I own two of their lap tops right now, and have owned a Sony laptop since 2002.  By far better than anything else I have ever owned in the laptop department.

Have your tried to upgrade the OS? They have it now where you can't upgrade. The machine will no longer boot if you try to.

Just last week I read statistics of the return rates of laptops from different brands and HP was the worst of the few. Other brands that I remember was Asus being the least returned and Apple at third place. I tried to find the article but couldn't. Can't even remember which browser I used to view it. Besides that I know a guy working on IT who every once in a while curses HP to the hell due to the warranty procedures.

So I would go with Dell instead of HP.

I have only worked on a couple older Asus computers, one being a netbook. Personally I don't think it's really the maker of the laptop, but more of the components inside it. Unless you are going to be tossing it around a lot, durability shouldn't matter too much. I personally haven't dropped/threw my laptop once in six months, always "set" it down, has no scratches on it, and the plastic is starting to come off the lid. :furious .

But just look at the components, honestly. Those Asus ones don't look too bad, not sure how those 260's are, though.

I know a guy working on IT who every once in a while curses HP to the hell due to the warranty procedures.

this guy admins 19 HP desktops, 5 HP laptops and 2 HP servers (plus a powerbook and an imac) and has found their warranty service to be fantastic (and cheap). we use office hours/next day/onsite for everything except the servers which are 24x7 onsite and it does what it says on the tin. helps if you can diagnose stuff pretty well, if its plainly a mobo problem you can get them to bring one along, saves the "I'll be back on monday with the parts" delay ;)

I should add that we only use their business ranges and its HP's UK support so ymmv.

Personally before I use to build my own computers I would buy Dells, never had a problem with any of the PC's I bought from them, or the 1 laptop I bought, they were always very reliable.

Just upgraded to Windows 7 to try it out on one.  Worked flawlessly.

If you get a Dell I recommend you pay the extra for the American technical support just to avoid the half _ _ _ idiots in India it is worth the money.

Lenovo are probably still the most solid but its debatable if they are worth the premium. We mainly buy Dells at work these days - primarily because their warranty procedures beat HP hands down.

There's no trouble with the onsite warranty service, I know it works just fine. It's only a call and someone comes to pick up or fix it. But what about the guy who deals with the issue at the onsite service and does the actual paper work? This guy I know doesn't just admin computers, but also fixes hardware issues and has to order the replacement hardware. That's where he says things get more difficult with HP than any other brand he's came across with. Lots of paper work and hassle over simpliest things.

hehe I dont really care how much paperwork the service engineer has to do, as long as the machine is back working within 24h of failure. NMP :)
