lol yea mine said " current resident at 123 anywhere USA this is to inform you that in the weeks coming you will receive a census in the mail", something to that affect
-
Last time, I filled out the form, and they sent someone to ask me all the questions over again anyway.
Around here, the line is around the block at the employment office for people taking the test to work for the census. How hard can it be to count to 12 in Spanish?

Um... Yeah... no hable espanol
(I can do French, German, Russian, English (US), English (UK :P), English (Canada, eh?), Swedish, and Japanese though!)

This should be interesting

I can do it in English. I should not and will not do it in Spanish however, for I live in America where you are required to speak ENGLISH to be a citizen! :devil
-
I already got it and lost it.
-

It's no hablo espaņol. If counting to 12 is all it takes, most high school Spanish students are set.

I have a quote from the machinima Red Vs Blue.
Griff: Hey sis, when we grew up I went to fight aliens and you stayed at home helping mom. And you didn't know sugar about other countries. So how come you speak fluent Spanish?
Sister: Its 25th centuary America, hello!?
Now I am confused, why does America ALWAYS say stuff like Enker where population is concerned. I know why but the Spanish were the first to colonize the New World. It makes sense to me.
P.S: Most American patriots when I question them say to me, YOU WOULD BE SPEAKING GERMAN RIGHT NOW. Well guess what. Without us you would be speaking SPANISH/French Right now !! :D

Spanish were the first to colonize, but English were the first to set up civilized colonies :devil

The Spanish never colonized the east coast of the North America (Some of this region is known as New England... for a reason). Nor did the Australians (I don't believe that Australia was colonized by the English for another 100 years in the first place...). The only Europeans that I can think of off of the top of my head that colonized parts of this area before the English were the Dutch.
Claiming anything to do with the colonization of my country because you're Australian and Australia was a part of Great Britain makes about as much sense as if I were to say that Americans had a hand in the colonization of Australia because the original United States were once part of Great Britain. You're no more British than I am other than the fact that your country was not severed from Britain through means of violent revolution and the Queen of England is still your Head of State.

Spanish where not the first to colonize the New World. Palo Indians where the first by 10,000 or more years.

Got mine today and I sent it in with the following changes:
Name: capt 68Zoom
Address: 68 Lightning Ave
Lancer, AZ 68686
Number of residents above the age of 18 living in household; would that be mental or physical?
Number of minor children living in household: I don't live in a mine and using children is just wrong, they can't pull enough product out anyways.
Annual income: none of your business
Do you have any illegal residents living in your household?; I have some...why do you wanna buy a couple??
Do you think they might wonder if it is real?? Ohh yeah its the government..

This post will probably violate some rule...but about 8 years ago I coined (the first ever use of) the following phrase in my sig line on certain conservative BBS forums...it became wildly popular in those forums...tons of guys said I should make Tee Shirts, stickers....etc...
PRESS [1] FOR ENGLISH ~ PRESS [2] TO BE DEPORTED...
I should have trademarked it because it caught on is now available as a Tee Shirts, bumper stickers etc... and what not on...

Ok, my question is...how many millions of dollars were spent , to send me a mailing to inform me that I will be receiving a mailing?
I am quite fed up with the ineptitude of our government, we are 10 million ways to broke and we still find ways to spend money in worthless endeavors...

Those who feel civic responsibility will obey that sentence.
Besides, not answering doesn't do you any good, it would only serve to ensure your local area is underrepresented.

Really? okay, then I vote the crayon idea! lol. At least the poor SOB reading this stuff might get a laugh...

the census cost is $14 BILLION, yes ladies and gentlemen, children and all others, that is BILLION with a B and that rimes with T and that stands for Trouble, trouble right here in river city.
-
problem is you fill the form out and send it in, there still going to be knocking on your door in person to ask you the same questions, now what a waste of money that is :headscratch: there hiring for those postions all over
-
Six-page foldout for zillion-person households. Received and completed same day. :salute
How many communities are zoned for a dozen people in one household? Wonder what the final credibility rating is of any census. :headscratch:
-
I thought the notice that it was coming was a big waste of money...but I got it today and it was surprisingly pain-free...did it in 5 mins. I LOLed that 3/4 of the packet was the option to count up to 12 people in a household...
-

Actually, I believe the fine for lying on the form is several times larger then the fine for not responding. But it has been quite awhile since anyone actually got fined I think.

well, i can't help if i'm somewhat paranoid.
i do apologize if that offends you in any way, but it is what it is.
they want to know too much. they need to know only one thing....which means only 1 question.
how many people in this household? nothing more.
they don't need to know what i do for a living, what i eat for breakfast, when the last time i farted was, what kind of car i drive, when i last farted in my car that they don't need to know about......nothing.

