Title: What's a good Driving/Racing game??
Post by: Latrobe on August 23, 2009, 05:53:59 PM
I've been looking around for a good driving/racing game for the PC, and can't seem to find what I'm looking for. What is a good drving/racing game that I could buy? I would like to have a free roam ability, and pretty decent car physics, a "street racer" type of feel to it, and pretty decent graphics. So far GRID has looked pretty promising, but I would like to know if there are any other good ones out there that I may have missed.

Rfactor is a good one.  http://rfactor.net  There are endless free mods to download with their own tracks and cars.  http://rfactorcentral.com

The free roam street racing thing may be hard to find in something with good physics.

Live for speed.  There's a tire physics update coming up that should be really good.

You still can't beat Nascar 2003 by Papyrus...if you can find a copy. There are NUMEROUS mods not just for NASCAR types but road racing and several others.

I'd beware of rfactor.  The amount of mods is inversely proportional to the average quality.  And it's nowhere near as easy to find races in it as in LFS.

Live for Speed looks pretty good. Is there multiplayer on it? (I suspect yes?), and can you customize your own car?

The old EA F1 games and the GTA mods/retail games remain the best, IMO.

Havent tried LFS in years but, when I played it (early on, admittedly), it couldnt hold a candle to either of the above.

Multiplayer is what LFS is about. You can't customize cars like NFS, it's a sim.  Sim and multiplayer gameplay first, everything else second. There's a custom car editor available, but it's kinda buggy (no support from the devs, same as AH) and the next one that's supposed to be well polished is due out but with no due date.. Probably sometime after the next coming patch is out.  There is a NASCAR mod that is worth checking out though.
I suggest you sign up for a few leagues.. I haven't been in one or even played LFS for a long time now, so I can't recommend which ones.  But they're great fun.  Guaranteed fun when you find the right ones.
And gameplay on demo servers isn't representative of licensed ones.

Mazz - You mean GTR?  LFS is way ahead of F1 nowadays.  iRacing and it are the best.  Only LFS is cheap and easy to play, whereas iRacing is expensive and pretty anal.  The small edge that iRacing has over LFS in physics may be negligible after the upcoming patch is out.

Forza Motorsport 2 on the Xbox is excelent. You will enjoy it for offline aswell with things like body kit design and fully customisable paint schemes. It is basically Gran Tourismo with many imporvements (thought slightly less cars)

I dont know if they released it for the PC.  :(

That was a pretty good setup. I did some of the early beta testing on that game and kept a car in the system for a while. It sucked to see that game go away.

I was in beta as well and for a few months once it went live. I stopped when they brought modern cars into it, took the whole feel of the game away.

A bunch of friends and I started playing GPL again, still my favorite racing sim. It's over shadowed by newer sims with better tire models and such but I love that era of F1 racing and there is nothing like it out there to switch to.

Well .. just so yas know .. Iracing is the Papyrus NASCAR crew .. they are all about fidelity and simulation.

Dave has taken the next step and then some from what I hear.
Dale Jr. and a bunch of others run it and provide input with car design and setup.

(they are the guys who did GPL.. the actual people who coded an such)

Alot of good choices to pick from! I love Sim games (no, not The Sims Game :P ), but is there even a free roam option in these games? The only thing I liked about Burnout Paradise was being able to just drive around with friends while playing my music. These games kind of look more like a "join a server and start a race".

Mazz - LFS has a 911.  It's 100kg heavier and only puts out 360hp/288 lbft to what look like maybe 280-300 rear tires, but it's already pretty fun.
They don't have any official licenses, but the mechanics are there, under the bodywork.  There's a car modifier app that you could use to edit this 911 into a GT2.  You ought to give it a try.  You can literally feel the suspension and tires working.

Latrobe - No free roam possible with the LFS engine.  I think there was a Test Drive game recently, that ought to have that.  You can try some of the "cruise" servers in LFS, but no guarantee they'll be free enough.  You can start your own server or rent one and set it up for that, though.  Password-protected and everything, so that only your friends could join and drive around.  But the single-path restriction will prolly kill it for you, I reckon.

