I've asked this before but i narrowed it down to 2 laptops now, the Dell Studio 16XPS - http://www.dell.com/us/en/home/notebooks/laptop-studio-xps-16/pd.aspx?refid=laptop-studio-xps-16&s=dhs&cs=19 (http://www.dell.com/us/en/home/notebooks/laptop-studio-xps-16/pd.aspx?refid=laptop-studio-xps-16&s=dhs&cs=19) its the one on the far left.
or the HP DV6 Quad Edition laptop- http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_can_series.do?storeName=computer_store&category=notebooks&a1=Category&v1=High+performance&series_name=dv6tqe_series&jumpid=in_R329_prodexp/hhoslp/psg/notebooks/High_performance/dv6tqe_series (http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_can_series.do?storeName=computer_store&category=notebooks&a1=Category&v1=High+performance&series_name=dv6tqe_series&jumpid=in_R329_prodexp/hhoslp/psg/notebooks/High_performance/dv6tqe_series)
The HP seems to be way more powerful compared to the Dell but i have heard people say that it has a very short battery life and that it gets very hot after a few minutes, and that u pretty much have to have it pluged in (which the AC adapter is the size of a xbox power adapter) while gaming otherwise it'll die? I dont know too much about laptops so i hope i can get some advice.
-
My personal experience is short batt life with HP. Dell seems to be a bit better there.
It's all about personal preference really. My dad and I personally like Dell's, but others might want HP. Also, both laptops are customizable...which features were you deciding to get? Or were you getting the bare bones?
-
On the Dell i would only upgrade the 3GB memory to 4GB and the Hardrives 250GB - 320GB. the HP i would leave standard
Basicly i am looking for a laptop that will last me a while and be my main computer since i am going into the military, and i really wanna get back into Aces High and America's Army

I have one of these (http://compreviews.about.com/od/deskreplace/gr/GatewayP7805uFX.htm) which will run any game out there really well ATM. think its been replaced with the p7808 though. Same animal, a bit better cpu and windows 7. DDR3 memory all around makes a big difference in a laptop imho.
-
we use Apple and HP laptops at work and they seem to be pretty durable, unlike any of the other brands we've used over the years. havent had any dells long term to compare though.

How well does this machine handle AH2? Curious...

I've always been a fan of Toshiba laptops.

Bought a HP Pavillion DV8 last Tuesday , dead by Friday :( one of the hard drives died .
-
i have a HP dv something series, for 3-4 years, but after 2 years my monitor was broken, was replaced in extended warranty, now is cracked again, same way along the joint section all around. i'll dump it and get something stronger built, my op pinion HP are nice as design, but too ..much cheap plastic, not fit for mobile use.
-
Lenovo's are expensive but inherited their design from IBM thinkpads, which are a reference.

I bought my Daughter the DV6. It comes with the largest battery available. You can get quite a bit of time out of it if set to conserve. If you run it full up you get about 1 hour from the 12 cell battery. My daughters is set to be full up when plugged in and to conserve when on battery. I prefer HP over Dell any day.
In any case... the more powerful the machine the more power it requires.
Only other machine I even considered was a Toshiba. They make good lappys too.
-
A Toshiba, comparatively equiped, will give you more service and less problems than either HP or Dell. We are still using a Toshiba we bought in 2004 before we started RVing full time.

The folks I know using the HPs seem to like them very well. Some have had them for years.

I am also looking at laptops to treat myself this Christmas... i have been looking around and i like what i see from HP.This is the lappy i am looking at http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+Pavilion+Laptop+with+AMD+Turion%26%23153%3B+II+Ultra+Dual-Core+Mobile+Processor/9556296.p?id=1218123847586&skuId=9556296 (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+Pavilion+Laptop+with+AMD+Turion%26%23153%3B+II+Ultra+Dual-Core+Mobile+Processor/9556296.p?id=1218123847586&skuId=9556296Here)

neither, go with Sony.

neither, go with Sony.
I wont support sony any more than I have to.
I will say their computers are crap.
-
I own two of their lap tops right now, and have owned a Sony laptop since 2002. By far better than anything else I have ever owned in the laptop department.

