My vote for the best movie of all time is 12 Angry Men, 1958 Henry Fonda. :bolt:
-
The Lord of the Rings.
Don't even need to think about that one.
-
Naming the best movie of all time is pretty tough to do without being a little biased to an actor, director, genre etc. I have a hard time pin pointing my favorite as it can change over time as I may rediscover a movie.
As for Lord of the Rings, for me, in the top 50. The book among books, for me, would rank higher than the movie among movies ranking.
-
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes or Dude, Wheres My Car?
-
Gilda!
-
Tron or the Princess Bride. The new Star Trek is still in the top 50, but not all the way there. The Blob (old one) is probably fifth.
-
either Saving Private Ryan or Braveheart :rock
-
The last Samurai or 300
then again "Descent" was quite awesome
of course there is "Braveheart"
or possibly "The 13th warrior"
Then again there is "Kingdom of Heaven"
damn Dude what about "The Vikings"
ya impossible to say one movie is the greatest :cry
-
my personal favorite. not for the actors/actress but for its comedic ingenuity.
-
Matrix or Star Wars movies.
-
I guess Im just old school, but The Sting is my fav by far.
-
Clerks
Not the best ever made...but my personal favorite.
-
"Dr. Strangelove" pretty much has it all
For something more recent, "The 5th Element" is pretty awesome
-
I refuse to pick just one. Unlike a really good album any good movie no matter how good can only be seen a few times and thats it.
One of the best based on how many times ive been able to see it without falling asleep : Star Wars
One of the worst based on the fact that ill NEVER see it again: Top Gun
-
Forrest Gump
-
Casablanca.
-
Pearl Harbor!
Flyboys
-
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned "12 O'Clock High".
-
(http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/sports/thetoydepartment/Big%20Lebowski.jpg)

Zulu or Kelly's Heroes.
If forced to pick that is, I still cannot choose just one. I can just about handle two.
-
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned "12 O'Clock High".

The greatest of all movies would be The Blair Witch Project.
This would be due to some simple reasons that combined created a complex situation. First was the internet feeding from the local news of missing people. This made tens of millions of people from other parts of the world to become interested.
Second was the internet feeding information about the purpose of the missing people's assignment. Video showed that hand held cameras discovered revealed the story of what happened. This created the impulsiveness of tens of millions to feel the need to see this footage at the theaters.
Third was the experience of being in the theaters viewing the documentary with hundreds of other viewers. The footage from 2 or 3 seperate cameras recorded the vents as they unfolded. Many people at this point was wondering if this film was true or false.
Fourth was after the fact that the film was entirely fictional and no people were actually missing. It was a giant hoax and made many people mad but the rest truly enjoyed the largest prank of all time. No other attempt had been made since the Orson Welle's broadcast of "The War of the Worlds" on radio in the 1930's.
Fifth was the financial implications. The film cost around $700,000 to make with the usual 20 million in marketing and distribution. The box office take in North America alone was 150 million. The best record at the time was a little movie in 1977 that cost 30 miilion to make and made 350 million in two years of release with an addditional release 20 years later for another 100 million. Film studios took notice from the hoax movie of true profit. How many big buget films with big stars has tanked? Waterworld, Cutthoat Island, The Cable Guy, and others. This year alone showed two examples of low budget movies with great story telling, Distict 9 and Paranormal Activity.
Does the greatest of all movies imply that 1) be a huge special effects movie 2) be a true story 3) be one that requires a moral ending? If so, then #1 would be Titanic, various science fiction and fantasy films, various war films that utilize CGI. The #2 category would be historical films, biographical movies, and documentaries. The last category would be films closely realted to catgeory 2 but be hinged on a particular viewpoints like war, religion, finance, medical, and other issues in society where the main characters have to make a difficult choice.
Was The Blair Witch Project a hoax? Yes
Was it a riduculous movie? Yes
Was it displayed in poor recording quality and sound? Yes
Was it intriguing at first? Yes
Was it suspenseful? Yes
Was it fun to watch? Yes
Was it fun to watch the people even after hearing the truth still believed? Most definetely yes. :rofl
Did more people watch it based on supposed actual events? Yes
Did more people watch it based friends believing it to be true? Yes
Did we all get duped? Yes
The film didn't possess the epic storline of an action adventure. The film didn't have any big stars. The film didn't have a big director. The film didn't have a big budget. The film didn't have a romantic storyline.
The film had humor, suspense, and feeling that you were with them on the journey.
When it comes to the title of "The Greatest Movie of all Time"? The true answer lies with the individual. Each individual has different outlooks in life that vary from person to person. Many of the replies in the earlier posts I'll agree with as great movies. And, there's many more not listed so far.
To actually choose one movie above all others is truly unfair. There would have to be a criteria agreed on by all to choose the one that fits the criteria 100 percent. Is that possible? Probably not.
The only real question in this line of thought would be what is your greatest movie of all time? This way the answers truly reflect the individual and not trying to compare great movies from different genres at the same time.