I'm with Cap on that one, all they need is total Family living in the home and race, nothing else is there business, to much as it is already.

I don't think they even need race........we're all people. skin color is(or should be) irrelevant, as should being german, british, spanish, chinese, etc......if you're an American citizen, then you're an American.
i can't for the life of me understand why this is so friggin hard for anyone to understand.

Oh, how i agree with you on that. In Kansas, we are facing a possibility of school closings left and right because of the budget. i have seen where billions of tax payer money is going and if majority of the people knew where billions of dollars was used for, they would be out rage.

the teachers unions here in nj are going nuts, advertising against our new governer. apparently, he's really trying to do something, and is cutting state aid to the school districts,......and they don't like having their money taken away. i'm guessing that learning in a 5 year old building isn't good enough or something.....

just saw that 40 schools in Detroit will be closing along with some school in Kansas city, Mo. and another school district in Illinois will cut 1,000 jobs. This is truly pathetic how the government can bail out banks who caused all this mess yet the schools in this country can not get the help.

the schools(at least around here) are run just as stupidly as the banks are/were.
they just built a new highschool in my town. it didn't matter that we didn't/don't need it, they built it anyway. i'm fairly certain that it's much the same elsewhere.
-
totaly different here Cap, last year the schools cut 15 days off the year because they were out of money, this year they have cut all but 3 electives for the kids (ROTC, Cad (very old cad program thou) and yearbook staff, now there talking about letting the kids out 2 or 3 weeks early this year again ( outa money) all of the sports programs are mostly funded by local citizens and businesses NOT wanting to see the kids go with out sports, Our state lottery was designed to help all the schools in Oregon, less than 10% goes to that cause, wheres the rest? :headscratch:

according to my brother, the florida state lottery is supposed to do the same down there.
i think here in nj, the state lottery supposedly helps old folks......but i've yet to ever see any proof of such.
i do, however, think some of the administrative staff in most school systems are way over paid, causing a lot of these problems....although i could be wrong about that.

This is what this census is suppose to do. determined where federal money is needed most for education. I truly question the whole system and seeing more and more schools closing their doors, pink slips here and there, programs being cut and looking to have a 4 day school instead of five days. This is all really changing my motivation in getting my teaching degree.
Wonder hoe Canada is doing, really looking to move up there.
-
the schools they are closing are only half full.
-

It's the same in Illinois... All the lottery proceeds are supposed to go to education by law... So, naturally the funds DO go to education, but the two faced politicians just take an equivelent amount of money from the General Fund that WOULD HAVE gone to education, or even more... Nothing at all is gained for education from the Lottery... The Lottery is nothing more then another way they can tax people, and in the case of the Lottery, it is usually the poor folks throwing their money away on scratch off tickets etc...
-

Problem that lotteries have had as funding sources is that state .govs tend to defund the recipients to the tune of the predicted funding they'll get from the lottery in question. In other words, they are just back doors to fund other projects.

yea. well whenever i hear "the proceeds from XXX are going into the general fund, so we can manage them better" i tend to just assume from that point on, that it's going straight into someone's pocket......

that would be nice, but i have on illusion that my property taxes will ever go down. historically, once they raise something like that, they never lower it.
mine, on an old small house in lindenwold are just over 5k/year.
a buddy lives in mt. laurel about 3 miles from south jersey airport.......he's paying about 11k/year.....but his house is much larger, although it's on a tiny lot.

and so the king bade the sheriff to venture forth and collect the kings taxes on all the kings land holdings. It costs allot of money to maintain a castle.

i don't mind paying some taxes, as i know they have to be able to pay the people that provide us services.........but i DO think they've gone nuts with it.
it's like they use property taxes to fill all of their gaps, 'cause they don't know how to stop spending so much money.

