I would hope Spiderman himself would be proud to rock this bad boy :x
Yes, it's that time of year again and Giovanni decided to pick something a bit more "normal"
(last year's car http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrdDuD9611Q (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrdDuD9611Q) )
Time trials tonight, race on Saturday :rock

good luck with the Pinewood Derby! I rmember when i used to do those lol
-
Good luck in the derby. I always had a blast, and came in in the top 3 till they weighed the cars. If you drill a hole in the bottom of it you can melt lead fishing weights and pour them into the hole. File and sand them down and Repaint the spot. The car is beautiful though, good luck.
-
Tungsten (1.7 times as dense as lead) :D
As the car sits... 4.975 oz.
Center mass is 1.375" in front of rear axle :bolt:
-
Car looks sweet, hope it runs well.
Does someone have a label maker?

Denis Didrot: "Men will never be free until the last king is strangled with the entrails of the last preist."
But there is argument that it is attributed to:
Jean Meslier: "I would like — and this would be the last and most ardent of my wishes — I would like the last of the kings to be strangled by the guts of the last priest".
I have looked extensively for Thomas Jefferson requoting Denis Didrot but, Jefferson in all of his quotes has never reduced himslef to imagery of the french pre-revolutionairy style combining the extreams of vulgarity and violence wraped in aitheism.

Very cool VM, good luck with the Derby. My son was first in his den, and 5th overall in the pack last year.
I came in first as a kid, dad drilled out an area in the bottom, and added a couple of semi-wadcutters. That little thing flew like a bullet :D

The best I got was 3rd place and that was with a Dragster. :lol
-
i had a pretty good one as a kid, made it to regionals. Do the melted lead but kepp it at max wieght. we used graphite on the wheels... im sure theres better lubes out there now!
-
Hehe. I still have my Pinewood Derby that was Runner-Up in the State of Mich. My pop, Grandpa and I spent a weekend building it. I used graphite and it was Max. Weight, which is what you want. We had to have the wood drilled as well. I'll post up a picture.
-
You guys know more than I do about this, but why make it look like a car at all? Wouldn't a bullet shape would fly better?

Looks like that wood is a wiinner :neener:

Make a plug in the nose, then load the bugger with some lead weight. <Evil Grim>

Actually Tungsten weight :D
And the weight goes in the back. Balance point of car is ~1" in front of rear axle. The ramp transitions into a flat dor the last 6'.
Remember Sir Issac's first law ...... (law of inertia)
An object at rest will remain at rest unless acted on by an unbalanced force. An object in motion continues in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
In this situation, the weight in the front would be the unbalanced force fighting the transition from descent angle to horizontal (flat) trajectory. If it's more to the back, it gives a "push" at the transition.
Science..... it works, biatches :D
3.875 seconds :aok

Balance it so it can ride on 3 wheels 2 rear 1 front camber the front and seat the tires to ride on their inside edge of both. Make it track straight. drill a hole underneath and when it comes to weigh in time drop some lead shot in the hole till u get exact weight. dab a little ZAP(superglue for building R/C airplanes) spray 1 shot of excelerator(Kicker) for Zap to cure. Presto you have exact weight at weigh in time on their scale at their calibration.
FYI My sons took 4th and 5th in San Diego county finals. They beat 54 other cars to get there. The final race finished with less than 1 car length separating all 7 cars.
Great time

Sweet car man, I hope your son places well. :aok

I hope the accuracy of your research eclipses that of your spelling because the simplicity of the forum spell-check button (and the on-the-fly spell-check of most browsers) has eluded you quite successfully.
It has, in fact, passed by you at warp speed.
In any case, thanks for pissing on a thread that I started about the fun and bonding experience that I had with my son this week. :aok
Carry on.

Yeah wow, the spelling is horrendous, my quote box is just full of red underlined words right now, spell check is your friend :aok.
Also what the hell does any of that have to do with anything in this thread, I mean did I miss something, did you go to post a reply and have a stroke and just started typing nonsense?

I remember the Pinewood Derby in Scouts. It was pretty hilarious in a sad way.
10 kids that worked on their own cars, from top to bottom. Sanded. Painted. Balanced. Loved.
Trumped by three kids who had Daddy "help" build their cars. 1st, 2nd, 3rd.
-
He worked plenty, last year.

I'll post another after this year :)

That would be awesome. If I had more room in my car, I'd be half tempted to brew up another batch and share it. I'll bring a glass to sample yours.

I remember those days, good bonding time with dad. Good luck!

Awesome racer! If you see a "Batman" in the race, put him in the wall fast! He cheats! :lol
On a serious note: That a great way to bond with your kid. And he's learning things that will stay with him for life. Good dad skills ya got Von! :aok

How'd he do?

Did you put on a few coats of polyurethane and sand it smooth? Its hard to tell in the picture but it looks like you could get some more aerodynamic qualities out of it if you do over the paint.
Looks great and hope you have fun with your Son. Good times. :rock

Basecoat/clearcoat. About 5 coats of clear. We were going to compound and wax it, but there wasn't enough time for the lacquer to harden properly (before the race)
Also had to drill out the bottom to make weight (rather drill out than add, as the car is already balanced) so there is a band-aid on the bottom :)
Got 1st in his den, 2nd overall in the pack.
Districts are in March.

Nice job guys! Cool looking car. :aok

WTG on the win. Did the car get scratched up in the race?
-
Not too much
-
Can it take off on a treadmill?
-
On the next run put a little graphite powder on the axles, and be sure to de bur the wheels.

Can only lube once. Right before the race starts, and that's it.....
Axles, and wheels were trued.
He only missed 1st place by .007 seconds
1st place winner was a Hershey bar :noid
