Title: Diplomacy
Post by: Sandman on September 21, 2009, 11:11:30 PM
Years ago, a few of us here occasionally played Diplomacy via email using one of the judges.

The last couple of days, I've been thinking I'd like to play again and checked the Diplomatic Pouch (http://www.diplom.org/index.py) to see what kind of advances have been made with software. Lots of software available, but it's still email driven. Was really hoping for something a bit more user-friendly.

So... back to Google and I discovered PlayDiplomacy.com (http://www.playdiplomacy.com/).

This looks promising!

Anyone interested in a game? Be warned... it could last months.

I remember that and I was also thinking about it recently!

I am interested in playing, either way looks good. The old way or the new link you provided!

I really enjoyed the 1861 World Game. I didn't last very long but I had a fun time with everyone from the Oclub. That would be another fun game!

Holy cow, that looks challenging. Does everyone agree to a certain game set or just play them all?

That could take weeks just for one set of moves to go through especially if there are slackers involved.

I thought it was one move every week? I could be wrong maybe every couple days. If you don't set up moves in time, you basically lose your turn.

Typically, a turn takes three days but that can be set to anything. Then the adjustments and whatnot... You're looking at a week or so each move.

Oooh, I want to.  Good memories of those games.  Unfortunately, I'm about to take 3 weeks with limited internet access... maybe the next one.

There is no Japan in the standard game. England, France, Austria, Germany, Russia, Italy, and Turkey.

slightly related question:  Is there an online version of risk like this?

I haven't been able to find a free one. Thinking nobody owns the rights to Diplomacy any more, so this is possible. Just speculation.

I may have found someone, one of my friends, who is interested in playing.

I noticed the game was canceled because of the lack of players, it seems we only needed one more. Any chance of starting a new one?

Yep. Though I don't mind so much, personally... :D (kidding, of course)

With the amount of confusion caused by these random downtimes (this is the third I've counted) and apparently needing a deeper explanation of how moves are applied in what order, I must admit I'm not enjoying it as much as I thought, even regardless of getting whooped.

The game has been down for days... it must be feeling sorry for the Russian and the Turk, knowing that the tables have turned.

Open a can on the Turk???  In the words of Lee Corso, not so fast my friend.  Italy was headed for the same fate as Austria, and Nef my little German friend, I think you were probably next in line.

While the good Doc over here was worried about little Turkey, England's managed to come sliding in through the back door on him.

I do wonder what's up with the game though, I hope they get it fixed very soon.

While it drags out like crazy,it has been fun.  I saw somewhere on nthe server forums that it had dealt with some maleware. Might have to did a little deeper there and see if we can find some answers.

Note the words "was" and "were". Perhaps had the original Austrian/Turk/German Alliance held, this discussion would be quite different.

I'm kind of surprised that it ended with Turkeys surrender. Even though England and I worked out a truce, I thought the game would of continued with two players.
