So I'm in Orange and Rooks and Bish have #'s (rooks the most) and Knights are very short handed and getting it from both sides. (fun sometimes)
So I move to Blue and Knights have huge numbers, and Rooks are the short handed country (go figure).
Both arena choices were unacceptable if I want to fly as a Knight. Be the hoard or get hoarded gets old fast. (for me anyway) I could (and often do) change countries, but I have an idea that I wanted to toss out there that might fix the whole situation.
Is it POSSIBLE to COAD it so arenas are open/closed not based on total number of players but the number of players on a certain team. Tie it to ENY perhaps?
Example.
ORANGE
Bishops: 100
Knights: 75
Rooks: 125
Total # of players in Orange is 300
If you are a Knight or a Bishop you could log into Orange. If you are Rook you can not.
BLUE
Bishops: 100
Knights: 125
Rooks: 75
Total # of players in Blue is 300
If you are a Rook or a Bishop you could join Blue. If you are Knight you can not.
If both arenas were balanced you could log into EITHER arena.
By doing it this way a player would be "locked out" of one of the LW's for a far shorter time. I doesn't take that many players to shift ENY and balance the sides out.
The arenas would be balanced from the get-go so all in all there would be hardly any wait time to fly in the arena of choice (numbers like the above examples just wouldn't happen).
You would end up with two Late War arenas that are reasonably balanced and fun fight to be had by all.
I propose that these limitations kick in when ENY hits around 10-15 ish so this idea would also all but eliminate ENY restrictions. As soon as a country hits 15 ENY only players on the other country can log in and the sides balance out and ENY drops down quick.
Opinions? I for one think this would work and work well.
(edited out the change sides in lobby bit)
-
Or, make it where when you log in, it automatically puts you in the low number team. So when player 1 logs in, he might go bish cause they have lower numbers. then player 22 logs in, but he goes knights cause they have low numbers. that way, all sides remain somewhat even.
-
It's been talked about before. And, even though it makes a lot of sense when you first enter an arena to pop a message with side totals and to give you a choice of the (one or two) lowest-number sides, too many people would complain. They all want to fly for "their country" in teh l337 Orange arena and will stomp their feet, pout and threaten to quit the game forever if they can't get there.
-
This isn't asking anybody to change sides. The "change sides in the lobby" bit was just something I tossed in.
With my idea in place both LW arenas would stay roughly "balanced" and wait time to enter an arena would be very low, or non-existent. (as would ENY)
(edit: one thing to consider is Titanic Tuesday. On TT most all three sides are relatively "balanced". My suggestion does not make anybody fly a certain country, but only limits which arena you can fly in. (which we have right now) Unlike what we have now my suggestion would both balance the sides and prevent any players from being locked out of either LW arena for very long. It takes fewer players to drop a sides ENY under 15 than it does to move the Arena Cap as it currently is)

I'm w/ ya Lute! :aok
I just got reamed from this post not too long ago :D :x

Here are some of the responses I got...
here's a thought. don't like game play at the time.....log off and go fishing.
Your consistent screen shots of moments in time in regards to the "cap" are one of those things in life that in the total picture ... means crap ... along with the fact that it will not change HiTech's mind.
your angst over the "cap" is what is classless and indecent.
Either learn to live with it, or go play WoW.
So I guess your only recourse is to shut up and live with it, or take your money and go somewhere else.
IMHO you are wasting the community's time and space on a dead subject
We are mostly just sick and tired of hearing your frustration -- yet again.
Opening Blue on TT is counter-intuitive to having TT so that would be invalid. Go bowling on Tuesday, HTC already has your money so they don't care.
Good Luck :aok

I think if the ENY went off amount of people in flight, it would be a lot different.
-
It's also been suggested that those inactive for a certain amount of time go "POOF" too. :aok
-
I can careless if they get kicked out of the arena, just think they should base it off of people in flight.
-
I got ya. :aok I don't think I was stepping on your opinion.
I'm just adding another. Main point is cap and its unballancing effect.
Get rid of those inactive and you get a better balance of active players. :aok

I still swear this was tried when the arenas first split.
There was a que in the OC. You could:
A. Try another arena
B. Switch countries
C. Wait until an opening became available.
Apparently this is just all in my head.

