Had a new little girl fall into our laps this past week. We've got two older pit bulls already, but one has a terminal illness, so we thought it might be a good idea to go ahead and get this pup, so that the oldest isn't impacted too hard when Chico does die. She's a sweet little girl.

Crappy camera phone pics I know, sorry about the quality. I need to get a real digital camera.
Also, please no negative pit bull comments, there's been plenty of that ignorance spread around already. I'm a competent, dedicated and responsible dog owner and I raise calm balanced and behaved dogs.
Thanks for looking.

Grats! I'm sorry to hear about Chico. I hope his passing is easy. I had lost a Golden Retriever due to Hip Displacia, and we had gotten a youger pup (Lab/Border Collie mix) much the same way. Buddy taught Frankie everything he knew (including watch out for Murry, our 4 pund mutt with the 400 pound attitude)

Nice puppy , well he run deer ? lol J/K .

That sir deserves a <Salute> :salute ...the key to owning any pets, dedication and responsibility.
Looks like that pup will be a nice addition to the family.
-
Mad,
Nice pup, good to see it raised around children as it should be.
Actually your doing a very good thing for your other dog{s} the addition of a new pack member can do wonders for an old an sick dog, least of all make it's passing easier for any others.
You'll never here any negitive comments from me on any dog, except to the owners, all dogs are the same at the beginning. It's what and how the owner raises them that can mess any dog up.
I'm just glad to see a pup go to a good home and not end up in the pound!

We had a long haired shepperd named Chico when I was a kid. Man seeing that name brings back some memories.
I am not going to say anything negative about pitbulls, just to say that when she gets a bit older be careful with her around other dogs. Pits can be the greatest animals around humans but go completely beserk around other dogs.
Cute though..love the eye patch.
-
My Dog is 14yrs old. We know the time is near and we know all of us will be crushed when he goes. :cry
-
Thanks guys! Ironically Chico is only a year old at this point, he was about 6 months when we got him from the pound, he won't live to see two years old however, unfortunately. I wish it were the case that we were bringing Sadie in to be part of the pack for an old dog. Cadence, the oldest is only 5 right now, still in his prime.
Curval, was your Chico named after the Marx brother? My first dog that I got when I moved out on my own, my wonderful Rottweiler was named Groucho. I'm a big Marx brothers fan. My second rott, that I got when Groucho finally passed I named Chesty, after Chesty Puller. He was Cadence's best friend, and mine too. He woke me up when my apartment burned a few years back, making sure that we got out safely. He went with me everywhere. He was my best friend in the world, through my bad divorce and losing everything in the fire and all. Somehow over the summer he and Cadence got out of the back yard, which had never happened before, and Chesty was hit by a car and killed. Saddest day of my life. Cadence fell into such a deep depression, much like me, that we got Chico to be his companion, and once they bonded, they've been close ever since. Chico did wonders for Cadence. And me too.
Also, Cadence and Chico are both pitbulls, they get along beautifully. I take them with me to play disc golf and to the Petsmart and to parks and all that. They meet other dogs and children all the time and are perfect calm balanced gentlemen. A while back at the park a kid asked if he could pet Cadence and then began sticking his hands and fingers into Cadence's mouth a second later. Cadence patiently put up with it while we told him not to do that but to pet him on his chest and neck instead. I believe in raising ambassadors to those two breeds, that are often misunderstood and get an undeserved bad rap. My dogs are socialized and obedient and aren't a danger to the public or other dogs. It's all in raising them right, socializing them and having the right bearing and demeanor. You've got to be the leader and they take their cues from you.
Raider, I'm sorry to hear that about your dog, I know it'll be tough when the time comes. All you can do is to love and care for him and not let him suffer. There's just no easy way about it.