Lord of the Rings was just incredible, i am not usually a fan of elf-like stuff too.

Simon Pegg always does a great job. Spaced anyone?
-
Shawshank Redemption by far.
The courtroom scene & a few other parts were filmed in my hometown (pop. 8,000).
-
The greatest of all movies would be The Blair Witch Project.
your joking right?
One of the all time stupidest movies ever made. Intriguing to only those with an IQ level lower then a grain of sand.
I found the movie irritating to watch.'
Its only redeeming quality was that the people that I know who saw it and thought it was great. Only reaffirmed to me my longstanding opinion that they were idiots to begin with.
-
Shawshank Redemption, followed closely by Holiday Inn. Green Mile gets an honorable mention.
-
Casablanca.
There is alot of old movies that often get looked over.
That is one of them. Certainly can be listed in any all time greatest list.
"African Queen" is another
Another one believe it or not is "Gone with the Wind." After years and years of dismissing it as a "chick flick" I watched it in its entirely for the first time a couple of years ago and was amazed at how much I enjoyed it and how well done it was.
Key Largo.
Older movies are often overlooked by todays younger crowd because of bad acting and/or lack of special effects.
But they really are a window into history and what people were like back in the day as the saying goes.
The speech. Mannerisms we all common IRL back when those movies were made.
Cant tell you how many times I've heard elderly people refer to a face as a "mug"
Or the time my father in law told a cop to "flap off, flatfoot"
Or use the word "see" in describing something much in the same way we hear "ya know" now.
Another great movie to add to the list. "Life with father."
Caught this one day on TV by accident and enjoyed it so much I went out and bought it
-
John Woo's 'Killer' raw clunky but in some ways true movie genius.
-
For you WW2 flying fans, "Dark blue world" is one of the better ones. Deep enough to watch for a couple of times.

Pacino, De Niro, Kilmer, Sizemore, even a young Natalie Portman. Awesome plot, great acting and the greatest cops n' robbers shootout ever.

"Simon Pegg always does a great job. Spaced anyone?"
Hoho, I live not far from where Pegg and Co. made 'Hot Fuzz', Wells High Street will never seem the same again. :lol
Too right, no thinking person can have only one favourite movie (unless he/she's only ever seen one movie, of course). So here goes . . .
Best fantasy movie: 'Lord of the Rings', with 'Highlander' close behind for its great soundtrack. 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' a close third.
Best aviation movie, peacetime: 'Always'. That opening scene of the PBY water pick-up is a classic.
Best aviation movie, wartime: 'Battle of Britain', with 'Memphis Belle' close on its six and 'Twelve O'Clock High' backing up in third place.
Best infantry movie, WW2: 'Band of Brothers'. Alright, it's a TV series but it's shot to movie standards. :salute Easy Company.
Best infantry movie, 19th century: 'Zulu'. Brave lot, the Zulus, they took some beating.
Best war at sea movie: 'The Cruel Sea' for WW2, 'Master and Commander' for the sailing era.
Best prisoner-of-war movie: 'Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence'. Blows away the stereotypes, for sure. 'Empire Of The Sun' a very close second.
Best romance: 'Casablanca'.
Best prison movie: 'The Shawshank Redemption'. Magnificent.
Best animation: 'The Jungle Book'. Wonderful soundtrack, a-reeb-ba-do-dah . . .
Best stop-motion animation: Wallace and Gromit in 'A Fine Day Out' with its wonderful riveted-together Moon rocket complete with curtains.
Best 'Western': 'Dances With Wolves', Costner's masterpiece, Frederick Remington's paintings brought to life.
Best 'Eastern': 'Last of the Mohicans'. Daniel Day-Lewis' reloading at the run is something to behold, and Wes Studi's Magua is superb.
That'll do, off to rest me eyes now.