Lute ... been there ... done that.
I still think this would be the best way to go ...
I will use numbers that are easiest for explanation and not the real numbers.
If ...
Orange and Blue have a cap of 100 and when an LW arena population reaches 50% of the cap, the other LW cap is increased by 50 seats.
So ...
Once Orange reaches 50 players, Blue cap is increased to 150 and Orange still has room of 50 more players before is reaches its cap.
Once the 100 cap is reached in Orange no more entry is allowed.
Now that Blue cap has been increased to 150, players will begin to fill up Blue. Once Blue reaches a population of 75 players, Orange cap will be raised to 150. At this point, people really have a choice of Orange or Blue because neither has reached their respective caps.
So at this instant we would see ...
LW1 - 50/150
LW2 - 75/150
==============================================
Now lets go back to the beginning and start again ...
Once Orange reaches 50 players, Blue cap is increased to 150 and Orange still has room of 50 more players.
Once the 100 cap is reached in Orange (current numbers in Orange are - 60 Rooks - 25 Knights - 15 Bish) and someone selects Orange while the cap has been realized, they are presented with another popup choice ...
Orange - Knights (until they reach a population of 60*)
Orange - Bish (until they reach a population of 60*)
Blue - Open for all at the moment
*60 is set by the highest single population at the point that the cap had been reached ... in this case, the Rooks had 60 when the cap was reached.
This way, someone who wants to play in Orange and is willing to join one of the weaker sides, is allowed entry. So ... If I choose Bish ... then the cap is now 101/101 ... so on and so forth until balance is achieved (R60-B60-K60 : Arena 180/180), and at that point, there is no more entry into Orange until Blue has reached its saturation point causing the cap in Orange to be increased.
So if Orange did reach 180/180 by people choosing the under populated countries and Blue eventually did reach it 50% saturation point, the new cap for Orange would be 180 + 50 = 230 so we would see ...
Orange - 180/230
Blue - 75/150
This allows entry into a "capped" arena ... as long as you choose one of the under-populated countries.
-
Lute ... been there ... done that.
No numbers cap with my idea but they are similar. This idea, or one very similar, HAS been suggested by several players over the years. I know I have put it out there in a few threads. I started this thread because I can't recall this exact idea being put forth in its own thread for consideration by HTC.
This really is a great idea. There is only Open or Closed and I like tying it to ENY as opposed to a hard # cap. ENY or Hard Cap is almost the same thing but by using ENY the arena opens up faster because it would be faster to drop one countries ENY than fill up a cap. It is BETTER than a cap because this idea balances out the sides which the current setup does not.
The arena would be open or closed based on the balance of players solely.
If all arenas are balanced then all are open.
The beauty of this idea is small numbers or large, the arenas would be balanced from the get-go. You not only eliminate ENY for the most part but both arenas are almost always Open and switching arenas becomes more viable.
There is hardly ever an imbalance in player numbers.
My only concern is in the wee hours when 75-150 players are flying and there IS an odd number of players.
My only solution there is for them to change countries or not fly that arena.
If you HAVE to fly an arena and it is out o' whack because of the small number of players in it you CAN still join it but only if you change sides.
I don't think this would impact many "regular" players that much because you would have the new pilots who really don't have any country loyalty changing countries and balancing out the sides.
Check out the roster in an arena that has a huge country # disparity. Many of the players on the high numbered side have no squad and many are quite new. I doubt they would care if they are Bish, Rook or Knit.
Then you have players like myself that have no problem changing countries to balance out the sides.
The hard core "I have to fly X country" players would still get to fly their country of choice. The players w/o country loyalty would balance things out.
During most the rest of the day you would be able to pick/choose your arena and changing sides wouldn't even come up. (unless you wanted to that is) Most of the day the numbers in both LW arenas combined are fairly balanced.
I really think this would work and should be tried.
-
I think if the ENY went off amount of people in flight, it would be a lot different.
Yes, you would still be outnumbered but fighting against LA7s and Spit 16s.
Fun, yes?
:huh
As near as I can tell, all the "ENY whine" threads are based on "I can't fly my UB3R pL4|\|3".
My question to the OP and others of the type: Ever been on the side with the low numbers? 100/65/92?
How do you feel about ENY then?

The tread isn't at all about ENY or plane picks.
It is about balancing the sides. A side effect of this idea would be that ENY over a certain point would never happen, but that is not at all the "point" of it.
The Point would be making both LW arenas balanced and allowing the players to fly in either arena.
But to answer your question I was both in the Hoard last night (Blue) and getting hoarded (Orange) and neither was very enjoyable, hence this post. In either arena I died very little and killed many. What I fly doesn't really change that.
ENY doesn't really change the opponents or their playing style. No PonyD? up a B. Can't take a La7? Jump in a La5. No spit 16? Grab a 9. I see very little diff. between a hoard of Spit16's and a hoard of Spit 9's.
The point isn't ENY or plane restrictions but rather fighting a huge hoard or being in the huge hoard. Both of which suck.
I wouldn't think most players would have "issue" with the sides being fairly "even" in the arenas. One would think that would be a desirable thing.

