Finally got some good pictures of my families dragster so I wanted to show it off....
I miss the actual driving that a door car needs but the rail is great at bracket racing. Best 1/8 Mile to date is 5.42 @ 127.00 mph and its older than some of the squeakers on here.
:D
1996 Carpenter Hardtail (215" Mild Steel) with a 406" Small Block Chevy and Powerglide. If anyone races in Florida or South Georgia we could meet up sometime. In case you didn't know I love to talk drag racing and racing in general.
:x
Lets see em guys and gals....

ok, here's mine again.
68 camaro. it's almost all fiberglass. running a 540 chevy, with a turbo 400 tranny, dana 88 rear with 4.86 gears. has a transbrake, and a biondo racing delay box. that's all the electronics in it.
it was built in the early 70's by danny smith in camden nj. weighs 2600 and change with me in it. ran 9.9's with the old 454, and hoping for 8.9's or 9.0's with this engine.
my street car, but not done yet.
it has a fi 5.0L 5 speed, 8.8 rear with 3.73's, and motorsport frame connectors.
the engine has gt40 everything, 30# injectors, 70mm mass air meter, and throttle body, and i'm installing cold air under the bumper.
she's gonna be a lot slower than my camaro, but sooooo much more fun when the kids in their ricers can't figure out what the hell just hammered em. :devil

If you ever get in a rut with the 1320, try getting into a couple driver's ed events at road courses. Pocono isnt that far from you and they have two seperate infield tracks that use portions of the tri-oval.
If you love watching the ricers make excuses for losing to "old" American cars, you should see their faces when thier Hollywood-inspired FWD economy cars understeer into the grass.
Either way, its a hell of a lot of fun. Think about that feeling you get running down the length at ATCO and multiply it by 15-20 minutes at a time. ;)
-
Nice Cap. Can you say sleeper?

i've been thinking about that. i have 2 friends that take their vipers up there when their club rents it, and a customer that takes his old 911 up there.
if i could make that fairmont go through turns well, i think it'd be a frakkin BLAASt taking that BUF through there. :aok

i'm actually going to build an entire new instrument cluster for it. going to set up the guages like they were in 67-68 mustangs. then try to make it look factory. it should be pretty easy....and it will get rid of that "high school" looking tach. :aok :rofl :D

Take it to Watkins Glen and they will embarrass you for sure.

nope.
if they even have to break a sweat(and they will) to take on a fairmont, there's nothing for me to be embarrassed about. :devil

My point was ... introduce some corners and all you will see is the tail lights of the Porche.

The broken light on the left rear corner is a nice touch for "sleeper mode." :lol

consider that those guys are just average joes like me and you.
also consider that the fox bodied fords handle MUCH better than anyone realizes.
also consider, that the fairmont IS one of those fox bodied fords. mine is far from stock too. :devil

the only reason i put them on, was because i didn't have any other wheels that'd fit those tires. i spent some time trying to find some plain un-marked centercaps for those wheels, but came up empty.

LOL ... yeah AMCs were just that.
When I was in High School I always went to the Trans Am races at Limerock and watched Mark Donahue muscle his AMX Javelin around that track and spank the Camaros and Mustangs tho.

A good friend of mine had a very un-assuming Gremlin ... with the V8 option ... talk about a sleeper.
Another buddy had one of these ...

the few amc's i ever got to work on, way bqack when, seemed like they were "thrown together" using a mix of parts. some had ford or gm distributors, most had gm starters, a lot had autolite or motorcraft carbs.......
remember the gremlin x?
there's someone driving one around here, although i haven't seen it in a couple months.

Any reason why? We've had power strokes around here for a while (a live in a rural town...everyone has a diesel....but mainly farmers) and we haven't had any problems.
Also, I don't think there are many stock parts left in that engine :lol

i was kinda curious about that too. i don't thinnk ford built a 6.0 deisel. it was a 6.9, and dependable. a torque monster.
the 7.3L powerstroke turbodeisel, has no mechanical problems, although they tend to have some electronics problems here and there.
i've been towing on and off for about 15 years. the guy i tow for has fords, and they have powerstrokes in em....never had a problem.
-
Yall makin me miss my Firebird Formula 455. Heluva stock machine. I should have never sold it. :frown:

The 6.0L was the Diesel in 2003-2006 250's and 350's.

