so I decided Id really like to put together a new system, Ive been looking around and I found a bare bones kit that I think looks good but Im not sure.
its a tempest black case, Asus P6T LGA 1366 Motherboard, Intel Core i7 920 Processor BX80601920, 2 Sets of Corsair XMS3 Tri Channel 6GB PC12800 DDR3 Memory, Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1.5TB Hard Drive,Corsair TX750W 750-Watt Power Supply
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4601609&Sku=B69-1054 (http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4601609&Sku=B69-1054)
its been a while since i built a system, but this seems awsome, although Im not sure about 12GB of ram, seems like way to much to me for the price. Im looking to spend around 2000-2500 at most.
I was thinking about adding on a new cpu heatsink + fan and a new graphics card of course.
running it all on windows vista. Im really unsure about all these parts and maybe somone around here knows better then me. Im not even sure what would be adiquet cooling for this setup. any help anyone can give me would be much appreatiated.

Just a little note about Humble's mobo choice...if you're going to use an Asus board...don't use Intel cpu's...they don't play nice and support is poop.
Asus - Gigabyte - MSI = great for AMD support
Intel - XFX - EVGA = great for Intel support
:O :huh  At the total prices listed...I could build massive system with multiple monitors...I thought the whole idea of building a system was getting the most bang for the buck...not breaking the bank.
-
I was using the MB in the "bare bones" kit to make as close a comparison as possible. In reviewing the Toms article they found that the total markup was about $200 vs the cost of the parts so the truth is that you can't build the same system for significantly less.

Personally I see now more of an issue than there should have been. There was a post from an unsatisfied customer, which compliments the many posts from very satisfied customers. This thread was very quickly shutdown by Skuzzy because he personally felt offended and for no other reason. After all if we allow "advertising" then we should allow complaints as well.<snip>
It was nothing personal at all. A false and baseless accusation of HTC's integrity was made and then a more pointed baseless and false accusation of my integrity was made. The thread was locked as it would have served no purpose to leave it open. The two parties directly involved had their say in a thread that should have never been started to begin with.

humble, first and foremost, this thread is not about another business. It is a user asking for help/recommendations on his choices. Comment on that all you like.
No one gets a free pass to do anything that violates the forum posting rules. I will say it again. If anyone sees anything that is out of line, hit the "Report to moderator" link. The issue will be dealt with. How many times do I have to say that before it sinks in?
humble I am not going to allow you, or anyone else, to hijack this players thread for any personal agendas anyone may have. If you have comment on the players choice of hardware, then feel free to comment on it. How many times does that have to be said?

cldlogic,
are you a newegg promo newsletter subscriber?
they just emailed some good combo deals both Intel & AMD setups ( CPU, MB, 4 gigs memory ), although it is not the Intel Core i7 920 Processor & MB you have posted above........

Its the very definition of personal Skuz. You prove Batch's point when you say, "then a more pointed baseless and false accusation of my integrity was made."
Nothing wrong with you taking it personal.

Ok, let's make this the last hijack of this players thread, shall we?
A reaction to a derogatory remark is just that, a reaction. That thread lock was a logical thing to do given the fact many forum rule violations had occurred in that thread. The highlight of the violations was the false and baseless accusations. To my knowledge, "false" and/or "baseless" are not terms equated to something personal. In this context they were simply accurate descriptions of what had been said.
Personally, it angered me to have such accusations made. However, the thread lock had nothing to do with that. There was a blatant disregard for the forum posting rules. Challenge me on that, if one has to challenge me for anything.
I was very honest about my distaste for people who do what was done in that thread. As a board admin, I am, at times, obliged to let the community know why things happen and what the ramifications are for those things. I hope I made it clear, to all, baseless/false accusations will not be tolerated when directed towards any member of the community.
If anyone else wishes to discuss this matter further, please PM me and let this fellow have his thread back. Anymore posts not dealing specifically with the original posters topic will be excised from this point forward.

Wrong.
Have used Asus boards and Intel chips exclusively on my last three builds with no problems.
:salute

Wow talk about Hi-jacking a forum...............can we get back to CPU'z and good deals............nothing personnal

12G of memory seems a bit excessive, unless your planning on running 64 bit OS. Oh, and the mem quoted in that barebones is out of stock at Tiger. Maybe you would get a free upgrade :)
-
cdlogic...just off the top of my head...and this is just pure IMO conservatively speaking.
Your basic home computer user tends to look at the life cycle of a computer to be "when it dies"...in the business world "end of life" for a computer is around 4 years...hard core gamers generally are 2 to 3 years, maybe 4 with some upgrades...then there is the casual high performance gamer, generally 3 to 4 years, push it to 5 with some upgrades, unless it breaks down, as long as their favorite game still plays on it.
The core i7 Nehalem processors are power hungry processors (130w) compared to the Core2 Quad 95w cpu's...and you're not gaining any significant performance.
Triple channel memory locks you into a minimum of 3 sticks of memory which if you have had to deal with dual channel memory systems, it's a major pain.
A big fancy case is nice to look at but the chances that you are going to "recycle" it when it's time for a new system is very very slim since by that time there will be new cases out that catch your eye and more than likely this system will be relegated to doing something else or be given to someone who just needs a decent computer.
Unless you're considering running Windows7 64 bit with a lot of 64 bit apps, you don't need more than 2 gigabytes of memory with a 1 gigabyte video card to run Windows XP...but just for the sake of making sure you have adequate memory for the future though, 4 to 6 GB would be the "safe" thing to do.
So in a nutshell...if it were my money...I would consider looking at the components that would fit this cpu:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115130 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115130)
and this video card:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150391 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150391)
with this PSU or similar to it:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153072 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153072)
Then if there is money left over after your system is complete...consider a bigger monitor or multiple monitors...or maybe even a brand new stick setup (not sure what all you have now)...