I like uneven distribution. Fighting the horde can be fun :)
And people being able to enter arena by switching to outnumbered side has already been tried, 3 years ago.

As far as I can see your idea does nothing to promote balancing numbers between arenas.

BORING
Just as bad flying round in an el cheapo 262 or Tempest knowing you are next to untouchable.
Most of what has been mentioned -
Boot time for inactive players etc were requested a long, long, long time ago.
As for the original idea - Considering that the main reason things seem to get out of whack is squad (1st) then country loyalty, effectively forcibly splitting squads to 'try' to balance numbers will go down like the proverbial lead balloon.
Then again crazy/widly fluctuating ENY and arena hopping (only makes it worse) were predicted when the arenas split.
Interested to hear on TT that the sides are relatively balanced (not made one yet), should give you a clue to the fix.....shouldn't it?
-
By having the two servers talk and applying the caps indivdually to each country, you can balance both arenas and individual countries.
Exceptions to the cap should be made for squad members who are already flying in the cap'd arena or people who recently disco'd
As far as I can see your idea does nothing to promote balancing numbers between arenas.

Exceptions to the cap should be made for squad members
Great. Most players in Aces High are in a squad. And those in huge 32 player squads will basically be excempt from CAP, while very small small squads or freelancers like me are getting the full brunt of it?
-
It would definitely eliminate the need to break the windows out of a goon and have your troops throw spears and tiolet paper when 50 ENY kicks in........ :O
-
Was one idea floated way back -
a) Move the country change option to the arena choice screen.
b) Allow players to join a capped arena but ONLY if on the lowest side.
This would be in conjuction with arena caps, i.e it only comes into effect when the arena is capped.
How many people would use the option? Anyones guess.
Moving the country change option prevents hopping once in the arena. To hop they would have to leave the arena.
Adv -
Doesnt penalise people anymore than the current setup
Gives people another option to join a capped arena on the lowest side therefore closing the gap.
[edit] Ignore, wouldn't work.
-
From what I can tell from reading posts by HT, the caps are to try to balance numbers between arenas, not within arenas. ENY is to try to balance numbers within an arena which gives players the option to switch sides if they can't take up their l337 plainz.
And from what I've read of your posts, you seem to be complaining because your squad is too big and can't all be in the l337 arena because of the caps and/or having to fly "crap" planes.
-
Eny and fighting on the low number side is getting 5 ki61's vs my p51. In the end you land a smoking , hole filled, parts missing plane but oh what a ride it was! Arena caps suck but eny is there for a reason. You may be facing greater numbers but the equipment used isn't great. I wish eny was actually worse than what it is now. I think arena caps should be even on both Orange and blue. Keep them linked but keep the cap numbers the same between the two. Won't be long til blue arena squadrons form since it's actually more fun in there lately.
-
As far as I can see your idea does nothing to promote balancing numbers between arenas.
HiTech
I see what you are saying there HiTech.
What I have seen is that many players/squads have a preference of which arena they like to fly in. I tend to gravitate to Blue and I usually see many of the same faces in there. Just like many players would rather fly in Orange and you tend to see the same players in that arena.
Players will still get to pick whichever arena they want to join as long as the numbers are balanced in that arena. All of the "core" players/squads of a certain arena will still get to fly there. The new (and some vets) players w/o squad or arena loyalty that can care less which arena they fly in would be filling up the slots. They would get filtered to the proper arena and help to balance out the sides.
If a player wants to wait for an arena to open up (due to imbalance) it won't be as long of a wait as what we have now.
If we have the following in Orange with Rooks getting ENY and the arena not letting Rooks join...
Rooks: 120
Knit: 95
Bish:90
How many players does it take to drop Rook Eny down to open the arena back up for Rooks? (bearing in mind ONLY Knit and Bish are allowed to join the arena) 10? 15 players tops?
How many players does it take to join an arena to shift the Caps now? 25? 50? 75 players?
The end result would be balanced arenas and players still being allowed to fly in their arena of choice with a shorter wait time.
I do think we would end up with one Arena being the larger of the two, but the more I think about it, the more I like that idea. 400 players in a balanced Orange and 250 in a balanced Blue would be great! Players could pick either arena to fly in and both would develop their own "flavor".
It is similar to what we have right now except no one country would have a HUGE numbers imbalance.
I don't see the downside here.
-
WMLute, I have just thought about your idea. The result would be very simple.
Basically All people would be in one arena. All other people would be waiting for a player from a different country to join so they could get in to the 1 arena.