Have your tried to upgrade the OS? They have it now where you can't upgrade. The machine will no longer boot if you try to.

Some people from my school suggested that i get a Asus laptop? anybody heard of them? They said that Asus laptops are very very reliable.

And they have all diffrent types of laptops

Just last week I read statistics of the return rates of laptops from different brands and HP was the worst of the few. Other brands that I remember was Asus being the least returned and Apple at third place. I tried to find the article but couldn't. Can't even remember which browser I used to view it. Besides that I know a guy working on IT who every once in a while curses HP to the hell due to the warranty procedures.
So I would go with Dell instead of HP.
-
I have only worked on a couple older Asus computers, one being a netbook. Personally I don't think it's really the maker of the laptop, but more of the components inside it. Unless you are going to be tossing it around a lot, durability shouldn't matter too much. I personally haven't dropped/threw my laptop once in six months, always "set" it down, has no scratches on it, and the plastic is starting to come off the lid. :furious .
But just look at the components, honestly. Those Asus ones don't look too bad, not sure how those 260's are, though.

this guy admins 19 HP desktops, 5 HP laptops and 2 HP servers (plus a powerbook and an imac) and has found their warranty service to be fantastic (and cheap). we use office hours/next day/onsite for everything except the servers which are 24x7 onsite and it does what it says on the tin. helps if you can diagnose stuff pretty well, if its plainly a mobo problem you can get them to bring one along, saves the "I'll be back on monday with the parts" delay ;)
I should add that we only use their business ranges and its HP's UK support so ymmv.

I am trying to find something under $1,000. my mom said she can get me 30% off a Dell cause she has a coupon. not sure what i am gonnna do

I have only real life experience from myself and friends.

Personally before I use to build my own computers I would buy Dells, never had a problem with any of the PC's I bought from them, or the 1 laptop I bought, they were always very reliable.
-

Just upgraded to Windows 7 to try it out on one. Worked flawlessly.
-
If you get a Dell I recommend you pay the extra for the American technical support just to avoid the half _ _ _ idiots in India it is worth the money.
-
Lenovo are probably still the most solid but its debatable if they are worth the premium. We mainly buy Dells at work these days - primarily because their warranty procedures beat HP hands down.

There's no trouble with the onsite warranty service, I know it works just fine. It's only a call and someone comes to pick up or fix it. But what about the guy who deals with the issue at the onsite service and does the actual paper work? This guy I know doesn't just admin computers, but also fixes hardware issues and has to order the replacement hardware. That's where he says things get more difficult with HP than any other brand he's came across with. Lots of paper work and hassle over simpliest things.
-
hehe I dont really care how much paperwork the service engineer has to do, as long as the machine is back working within 24h of failure. NMP :)

Then they may have changed their ways. I wont buy them and I suggest to friends... stay away from them.
I've built many computer for myself and associates. Never any lappys.
-
I've found both to be decent once the bloatware is removed. I personally have a Dell which I haul with me on motorcycle trips and haven't had any problems.

Good point - step one with any PC from a major vendor is to do a complete re-install of the OS.

I have owned an HP, I thought it was ok, but the service sucked. My wife used to have a Dell, that thing was a piece of poop. I stick with what works, and the Sony's. Their customer service is excellent, the product is superior, and the performance is phenomenal at the price.
I too, build my own computers, but not laptops.

I've been using Toshiba laptops since 1996. I still have my original one, and the kids still use it occasionally to type reports on, etc. when the other ones in the house are being used. It's kind of a pain since you gotta plug in the external CD drive, copy the files to a CD, then take them to another computer to print, but it's still working.
I was sold on Toshiba when a student knocked mine off a table onto a hard tiled floor, and nothing broke, and it still worked afterward. Of the several my wife and I have owned since then, none have given us any problems. OOps - I take that back. My wife's did quit working when she spilled a bottle of children's cough syrup into the keyboard - but I really don't think that was the fault of Toshiba.