Yeah that thing is a tank. I serviced one while ago and valve cover gasket wiring was melted(brilliant design). Apparently he didn't change glow plugs soon enough or something,i don't know much about diesels.

neither do i, but they are fairly simple. till ford threw electronics and a turbo on em, the 7.3's could be figured out easily. only glow plugs, or glow plug relays used to go bad.,
with the powerstroke.....the valve cover wiring is very common, as is the injector driver module.
-
Ford doesn't build the diesels they put in their domestic trucks Navistar does. The 6.9/7.3 mechanical injected engines were decent units just under powered. The 7.3 Powerstroke is electronically controlled and not the same engine as the earlier 6.9/7.3's. It too was a decent engine that makes good power just expensive to work on. The 6.0 has been a problem child for Ford since it's introduction. and one of the reasons it has only lasted a few years. Don't get me wrong they are powerful and can move an 8,000lb truck down the road. When they run. Like the earlier 7.3 powerstroke they are expensive to work on.

true.....
i'm going to look at a rollback tomorrow night. it's got the non-turbo 7.3 and a 5 speed. it should do well for me.

While that may be possible, I assure you that the cars in which I have seat time are far more capable than I am. I am consistantly reminded of this when I go out with an instructer in his/her car. :lol

most people aren't really capable of pushing their honda civics to their limits, much less a mustang, camaro, corvette, etc.........

Had an instructor take me around Lime Rock in his GT3 Cup Car ... never been so elated and scared to death at the same time.

NOT even close. i clean it out once a year.....and right now, it's a little neater than in that pic, as i have archery targets set up on the back wall. from my driveway to the back wall is 20 yards...if i cross the street, i can get out to 40 yards. it's good practice, and the back wall makes a very nice backstop if i should miss....which i rarely do inside of 40 yards. :devil

87, 88 - same, same. The G50 is a massive improvement over the 915. That said, mine was a street car. Basic upgrades... turbo torsion bars, 7's and 8's, etc, etc. I miss that car. The steering feedback was unreal. You always knew exactly what the front end was doing. Half of that was due to the lack of power steering, though.
My first guy took me out in his, at the time, brand-spanking-new 01 996TT and I can equate the sensation to a roller coaster. I thought the acceleration was mental until I felt him under brakes and thought the front of my face was going to peel off.

take it in to your shop, and have the thermostat, timing belt, and water pump(driven by the timing belt) checked if you don't know when they were done.
they very commonly go bad at around 40-50k miles.'

well .. we can start with the 'old days' .. ie: 1973 or so, runnin the valves on a Friday nite before hittin Central Avenue.
427 L-88, LS6 heads -ported, polished, shaved, thin copper head gaskets, 13 or so to one Compression ..ran on 110 octane Daeco, buck fifty a gallon and people useda think I was nuts payin that much then .. ROFL.
She was *fast* tho.. seemed like it took more time to shift than to actually run thru any gear,
..and I was very fast at it, then. People useda ask me if I was runnin an automatic.
Ya .. blue tinted windows . . red lights in the wheel wells . . cadillac mufflers or cherry bombs, depending on my mood.
I even bolted a wing on the trunk. People thought it was just some beater .. till I turned it loose in first gear.

The old 'Tom and Jerry' top fuel car, with a 327 and powerglide in it.
Speed shop I worked for, Don Graham the owner bought it..
Ran 9.20's as B/econo .. then we bracket raced it.
Made the bracket finals a coupla years .. was awesome, consistent car.
Then I got my 440 Duster up an runnin .. what a blast to drive :)
15+ years of bracket racing, cruisin, raisin hell, and yes .. even street racin.
I didnt lose often.

