wow
Just .. plain .. wow
great story, digital 3d works very well at generating suspension of disbelief and immersion..
..you really are there witnessing the story.
This is the best tour-de-force of what CG can add to telling a great story ..it took my breath away.
It plugs into a whole series of emotions/dreams that people have.
I am blown away by it.
-GE (seen it twice so far .. goin again with the granddaughters tomorrow)

Is it better in I-max than regular?

you're being bent over by the theater anyway. may as well go all out.

Just saw it, I agree greyeagle. :rock
-
I just saw it in 3d. I was impressed.

I do the odd bit of work on the systems involved. Weta digital have a server farm of 4300 servers (don't ask me how many CPU/cores, they're all multi), and the post production and other related companies are connected via a 120Gb fibre ring. It's the biggest server farm in the southern hemisphere :D

Just not really interested in going to see it and neither are my two boys. So when its out on DVD in a few weeks we will rent it at the Redbox for $1. Then they will get my money.

just saw it. great movie must see

Too bad the game sucks monkey gonads.
ack-ack

It made my buy on release list along with Valkyrie and IGB. Just amazing.
Only disturbing thing was I was actually on the Human side. But I ended up laughing at how stupid we are. It had a story so engaging I was glued to the screen. And the CGI was just AMAZING.
:aok

If you watch it in 2D, dont bother. Amazing 3D is the point.
-
It was good.
It wasn't high art, but it was what it was, and it was well made.
AS far as the storyline...well it seemed to me like "(The Matrix + Dances with Wolves) in Space". Thats not meant as a knock, just something I noticed.
The 3D was done well. By that I mean it just fit seamlessly into the movie. They didn't try stupid, gratuitous 3d tricks to amaze you.
It was great eye candy, with a story good enough not to ruin it. I'd recomend seeing it, on the big screen, and in 3d.
Seems to me though that i would have been a lot smarter to have released this last summer or waited until next summer.

Seriously, just go see it for the visuals. It is stunning.

It's unfortunate that all that spectacular CGI was wasted on a predictable and overdone story line. It is "Pocahantas" rolled up with "The Last Rain Forest". Another typical hollywood bash of capitalism and the military. Entertaining? Certainly, and worth seeing on the big screen for its visual impact. However, not I think destined to be a classic. There's just nothing new here as far as storyline goes, not even a fresh take on old themes.

+1
Just coming back from the cinema. If I were 15 again, I would have loved it.
But now, after getting used to the visual effects, my wife and me grew increasingly bored by the simple storyline, the shallow clichee characters and the predictable dialogs. We left during the intermission (That's rare for me, the last movie I couldn't bear to watch until the end was Zoolander ;))

Just got back. Boy is that a movie!!!!
Your never going to get that experience from a DVD. You have to see it 3D on the big screen.

Question...will it be around the same if I eventually buy the DVD, get a pair of 3D glasses, and watch it on my projector at home? Screen would be about 10 feet wide...
Serious question.

Wish I could see 3D, but being almost blind in one eye doesn't allow me to see it, I'll still go see the 2D version.

Mom will let you lug home a large 3D screen?
Seriously.

LOL .. wife and I took our 3 grand daughters to see it ..youngest is 13 ..she asked how they got the people's costumes to fit so well.
They were glued to the screen, completely silent (rare doesn't begin to describe *that*) throughout the movie :)
We saw it in 2d, -lol- .. Kathy bought the tickets then asked where the 3d glasses were? .. LOL .. err .. I hated to point out
that that theater wasn't even showing 3d, the ticket guy did that admirably well, not even laughing (amazing self control as it broke me up)
It was very good, but the 3d definitely adds to the immersion in many areas.