This is pretty much what happens anyway, either they log in and sit in arena or lobby and wait, or the join and exit until they can get in to the arena. (usually orange)

Maybe. Then again maybe not. I know if I had the choice between an arena with 400 players and one with 200 I lean towards the smaller. I also know many other players feel the same.
I also think that both arenas have taken on their own identity to a degree and you will have player loyalty to that arena.
I honestly think that after a time you will end up with both arenas well populated.
A squaddie suggested tonight that maybe we keep SOME form of arena cap present. Just not to the degree we have it now. That in and of itself would keep all the players from just one arena.
I might suggest this Tue. you open up two LW arenas. See if everybody goes into Orange(TT) or if some do indeed fly Blue. I am betting Orange(TT) will get close to maxed out but Blue will also have a decent amount of players in it. Lord knows I HATE TT as does most in my squad and if given the option of TT with 550in it or another LW with 150 we'd fly the 150 in a heart beat.
That might give you a general idea, but until you add the side balancing that forces players into the "other" arena we really can't use that as much of a guide.
The $50,000 question that made me start this thread is how best to populate both arenas, and at the same time keep the countries balanced.
Two LW arenas with each one having a huge hoard on one country is getting out of hand. There HAS to be a way to balance out the players.
You tried ENY to force players to change sides (at least one of the reasons). It didn't/doesn't work (very well anyway)
You originally did the arena split because the arenas were "unhealthy". I would suggest they are again unhealthy.
Tonight in Blue the knits had 15-25 ENY because there were hardly any Rooks on.
They were all in Orange where they also had a 15+ ENY and were rolling the map.
This has become the "norm" in prime time.
What we now have are two arenas that are constantly out of whack with one country having a huge # advantage.
Maybe my suggestion won't "work" (I think it might) but I really feel that something needs to be put in place to balance the players.
-
Basically it comes down to, only WE can change things by switching sides or flying in a different arena and WE would rather merely complain instead.
Only YOU can prevent ENY.

Explain how i can get into the arena and "change" the numbers for the low side when caps keep me out.
Sure I could go into the arena that is unbalanced and help it. How can I go into the capped arena that is unbalanced and help it?
EDIT: You can't.

Why do people keep bringing this back to ENY?
This has nothing to do with ENY.
It has EVERYTHING to do with a way to balance the arenas.
It has become obvious that players will not balance themselves. The ole' honor system just ain't gonna cut it. With so many players trying to "win da' warz" you are getting stronger and stronger country loyalty. For every one guy that will change sides to even things up there are 50 who doesn't care how imbalanced the arena gets as long as they Win da' War!
So lets be honest here. The players are not going to do it on their own. This has become painfully obvious. The ONLY way to get a balanced arena is to Coad it into the game.
The "trick" is figuring out a fair, easy, and balanced way to achieve this goal.
We have some brilliant minds flying this game. I am positive a solution is out there.
I even have a login screen for my idea.
The buttons under the country name is what you click to login to the arena. (the OPEN and CLOSED)
Allow the players to change countries right at the login screen.

I would not like the idea, reason being I only like to fly when my squadmates are online. and I would not want to fly without them, while they are on the over team

Sorry for bringing it back to ENY, Lute, but I wanted to address this:
I understand I am clearly in the minority, but I spent a decent amount of time on the side with the lowest numbers before the arena split and ENY restrictions were put into place. Further, back in the other game, I remember there being a time where my country was down to three bases for several weeks.
I liked it. I didn't mind flying against Lalas, because 60+ perk point sorties weren't out of the question, and those kind of perks bought many cheap tempests and 262s. I would have much rather had new late war monsters like the P-47M and company than to have my opponent's ride choice restricted by anything but massive perk costs.
I also enjoyed the chaos (especially in that other game) of trying to up from a field unnoticed, grab alt, and then come back against the horde. For me, it was fun. I'd read JG26 by day, and play it by night. Good times.
But since I realize I am in the minority, I would like to add that I don't see why being forced to turn by a P-51B so that a gaggle of Spit V's can chew me up is really that much better than being forced to turn by a P-51D so a gaggle of Spit XVI's can chew me up. I think an ENY system based solely on speed makes more sense (balance wise, if not perk-earning wise) than the "well, this is a pretty good plane" system that we have today. I would suggest having "perk" and "balance" systems be independent.
---------
As for Lute's idea... To be honest, I'm not sure how much fun perpetually balanced arenas would be, no matter how they are achieved. You have to have a bit of everything to keep the game fresh, IMO.
-
I would not like the idea, reason being I only like to fly when my squadmates are online. and I would not want to fly without them, while they are on the over team
How is it diff. from now when they are in an arean that is capped?
With my idea it would be easier to fly with them as it takes far less players to adjust ENY than it does to move a cap.
Vudak, the arenas wouldn't be perfectly balanced. There is quite a large # swing to get 15 ENY.

