Title: Puffy Ack
Post by: RELIC on August 19, 2009, 12:42:15 PM
Anyone know if the lethality of the auto acks was increased?  There is clearly more of it - burst wise, but did the chances of getting hit and damaged by it also increase?  In my experience, it's been really nasty since the update.   :(

That would be a resounding YES!!! And as much as I hate losing an engine from the puffy after a few "pops" it does make the game much more realistic and challenging. ( Of course I do think my favorite ride the " Hog" is too susceptible to losing an engine ) :rock

I hate puffy ack. That said, it does what its supposed to do and I appreciate that. Make lone jabo runs on a cv intersting. Time to modify tactics and treat the puffy ack with some respect.

The Leathality didn't increse, just there is more of it to hit you.

I've been trying to get this addressed for a while. The Corsair's engine is absolutely made of glass.

Sorry you are correct, I meant to post that there was a lot more of it, with greater range and accuracy it seems. Great catch.

You are sooooo correct, IMHO it needs to be looked at, and give this great bird it's due respect.  :P

Puffy ack should be removed from the game until it no longer fires through mountains.

Easy fix....remove mountains.

The way the puffy is set up is the #1 reason why you can't criticize folks for sinking carriers, despite how it ends the fight. A close #2 is genius "strategists" on CVs doing THEIR best to end the fight by shelling down the hangars.

ROFLMAO!!!  :rofl

Anyone who complains about the puffy ack needs to settle down and grab another twinkie...there is more of it...and the bursts look slightly bigger than they did (or I suddenly developed fish eye)...haven't seen the "through the mountains bit yet"...it's fairly easy to get through...so what's the big deal?

A night or two ago i was telling my Squad Co about how bad it was to pony's as we where a ways aways from a enemy CV then one minuet later one burst i was in tower.I so hate it,i don't mind being killed by another player, cant stand AI killing me.I would not say anything about it as puffy Ack in real life is a killer, but it happens to me so much,i don't fight anywhere near a enemy CV or i die.For now on when there is a enemy CV attacking my base i don't defend that one any more

I have to admit that I can stand it more now than I used to.  It's way worse and has ruined more fights recently than it used to, but at least now it does it in style :D

is the CV ack more dangerous to level bombers then it was?

I know it is to Jabos but if Lancs can still skate over at 5k, without missing a beat, then what good is it?

Realistic ? Hmm, I was teasing it last night just to see how it had changed. I find it to be much intense although less accurate.
As far as realistic, well I'm not sure puffy back in the day could range you at 10-15 miles, but I could be wrong  :aok

You're getting ranged by puffy ack at 10-15 MILES???  :huh

I've seen 300 to 30,000 feet...and a radius of maybe 5 miles at worst...you must have been getting shot at by a haxxor on a 5 inch gun.   :lol

My only beef with the puffy is that it starts going off the INSTANT you break 3k.  Now if there is a just a constant 360 degree barrage of puffy with proximity fusees that don't activate below 3k being blasted out from each CV this would make sense.  But since the puffy seems to target individual aircraft this does seem to be the case.  Unless of course puffy ack shells are supposed to travel at the speed of light, in which case disregard.

So the amount of damage you take if you get hit is the same - its just that now there are just a lot more of them exploding around you?   :noid

Yes more realistic. If you ever watched any films, documentaries, or movies pertaining to WWII, you will see that there was a lot of ack from ships. Which in comparison prior to the change we really didn't have that recreated to it's full effect in AH, until now. At least in my opinion. As for the range of 10-15 miles, I haven't seen that at all, and I don't think I ever will in the game. Not saying I am a fan of it, especially with the current CV bug that allows a sunken CV group to respawn back where it was killed at. But as a simulation game designed to recreate war from that era, it is more accurate.

Finally! Someone actually took the time to do some research on 5" 38 caliber anti-aircraft fire.

A 5" 38 caliber gun had a range of over 10 miles. Do the research.
With RAP rounds that range could at times be drastically increased even tho the accuracy was very much deminished. Anyone have an idea what a RAP round is/was?

Salute Baumer! Well Done!

Now if some of these "Eww ack hurts me" whiners would check it out as much as they supposedly "research" the aircraft and flying, maybe this whine would finally die!

1.  Can puffy ack kill-shoot itself (or destroy a friendly aircraft, when the puffy ack is manned)?

2.  Can cv groups realistically get THAT close to EVERY shoreline in the world?

Thanks SIM,

RAP- Rocket Assisted Projectile from the navweps site;  the 5 inch "RAP round had a maximum range of 23,770 yards (21,735 m)".

The 8" LRBA used by the Cruisers we have in game would be awesome as well  :devil  but they weren't developed until the late 60's.

"5) In the late 1960s the "Gunfighter" program at Indian Head Naval Ordnance Station developed Long Range Bombardment Ammunition (LRBA) projectiles.  These were Arrow Shells with a body diameter of 4.125" (10.4 cm) and a fin diameter of 5.0" (12.7 cm) which were sized to be fired from 8" (20.3 cm) guns by using a sabot and obturator system.  Tests with these in 1968 showed maximum ranges of 72,000 yards (66,000 m).  The burster in these shells was PBX-w-106, a castable explosive.  Sabot weighed 17.6 lbs. (8.0 kg) and was discarded as the projectile left the muzzle.  After a test firing off Okinawa of three inert-loaded shells, USS St. Paul (CA-73) in 1970 conducted a two day bombardment mission against Viet Cong positions at ranges up to 70,000 yards (64,000 m).  At the time, St. Paul was the only 8" gunned cruiser still in active service." That's over 39.5 miles away!

Still, AH flak doesn't have collision detection (flies thru obstacles like mountains), and updates instantly (the moment you breach 3kft, even thousands of yards away).   If you're maneuvering at 400+ from 10K away, there ought to be a significant delay in the flak following you.

There was a map before the arena splits where one of the airfields was right above a strat target. And I mean LITERALLY. You looked down the hill from the end of the runway and the strat is RIGHT THERE. This airfield was NOT the Zone base, either, which means there were times where you had the airfield, but NOT the strat target. The airfield was a high base at ~4-5k.

It was NOT fun taking puffy ack fire while sitting on the runway.
