I just installed nVidia's 3D glasses drivers, and I don't have the shutter glasses, but I can use the red/green mode with a cheapy pair of cardboard 3D glasses...
Let me tell ya, it is incredible! :O I accidentally poked my monitor trying to show someone something off my left wing! It is especially incredible when you're gliding in to catch a wire on a turning CV in your wounded bird... The sense of depth'll knock you out of your seat.
The only problem is, Aces High doesn't seem to be built with 3D in mind... The gunsight's on the same plane as the sight glass, so you can either focus on the sight or the bad guy out in front of your plane... Looking at the enemy, you'll see two sights on either side of him. Real gunsights were out on the horizon weren't they?
The bigger problem is that CON text (the plane type and distance text) is very close to your plane, so you'll see a little dot off in the distance and then out of focus text right by the dot... It's very disorienting (your eye focus flickers back and forth between the two), and it really hurts my eyes, so I have to turn off the text, which makes me effectively blind with an all-planes/all-countries plane-set.
Is there any way at all to move the gunsights and the con text out to the horizon? In the coming years, 120hz monitors will get cheaper and shutter glasses will too... 3D gaming'll get more and more popular, and it'd make sense for Aces High to have everything sorted out on the outset... At the very least, I'd be very appreciative. :D :pray :salute

I just bought a nVidia 9800 GTX that came with 3d glasses and now you tell me that I can use them in AH???!!! I already gave them to my kids :cry
-
Yep, the 9800 works... If you've got a card on the list and Vista or Win7, you're good to go.
http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_3D_vision_winvista_win7_191.03.html
Like I said, jaw dropping... Just remember that the colors are going to be terrible with red/green, and that they're just a pale imitation of the expensive implementations.

I'm color blind :lol Thanks man I will have to check it out. Kids will be pissed when I take the glasses back :x
Sorry for hijacking your thread.

+1.
Now to get some money to actually buy all this stuff...

The gunsight is projected from underneath onto the glass. I'm not sure what kind of focusing problems this would cause in real life, though.

The latest versions of NVIDIA drivers include stereoscopic capabilities.

Hmmmmm, I can see me searching for the literature that came with my vid card (250gtx)
Thanks for posting this,

In 6 or 7 years when the technology has gotten into puberty is when game designers will waste their time on building the code for 3D.
Don't expect anything any time soon. That, or find 10,000 of your friends to start playing AH.
It takes money to make money and I'd rather them spending on the things they do now.

Hey, you never know... That's why I made a wishlist thread. :D
I don't want to mislead anybody about what kind of card you'll need... If you go here:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_3D_vision_winvista_win7_191.03.html
and click on the 'Supported Products' tab, you'll see which cards work.
I'm not sure if a 9800tx+ counts since I haven't heard of it.
It's kinda hard to find the right colored glasses for nVidia's version, but I bought these:
http://www.amazon.com/3D-Glasses-ANACHROME-Anaglyph-YOUTUBE/dp/B001DSOUX6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1254753124&sr=8-2-fkmr1
and they're just about right... I think they're slightly off, but they're just about spot on. You can't buy the official nVidia glasses unless you get em as a pack-in with something else... I'm pretty sure the movie red/blue glasses don't work though.
-
Well crap, my video card is supported. I've already got the headphones and track-IR, when I put on these glasses my girlfriend might finally say I've gone too far.
I'm gonna miss her.

just get some cool aviator glasses, leather bomber jacket, play your top gun cd and enjoy the ride :salute

btw most cards in the 8 and 9 series above 500 are supported for 3d   but only for vista and windows 7 :cry.

I got this working last night and it gave me a headache before I even got off the runway :(
-
Ah, that sucks... I guess it's like how some people get sick thermalling in a glider or riding a rollercoaster. That ever happen to you at 3d movies? Maybe it's a low framerate since it gets halved from overlaying two images...
-
Can anybody take a screen shot?
Yes, I know it's going to look funky.
-
Sounds cool, but my wife would kill me for knocking stuff over on the desk... :lol

I haven't been to a 3d movie for many many many years. Hell, I haven't even worn 3d glasses in many many many years. May just be something I will have to adjust to, just didn't have much time last night. Never been sick on a rollercoaster, offshore fishing, or in aircraft (my dad used to rebuild gliders when I was a kid, but I have never been in one airborn).

I don't even know how! :o The nVidia drivers'll take a 3d screenshot, but it saves as a '.jps' file, which only works with their 3d image viewer... Taking screenshots the usual way just makes 2d images.