Sorry Lute, missed that.
<-- I'm still the crazy one who wants to be outnumbered by Lalas ;)
-
OK given that -
a) The majority of players want to fly with their squaddies.
b) The majority of players are loyal to a country.
Then
c) Any way to populate the arenas where players have a choice where to go is doomed to failure.
The ONLY way would be as players login they are assigned to an arena / country, and hopefully this will never happen.
It would probably be the proverbial straw that breaks the camels back as it is 180 degrees against both a) and b).
So is there any other solution? I don't think so.
Any other 'fix' is skirting around the actual 'fix', and is likely to create as many problems as it 'fixes'.
-
I think if the cap system (dynamic cap system) stayed the same, but added Lute's "openings" it would help to balance the numbers in the individual arena.
With the dynamic cap using the numbers of the higher numbered team as the balancing numbers instead of the over all arena numbers between LW arenas. If the bish had the numbers in orange, the cap would only open spaces in knits and rooks, or until blues population of bish increased to open more room in orange. This way the rooks and knits could join to even sides, but not everyone will be in one arena. The only issue I see would be people login in on the low number side, and switching to the high number side. To stop that, they could make "switching sides" only available in the lobby with Lutes "open", "close" buttons are.

Similar to something proposed many moons ago.
Wouldn't work in conjuction with caps.
If players logged into the arena with the most numbers and joined the lowest teams you then effectively get to point where the overall numbers in that arena are so much higher than the other that you lock totally it for a long time.
If you remove caps and people join in the right sequence you could end up with one massive arena and a sparsely populated arena.
If one arena gets locked totally from people joining because its numbers are so much higher than the other, then players logging into the lower number arena are basically given the choice of only two countries.
Result - a lot of unhappy campers.
You may also get the situation where squads are chasing members around different arenas and countrys to try and meet up.
Can be frustrating at the moment, would imagine could be extremely irritating under something like that.

Not if the arena cap work with the country numbers across both arenas, not over all numbers. Say Bish has the big numbers in orange. Rooks and Knits are the only one to increase, but set a percentage, say Rooks close to with in 5% of Bish total in numbers, Rooks now get locked out, same with knits. Sure total cap went up , but its still locked to the other arena due to the numbers not climbing there. Now Orange is locked out completely until the cap in Blue comes up again. What the numbers or percentages are, well thats for the big brains to figure out :D
I think giving the population a chance to enter a loop sided arena, but with restrictions is a good thing. Keeping the percentages tight would insure no run away numbers with one arena be heavily populated compared to the other.

Who hacked into Fugitive's computer and posted this stuff? ;)

I even have a login screen for my idea.
The buttons under the country name is what you click to login to the arena. (the OPEN and CLOSED)

And in this situation, 3 out of 4 "knight loyal" players would simply not join either arena, and come here and whine about it. They can't get into the arena in which they dominate, and don't want to go to an arena where they know up front they are going to be horded for the next hour.
A noble thought, but I just don't think it will have the desired effect. In fact, it may actually cause the imbalances as those coming on will start to gravitate to whichever arena their side already has the most (but not yet ENY-restricted) numbers.

:uhoh The OP said that we have a choice of being the horde or get horded. In his example he clearly stated, "Both arena choices were unacceptable if I want to fly as a Knight."
I think balancing it out is the objective of the post. Not whine.

Again, the point is to stop those that "gravitate" :aok

This should be your first hint.
(edit: one thing to consider is Titanic Tuesday. On TT most all three sides are relatively "balanced".
This should be your second hint.
are getting stronger and stronger country loyalty

I think this solution is far better then the system we currently have in place.
There is one problem thought. What if a die hard rook supporter is locked out of both arenas, because rooks have superior numbers in both?

Allow the players to change countries right at the login screen.
Actually, I like this---
However, I would add as a suggestion that you can only join the capped arena if you join the team with the absolute lowest numbers. Or, maybe even you can only join the lowest number team if they are outnumbered by a certain amount (perhaps, enough to force the highest number team to have ENY). Just to keep arena caps effective.
The problem of course would be if one team has the highest numbers in both arenas.