Not sure why you consider Serenity's statement ignorant. I personally feel the same way. I would not go to a foreign country that spoke a different language without the means to translate. To this day think it is rediculous that we as Americans have to have 2 languages posted on every sign and in every telephone answering system.

not really.
if one wants to come to america and live and work here, then it is their responsibility to learn english, not mine to learn their language.

i think what he meant, was that if you want to speak spanish, that's fine......just don't come here, and expect us to learn spanish to communicate with you.........
That's a good one Cap.
-
I am confused, why does America ALWAYS say stuff like Enker where population is concerned.
If the Spanish speaking people in this country were in fact, from SPAIN then it would be an issue. The problem is that they are from Mexico.
Now, Mexicans in themselves are not the problem, it's the fact that a huge percentage of them enter and work in this country illegally. Them living and working here illegally means that they are not paying income taxes, taking jobs from legal American citizens (whether or not these jobs are actually wanted is up for debate), and if they are rounded up and sent home, they just come back again.
That in one sense is bad enough, but the government and large corporations cater to them by offering bi-lingual services, advertising in Spanish AND English, hiring bi-lingual customer service reps, etc. etc. Heck even some banks and credit card companies are offering accounts WITHOUT a social security number being necessary.
And, to rub salt in the wound, it is required that aliens speak English to become a citizen, so if they WEREN'T catering to the illegals, technically it shouldn't be necessary to offer bilingual services.
-
Back when we lived in Venezuela awhile, my parents paid $2000 each for me and my brother to go to an english speaking school.
Unfortunately those in power here in the US are a little backwards.
While most illegals (can't use the normal term here) come in from mexico many are actually from farther south. Even though mexico treats those caught breaching their southern border harshly.

One often overlooked issue with the employment of illegal aliens is that they in fact do pay taxes into the system...but never file tax returns. There is a huge incentive to keep the Status quo on the side of the government because the more common occurrence is for those withholding's to never be returned. Its pure profit to the system...it is one of the main reason's that the amendment requiring that eVerify be mandated on all people employed with the so called "Stimulus" dollars was shot down and never got out of committee..
As an employer and contractor I have had my share of employees bounce back as name/number mis-matches when filing quarterly payroll returns. When the employees were confronted with the report...they often just disappear...or come back with documentation that when run through eVerify turns up as fraudulent as well...
And yes I do comply with I9 requirements, and make photo-copies or get photo-copies of all supposed "valid" documentation to cover my tail...
In all cases, given the responsibility of being an employer, they are terminated. At the end of the fiscal year when processing W-2 forms for these ex-employees...I make every effort to contact them and verify their address; I try to personally make arrangements for them to pick up their forms, I do not mail them. The reason I do this is because the residence of these folks is typically inhabited by the same sorts of folks, and the last thing I want to do is send a form that contains a stolen or fake Social Security Number...that in the end would be abused again...
Like I said...tons of these folks get taxed...they never file for a refund...and the government pockets the cash...
Its a scam...

This hasn't been brought up in a while but I thought it should. I was also annoyed when I got the letter informing me that I'd be getting a letter... The Census folks claim that these early notices can boost responses by 6%, and for every 1% increase it saves $85 million.
Seems like a somewhat exaggerated number to me but I don't know the raw data. It is very possible the letters actually saved money.
Anyway mine is filled out, I'm happy that I'll be counted for representation and I don't feel any of the other information is that pervasive.

i disagree with this.
illegal immigrants usually work "under the table" as they can't legally have taxes withheld. so an employer paying juan valdez cash, is not contributing to the system at all........
-
You obviously disagree with some aspect (perhaps all) of my post...as to which aspect, I am uncertain, given your general broad brush "paint all" response...
Your notion is that most illegals work under the table is wrong...
I would guess you are not an employer of human resources as a matter of daily fact...
Aside from the fact that "most illegals are under the table" is patently false...
Are you arguing that the government is ignorant to the apparent and yet beneficial flaw in the status quo that lines their pockets...or you simply casting and painting with a broad brush that all illegals work under the table...that is the cheap and easy out...
Both assumptions ignore the reality of human behavior and my real world experience....
I can assure you that most illegals do not work under the table...and I can equally assure you that the government loves the free money it gets in padding its unfunded liability ledger with what are in essence, "free and clear" contributions to an inevitably unsustainable obligation/entitlement system...
Social Security is going broke and this month marks the first time in history that the SSA has begun cashing in its IOU's to the Treasury/Fed....the so called trust fund...
Watch the dead lock on amnesty drag on for this very reason...
Sorry...but you are wrong...
Understand the government loves this...they get the money...and they don't issue refunds....
Like I said before...its a scam...