"Curval, was your Chico named after the Marx brother? "
Nope...it means "little boy" in Spanish. My sister named him. I always claimed we named him after the TV show Chico and The Man...but I lied. ;-)

Ahhh, see, even though I grew up about an hour south of Houston, and even though my stepmom is a second generation Mexican American, my Spanish is woefully inadequate. I never really learned it or picked up all that much of it somehow. I can only read or understand little bits and pieces and there is much much I don't know. For instance, I had no idea at all that Chico means little boy.
I still love the Marx brothers though! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-zR2pM_S5U http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYxgjJK7kD0

Mad,
I've raised bulls for 30 years or so,had as many as 4 house dogs at a time. These days I have a 2 dog limit, city bylaw. I've never once had an incedent with my dogs as I agree "it's how you raise them"
That said once a stray dog entered my yard........Unfortunately I had to carry the dog home to it's owner.
:salute
-
Yeah they do get a bad rap, and I try to combat that image by taking my guys out in public and letting people and dogs meet them. People are shocked when they ask what kind of a dog they are, as their dog meets mine, or as they pet one of my guys, and I tell them pit bull.
That sucks about the stray dog getting into your yard, but then, it is your dog's territory. To my way of thinking, that's part of the dogs job in the agreement, to protect his property and people. We're responsible for them and to them and they're responsible to us. It's a two way street really, the only difference is that the dogs always live up to their side of the bargain.

Good for you Mad,these dogs need all the good PR they can get.
Yes too bad for the stray, the thing is I had warned it's owner not to let it roam, there was a spot where it could get into my yard but couldn't get out. The owner just wouldnt listen and said he'd do as he pleases with his dog.
I wasnt about to get in the middle of the 2 dogs until they settled down,I then took the dog home and told the owner he should take it to the vet. He failed to do this for 2 days then approached me about the vet bill..... I laughed and said sue me......
Some people just shouldnt be allowed to own pets!

Some people just shouldnt be allowed to own pets!
Too true man, and unfortunately lots of them do. It's always the pets that end up having to pay the price too.
Unbelievably irresponsible of him to just let his dog roam the neighborhood too. Just absolutely crazy and dangerous and unhealthy and uncaring to boot. Guy like that should have his bellybutton removed. It's so sad too because even if you don't have a natural affinity for the dogs, the information on how to raise them properly and how to relate to them and read their body language is all out there and easy to find. Why would you have a dog and just not know or care how to raise and care for it. You'd be better off just to not have one, and you'd save a bunch of money too. Such a shame.
But then, there are good dog owners out there too. This very thread has fed my optimism, thanks Morfiend!

I just inhereted a 3 year Black Pure breed German shepard. He is a great dog so far only had him for 2 days, but he has more toys chew things, and things like that than his former owners ever gave him, with all of those he carries a stick around, and chews it. But he will fetch, over and over ,and over. HE is farely well behaved but I am working on him. Congrats on the new puppy. I hope you enjoy him as much as I am enjoying my new dog.

awwwwwwww...she looks like she could be stuka's sister! she is adorable madda! glad she has a good home.
as far as negative comments, you will get them, some people are just automatically idiots. i luv my 2 pits, stuka and tank are the coolest dogs ever and love people. i agree with you when u say its how u raise them. dont blame the breed blame the owner, if the owner is an idiot, then the dog will be a very reflection of that.
keep postin pics of her so we can watch her grow up! i will take some more pics of stuka and tank soon so yall can see them.... :salute

Have a good friend who raises Minpins, some of the toughest 8 pounders I've ever met! :rofl :rofl
Your so right they do think they're 100lbers,but can be the sweetest family pets.Afterall their job was to kill rats, some almost as big as they are....takes quite a dog to do that.

I'm on the same page with you guys. They give me so much that I could never begin to pay them back. I've only been without a dog briefly in my adult life, and that whole time I felt like something was missing.