I still miss the Vette ..
Z-51, gears, nice exhaust, stickier tires than they come with, just a blast to drive
.. 13's in the quarter, 30mpg at 70, handled like a slot car ..amazing car.

I never got any pictures of my 67 Hemi GTX .. was 19 then, dint own a camera, everytime I got back in town from workin Survey crew I'd wash it, wax it, get ready for friday-saturday nite Central Avenue.
I paid 2700 for it, it had 20k miles on it, right off Sunland Mercury's lot out in Glendale.
She was cragar S/S's, copper metallic with matching interior, firestone cheaters on the back, 4 gear .. first car I tunnel rammed .. learned how to keep her tuned from a friend who ran a hemi slingshot dragster out at Beeline Dragway ..1969 was the summer ..a good summer.
You could hear that car from 3 blocks away thru the stock exhaust ..it was music.
Got 4mpg cruisin.. and when you punched it you could see the gas gauge go down.
I spent 10 bucks a nite in gas, and it was 25 cents a gallon then.
It ruined me for life .. I got so hooked on the whole car thing :)

i miss the days when you could drive somethign like that on the street, light enough traffic to enjoy it, and the police admired it, rather than targeted ya in it and harrass ya for it, like they generally do now.

Driver attitudes have changed.
ya, they have....and i realize that's part of the police officers change in attitudes.......but they can see who's driving.
i'm an almost old fart. they could see that when i was driving my mustang.....yet they'd follow me, and on occasion pull me over, just "because". i wasn't doing anything wrong. speed limit, not weaving traffic, etc. it was just a loud crazy fast car.

Here is my old car. 1998 TransAm. Nifty little car, grossly underrated HP numbers from GM. They said 305hp, but guys were getting 295 at the wheels bone stock so the real numbers were somewhere around 350hp at the crank. Open up the intake and exhaust and you'd get another real 20-30hp at the wheels. Some of the early ones got the vette cam (they're called "freaks") and some other vette parts, because of problems with the supply chain producing the de-rated parts. Those cars were delivered with somewhere around 30 extra hp and responded even better to simple intake and exhaust mods.
The fastest I ever had it was 150 and it was still pulling, but I ran out of excuses to keep going since the mustang GT I was racing had given up at 135. He dropped it into 3rd at around 80mph and I could hear the clang inside my car :) I was lazy and just left it in 5th gear... that's an overdrive gear... while he rowed through the gears. That meant he thought he had a chance as we were dead-even until about 110 when my rpms finally started getting into the torque band, and then I just walked away from him. At 135 I finally got some power down and just took off, so he lifted. I was accelerating so good though I kept my foot in it to 150 before lifting.
Like GE's vette, it gets 30 mpg on the freeway, except I have to keep it around 65 to get that 30 mpg because of the crappy gas additives they use now. Back in 1998, I got up to 34 mpg at 65.

Unfortunately it's time to sell it. I love the car and there isn't really anything wrong with it, but I can't fit 2 child seats and 2 adults in it at the same time, so it has to go. Damn. It still beats pretty much any stock mustang in autox, and I never even modded the car beyond putting in koni single-adjustable race shocks. A front swaybar would have made it a bit easier to drive especially in slaloms during autox, but at the expense of a little bit of sustained turning grip, so I never got around to doing it.
I've "replaced" it with a Pontiac G8 GT, also red. No cool pictures of that one yet though.

