I'm guessing a lot of non-skinners will want to take up the art of skinning, now that all those colorful WW1 skins are possible.

Power to them, if they pull it off! They are welcome in the skinning community!

However, as far as multiple submissions of the same red baron skin, we may get an influx of 5 or so sudden submissions! I'd say leave it up to HTC to decide which goes in game, based on the quality and accuracy of the skin (i.e. the one that looks like it was created with MS paint and a paint bucket tool probably won't make it)

If thats supposed to be 425/17 (the one he died in), the national insignia on the wings are wrong.

I cannot get a closer zoom, and thats based off of a picture. he had many planes. no two pictures of his planes are alike as far as maerkings arwe concerned

I'd trust Norman and Greg (and Iain Wyllie), they know their stuff.

And, AFAIK, he only flew three Tripes in combat that were actually 'his' (including the F.1), and 425/17 was the only one that can be verified as completely red. The other two were just red trimmed over the usual streaky green-gray.

He cant zoom in because then we'll see that there is no detailing on the plane. Looks like he just went into MS paint and painted everything red.

That was an Aces High screenshot.  You can zoom in a lot more than that before you hit Alt+S.

The limitations that you impose on Gimp have no bearing on that screenshot.

Out of curiosity, how DID you do any detailing if you couldn't zoom in?  Aren't the two (creating detail & having a detailed view) interdependent?

The pile gets deeper............    :noid

I find it unlikely that someone who has managed to jump through the hoops of d/l a default skin to the end result of flying it in offline moe (and it actually showing up) cannot figure out how to zoom in, but here goes

(quoting from memory because I am at work)

Spawn on runway

Press F3 (External View)

Press F8 (pan Mode)

[ and ] to  zoom in and out

Carry on...............

Of course all the newb skinners would get their panties in a bunch, competing for the "Red Baron" skin. I hope HTC accepts the skin from someone who is more knowledgeable and experienced. It would be a shame to see a skin misrepresented in AH.
Title: Re: Foker DR I Skin
Post by: Krusty on March 17, 2010, 09:21:11 AM
True, but on the other hand, it would be a shame for HTC to deny a "new" skinner's submission in favor of a "veteran" skinners if the skin is halfway decent. Really depends on the skin, not the name of its creator, is what I hope.

I would imagine that this is what we are trying to determine......

He now knows how to get a better screenie and post it.

The next step is to put that knowledge to practical use and exhibit a closer look at what has been done..........
Title: Re: Foker DR I Skin
Post by: Gr8pape on March 17, 2010, 05:14:26 PM
It shouldn't matter who created the skin, who cares if a newb made it, what matters is who's skin is most accurate, that is what should matter. Just because it is a persons first try, just because someone a rep as a good skinner, if the newb's skin is better then let the newb get the post. I haven't even tried to skin a plane but if/when I do just because it is my first try that should disqualify it? Just doesn't seem right to me.
Title: Re: Foker DR I Skin
Post by: Krusty on March 17, 2010, 11:15:05 PM
Not to worry gr8. We're generally very helpful and supportive of new skinners, and try to give them the feedback they need when starting out.

The only problem is whether or not it's a serious attempt, and the brief span it took to create and submit it, well let's just say we could have helped a lot, bypassed a lot of pitfalls, and maybe avoided a "first submission rejection" that many of us have already experienced first-hand.

For now I think it's safe to say the "red baron" skin is still up for grabs. Can we tone back the hostility *just* a bit? Please?

Oooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhh man.

Just to let you know, skinning usually does not entail just painting over the default skin lightly enough for the detail to show through.

Anyway, I'm gonna get my popcorn.

THE PROCEDURE I used allows me to use the weathering from the original paint job on the new one. if it gets damaged, the old colors show, though. I havent gotten the damage files working yet.

The procedure you use makes the skin unhistorical thus not worthy of being put in game. That and the fact you're using someone elses work then trying to pass if off as your own. Which makes you a liar and a thief.

First of all, your skin wasn't "jacked"

You made available the jpegs (which I had to convert to bmp and change the resolution to 1024 x 1024) and I put it in offine mode.

Jasta 11 had more a/c, so please don't be confused

Mine.........

Don't flatter yourself.  As limited as my skills are, I would never deign to claim something that looks as it has been defecated on with a dull, red crayon as "mine".

Waffle will be impressed, I'm sure, to see that you changed almost nothing of his original artwork.

I'm sure that Skuzzy will be more than pleased to wake up early on a Saturday to deal with your reports of this thread when he could be buzzing around in his Cooper, running people off the road.

Ring Ring

"Hello, Pot?  This is the kettle..."  I'm sure you can finish that one.

If anyone is "jacking" anything, it is you, sir.  Posting something like is an insult to all who TRY to make an effort at skinning.  There are plenty of folks here that will help you.  All you have to do is ask, and not insult their intelligence.