You know , thinking back now . I have allway's had a dog or dog's and allway's will .. I can not remember not having one ...My squirrel dog had been lost for the last two day's and showed up last night at my nabor's house . I could not even sleep (of fly) thinking of that dog ... :salute

i agree with yall, i can honestly say though, i have had from feb 20th 2007 to may 2009 without a dog of my own, this was due to losing the coolest dog i ever had to the dog food recall. he was samoid chow and husky, big white furball and the coolest dog ever. i miss him every day and have many pictures of him that i look at ever day. he will always be missed. stuka has shown me what i have been missing out on though, he has brought alot of joy to my life and im never alone. he might take up the whole bed or couch or even squish the hell out of me when he sits on my lap but i enjoy it. hes such a cool dog and im very much glad that i got him when i did :)

Here's my pup. She's a Pug-A-Poo (quarter pug, three-quarter toy poodle). Got her at 9 weeks old.
Diagnosed with Discoid Lupus at 3 months.
Dermatologist said antibiotics ($70 a month) three times a day for life to make it bearable.
Did research, found out practically 100% caused by food alergy.
Took her of the pills after 3 weeks. Five months and three dog foods later, determined was rice and wheat gluten.
She just turned three in December and you cannot tell she had a bald face, head and tail. WTF do doctors know...
She's a happy, well-balanced, energetic bundle of joy.

What do you feed her? Just curious because I feed my guys grain free food too, not due to any allergies, just because I believe in feeding the best quality stuff I can. I have to feed Chico the Hills prescription food for kidney disease, but the rest eat Evo Red Meat grain free. I'm glad you were able to get her problem worked out.

About six months ago, we discovered Woody's Pet Food Deli (http://www.woodyspetdeli.com/). They make all-natural, whole food (bones and organs), cooked or raw. Stuff like rabbit, turkey, chicken, lamb, etc. It's amazing that she eats the same quantity as brand-name off-the-shelf dry food, but poops much much less. There are no fillers or other junk in the food, so almost all of it gets digested and absorbed with very little waste. It's funny, the staff says many people come back wondering and asking about if their dog is constipated because of the lack of huge, frequent piles to clean up. :lol
We haven't found anything she doesn't like, but her two favorites seem to be lamb and rabbit. I know she'd love the ultra-fresh rabbit from the yard - she sure loves to try to catch them, anyway... :D

Dot, have you seen this site http://www.prey4pets.com/servlet/StoreFront ? I'd been looking at it considering getting meat and meaty bones to supplement my dog's diet, they have bunches of good stuff available, rabbit and quail and chicken and buffalo and like that. I've bookmarked that woody's site and will be reading it closely soon. Thanks for the link.

Greens, rottweilers are my favorite dogs. I've had two and both were fantastic. My latest one, Chesty, was killed this summer at only 4 years old. He was only just hitting his prime and was an absolutely fantastic dog. I still miss him every day.
I've put a deposit down on a new rott, which I'll get as soon as he's born. Just as soon as the breeder has a good one picked out for me I'll be all over him. I almost can't wait, but my new little girl Sadie will keep me busy until then I'm sure.