My wife brought up a good question, why dont they just use the income tax form. Everyone has to fill one out whether or not you made any money. If for some reason you do not fill out an income tax form then most likely the person is either not a contributing member of the american society, or here illeagle. Either way you do not count, in my eyes, and I should not have to worry about your numbers either adding to what the government already pays for out of my pocket, or getting the numbers of my area infalated. We just filled ours out, they asked for pur phone number, with the reason if they dont understand something they may call. How could they not understand our answers, they selected them. I live in south Texas, there are MANY illeagles here, most contribute to society by doing jobs I wont, but some are the stereotypical, dopers, gangbangers, and the like. How in the name of Fetals butthole do they count, asAamericans, or being in America. I am ready for the Scuzzification.
-
Not everyone has to fill out an income tax form. If you make less than a certain amount in a year you are not required to submit an income tax form.
There are also those that think if they do not file an income tax the gov doesn't know they exist. I have a buddy from high school that use to think this, ask him how it worked out for him.

i should have been more clear......and i'm not trying to discount what you say.
all experience i've had with illegals, is that they are indeed working for cash, and not paying taxes.
i had one that although he lives in marlton nj, has a pensylvania dl? why you might ask? simple. nj will not issue a dl to an illegal, but pa does.
i know for fact that at least 3 local landscapers are doing this. i'm pretty certain it happens in north jersey. if it happens here, it happens elsewhere.
if they're illegal, they(as far as i know) cannot pay taxes, 'cause me as an employer can't legally claim them as an employee.
-
Not all illegals work for cash some use stolen SS#. Which can lead to problems for the actual SS# holder when the IRS comes knocking saying that you owe this money for that work you were doing. Had it happen to a guy I worked with, and the IRS is relentless, mindless, and they don't care what you have to say. They just want the money they think you owe. The only way to deal with the IRS in a situation like this is to get a lawyer and it ends up costing the citizen even more time and money.
So in that case yes the illegals would be paying taxes, but they get far more than they put in. In the form of government programs like welfare and medicare.
-
Cap,
There are tons of illegals that do apply for salary positions and provide fictitious documents all the time. The new law in AZ. that had an immediate effect on this was when employers were going to be prosecuted for hiring them. There was an almost immediate outflow to other areas of the illegals that were working here. I talked to more than one employer and a couple of accountants that had to deal with the bogus SS numbers on tax forms. Until the law changed, a lot of the employers just didn't care. Once the penalties were shifted to the employer they started to care.

that's what has to be done then.
if they're using stolen paperwork, they're still putting a strain on the system..........
but i think i've said in other threads that the responsibility should be put on the employers. i didn't know anyone already did that, and thank you for letting us know.....hopefully others follow suit. :aok

Maverick is dead on right here...
The flip side of greed is capital preservation...unless or until you make it painful on employers...they will look the other way..they will leverage the lax rules.
Why?
Because the playing field is so defined. Morally pure employers are voluntarily assuming a competitive disadvantage...which is contrary to the very fabric that defines them...the nature of employers is a sense of self preservation...thus...even those such as myself that despise the status quo...are forced to leverage the rule set...
It is a horrible position to be in...moral hell...and we can thank our overseers for that..
You want to stop this nonsense...then we must level the field and go after the employers...plain and simple...
And I am employer...and I would welcome it....
Bring it...and lets stop pressing 2 for Spanish...