Are you talking about the Masta Kink, I do a 10% lift in a Lotus then throttle pinned again about a heartbeat later.
Spa is by far my favorite track it has my three favorite turns/complexes in it, En Rouge, Malmady, and Masta.

It's still pretty impressive. It have many year 1967 F1-cars, but I just love that Ferrari V12 sound.

heh - I clearly remember rolling my virtual Ferrari out of the Monza pit, start racing down the track, and listening to an ever increasing scream from the engine. I think that is the only time a computer game sound gave me the chills and a big smile on my face

That back stretch in Solitude.. with the uphill twisties before it.. All thru the country side scenery, racing at out-of-control speeds with a half dozen friends, that was nirvana.  Even for someone like me who never liked the stone feel of the tires.
Zandvoort was my fav... You could be sideways thru almost the whole track.

Thats a render from the West brother's Racing Legends.. Never came out as far as I remember.  Shame really, cause they were building it to have pretty much everything modeled.  Down to the nuts & bolts.  You could open up the car and look at the insides in detail, in real time.  Each car would have its serial number, etc.
Title: Re: What's a good Driving/Racing game??
Post by: lengro on August 26, 2009, 04:36:01 PM
yeah - we waited and waited for the West Brothers Racing Legends... vapourware.
lol - their site is still up : http://www.racing-legends.com/ (http://www.racing-legends.com/)

Never tried online racing with GPL - and the AI could be very stupid. The challenge for me was - to begin with - to survive one lap at the Nordschleife  :), and later on to try and improve my lap time. I hated the low grip tires, but loved the challenge.

Post by: moot on August 26, 2009, 04:44:52 PM
I didn't like the grip either. Never made sense intuitively. No real feedback..  But Zandvoort made it all ok.  It was just intoxicatingly good.  Sliding thru the raceline right from T1.   The real killer for me wasn't the Nurb - just need to be patient - but Kyalami.  That thing was just a hazard all around.   Spa was awesome, but I never trusted the tires enough to enjoy it for all it was worth.  Was always pretty disappointing for that reason.

andyes Wooley I know. There's been more than afew racers who have died in aircraft related incidents. I know awhile back Davey Alison,

Yeah Zandvoort was a blast to drive, reminded me of downhill skiing. Fling the car left sideways, then right. So much fun! Kyalami wasn't too bad, the ring killed me I never really got used to that track to be really good at it. I just didn't have the time to really learn it.

What I truly liked about GPL defects and all was how fast it felt (felt like driving a race car), no other game/sim ever did that for me but GPL.

I miss Motor City Online also.

I worked with the team that did the original MCOMOD for EAs F1 series.  I did the physics, Mike Chino did the models, Conductor did the engines.
That was a fun project.  Stuck with it through the flat out mod, then left.

Yet another fine product killed by EA  :furious

Iracing intrigues me due to Dave Kaemmer's magic.

The Legends cars (the '40's retro jalopy lookin affairs) looks like they would be just a blast to run around in,
..both for real and in this sim. I would love to be able to run 'em :)

GPL had me from the first time I strapped into an Eagle.
It felt 'right' ..those old bias ply nylon tires behind a few hundred horsepower duplicated exactly what it felt like to drive some of the muscle cars I grew up on.
I took a '68 427 tri-power vette out for a test drive from a used car lot (in 1973, they wanted 900 bucks for it) ..
You could fry those stock tires on the Vette bangin into any gear at any decent rpm.
.. the Eagle in game actually cornered substantially better but it was all about throttle control all the time :)

I'm sort of a WRC/Rallying affectionado..
Having said that, there's a few PC Rally sims/games that I play....
While being a tad dated(came out in 04), Colin Mcrae 2005 is probably my favorite..
I really enjoy most of the entire Colin Mcrae PC series..  I have played DiRT and DiRT2(both part of the series) and
am not exactly impressed with either..  The physics seem off..  Maybe they're more realistic??  Not sure..
I'm also playing Xpand Rally Extreme which has excellent graphics but is a lot more difficult than Colin Mcrae 2005..
I use an analog/digital pad similar to what the PS2/PS3 uses..  I may find my nuts in a glass of ice water next time
when I wake up in the morning if she saw a wheel and pedals sitting there... :noid