Hey, he looks great for a 9 year old! Little gray in the muzzle, but then so am I these days. He looks a lot like Cadence, but a bit darker, Cadence is somewhat more blond. Fine looking dog!
What's he weigh?
-
SPK,
Jock looks alot like a Staffordshire Bull Terrier or staffy as they are commonly called.
I have a pair of staffy's I downsized from English Bullterriers around 10 years ago and found the Staffy to be about the perfect size for me.
Unfortunately they have passed a law that prohibits the ownership of most of these types of dogs the 1's I have now will be my last.
I'm looking into the Bullterriers again as they are exempt for the law and I'm looking into a mini Bullterrier. They are roughly the same size as the staffy 14 inchs 35 lbs.
I bet Jock's a real character,I now both mine are,if you dont pay enough attention to them they find away to get your attention...... :lol :lol :lol
My first staffy,Saddie was the same colour as Jock,he reminds me of her alot,I had to put her down as she developed epilepsy and suffered Grand mal seizures.
PS: Dot great find on the food allergy, most skin problems stem from food issues,a teaspoon of cornoil{must be cornoil} can do wonders for the skin too.
:salute
-
SPK,
:salute
Aye...staffie he is....character he is also.....Definitely an attention seeker...and jealous....when I got together with my lady he was 6 and he would plonk himself between her and myself all the time...he's all good now but man that was classic... great with the family too...my daughter and jock are the same age....no stranger can get close to her without him being within striking distance... I remember one of the first times I saw this we were at the beach...he would run about with his stick (well branch) bringing it to me to throw....and you could see him scanning the beach...watching people and when they were getting close he would just run in a circle around her till they had passed his safe distance.
sweet dogs..very loyal
-
Yes indeed SKP,they are quite the breed!
I showed Jock to my wife and she was all teary eyed,Jock look so much like her Saddie.
:salute
-
Just out of curiosity, are those Staffordshire terriers somehow different than the American Staffordshire terriers, or is that the same breed with a slightly different name?
-
The truth is yes and no,the Staffy or staffordshire bull terrier is the fore runner to the American Staffordshire Terrier/ APBT both of which were bred from the original Staffies.
Now the Staffy was considered a "purebred" until 1935 when they wrote the standard for the breed.
That said,Staffies had been bred for over 100 years before the standard was wrote, this obviously was done because of the fact that dogfighting had become illegal and they needed a reason to continue to breed the dogs. So "purebred" means dog shows and a reason was made!
Long before this though,in the late 1800 many english and Irish immigrants came to America and brought with them their fighting dogs, mostly of the Staffy type, but many other breeds too.Soon these dog became popular and bred to slightly different sizes, the American dogs got slightly larger than what was found back home in England.
So over the last 100 years or so the two dogs started to differ greatly and were named differently depending on who was registering the dogs. The AKC refuses to recognize the APBT as a breed but recognizes the AmStaf, both are basically the same dog just bred to a slightly different standard and purpose.
Ok so now I wrote a book......LOL but the answer is still yes and no!!
:salute
-
I think way back when, they are from the same breeding...however American breeders crossed breeds...(I think bull dog) to come up with what is now known as an American staffordshire...they are a bit taller and longer.
oops ..I was a little slow.
-
Gotcha, thanks guys, makes sense.
My new little puppy has papers, just not AKC papers. She's registered through American Dog Breeders Assoc. Her parents are competitive pulling dogs, so they've got a good pedigree. I always thought it was odd that the AKC would have the Staffordshire, but not the Pitt. At any rate, I love them and they're great dogs. I'm going to get a new digicam soon so I'll post good pics of Cadence and Chico (the sick one) and Sadie the beautiful new pup. Cadence is a bit chubby for the winter, but man, that dog is built like the proverbial brick souphouse. I think his winter weight is probably about 75 pounds, and you can still see his ribs a little and the striations in his legs. Stout I say!

great pics madda! i will try to get some pics of my boys playin tug o war! they are so funny! sometime tank gets lazy and just lays down and lets stuka pull him around! its hella funny to watch!
spk, jock looks like a very happy puppy dog!! hes very pretty!! looks like he could knock u down if u dont pet him on time! stuka and tank was running thru my house (i have big house with lot of open space) and my daughter just so happened to be standing in their line of running because they knocked her feet out from under her (my daughter is almost as tall as me and is 14) and she came down hurting her elbow for a minute. shes okay had a bruise on her elbow but the dogs never even flinched, it never bothered them that they had just blasted her like that! it was crazy, so now we stop them from running thru the house, its hard to take them outside right now for too long cuz its so cold and my stuka freezes! he has to cover up with a blanket when he comes in from the cold!!
here is my cold stuka puppy!! no...hes NOT spoiled!! :)

Rotties are simply awesome. These are my two 10 year old girlz. Had em since pups, and dunno what I'd do without em.

i know the feeling jager,
when i have stuka and tank out and about, ppl steer clear of my car or us. when stuka was 3 months old, we was on the way to dayton, i had to stop at all the rest area's so he could go potty. this one rest area had couple buses full of kids. i was standing there waiting for my kids to come out and had stuka on his leash when a camp director lady walked up and asked to pet him. i told her of course! so bunch of kids came running over and of course stuka was luving the attention! then after petting him and talking to me for bout 5 minutes, she then asked "what kind of dog is he" when i told her he was pitbull/bull mastiff mix, it was almost like they thought he had the plague and she told them kids in a hurry to go back over with the rest of the kids and she left with them making sure they did exactly that.
makes me sooooooooo angry when people just assume the breed or the way they look that they are aggressive. :furious

As long as the dog just isn't nuts, a balanced dog is healthy, happy, and safe one. No more prejudice! We've done it for people; so the least we can do is provide equality to man's best friend.

