct way of saying it's an 'Alien Nation' knockoff.. :lol

But it's about time, Directors get this creative.

I guess it's creative borrowing several ideas from another source and build on it to make it better.  Whoever
owns the rights to 'Alien Nation' probably won't mind one bit, once the producers of 'District 9' hand over a nice big juicy royalty check..

No, you don't "get" the parallels of the movie.   It has nothing to do with "Alien Nation", but it does have to do with the "Nation" it was filmed in.

Im not getting into the debate if D9 is a knockoff or not, considering I was only in the single digits in age when Alien Nation came out. But thats the problem with creating new movies today. What hasnt been made into a movie, book, or video game? Anything created now will always be accused of being a knockoff because at some point and time it was already done.

*A couple minor spoilers here*

I enjoyed the movie quite a lot.  What really made me happy was for the most part I was able to suspend my disbelief, primarily due to the style with which it was made.  This made me happy, as there were only a couple "oh come on..." moments for me.  I haven't been able to say that about a sci-fi movie in many a moon.  That being said, I do not believe it deserves the 10/10 that so many people are willing to throw at anything decent nowadays.  I would however give it a solid 8 or 8.5 .

Allegory is a simple but effective means to get a point across.  For those who did not pick up on it, please go back to 9th grade English (or your preferred language) class.   I really liked the pick of J-burg for a shooting location, particuarly because they shot it in an actual slum that was being "relocated."  It added a gritty and realistic feel to the whole set, and increased the immersion significantly.  Also I have a hard time with the complaints that the movie portrayed humans in too dark a nature -- but that may be the rampant cynic in me.  I thought if anything the humans were almost unrealistically trusting of the prawns, particularly during the eviction.

Anyway, it is definitely a good flick and (without having seen too many) my favorite of the summer.  It is definitely a bit of a rip-off of alien nation, but is in my opinion a significantly better movie.  I would be happy without a sequel as I don't enjoy being spoon-fed contrived plot lines just to "finish" a story.  (See BSG, season 4  ;) )  That being said, I have a hard time believing one will not show up in 3 summers.

No, you don't "get" the parallels of the movie.   It has nothing to do with "Alien Nation", but it does have to do with the "Nation" it was filmed in.

The article I linked above covers that point, and further explains how that point is also a knockoff from 'Alien Nation'.

District 9's a great movie, but I wouldn't make the claim that it is original, until you've seen 'Alien Nation' at least once plus the tv series..

Film
In 2005, a script for a film adaptation of Halo was written by Alex Garland[100]—which D. B. Weiss and Josh Olson rewrote during 2006[101][102]—for a 2008 release. The movie was to be developed and released by 20th Century Fox, under the creative oversight of Microsoft.[103] Peter Jackson was slated to be the executive producer,[104] with Neill Blomkamp as director. Before Blomkamp signed on, Guillermo del Toro was in negotiations to direct.[105]

The crew stopped and resumed preproduction of the film several times.[106] Blomkamp declared the project dead in late 2007,[107] but Jackson replied that the film would still be made.[108] Blomkamp and Jackson collaborated on District 9, but the director told /Film that he was no longer considering working on a Halo film if the opportunity arose,[109] saying that after working on the film for five months before the project's collapse it would be difficult to return. The rights for the film have since reverted back to Microsoft.[110]

Blomkamp commented the Master Chief worked from a video gamer's perspective, but dramatically does not hold much weight because of his faceless nature. The character as depicted in the film would have been "the most important supporting cast member". Instead, "other characters around him [...] did most of the emotional heavy lifting", with their story exploring their perception of the Master Chief.[111] After Jackson's project stalled, Stuart Beattie wrote a film adaptation of The Fall of Reach, complete with concept art.[112] While there have been rumors that director Steven Spielberg was in talks to produce Halo,[113] Microsoft has responded that the film is still on hold.[114]

I can't really see how you would change that. The long island accents (and popped collars, and blow-outs) wore thin on me after being surrounded by them in college for 4 years, but there isn't a whole lot you can do about how someone else speaks...

I rented it. It was decent. The whining got to me a bit. But then again if I was in that poor fellows shoes I would do more than whine. Still a good Sci-fi movie worth seeing. I'd give it a 7.5 on a 10 scale.

Tell you what I really enjoyed. Here you had a somewhat soft man coming rising above himself to answering the call. I don't know how else to put it with out giving the movie away. Like others I thought it had a taste of Cloverfield in it. I didn't look but I wonder if it was the same director as Cloverfield.

What, I'd like to see something about where it came from, there was an online viral video made by the production company that had to do with a girl that was dating a guy who left to Japan to do some secret work, there were about 9 videos and in one he sends her a package and tells her not to open it unless something bad happens, so it seemed like they were setting it up for a prequal to find out just how this thing came to be.

There is a 15 minute short film from the director that is a sort of prequel to the movie, it details the landing of the 'prawns' in South Africa.  It's what got Peter Jackson to notice the guy and eventually led to making the semi-sequel District 9.