In the nvidia control panel in the 3D section, it says that 3D will work with AH but the mouse cursor may not be able to be seen. Is this true with your experience?
In order to run the cheap version, do you need a 120 Mhz monitor to display it or will a 60 Mhz monitor do the job? I am curious to try the free version. Im sure I can find a pair of 3D glasses somewhere or at least make one. Are the colors still very messed up when playing in red/blue mode?

Click that (same link as above) and select the additional information tab. That will list what you need, including HDTVs and projectors.
-
Thank you for the link. Yes, 3D does require a 120 MHz monitor.

No, no... that's only if you use the $200 shutter glasses...
The red/green version is definitely free and only needs a 60Hz monitor and a video card that can give you a good framerate... Since the left and the right frames are displayed at the same time, you can still get 60 fps total.
And yeah, the colors are VERY messed up in red/green mode. :) The shutter glasses should be just like looking at the monitor normally.
Like I said earlier, I bought these: http://www.amazon.com/3D-Glasses-ANACHROME-Anaglyph-YOUTUBE/dp/B001DSOUX6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1254753124&sr=8-2-fkmr1
and they're pretty good. nVidia has a specific green that they use, and not all glasses will work.
edit.

No, you still get your mouse cursor... The big problems with 3d in Aces High are what I talked about in the OP.
-
Doesn't sound worth it yet. I don't like the idea of having my colors messed with nor do I have the money to put into a 3D setup. Thanks for the info though.
-
Oh yeah, definitely... I don't use it seriously in AH. It is fun to play with sometimes, though, and it'll show you the future of gaming. After this, I'm gonna be first in line when a real solution comes out that's affordable. :D
edit. Oh, and that's why I made this thread. When everybody starts using those real solutions, Aces High's still gonna have the same problems in my OP, and that text's still gonna kill some eyeballs.
-
I had to update my drivers first but got the vision driver installed. Ordered a similar pair of glasses from amazon (didn't get the old man ones though :old: lol). I'll let you know how they work.
-
is it only the Nvidia cards or will my ATI 4870 do this too?

Errr, welcome to the video card wars! :D It's been pretty brutal so far, and it's not gonna let up soon.
I heard that this might work with ATI cards: http://www.iz3d.com/driver
but don't quote me...

Got my glasses in, ordered these:

I just used the red/cyan mode. Nvidia had a few demo photos from various games, one or two of those were really cool, the rest were so-so. The display on Aces High is not too bad. Sitting in the tower it looks like there is about an inch between your cursor and clipboard map, which is pretty cool. Sitting inside your plane is just sweet, lol. Looking down the nose of your plane, your throttle and stick, you six, so cool. The bombsight view (F6) is simply awesome. It looks like you are right next to a glass view hole looking down on the ground.
I did have some problems when it came to lining up the bombsights on a target. I need to make sure I back farther away from my monitor so my brain can take it all in as one image. Looking at other planes and trying to determine direction and speed was difficult. I'm sure a little more time and moving back from the monitor would help with that. Of course there is the headache involved, lol. Definitely fun to just mess around with. I highly doubt I'll start using it regularly in the game. But for $10, it's worth the S :old: s and giggles.

Yeah take a screenshot. I wanna see.
-
These don't do justice to the quality in game, but you can put on a pair of glasses and get a little idea, but I was disappointed how these turned out. I forgot to mention earlier something else that is pretty cool, diving strait into the ground. WHOA, it makes a strait down dive a little scarier, you can see that ground approaching you a lot better.

Yep, as it stands, this's definitely the cheap-o way of doing 3d, but red/blue glasses are so cheap that I can't say no! :D One day, though, real 3d methods (like shutter glasses or polarized displays) are gonna get so cheap that everybody'll have em, and it's gonna kick butt. :rock This red/blue stuff just lets you see the potential...
Now that I think about it, I bet that once people get used to the 3d in Aces High, it'll help their snapshots since they'll actually be able to see other planes in 3d-space and more effectively judge distances.

I used a cheap pair of red/green glasses you get with 3D DVD's and those pictures we're incredible with even that cheap pair. I can't imagine what it must look like with a decent pair.
Now i'm going to have to try to set it up on mine ;)

Well my Nvidia GeForce 9400 GT isn't on the list :cry
So i think its time to go shopping.
-
I don't know if you should buy a whole new card just for this. :)
The 3d's amazing, but depending on how your eyes react to the red/blue glasses, you might not want to fly around with them for very long at a time...
But hey, if you're already in the market for a new vid card, this's a pretty cool bonus! :D