Ya can't see them in the pics very well, but both of them do have spiked collars.

I made that mistake with one like that, but made of metal. It was like hanging around a 120lb porcupine that really liked to jump on you. In hindsight, I probably should've gone with the less sharp kind.

Betty, that exact same thing happens to me all the time when I'm out with my guys. People will be petting and loving all over them, and then ask what kind of dog they are. Then it's stand up and back away. Amusing to me, but it irritates a bit nonetheless. I can't help but think however that every time that happens, a small seed gets planted. Like every one of those people can and will later think back on the time they met a pitbull and petted him and he was a very sweet and friendly dog, not at all like they show on the news. I like to think that I'm doing good work for the breed that way. Otherwise, I'd just have to be depressed and give up.

Good looking dog Madd and Betty. Madd, a few of us are going to have a beer here in town in a about a month. You interested?
I got this pup a couple years ago. He use to be scared of the lake. I threw him in a few times, now he's brave.

Yeah I'm interested, shoot me a pm telling me when and where and I'll be there for sure.
Is that some kind of a wirehair terrier mix maybe?

Yowza, if those are your guys, you'd better keep away from water Chappy!
Seriously though, nice little guys, Boston terriers?
Was that a halloween pic then I guess?

yes boston terriers.
Amazing what some dogs will go through for a hotdog lol.

I'm not sure, I adopted him. He sure fits the bill for an Irish Terrier, but he's about 15 pounds heavy. His hair feels like a wire brush. He might have some Airedale.
I'll pm you about the beer.

I think that the Airdale are the biggest of the wire hair type of terriers, so it sort of fits. I'm not really positive on that though, I'm not terribly clear on the group there. They all seem so similar to me that they run together.
Absolutely pm me about the beer, sounds great.

I don't know if they make outfits big enough Betty. They'd probably be fairly miffed though if I had to make a guess. Ever seen a pitbull pout? I have, it's not pretty.

Chap, such nice needlework. My grandmother always had bostons when I was growing up. The one named 'babe' was a loose cannon.

I found this site from 1881 and his name back then was Playboy. Plus the pics of the dogs looking happy with mustard gas exposure. Looked just like my dog. http://www.anluan.net/page4.asp

omg madda! a pouting pitbull is awful! stuka pouts sometimes when i plan to be gone longer than normal and he is unable to go with me. he knows once i grab my car keys that WE'RE going "bye bye". but when i grab them and then make him sit and stay while i walk out of the house, he'll run over to the window and i can see him while backing out my driveway and he is pouting bad! makes me feel awful but sometimes he has to stay home hehe
-
I used to love going through drive thrus with Chesty in the back seat. He would stick his head out as the people leaned to the car to give me my junkfood and scare the daylights out of them 9 times out of 10. It was delightful.
He used to sit in the back seat and rest his head on my shoulder as I drove. I miss that dog.

Well, there's always the next dog! Maybe he/she will do something just as loveable and adorable. It's a shame that dogs live such short lives, though.

jager where u get ur beautiful babies. I want one. whered you get them, my dog is getting old bigtime he will pass within couple months trying to get my kids to realize that their dog will die someday. tough alright. jager i wanna buy one PM me and see if i can buy a rott from same breed.

Chappy,
Cool I get it the flying monkeys from the Wizzard of Oz.... nice! What a terrier wont do.
Rash,
I think your right,Irish terrier or some mix of similar types. He nose looks abit like at scottish terriers so thats why I think so mix. As for Airedale, definitly not, they're tall dogs and run around 40 lbs, they almost always are found as black and tan.The Irish terrier is a smaller cousin to the airedale and are usually red or tan in colour.
Really doesnt matter, all terriers are much alike and IMHO are the best group of dogs to have as pets.

