Was climbing to alt admiring the hellcat and realized its been 10 years since I started in the beta.
Tones of planes, tones of players,  Lots of vehicles. Soon to be WW1 arena.
How time flys. I probably played 4 years of that 10 years. lol

"That comes out to $1,800"

More unless you took into account the initial price per/mo that AH was after beta
which was much higher.

Cripes it has been 10 yrs. OMG.  It feels like yesterday I was flying the crates in
Red Baron and then finding & trying AW (4W?) out on a juiced up IBM (AT?) in
offline mode. Putting the B17 into autopilot and jumping around the guns to
shoot the offline drones flying by. lol.

Well all depends on how you look at it.

In my case, its been 10 years well spent.  :)

The respected enemy's,  teammates, strangers turned to friends, friends turned to brothers.
Yeah well worth it IMO.

That 1800.00 invested in most any equity fund would have netted you about 1670.00 over that same 10 years (because the last 3 years have been so awesome to us all).......as Im sure you are aware, we desire to have more money than what we invested right?  excellent choice on the 1800.00...wish I had mine back from Fidelity/

Ya, I took allot of it off and havent been fully addicted in about 7 years I would say.
Amazing the thrill of a fur ball in the arena though.
Ya, it was free for beta, then 30 bucks, I was a trainer for a short while, then flew for a while at the 30 price before they dropped it down.

1800, even if I had paid that much is less then a great DSLR lens. Less then a good canoe, less then a great TV. 1800 is half of what it costs me to go down to the states for an NFL game.
The cost is nothing. Its the time.

Looking at where AH has gone and  not gone, it is clear to me know that these guys had a very refined and powerful view of what was important in the game. Trying to explain to others what a powerful "team" and comraderie feeling you get with a good squad of guys who fly together every night is impossible. So everything that was implemented that built that was golden, other things are optional.

It is also clear that the hardest thing for HT and Pyro to wrestle with is the game of the game. It was terribly painful just to get the perk and eny systems into the game. The knights basically showed up for two months in nothing but hundreds of Hog Cs before the requests for something to ballance it went from "thats whining" to thats self evident. Little things, like you dont get kill messages until you land them. It wasnt that way at first, but did it ever improve the game when it got in.
Makeing the bombing so much more challenging, seems like a technical thing, but it is very much a game thing.
I still thing Sorti rates would be a great enhancement to the game, and would seem self evident after the fact.
That first sorti, in a spit IX that seemed to me to be shaking apart.  Doesnt seem like yesterday, its seems like a long time ago.

Its funny how little I knew about WW2 air combat when I started this game, even playing other games for a long time.
I could identify the different planes like a champ, but all the real complexities of how the planes and weapons were different from each other, I learned here or because of what I learned here.

Got me by a month Pongo !  Great to see your back.  I came to AH beta as a bomber pilot in the 91st bomber group.  Me and guys i cant remember exept one guy call sign sunchaser were using the arena to tune up for the anticipated online play of a game called b 17 2.  Well b17 2 became a complete bust and I really took to flying fighters.  I cut my teeth on the spit 9 like everyone else an8d was hooked into the game.

The 91st faded away guys gravitated to IL2 while I stayed for the most part.  most of 2000 I remained in the 91st, I then formed the 78th FG for a while all the until like Feb of 01.  I then hooked up with a bunch of chaps in the 56th FG maybe you remember them.  Most of the guys have gone names like Sancho Frenchy and Ammo.  I hope they make it back I still keep in touch with ammo via facebook.  Nomde has been CO for the last 6 years i think.

Real life (making and raising kids, work stuff) and just game burnout would keep me off for months at a time.
The longest I have been gone was like an 8 month stretch but still kept paying the gas for Dale's RV8.

I too remember paying the 29.95 a month.  For the most part this is my little escape from reality.

Time does fly.

I started AcesHigh a week or two before AW died so I guess I "technically" started in beta during tour 11.

I really HATED AcesHigh when I first tried it and quit flying a few months.

Picked it up again later in 2002, ran across some of my squaddies from AirWarrior, and have flown ever since.

Time does indeed fly by.

I can only imagine, if you guys started in 1999 and the first Tour (v1.0) was in 2000 that's an entire year without collecting any revenue from the game and just trying to grow the future customer base through the open beta.

Pyro,
Having done a few go lives myself I was amazed at the time, and still am amazed.
You guys must have had a really really strong sense of the fundamentals of what you wanted to have made it at all.
I remember saying get rid of the knights because the sides were always 25 bish, 30 rooks and 4 of us knights..but you guys seemed pretty sure that more knights would show up some day. lol

FX1, Soulyss  <S>!
It is fun to be back, and the most important rule of AH still seems to work. All you have to do is find someone worse then you to salvage the night. Golf and fly fishing are allot less forgiving.

It's interesting how the player base has and hasn't changed.  I remember that a lot of the players came from disgruntled WarBirds and from the old Air Warrior 3 fiasco.  I tried AW3 at the same time beta 1 for Aces High came out.  I was flying War Birds with our media account but wasn't really impressed.  I tried AW2 - that was a hoot but man Air Warrior was expensive.

Pyro: I think the player base has definately gotten younger, but I'm wondering as this product matures and develops further, what other enhancements can be made to keep the older farts still flying or return?

"I think the player base has definately gotten younger...."

I used to think that but now I'm actually beginning to believe it's "US" who've gotten
older!  heheheh

"...what other enhancements can be made to keep the older farts still flying or return?"

WWI planes! :)    Couldn't resist!  :)  Wish there was some kind of virtual Viagra that
would let's us stay up all night, whip our joysticks all about and permit us to shoot each
other down over and over and over again?

(fine. shoot me for that one)

Just remembered the first time I saw AH was when Hitech loaded up an alpha? of AH on
a pc at the AirWarrior '99 convention in Dallas.  with SB, NB,LW and Jonathan Baron as well
as a few others looking over his shoulder I though to myself this guys got balls for doing
that here - considering he was a creator of WB's and there was a competative antagonism
running between the player bases.
However with the complete lack of any updates coming for AW and relatively nothing
substantial about where they were with AW:Vietnam I immediately looked into AH when I
got back home and found out about the beta. Was 150% hooked right off the bat.
AH was way YEARS ahead of  AW and a lot better than WB.

i noticed the flight dynamics got a lot more realistic after HT started flying that rv6...

I think buying that plane might have been the best research and development purchase he ever made.

lost first bbs acct in the big bbs meltdown in 01.

Think it was late sept, oct though when I first started flying in beta.
I know we didn't have a bomber yet, because I remember when the b17 came in, pretty bare bones, no bombsight, etc.

I missed the first tour of pay for play as Daddog was asking me to hold as he was in consult with HTC to bring the whole squad over from warbirds. (got us a sweetened deal too!)

Tour 7 I started as a trainer, and except for a few months off to prevent total burnout I've been here ever since and always under the same name.

There are a few that can match that record, but not many.  :)

Not in AH, Pongo - but I started flying online combat flight sims back in late '97, 2-D Warbirds and Dawn of Aces. Ah, the days of 'warp factor 5' dial-up connex and the disappearance of wingmen 'taken by aliens' are gone forever - thank goodness. Switched to AH when iEN finally porked WB/DoA with their WB2006/Flyboys update and discovered a better way to spend my hard-earned. Right now, I'm fiscally embarrassed and not too well, so I've suspended my account - but, like MacArthur, I shall return.

Yup, I had an SVGA airwarrior subscription for a month or so, and had to long distance for the dialup. Must have been in 1993? Something like that.
There was no way I could afford to play it. Just the connect costs where crazy.