Only two tries, guess no one has listened to Carlin.
The six most frightening words in the English language are:
Don't worry I'm with the government.
I believe Regan used this line as well during his campaign.
Having worked for the Census when I was unemployed I know a lot of waste comes from the over-reporting of mileage. One crew leader was fired because he was making more in mileage reimbursement than his regular pay. He claimed he was visiting all of his people everyday, but when his people were interviewed no one had ever seen him in the field. The taxpayers doled out nearly fifteen hundred bucks to this guy alone. Multiply that by the thousands of people who didn't get caught and you're looking at a serious outlay of cash.
As for myself I can honestly say I reported my mileage accurately. But I drove a four wheel drive truck and was assigned rather large rural areas that required me to actually drive nearly fifty miles per day. But of course I'm one of those honest types who always follows the letter of the law. That's right I'm the slow a**hole in the right lane where I belong.
The biggest problem I see, illustrated by this crew leaders act, is many people view the government as a source of unlimited cash without taking into account that it's you and me, the taxpayer, who provides this capital in the first place.
They think, "Who cares if I add another thirty miles to my report today, the government can afford it, and everybody else is doing it."
And it's not just the census where this happens.
-
The Census questions this year are the same questions, reworded, as the first Census written by Madison in 1790. The biggest difference is this census excludes 2 questions in the 1790 census, "Are you the head of the household?" and "How many slaves do you own?"
-
Just got mind and did it in around 10 minutes.
good job oakranger!
I am currently working for the US Census. Its only part time but at least they are putting some jobs out there for those that need one till they are able to find something else.

I mean you hit the nail on the head on that one. Good Job !

OMG!
I just today got a Postcard from the Census, telling me that I already recieved the Census form! What a frikken waste of money!
-
Well I got my notice that I would be receiving my Census forum soon. I received the forum 3 weeks before the notice. I noticed someone said that if you did not fill out the census you would be under represented. They are interfering with my pursuit of happiness. The more representation I have the less money, time and freedom I have to pursue happiness. Please stay out of my life. I am more than capable of making my own decisions. And I definitely know more about financial matters than our government. Except for my house I own everything outright. And did I say I bought a house I could afford. Hell my escrow for insurance and taxes make up 1/3 of my monthly payment. Government involvement again. :x

They want to make sure you know you recieved the Census form, this is to ensure that you do not throw it away. Now when they ask you why you didn't fill it out and you say I must have accidently threw it away you have no excuse, you recieved multiple letters saying you will recieve one and have/should have recieved one.
$&#@ on a monkey elbow gents...be an American and fill out the Census, I hear from multiple people who come to America from other countries, they are damn proud to be part of our political process be partaking in Jury Duty, voting, running for office, and even filling out the Census.
The Census has been the same since its creation in the late 1700s, it's always been like this and always will. Do our fathers of this great country, the men and women who died and served a small favor and take 15 minutes out of your time and fill it out. These men and women through out our countries history have risked and gave their lives so you can be here today, repay them a favor.

If you are concerned about wasting taxpayer money, then fill out the census and mail it in so that less people have to be hired to go door to door.

It is not a wast, the census helps determined where tax payers money is needed the most as far as schools, creating jobs, and so on.

filled mine out last week , yesterday i received a notice telling me its against the law to not fill out the census,, ummm i already filled it out mailed it in, nice threatening post card thou, how many people got these and at what cost. freaking idiots, Gawd the gov is so intelligent.

Wow, legal threats to fill out a form they have no proof you received. No return receipt with a signature on it equals no proof of delivery. Prosecute that.

Everything's processed at the post office, and anything that has a post office "stamp" on it, has been delivered and they can find out if it's delivered. Pretty much how "Certificate of Mailing" works.
Plus, they don't have to prove you recieved it, only that they have a system in place.
They would only have to prove that they have a system in place for the mailing of letters and handling returned letters. Since the onus is on the consumer to prove when they recieved the letters.
Defend that.
~Trig
-
Put mine in the mail today.
Those letters and post cards increase returns and reduce the number of hired employees who have to go door to door reminding people. Hence, it should save money, I don't know how much it does though. Seems like they could take that list of people who haven't returned their census and send them a reminder letter or postcard first. They have individual addresses to send the workers, why not do the same for the postcards?
-

Hate to bust your bubble but the scanning at the main post office where the census form was mailed through does not equate delivery at the residence. Try telling the IRS you sent them their check in the mail and it's their fault they didn't get it. See how far that gets you even if you did mail it.