He's red as they come and his hair is like rusty wire and weights about 45 pounds. Everyone that sees him, has to touch his hair. The only color difference is the dime sized white spot between his shoulders (under his neck).
The back yard is his too patrol. The weirdest thing he brought to the back door was a bat, not sure where he ran into a bat. He must of found it in the shed or hanging from one of the pine trees? He's like most terriers, he has a knack for hunting down and killing varmints, and loves to be around people. He really loves to see my 6 year old nephew, they seem like old friends.

Rash,
http://www.airedaleterrier.ca/about-airedales/index.html
This link clearly shows what an airedale looks like,I was alittle off on the weight, more like 45 to 60 lbs.If you check the link you'll see the dog is quite tall and black and tan,the standard calls for 23 inches at the shoulder.
Your dog is much more like an Irish terrier!
here a link that shows a dog much like yours!
http://www.canadogs.com/BreedIrishTerrier.htm
Yes my staffies are quite the hunters too, they amaze me by catching birds.I try to warn the birds before letting them out but it daoesn't always work, then there's the suicidal squirrels that hang around!............. :devil
Love them or hate them terriers are about the most adaptable dogs around, they're more than happy to live on a boat, provided their owner is nearby to enjoy life with them.

Dogs are strange like that. When I got my mutt she was terrified of the water until one day I picked her up and jumped in my pool with her in my arms. After that I couldn't keep her out of the pool.

Strange, I've never had a dog that liked to go into the water at all. I've had them all at my parent's in ground pool, but they just won't go in willingly. If I put them in, they just head straight for the stairs. Maybe it would be different at the lake, I don't know.

All this talk about the water...I couldn't resist...I was told staffies didn't like the water...I don't think jock actually knows he's a dog so maybe that is why he loves it so much..that and the fact there is a ball...balll...balllllllll... the dog goes nuts for balls and buckets

Great pics Tongs! Looks like a great time for him. I couldn't play with Chesty with a basketball for that reason, he's pop them right off. I might have to try using a ball to get my guys in the water this summer. Could be great fun. Thanks for posting those!

Woke up this morning with one of my Rotts having bloody diarrhea. Vet said to watch her for 24 hrs and bring her in if there's any change for the worse. Scary as hell. Have any of you had an experience like this with one of your dogs? Only thing that I can think happened was that I had to change her food for a day. She's never had an issue with that though.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

How old is the dog?
I had a dog that had Parvo that did that. He passed away, but he was still a puppy.

Yeah Jager, you need to keep a CLOSE eye on her. My parent's evil dog that hated all of us died about 8 years ago from something like that. We were playing around in the house, and then all of a sudden the whole house started to smell like death, I went to see where the dog was, and there was a huge blotch of bloody diarrhea. My parents took her to the vet the next day and she had to be put to rest, but that dog was 18 or 20 years old, so that may have been one of the deciding factors.
-
She's 10 yrs old. She had parvo as a pup but got over it. Vet said she couldn't get it again. She's not acting sick, and she's drinking water just fine. On the vet's reccomendation I took away her food for today. She's still passing some blood, but nothing like this morning. I'm wondering if a rawhide treat didn't cause a cut in her lower intestine, hence inflammation and the diarrhea. The blood is really bright red, indicating that the issue is in the lower part of the GI tract. I'm keeping a real close eye on her today, and if anything changes I'll be driving 100 mph to the emergency vet. Oddly enough, when I just took her out, she wanted to play the snowball game (when I throw snowballs in the air and she runs to catch them). So she's still as active as normal. I'm (optimistically) taking that as a good sign.

Ruler, that kinda sounds like she had some sort of necrotic infection (hence the death smell). I'm no vet though.