I know which skins are mine when I post them.  They have my name on them so I don't forget.....      :D  (before you get your panties in a wad, the "extra" artwork will not be included with the submission when I am finished.  It's a joke)

Not my 1st choice.  Rather bland for my taste.  Nobody is trying to say they want to make that skin.  They are saying that you should make it by all means.  We just want anything you choose to make to be the best that you can do, and original.  Regurgitating someone's hard work (or regurgitating ON it) is not going to cut it, nor will it be accepted.  We are all trying to save you the hassle of a rejection email.

The cross on the fuse and ruddr were not the "iron cross" shape. They were just a typical "straight up, straight across" on the Baron's DR1. Also, the cross on the fuse had a white outline of the black cross. It all depends on which of his you are skinning I suppose. But, the one I saw on page 6 is horrid.

I hope Skuzzy does not allow you to put Richthofen's plane in here looking like that. The crosses are wrong, the cowl is incorrect, many many problems. If you continue to skin the Baron's Dreidecker, which I strongly encourage you not to do, please do more research. Find pictures of the real thing. Very big controversy on what his plane looked like (DR1). Don't believe just anything, do some mad research. I have his autobiography and he said about his DR1 "I'm still a little annoyed at the fact that the insignias on my Dreidecker have changed from that of my D.Va." If you look at his Alby you will see the old-fashioned "iron cross." He even says HIMSELF they changed. Get to researching my man.

Fellas, I think we really need to cut the hostility, and just simply explain to him how he is doing things all wrong.

Kingcobradude, here's the problem.... There's a way you go about making a skin. You have to create your own work, unless you've been in contact with somebody, and they say "hey, you can use this layer, or that file," and so on, so forth, etc.

What you're doing is just laying red paint bucket fills with reduced opacity on an existing skin.

Now, we all use the default skins to a certain extent. Most of us leave parts like internals, engine detailing, and whatnot, and detail the exterior. That, in general, is an accepted policy.

You need to create your own layers, and create your own effects and detailing and weathering on TOP of those layers.

I would suggest skimming through this:
http://www.nakatomitower.com/skins/tutorial.html

It has pictures, even!

Get an idea of how most of us go through creating skins. It is not the only tutorial you can find, nor is it the ultimate answer, but it WILL give you an idea of what you're doing wrong, and what you might need to do to be taken seriously.

I mean no offense, but currently not one of us takes you seriously because of the way you are presenting yourself and the quality of the work (and the fact it's using large parts of the default skin with a tint/shade applied over it). If you are interested in doing it "right" -- then by all means please keep working on it.

But if we say "uh, that's just not good," you might want to take a look at it, then ask "why?" instead of defending it. This will lead to discussions where you can learn "Oh, I need to create my OWN layer, add my OWN details on top!" or whatever.

I sincerely hope this helps. I'm trying to put out the flaming here. If you keep going as-is, it's just goin to keep fanning the flames.

If you want to be a skineer, that's great, but please know the research and hard tiring work that comes with it. You can't throw one together. And I wasn't even referring to "how" you made the skin. I was complaining about the skin itself. It's simply wrong. All I was stating. But, I wanted you to understand it was wrong so I was hostile, if you don't like it, find me some better work and I will congratulate you and proudly wear your skin. If it's wrong and is put into the game, I will call Skuzzy and argue my case.  :devil

Kingcobra, please read the following:

Quote
plagiarism

Literary theft. Plagiarism occurs when a writer duplicates another writer's language or ideas and then calls the work his or her own. Copyright laws protect writers' words as their legal property. To avoid the charge of plagiarism, writers take care to credit those from whom they borrow and quote.

It's a known fact that if someone plagiarizes, they can be sued for it, maybe even be thrown in jail. In school, you can be suspended or expelled. However, in the world of AH, I highly doubt you would ever get to this point. At best, HTC will send you a rejection email on the submission of your skin. At worst, they could ban you from the community (which I very highly doubt, so you shouldnt be too concerned).

Now to my point. I am not here to troll the boards and put people down; or here to "bash baby seals" as some may put it. I am simply trying to help you. Granted, what I say may seem harsh and blatant, you shouldnt take everything personally. If you choose to block some people on the boards, you are probably shooting yourself in the foot, as most of us here are trying to help you. Some people may say their words by sweetening it up with pleasant things and sugar coat them, but I am not like that. I say it how it is. So this is what I have to say about your skin:

1. It is historically inaccurate. Do your research!
2. This skin is plagiarized. Produce your OWN peice of work.
3. The skin looks like crap. Read up on Krusty's skinning tutorial and your skin will look so much nicer.

These three things basically sum everything up. I am not a skinner, nor would I want to try skinning, but I can at least give you some insight on what the skin needs improved on. Just because some people arent skinners doesnt mean they have a bad eye and shouldnt be listened to. Afterall, if many people are going to fly your skin, it should look good, right?
