I'm not too familiar with this. Was it even remotely common?  :headscratch:

Looks like it'll be great for towns, though!

There were many common specialized varients of the M4; flame throwers, rocket launchers, mine destroyers, etc.

I assume you are talking about the T-34 Calliope variant?  It saw combat in late 44-45.  Still trying to find info on how many were made.  Cool ain't she?

Definitely interesting!

I was passingly familiar with the flame throwers, mine destroyers, and some other variants. I'd even guessed they had rockets as well, but such a giant framework was surprising when I checked the main page.  :lol

That's because it's not operated by a guy sitting in a hatch, it's usually some poor schmuck standing on top of the tank firing it.

T34 Calliope

Mounted on a M4 Sherman the T34 rocket launcher had 60 tubes that fired a 4.5 inch rocket to a maximum effective range of 3900 yards.

A problem with the T34 was tube life, the tubes started to break up after only four salvoes and tube life was only 15 to 20 salvoes. The rockets could be fired singly or in salvo, ALL 60 ROCKETS could be fired in 30 SECONDS, and each round impacted with the equivalency of a 105mm round.

The Calliope's elevation worked off the elevation of the main gun and the main gun could not be fired as long as the Calliope was attached. The T34 could be jettisoned hydraulically in a matter of seconds however.

Doesn't work that way. It's specific to the model it's built into. Whether they go back and recode the rest? That's additional work. Possible... but more likely this is a loadout just for this model.

We would be able to use the main gun to aim the rockets?  If so, that would be so much better than the guess and pray method with the SdKfz 251.

Yes, the rockets pivot, and the rod/brace on the barrel points them to match the angle of the barrel. Barrel goes up, rockets go up. Barrel goes down, rockets go down.

Question is, if you can't fire the gun with rockets on, do you substitute your main gun for use of the rockets? Either/or situation?

What if it was the secondary fire instead of the hull gun. like you hit three and it gave you both instead of 2 and it gives you main and hull.

You miss the point. The main gun couldn't be fired with this contraption in place. Does that mean HTC modeled it realistically? Or did they fudge things a bit?

The rocket tubes were able to be removed fairly quickly by the crew.  So in a case where either 1) they had fired all their rockets and needed to stay in the fray or 2) found themselves in a situation where they needed the gun, they would remove the apparatus and free the gun up for use.

In the game, I imagine there will be a way to drop it if you launch with it.

Well Hmmmm?  Are you sure the main gun couldn't fire with the pantograph arm installed?  I thought it could...  Also, if memory serves, the Caliopi could be jettisoned from inside the vehicle, necessary because the rocket motors would sometimes explode if hit while loaded.. It wasn't made to be carried into a tank fight, lol!   Or straffed by airplanes..  Again, if my memory works?
Lusche would know..

COOL addition tho!  Will be very versatile in game even without the launcher, like rollin out of an LCM(1), or an LST(5) at the shoreline  :O   lots of other duties for the good ole Sherman..

Are the PT boat rockets also 4.5"?

I once spawned offline and sped up to match a fleet's speed. The GVs float along with the field but since it's a CV they're on water. I used the PT rockets to try and take out one of the tanks. Can't recall which. Most of them ricochetted up into the air. Unless you had a perfect 90-degree angle they wouldn't kill the offline drone.

I'm thinking not so useful against other GVs. More of a town busting tool.

It stands to reason that since the linkage to elevate the tubes was attached to the gun barrel, firing the gun and the resulting recoil would break the linkage rendering the rockets useless.

I believe the pantograph was connected at the trunnion/mantlet and not the actual gun barrel...
Also, it was an area fire weapon, so don't expect pinpoint accuracy.. And the warheads were smaller than the nebelwerfer style rockets on the 251, just sayin..  This is from memory tho, I will accept more recent info than my creaky old memory, lol!

That could be . . . but I found a site that said the T-40 system with 20 7.2in rockets allowed the gun to be used, but the range of the rockets was only 276 yards.  The 60 tube T-34 system (the one that appears to be modeled) did not allow the main gun to be fired.

The T-34 Rockets are the same 4.5 inch air-to-ground rockets as was fitted on aircraft, so they should have the same relative effect.

With 7 M4A3 variants which one will it be?

From Wiki (hate the site, but it's convenient):

# M4A3 - Ford GAA V-8 engine; welded hull; 75-mm, 76-mm, and 105-mm guns. Users: US, France (small numbers), Nicaragua (small numbers). The M4A3 was the preferred US Army vehicle.

    * M4A3(75) - M4A3 w/ 75mm M3 gun.

    * M4A3(105) - M4A3 w/ 105mm M4 howitzer.

    * M4A3E2 Assault Tank - postwar nickname "Jumbo"/"Cobra King" - extra armour (including 4" on front), vertical sided turret, but about 3-4 mph slower. Built with 75 mm gun but frequently re-armed by the using units with 76-mm guns. Grousers fitted to the tracks. Users: US, France (one vehicle)

    * M4A3E4/M4A3(76)W - M4A3 w/ 76mm M1 gun.

    * M4A3E8/M4A3(76)W HVSS (Easy Eight) - Upgraded with widetrack Horizontal Volute Spring Suspension (HVSS), fitted with the 76mm M1 gun. The new suspension allowed for more armor to be added.

    * M4A3E9/M4A3(105) HVSS - Upgraded with widetrack Horizontal Volute Spring Suspension (HVSS), fitted with the 105mm M4 howitzer.

From front page:

M4A3 75mm.

So I'd have to guess the 75mm version. :P

We'll probably see a plane remodel too, mostly likely the A6Ms as they are the most commonly used fighter with an AH1 model at this point.

And just to clarify..... It looks like they are going to add a gv model that is actually 2 totally different models.......... Not all of those screenshots are a Calliope...... The other two are just a regular M4a3.