Recently I was driving my Mustang coming home from a date at 2am. Pass a cop going the other way and he pulls a 180 to follow me..I wasn't doing anything wrong so I wasn't worried. By the time he caught up I was going 45 in a 45 and he gets so close to my rear bumper I can't see his headlights. So when it turned to 55 I bumped my speed up to 60, thought maybe that would back him off....nope still riding my rear. About a mile ,total of about 2.5 miles, of that i just put on my turn signal got on the brakes hoping he would just pass me. Pulled off the side of the road and stopped and he stopped in the road. He then turned on the cherries and pulled in behind me. So he walked up behind my car and I rolled down the window. Conversation went something like this:
Cop: Something wrong?
Me: Nope just wanted to know why your riding my ass
Cop: Well I couldn't read your licence plate because the cover was causing a glare
Me: Well is it illegal to have a cover?
Cop: nope..but they do make it hard to read the plate
Me: OK so instead of following me so close why not just pull me over?
Cop: We have the right to follow people
Me: OK so why indanger our safety by following so close at highway speeds?
Cop: can I see your information?
Me: sure <hands licence and regrastration>
-he never goes back to his car and hands my papers back to me-
Cop: Just wanted to make sure everything was in order
Me: Are you sure that the red mustang had nothing to do with it
Cop: <laughs> um...No
He then follows me for about 5 miles staying about 1/2 miles back. At the county line he stops and I can still see his headlights when I turn off the highway towards my town. I know the police chef in that town and thought about saying something to him.

Good cops and bad cops. Examples of each below - both occuring in... 2004, would have to be, because I had the black M3.
When the car was first delivered, I was so giddy I just ran off to the Fast Tags joint to get it registered, etc, etc (thats a Pennsylvania thing for those unfamiliar - you didnt actually have to go to the DMV).
It was no more than a 4-5 mile drive and, of course, I get pulled over.
Pull into a KMart parking lot (hate people who clog up the road...) and he gets out and the discussion goes like this:
LEO: Hi there (grinning) how are you today, sir?
Me: Fine, thanks. How about yourself, officer?
LEO: Good, good, thanks. Say, did you just pick this one up?
Me: Yup. (now also grinning) Was delivered about 30 minutes ago.
LEO: Where from? (he had looked at the license plate frame walking up in prep for this question)
Me: Missouri. (location of dealership listed on plate frame)
LEO: Its a nice car, my brother has one. Is it fast?
Me: No idea, yet, honestly.
LEO: Well good luck with it. Before you pull out of the parking lot however, do me a favor and go into that KMart and get some Scotch tape and stick your temp tag to the rear window. I cant have you driving all over creation with *nothing* on your car.
DOH! :D
...cop follows from 6 inches behind...
I know exactly what you are describing. Ive got one better! Had the same basic experience (sans pullover) with a twist.
Driving home from a friend's house at about 2AM. Had not been drinking, etc, etc. Doing speed limit as deer were active in the area.
Cop pulls out from a gas station and follows me from... I'd say 700-800 feet back. Ok, fine. First move: he guns it and runs up my rear, I assume, to try and get me to exceed the speed limit.
No dice. He backs off again to 700-800 feet.
Then, get this... he turns his headlights off while he's back there. No toejam. Few seconds later, the headlights come back on RIGHT on my ass. That lasted 30 seconds or so and he pulled off onto another road.
Why? What is going through his head that results in the brain coming to the conclusion that this sort of idea is a "good" one. "Ill just turn my lights off, run up behind an unsuspecting motorist and turn the lights back on 6 inches from their bumper! It'll scare the b'jesus outta them!"
Ridiculous.

how many miles on it?
take it in to your shop, and have the thermostat, timing belt, and water pump(driven by the timing belt) checked if you don't know when they were done.
they very commonly go bad at around 40-50k miles.'
german engineering at it's finest. :aok
I wouldn't buy Mexico built VW that's for sure.
If first VIN Character is "3" then he could be in trouble. Some of them wont even start in Dealer Show room

I love looking at the pictures in car threads. Thanks everyone for posting theirs. Here's a couple pics of mine. The latest motor project pictured below is almost done. It will roll out somewhere between 525-550 HP plus another 190 or so on the NOS.

I HAD A SIMILAR situation here in nj. cop stopped me for noise in stratford. wrote me up.
as it happened, i was dating the chiefs ex-wife, and, rather strangely, had become friends with him. this always bothered her, but what the hell, right?
so that night, i'm telling my girlfriend about it when he stops by to pick up his son. he hears me, and asks me why i didn't tell the cop who i was. i told him that i didn't want to throw his name around like that.
he took the ticket from me, and made it disappear :aok.