shamelessly stolen from another board......
1. How many people were living or staying in this house, apartment, or mobile home on April 1, 2010?
We ask this question to help get an accurate count of the number of people in the household on Census Day, April 1, 2010. The answer should be based on the guidelines in the 'Start here' section. We use the information to ensure response accuracy and completeness and to contact respondents whose forms have incomplete or missing information.ok....this question i can agree with.
2. Were there any additional people staying here April 1, 2010 that you did not include in Question 1?
Asked since 1880. We ask this question to help identify people who may have been excluded in the count provided in Question 1. We use the information to ensure response accuracy and completeness and to contact respondents whose forms have incomplete or missing information.simply a repeat of #1, but i guess it's ok....
3. Is this house, apartment, or mobile home: owned with mortgage, owned without mortgage, rented, occupied without rent?
Asked since 1890. Homeownership rates serve as an indicator of the nation's economy. The data are also used to administer housing programs and to inform planning decisions.this is none of their business.
4. What is your telephone number?
We ask for a phone number in case we need to contact a respondent when a form is returned with incomplete or missing information.i absolutley will not give them my phone number...i get enough bs calls as it is.
5. Please provide information for each person living here. Start with a person here who owns or rents this house, apartment, or mobile home. If the owner or renter lives somewhere else, start with any adult living here. This will be Person 1. What is Person 1's name?
Listing the name of each person in the household helps the respondent to include all members, particularly in large households where a respondent may forget who was counted and who was not. Also, names are needed if additional information about an individual must be obtained to complete the census form. Federal law protects the confidentiality of personal information, including names.they do not need to know anything about any of us living here, except that we're alive.....
6. What is Person 1's sex?
Asked since 1790. Census data about sex are important because many federal programs must differentiate between males and females for funding, implementing and evaluating their programs. For instance, laws promoting equal employment opportunity for women require census data on sex. Also, sociologists, economists, and other researchers who analyze social and economic trends use the data.again, they need not know.....
7. What is Person 1's age and Date of Birth?
Asked since 1800. Federal, state, and local governments need data about age to interpret most social and economic characteristics, such as forecasting the number of people eligible for Social Security or Medicare benefits. The data are widely used in planning and evaluating government programs and policies that provide funds or services for children, working-age adults, women of childbearing age, or the older population.yet again....they need not know......
8. Is Person 1 of Hispanic, Latino or Spanish origin?
Asked since 1970. The data collected in this question are needed by federal agencies to monitor compliance with anti-discrimination provisions, such as under the Voting Rights Act and the Civil Rights Act. State and local governments may use the data to help plan and administer bilingual programs for people of Hispanic origin.still another one they need not know......
9. What is Person 1's race?
Asked since 1790. Race is key to implementing many federal laws and is needed to monitor compliance with the Voting Rights Act and the Civil Rights Act. State governments use the data to determine congressional, state and local voting districts. Race data are also used to assess fairness of employment practices, to monitor racial disparities in characteristics such as health and education and to plan and obtain funds for public services.see above.......no need for them to know......what difference does my race make to them/?
10. Does Person 1 sometimes live or stay somewhere else?
This is another question we ask in order to ensure response accuracy and completeness and to contact respondents whose forms have incomplete or missing information.now c'mon? why the heck do they need to know if i stay somewhere else or not?
someone posted a pic of the census with a big sharpied #1.....that's what they get from me.
-
Sometimes I wonder about some of you. You complain about giving out some of the most harmless information for a census that will likley help in determining how much money comes back into your area from the feds, but you give your credit card out over the internet to people that you have never met.
Well don't complete your census properly so my community can get those $$$ from you and then my local taxes can go down some.
Many of sound more like the "cutting the nose to spite the face" types.

i hope i'm not about to get "ruled" again.......
it this govt was still for thepeople, and not for itself, i wouldn't mind it so much as i do now.
filling out the census will not ever create a situation where the feds lower my local taxes,,,,,,,,as my local taxes are controlled......well........l ocally.
there is no reason for anyone to know what my income, preferences, skin color, or what shoe size i wear, unless i choose for them to know. :aok