Cldlogic,
Have you priced these things out separately? I haven't but the price seems high. Also, I'm not so sure about the corsair power supply.
Good luck on the build!
-
thanks gyrene i really appreatiate the help, I really like that power supply, but for the cpu it says it has a fsb of only 1333mhz, vs the original processor i wanted being like 1600-1800 something like that. also the heatsink and fan that comes with both processors is to weak, which means im going to have to buy a much better one anyway. i was thinking windows 7 anyway. The powering is very nice with the model you showed me. Also the 12mb L2 is awsome. Im seriously considering this cpu except for the fsb. do you think it would make much of a difference?
Im not sure i understand the tripple channel dual channel memory, why would that be a problem?
I wanted the 6gb memory for 3d modeling and a solid fsb for it. As well as gameing.
Also that video card looks sweet too, but the prob is im canadian and for some reason on the canadian site it says deactiveated item... anyway i wanted to ask if SLI is when you can throw in two cards and they work as one? like the first geforce i meantioned, i thought it would be a good idea to grab one of those, and if needed later on i could throw another one in for double the power when one wont cut it anymore.
anyway i think alot of people are right around here maybe i shouldnt spend that much, im definatly going to look around alot more before i order anything, i definatly shouldnt waste any money if i dont have to.
-
Canadian eh? That throws a whole new winky wrinkle into it.... :lol
First triple channel memory vs dual channel vs single channel...
With single channel if you have a single 2GB memory chip and that's all you want to put in your system...it will work no problems...ou can put more in 1 stick at a time.
With dual channel, you will need 2 exactly the same specs no variation (unless you want some strange things happening)...if you upgrade it has to be in pairs.
With triple channel...it's 3 times the headache...although the maximum memory for an i7 board is 12GB and the latest LGA 775 board is 8GB.
As far as performance goes..well yeah...you're gonna end up being able to handle more memory, but as of right now the latest LGA 775 motherboard will handle the exact same speed of RAM that i7 boards will take.
The current chipsets that support triple channel aren't faster throughput...it's still in the bleeding edge stages...(my co worker tried to put together an i7 920 based system last month and ended up having to return everything but the PSU because it wouldn't work, so he bought the processor I linked for you and put a system together based on that, and saved a couple of hundred)...
The difference in CPU front side bus speeds is negligible between the i7 2.66GHz and the Core2 Quad 3.0GHz...with the right components...from what I've been able to find on the i7 mobos, the front side is getting choked...whereas the socket 775 mobos are matched...I believe the difference is in the southbridge architecture.
This would be the motherboard for that processor, holds up to 8GB DDR3 memory:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813141009 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813141009)
Amazing how many boards out there only support DDR2 instead of DDR3 memory.
As for SLI and Crossfire - you can link 2 cards together (assuming your PSU and mobo support it) and combine the resources for better performance...strangely enough, it's just getting to the point where the driver/software control programs actually support the technology even though it's been out a couple of years...few applications or games actually support it though (can cause weird video problems)...
If that video card is not available for shipping to Canada see what you can find on one of these lists:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010380048%2050001402%201069633099%20106792634&name=GeForce%20GTX%20200%20Series (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010380048%2050001402%201069633099%20106792634&name=GeForce%20GTX%20200%20Series)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010380048%2050001669%201069633099%20106792634&name=GeForce%20GTX%20200%20Series (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010380048%2050001669%201069633099%20106792634&name=GeForce%20GTX%20200%20Series)
Ask the HTC crew what they use for their 3D modelling...I've seen people still using P4 extreme cpu's.
Forgot to mention...hard drives...whatever you do, use 2...operating system and programs on one...important data on the other...that way if you get an os crash all that stuff you wanted to keep doesn't end up needing a data recovery expert to find it.

Would have to disagree with the MB Gyrene. This one is better http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128358 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128358)
Why pay extra for the ability to do 3 way SLI if it's not going to happen. Plus it's just a better board. I use one and of course I didn't set it up, TD did that for me, but have tinkered and love it.
-
Nice choice Dragon...really nice board...I like Gigabyte for AMD support...but compared to that XFX board:
It only uses DDR2 memory = lower performance
ATI crossfire support instead of Nvidia SLI support
What's the warranty?
I looked at pretty much the entire set there...I wonder if someone else might have a greater selection....hmmm
I think this is the board I started out looking for but couldn't find on newegg:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4394541&csid=ITD&body=MAIN#detailspecs (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4394541&csid=ITD&body=MAIN#detailspecs)
When it comes to mobos...it's a really tough choice.