I'm a picture ho'r too :t I love dem stupid cars, lucky I don't make much money so I can't have a Jay Leno's collection. The good thing is that I have do all the work myself, learning from scratch the hard way. I definitly wished I had a garage big enought and didn't have to work/paint in my driveway with the North Utah's weather. Maybe one day I'll amke enought so I can buy a half descent car to start with :pray

*nice* bits there Steve :)
Nice Firebird Eagle :)
..also nice rebuild on that 455 firebird.
And ya, I bought the Duster with no drivetrain in it, guy had blown it up.
I painted it, built the motor, trans, rear, installed the way cool K-member from Chrysler, only thing I did not do on that car was the welding.
I learned to weld a few years later.

tube framed, Narrowed Dana set forward 5", engine set back 13" .. was buildin it when aerospace jobs went pretty much into unobtanium status in the late '80's .. was gonna be the replacement for the Duster but I had a guy offer me way more than I thought it was worth and I needed the money more than I needed the car :(

The fairmont work is pretty sweet... I thought about doing that to my fairmont wagon. First car I ever owned, handed down from my parents. The original 255 blew up at 95k miles and they replaced it with a rebuilt 302 from a bronco. Not much hp (maybe 185) but it had a hell of a lot of torque. It had the 3-speed auto tranny optimized for 55mph (thanks Carter... jacka**) so it would accelerate like crazy to 125 and then just sit there with the motor begging for one more gear.
I fixed it up a bunch and sold it to my brother, but his wife totaled it 2 weeks later while hauling their 4 kids. They were ok but she hit a curb and a telephone pole while spinning so she managed to break the axle, bash in the liftgate, and tent the hood while pushing the water pump into the block. Nothing left to rebuild really, so they got a couple hundred bucks from insurance and off it went to the junkyard.
One of my few "bad cop" stories came while driving that car from San Diego to Colorado Springs. It was around 2am and I was approaching the AZ - NM border on the AZ side. I crossed under an overpass and figured it would be a great spot for a speed trap, so I made sure I was going exactly the speed limit. Well, sure enough a cop came screaming down the onramp with his lights off and he switched them on when he was just a couple of feet off my rear bumper. It startled me a bit, but not enough to keep me from wondering what kind of lawsuit settlement I'd walk away with if I dropped the tranny into second so he would rear-end me. Vehicular assault on an innocent USAF cadet would probably play well in front of a jury. But I refrained, and he probably kept doing that same dumb trick until he either retired or rammed someone. Jerk.
Still, any cop that gets that close to me might get a 6th to 3rd downshift to deal with... If his eyes are that bad then he shouldn't be driving :)

i think i left these out so far in this thread.
this was my daily driver till a lady in a saturn used me to test the laws of physics. she proved they stand.

she had a stock lower end, x303 cam, gt40 everything....well......every thing that now resides in the fairmont i pictured came from this car.
this was what i replaced her with....mostly for no other reason than i like the looks, and she sounded good with the glasspack. i've since replaced the glasspack with a flowmaster.\

i took her off the road back when gas was in the $4.50 range. i might re-tag her for awhile, as the caravan is gettin old. as in boring. :rofl
the dakota is all stock, 'cept for the muffler, cold air intake, and a police strobe kit.

Personaly, drag cars look really cool but they are not my cup of tea. I don't say they are easy to build/tune, nor driving them is simply smahing the gas and shifting 3 times. But for the money invested and the only thing they are good for, ain't worth is to me. :salute
Those tubbed meat monsters look squeaking on that body style GE. :t

I like circuit racing better but the odds of coming home with a massive paper weight are to great...
My uncle won a the Southern MiniStock Challenge in Florida in 2007, then sat out the next year because people were wrecking him at 5-10k a pop.