I still dont have the slightest idea what the movie is about..........Previews make no sense at all

Its about a crippled Marine who goes to a foreighn planet "Pandora" to co-exist with a genetic mix of a Pandorean and his brother. His brother being a famous scientist who got kilt. Because this marine is such a close DNA mis with his brother they want to use him instead of growing another pandoran clone, which I gather is very expensive and takes a long time.
The clone is an actual being, a mix of pandoran and human. they put the marine into a special bed and upload his mind into the clone. Bingo! Now he can move around in his pandoaran body. BTW the reason they are doing this is two fold. #1 Pandora is chock full of a special mineral ore they need, one worth gazzillions an ounce. #2 there is a a science team that is studying the planet and its inhabitants, a Indian type humanoid that still shoots bows and arrows.
So this marine, Skully, goes in. Meets a pandoran girl and gets into all kinds of adventures. Eventually he realizes the humans just want to screw the Pandorans over and ends up switching sides. In a nutshell there it is. its sort of like Dances With Wolves on LSD.
Yes the story is starting to get old but the visuals/audio is worth it.

Some people just don't appreciate the comedic value of freak, gasoline fight accidents :)

The *very* cool thing about Avatar is ..
..now they have the tech to do Dragon Rider's of Pern
.. and The Ship Who Sang
.. and ..perhaps Starship Troopers using the actual book instead of just the title
.. Hammer's Slammers ..
.. so many others :)

LOL That is what my wife said as we left the theater. I thought it was more like Fern gully the kids cartoon. So we settled on (Dances with wolves + Fern Gully )
Have to say i was impressed I had low expectations going into it. Other than a little eviornmental mumbo jumbo it was a neat flick. :D

That one Pandoran chick is hot. I'd hit that. Best of all, she likes to hunt. OK so now you can join the 5 mile high club with the Pandoran chick and your own flying Lizard. But you best hope the Winged Lizard from Hades dont happen upon you both at a bad time. :x then :uhoh then :pray and then either  or :devil depending.

I'm guesiing it's Last Samuri meets Star Wars. Probably best new movie to see around christmas.
-
Boring. Sorry, but that's what it felt like. The storyline was WAY too predictable. I know this is some huge bias on my part, but I really hated how they portrayed the military. It was practically like what Hollywood and the liberal media think of Iraq, just on a different planet. I could not stand that at all. I would've preferred to see Invictus (really excited about that one) or Old Dogs again (laughed my rear off in that movie). The visuals were some of the best I've ever seen, though. The 3D version was stunning.
-
I absolutely loved it. Best movie I have seen in a long long time.
-

Same here trax. We are planning on going to see it early Christmas day. There is an 11:00am 2D showing. Hopefully it will not be too crowded.
So many films we would like to see. Sherlock Holmes looks fun too.

That new movie with Russel Crowe and Ridley Scott looks awesome.

Princess of Mars series would be awesome... but I heard Disney had got the rights recently, dunno how disney are gonna handle scantily clad martian princesses.
-
Well, I just got back from seeing it in 3d on the big screen. I have to say that I was absolutely amazed. It felt like I was part of the story. It was definantly worth $20 for two people.
-
Ya, I just got back from seeing it a 2nd time. Brought the wife and kid this time. As we used to say back in the '70s, "ahahaha man that was trippy".
Seeing it a second time you notice stuff you missed the first. I havnt felt this way about a movie since 1977 when Star Wars first hit the screen. But Im a big Sci-Fi fan.
-
Yeah I watched it myself tonight, but here at home. I have to say it was a really good movie, amazing special FX, and a great story line.
Spoiler Alert:
Only question I have about it is what was it that happened at the end, was his mind permanently transferred into the Avatar?
-
Ya HAVE to watch it in 3D. Was amazing! :O

Can't watch it in 3D, I'm almost blind in my left eye, you need to be able to see out of both your eyes in order to see 3D movies, until about 10 years ago whenever I'd go see something in 3D, like at an amusement park, I would always think what are they talking about, I didn't see anything look like it was coming at me, then I realized it was due to my left eye.

Except the Ewoks kicked butt way better than those blue dudes.
Great effects. Boring, dull and very predictable story.