Jager....is she going to the toilet (stool) without looking constipated?.....I ask this because, Jock has this issue with swallowing bones whole...twice he has done this. He now only gets huge canon bones....He would play fine but when he was just walking about he would be slightly hunched in his Hind quarter...when he tried to go toilet he would struggle as if constipated and pass fluid/blood. this was obviously due to the bone getting stuck in the line and being too big to pass but with his attempts it would try and get more and more embedded into his lining causing cuts and bleeding. It required surgery to remove one, and the other was lots of munched up shards which when they relaxed him they were able to remove without invasive surgery. Your thought about the rawhide bone could be correct...those should breakdown after a little bit or at least soften to allow it to pass.....just keep an eye and perhaps an X-ray..... Hope you find a solution...it is a horrible feeling not knowing how to fix the pain of your pet
Lesson I learned,, was never give a dog cooked bones....they break into slivers of vet bills....
-
I have a question, what does death smell like? And how do you know the first time that you smell it?

I meant smelled like death as in the turd, it stunk up the whole house and was so potent it would gag you.

I am no vet either, but I'd put my money on what Tongs is saying here. I think that's your most likely culprit. That or perhaps a piece of wood or something like that which has perhaps been chewed up.
-
AA,
I'd restrict food, not water and see if it clears up.If it persists I'd take the dog to be Xrayed to see if the dog has a blockage or some other foreign object stuck in the GI tract.
Dog will eat almost anything, getting into the garbage can be deadly, please dont feed bones to any dog.The bones can splinter and cause all kinds of life threatening conditions.
Also,be carefull with your choice of toys, some can splinter too, this has the same effect as a bone chip! On top off all this just ordinary household objects can also be a danger, never leave a dog unsupervised in a house,I've use cages to house my dogs and highly recommend you "cage train" you dog.
So hopefully this problem your dog is having will pass, once you resume feeding try something easy like rice,a cup or too then see if all goes well,if not take the dog to be checked and xrayed if needed.

She's never had a real bone of any kind. She does look like she's trying to force something when she's going to the "dogroom" though. I've got an appt. with the vet first thing in the morning. Hopefully it's nothing, but I'm going to stay up all night to keep an eye on her just in case. There's no way I'm letting my girl go without doing all I can. If any of you other dog owners would be willing to send a prayer up, I'd really appreciate it. I'm sure my pup would too.

Maybe try a new forum thread for this question...I know ,I know it was started here but that is not what this thread is about..it is more to do with man's friend...
The smell of death is not really something that can be easily explained...it is more something you experience...due to humans life cycle you will at some stage understand this 'smell of death' perhaps a google search...this will probably only land you a scientific explanation but I'm afaid they don't have a scratch and sniff card for this type of thing..
And to Jager...thoughts for you and your pup...

Well, after a full run of tests (all coming back normal) and x-rays, the doc diagnosed her with Hemorragic Gastroenteritis (HGE). She's hospitalized and taking IV fluids/antibiotics/anti-nausea meds. Luckily, with supportive care the prognosis is good for a full recovery. She'll probably be in the hospital for a couple of days, but it could've been much worse. I really appreciate all of your thoughts and prayers, it's been a rough couple of days.

AA,
Good news for sure, did the vet give a cause? Did they make suggestions to avoide a reocurance?
There's plenty a dog owner can do to prevent things from happening to our dogs, look what I'madot did to cure his dogs skin condition, simply finding the "right" food for your dog can make all the difference in the world.
I'm hoping for a speedy recovery AA,I know vet bills can pile up rather high!

Oddly enough, there's no known cause for HGE. Also, chances of a recurrance are very slim. There's also no test for it other than ruling everything else out. Seemed kinda weird when the vet told me, but all of the info I can find online echoes what she said. They looked everywhere for a cause.... Kidneys, liver, CBC, fecal swab, x-rays on her gut, thyroid, etc. At least after this is over I'll know that she's in really good shape. My other Rottie looked all over the house for her sister when I got back from the vet, now she's acting really depressed and won't leave whatever room that I'm in. I feel sorry for the girl.

Man I'm sure glad it wasn't anything more serious. I know how it feels to suddenly lose one. Just think how happy they'll both be when they get reunited.