My vote for the best movie of all time is 12 Angry Men, 1958 Henry Fonda. :bolt:
A very good movie indeed.
I just could not pic one. There are so many. None I would say in recent years.
-
Hard to pick just one, but, what the heck ...
"Animal House" - Why I went to college.
Runners up:
"Kentucky Fried Movie" - Fist Full of Yen?
"Airplane" - Picked a bad week to stop sniffing glue.
"Hot Shots" - Barkely and Laimbeer in the bar fight scene.
"Fast Times at Ridgemont High" - Already cited.
"Caddy Shack" - Most quotable + classic Rodney.
Too many to pick.

“To the last, I grapple with thee; From Hell's heart, I stab at thee; For hate's sake, I spit my last breath at thee!”
No disrespected to Gregory Peck, but the all-time best delivery of that line to Mr. Fine Corinthian Leather himself.

Oh, and J. J. Abrams can bite me while we're at it..
-
there was a movie, which i cant think of the name, which was based on the 1914 (? or maybe it was 1916, sometime within 3 years...) shark attacks At Atlantic City. it was really good, only saw it once though and that was a few years ago... i think it was on discovery channel actually.
another good comedy is Down Periscope... always love watching that...
-
Too many good ones out there.
It Happened one Night-Clark Gable & Claudette Colbert
-
Airplane!
Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
No other movies to which I have been exposed share the sheer number of people familiar with the quotes. I cannot count the times that complete chaos reigned on VOX going through the exchanges.
'Best' in terms of cinematography, acting, plot, special effects, or soundtrack? Nope.
'Best' in terms of entertainment.. Yup.
-
The empire of the sun, really liked that one.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
Holy Grail is one of those odd quotables. If you're in a boffer group or the SCA, you absolutely hate it when newbies come in and think quoting it is cool. It's just so obvious it's become cliche. But regardless of the prejudice against quoting Holy Grail, once one person starts the ENTIRE group will join in.

Saving Private Ryan is #1 war movie ever in history
-BigBOBCH
-
Fight Club imo.
-
Guitar Player Magazine once done a survey of famous guitar players to find out who the guitar players guitar player is. Just so happens it turned out to be Spinal Taps Nigel Tufnel even though he is a character in a movie and not a guitar player because everyone could quote a line of Nigels from the the movie Spinal Tap.
-
12 O'Clock High is a great war movie alright. But there are tons of others, and it's really hard to say which is best.
Apocalypse Now
The Bedford Incident
Patton
Flying Tigers
Tora, Tora, Tora
Cross of Iron (James Coburn, James Mason, with Sam Peckinpah directing)
Enemy At The Gates
Sahara (the one with Bogie, Bridges, and the M3 tank)
Desert Rats (not to be confused with the TV show Rat Patrol)
Tears of the Sun (I think that was it - Bruce Willis as a merc)
Full Metal Jacket (gotta love Kubrick and R.Lee)
Band of Brothers (technically not a movie, but had the same high production values)
Now, the worst war movie had to be the recent "Pearl Harbor" - wow - the Eric Mangini of war movies.
Thinking about it now, there really hasn't been a superb fight pilot movie. The Blue Max (w/George Peppard) was kind of close. Top Gun doesn't count - nor the scores of rip offs it spawned. Battle of Britain wasn't bad, but it was a bit too large in scope. Flight of the Intruder I guess is as close as you get recently.
-
Now, the worst war movie had to be the recent "Pearl Harbor"
Agreed.
Forgot to list my favourite 'road movie': 'Easy Rider', with 'Vanishing Point' a close second. And 'Fandango' reminds me of my salad days.
"To what we were - and what we will be!"

vanishing point, what a great movie! I almost lived that one, took a 73 challenger across country, but never got chased by cops!!

Gonna have to go with Shawshank for #1
Full Metal Jacket
The Green Mile
Slingblade
Saving Private Ryan
Lucky # Slevin
(not necessarily in that order)
-
Star Wars all six of them. braveheart. the BIG LEBOWSKI. Gladiator. RUDY. too many for me to list
-

You're right. It was a dramatic recreation of the rogue shark attacks that inspired "Jaws" many years later. There was a book out about those attacks a few years ago that coincided with that special. Very informative and gripping to watch. They never did figure out what exactly it was that killed those people.
-
Star Wars all six of them.
You fail BIG time. The Prequels have ABSOLUTELY NO PLACE WHATSOEVER in a list of "Best Movies Ever." More like, "Worst movies that destroyed the best franchise ever."
-
Do you like gladiator movies?