Could it be possible that we are cross-modeling?

No no no, you're over-complicating things.

It's a M4a3 with a weapons option. Same as droptanks on planes, gunpods on planes, or rockets on the SKD.

I recollect that the Calliope was almost always used to lay smoke screens but that doesnt mean it wont have the HE ammo.

The gun should be just a shade better than the T-34/76s.

...Should not be hard to add the M4A3 (76) after that one. Here is hoping.

In any case its very cool to see the regular M4A3 "75" Sherman in the game.

Much more, yes.  Don't make the mistake that because they are aimed with the main gun that the main gun's gunsight works well as an aiming device.  I do expect some people to get very good with them though.

Info about firing the main gun from Hunnicutt's definitive book on the Sherman:

"In the original design, the elevation arm was clamped directly to the gun barrel by a split ring and the cannon could not be fired until the launcher was jettisoned.  This feature, combined with jettisoning difficulties, made the tank mounted launchers extremely unpopular with the troops.  Field modifications attempted to correct this condition by removing the elevation arm from the cannon barrel and attaching it to the top of the gun shield.  This permitted the cannon to be fired with the launcher in place, but the smaller movement of the gun mount limited the range of elevation.

"On the T34E1 launcher, the elevation arm was attached to extensions from the gun shield thus retaining the full elevation range and allowing the cannon to be fired without jettisoning the launcher."

Not quite the same... Low level (repeat, level) flying is one thing... See my previous comment. Dive bombing, full load, in combat, on a friendly vehicle, which is spamming the air with rockets trying to shoot down said bomber with ground-to-ground artillary in a way it was never used in the war.

There's just nothing RIGHT about that statement, so much as it's just totally wrong. Morally and historically.

Two tanks.

How is it uneven?  Germany vs USA, UK, and USSR and you think model totals should be the same Axis vs Allies?

That said, a Panzer IV D would be nice.

Well, in a sense that is why the set is still "uneven."  The early war set is still not well represented for any side.  The IV is a late '43 version, the Shermans shown (judging from the calliope on the 75mm) are both late '44 versions.  The earliest tanks we have are the T-34/76 and Tiger.

Not a complaint, just an observation.  I do hope HTC gets around to adding a few true early war tanks at some point in the future.

As long as they are doing Shermans they should add the amphibious version.  That would add a nice twist.

The picture shows the floatation gear lowered.  They were most famously used during the D-Day invasion where many sank mostly due to heavy seas.  The ground defenses largely ignored them thinking they were simply small boats and therefore not very valuable targets.  IIRC they were driven by twin screws.  Pic from Wikipedia:

And we could get the flamethrower version to be used specifically for killing towns.  It would be cool to see buildings go up in flames:

My GOD..., think of the possibilitys..., though of-course it would be VERY vulnerable until it hit the shore.

If that first post had sarcasm in it you hide it extremely well.

My whole point was...

Lancaster's (You can add all heavy bombers in hanger) did not bomb GV's at a forty-five degree angle in WWII, like they do in LW arenas.

Reversal roll here...

I said... "Hmmm... I wonder if any WWII Lancaster III Pilots saw "the rockets red glare" while in a forty-five degree dive?"

I usually up the British "Firefly" and Lancs nine times out of ten (of the heavy bomber sets), usually are dive bombing me into oblivion.

Now, with the rockets... I see them quite possibly being fired in the fore mentioned situation.

Hence my comment... Is that sarcasm? Maybe I'm wrong for the lack of a better or correct word.

Again, my apologies...

X :salute

sorry to say this but i've read many reports saying these amphib DD tanks actually sank due to the fact that the drivers were trying to fight the currents and pointed their tanks toward their agreed upon destination making the tank go almost parallel to the coast and waves would capsize the tank. Heavy seas actually had close to nothing to do with their sinking until driver error forced it. They drove them like vehicles and not boats...

what 321 is saying is a bit different I think.  driving directly into heavy seas is very doable, even in a tank. but even the best boat in the world doesn't do well "to a beam sea", or sideways to the waves, if the waves are heavy enough.

it was more of driver error than heavy seas... they didnt know how to drive a tank in the ocean... if they did then almost all of the DD tanks would have landed safely.

A "following sea" can be a real bugger when you are underpowered and the propulsion on those DD tanks was makeshift at best.  Those tanks as far as I know were only used during D day and very few made it ashore.

Not true, very few made it ashore on the one of the US beaches, lots made it ashore on other beaches. The canadians used them very effectively.
As I understand it, on Omaha the navy ordered them launched way to far out.

They were used on the Rhine, in Italy on the PO in the invasion of southern France.
It would actually be a good addition to the game. It it wasn't so vulnerable to 303 mg fire.

They were also used in Operation Dragoon (Invasion of Southern France), Operation Plunder (British crossing of the Rhine and two cases during the Italian Campaign (crossing of the rivers Po and Adige).  The ones that took part in the Italian Campaign were a mix of DD Shermand and Valentines.

Anyone interested in more info about the DD Shermans, this is an excellent book, Swimming Shermans: Sherman DD amphibious tank of World War II

OK.  I guess I should have just said they got swamped by waves.

I know all about boating.  I've done it my whole life.  I've been on a lake rough enough that I got caught in the middle of the lake as I came around a point and my 16' runabout's closed bow was submerging with the waves breaking halfway up the windshield at idle speeds.  The only thing I could do was keep the bow facing the waves, idle along and hope that either the winds died down or I made it across the lake to a sheltered area.  Unfortunately, I was heading perpendicular to where I wanted to go but I did eventually make it into a large bay and got out of the wind where I was able to turn around and head back right along the shore.  That day was scarey as h*ll and it probably took me two hours to travel what should have taken 5 minutes.