Hey thanks Hap. Oddly enough, just the other day my girlfriend got onto Sadie about something and she put her paw over her eye just like Petey. We both erupted into laughter.
I'm finding that puppies are so much easier to raise when you have adult dogs to help show them the way. She's the sweetest little girl, and since she comes from a long line of champion pulling dogs, even at 10 weeks she's already getting serious muscles in her legs. It's great to see her grow every day.
We just got a new digital camera yesterday, so I'll be putting some more (and good quality this time) pics up in the coming days. Just as soon as we get a better handle on how to properly use that camera.

I wouldnt use kevlar or carbonfiber with a staffy, they could splinter, the best toys I've found are made by "kong" they make all kinds of hard rubber toys that last a fair length of time.
Another option is a small trailer tire, just be carefull of any steel belts that may erupt, motorcycle tires work well too.

i have bought kong toys for stuka and tank and i can honestly say only a couple of them have proven to be tough enough for my boys. I buy them the like 3' tug of war ropes also and they will mangle them just from playin with them in no time at all. Once I see any of the toys becoming a hazard to them i throw them away. at the local pet supply store, they have these tug o' war toys that are not made of string but of some material that is very strong. almost feels like a carhart material. anyways, my boys have yet to hurt this toy. they love to play tug o war but till now i was unable to find anything that will hold up to them. i did find a cool 10" tire it is so cute! it has lil puppy paw prints on it and its very think rubber, stuka and tank love it! they play together with all their toys. its so funny to see them both latched on to this tire and playing together with it. they even toss it up on the air. im scared one of these days they will toss it and it will break my TV or other things around the house hehe. i can't wait till summer so they can go outside and run off their energy!

WOOT! I get to pick Tira up from the vet this afternoon! :rock The doc did tell me this morning that the vet techs have really gotten attached to her during her stay, and would be glad to take her home (No way, Jose). Apparently Tira's been making friends. :D

awsome to hear jager!!!! im sure she will me happy to go back home :rock

Great stuff AA,when the vet tech's want your dog you know you have a good 1. :aok
I usually buy Kong Balls... :lol.... the largest I can find, the reason I suggest them is the rubber passes easily through the dogs system.Nyla[sp] bones on the other hand while tough and longlasting can cause problems in dogs with strong jaws.
I've had good luck with the tires that Betty mentioned, called either paws or tirebitters,in the large sizes. They dont seem to last as long as the kong's do but every dog is different. If you can find a good cottonlike rope, marine stores are best place to find it,just buy 5 to 10 feet of 1 inch rope and cut to length and tie a knot in it.Hours of fun at next to no cost....
:salute

We got a little Kong for my 7lb Shih-tzu, that thing will keep her entertained for hours! I found a big one for her, but Im not sure if we threw it out or gave it to my aunts retriever. I'd like to see her tackle that thing!
Glad your pup came through Jager!

Couple of newer pics with the digital camera. Still not great, we need some work learning the camera and tricking the dogs into posing where we can get a good shot of them. They seem to always look away just as the shutter clicks, or the pic comes out a bit blurry or off center or whatever. Still, lots better than camera phone pictures. We're still trying to get some good shots of Sadie looking as cute as she is in real life.

Lots of cool stories and handsome canines. The pit poem made me a little misty-eyed (shhhh, don't tell my squaddies).
Maddafinga, I took the liberty (and about 10 minutes with Photoshop) to jazz up the pic of Chico. Hope you don't mind...it's a handsome beast, and the over-exposure and "dog eyes" made my eyes hurt. ;) One thing that really helps with digital pix is to get no closer than about 4-5 feet (6-8 feet better, depending on the camera and flash). Use the zoom to compose the shot. Less washout, and the "dog eyes" are easier to fix.

That looks a lot better man, thanks!
Chico really is a good looking dog, I just wish I could get some meat on him, he simply won't put on any weight due to his sickness. He's a real sweetheart too, it sucks that he's dying. I really appreciate you touching that up man.

What do you guys think that Chico ( and the rest of the dogs mentioned that are still alive ) read this? I think that one of them would break down and cry at the poem, I can tell you that it touched my soul for sure. Thanks for all of the pictures guys, keep sending 'em up here! (and to keep the ball rolling)
