Title: My Ultimate "Arena Cap / Split Arena" Mega Wishlist
Post by: Baumer on May 04, 2010, 11:24:37 PM

OK, now that I've got your attention (hopefully) with the silly title, let me get one thing perfectly clear from the start.

I completely understand and agree with everything that Hitech or anyone from HTC has stated as a need for the arena caps and split arena.

However, I think there are some area's that could be improved to help the players "help themselves" so to speak. Currently when I enter an arena, the game just puts me on the side I was last on, with no regard for where my squad-mates currently are, or what the current ENY situation is (either good or bad). What I am wishing for is the ability to set some preferences for each arena that I enter.

So I did a mock-up of what I think the "arena preference" page might look like. I included a primary and secondary choice to give more flexibility to handle all the different permutations for how someone might want to play. I think with the stated limit for 32 players per squadron this would only work for squads of 32 or less, the multi-wing squads would have to go about it the current way if they want to stay together (unless HTC changes their minds).

I am sure there are other options as well that I didn't think of, but I wanted to post the idea and maybe we can have a civil discussion about the best options to give everyone the best opportunity to play the way they like.

sound like a good set up.  I can not see why it would be that hard to do but then again, what do i know about writing programs like that.

Of course clarifying that a squad constitutes 32 people max, might help.  Hordes of 100+ people falling under the same name, due to lack if imagination does not constitute a squad,.

Code is code though.........  I'm one of those "mega" people.  However, my squad has 14 members.  The code would only move me/my squad, not the other members of different squads with the same name.

Of course clarifying that a squad constitutes 32 people max, might help.  Hordes of 100+ people falling under the same name, due to lack if imagination does not constitute a squad,.

This idea had merit.

I love the Idea, the only thing I could add to this is a warning that you are about to be moved sides/arena and how many squadies are in the other side/arena and who they are?

Some interesting examples there, be fun to see what HTC thinks about it.

I was thinking that the wood panel pop-up box would say something like "The following squad-mates are on the XXXX side; Tom, Dick, Harry, ect. are you ready to switch sides?" with  Yes / No buttons at the bottom.

What if you got a perk "reward" for switching from the high side to the low side if ENY restrictions were in place?

Be it a perk point multiplier for kills, or whatever.
Anything to encourage people to set aside their chess piece loyalty and fly for the underdog.

Baumer:

I see no problem with the basic concept, I need to think about the details of each case and at no time would some one be put into a full arena no mater what they selected.

And glad to see some out of box thinking on the issue.

I had a similar idea in one of the other split arena threads.  What it basically was a check box in the preferences screen that would notify you when the caps went into place and the current arena you were in was "over" say 250/200 or whatnot.  There would be a pop up screen or System notification in the text buffer and a carrot of Perk Points or something else to help migrate players over to the other arena and help build up the base population.

Thanks Hitech, I didn't mean to imply that anyone would get into an arena that's full.  I think notifying the squad members (who are currently Bishops) in Arena "A" (which is full) that they have additional squad members in Arena "B" (as Knights) and give them the option to click a button on a pop-up box to change arenas and sides. Basically I think us players are lazy, and a one button change would make it easier to balance the arenas.  :lol

And as you said there are several "rules" that would have to be thought out for each option / use case. I was just trying to think of some ways that we the players, could help the over all situation, without forcing anyone to "play my way".

well thought out <S> but id take out the move me to another arena if my squad is there or the move entire squad selections. these should be left up to inividual COs only. Let them deal with it (maybe allow these selections for the COs only?)

Baum,I think this is a great idea although I'd like to see it arena specific,so you can configure your setting for each individual arena.

The other thing that came to mind is "always place me to lower side" maybe reword it to "arena Balancing" this is basically the same thing but without the con-antion of being put at a disadvantage.

I've heard people support that before, in a sense, it's kind of a slap in the face to the player base.  If I am a new player and I log in at 12:30 in the day and orange is closed and blue is open and I go to blue and say 14 players on, I'm going to think this 'MMO' game sucks.  People like to see how many players are online, gives it that community feel.

I like this wish though and it would give the community a way to balance the arenas themselves.  Of course, the ultimate issue with the game is that most of the time, there aren't enough players on to fill up two arenas at once to the point of minimum gameplay sustainability.  I think the real trick to dealing with the cap problems is getting about 2000 more europeans to sign up for this game, which would keep both arenas populated 24/7.  Then, putting it into the communities hands to help balance the two arenas would become VERY feasible.  How to do that?  I'm not sure about HiTech's advertisement efforts in Europe but if it was somehow possible to attract more from across the ocean, HiTech Creations would be on top of the world.

#4 move entire squad ... bothers me.

would each member of the squad have an option to opt-in or opt-out for this? because if theres 9 of us already stuck into a great fight in one arena and we get yanked out of that arena/fight one by one as we hit the tower, just because squaddie #10 has logged in and cant join us because of caps, I'd be annoyed. in fact I'd opt out of it for just this reason, and I suspect most others would too.

overall I cant help thinking that all this approach does is formalise the logic that players already use to decide which arena they want to fly in and save it as a preference. how does this address any of the issues with arena caps?

Totally Agree Grizz,   some Swedish noob the other day was asking random watermelon on country about whether we had downloaded the game.  He said he got the game boxed in a computer store   :headscratch:  ,

I will be making a T Shirt to wear at Duxford  with flyaceshigh.com  on the back but all it needs is a stall with a few laptops and sticks to advertise to 20,000 + WW2 enthusiasts in one day.  From all over Europe.

RTHolmes,
It wasn't very clear on my part but it's supposed to be an opt in/out kind of thing. For example, the squad CO gets in the tower and gets a message that the other arena could use more players for balance. He then decides to move to the other arena, now the players in his squad (Only when they get to the tower) get a message, "Your CO has moved to another arena, would you like to move with him?" That player then can choose yes or no depending on what he wants to do.

The goal of my ideas was to still allow everyone to play when/where/how they want, but to give HTC some tools that would allow players to help arena balance.

You should talk to HTC about doing some sort of official advertising for the company at these WW2 events.  They could send you some official stuff, like business fliers to litter peoples cars with, and comp your account for a year of course.  You should send them an email, I seriously think they would be interested if you'd be down to try to advertise for them a little bit.

Having worked with "contractors", you need to be able to put alot of faith in the people who you allow to represent you.

No offense Bruv, I know you;re sincere about your complaints about aspects of the game, but would you put your reputation in the hands of someone who is possible disgruntled about your product?

Send Skuzzy to England instead.

Bruv would be an incredible representative of HTC in Europe if they gave him the opportunity.  He has been here a while, is CO of one of the best squadrons in the game, is a KOTH champion, and represents himself with pure class.  Even if there was some degree of 'risk' on HTCs part to put any faith into an upstanding person like Bruv, it would be outweighed by the potential rewards to business and avenues of expansion that they currently have limited means of accessing.

Like I said, nothing personal against Bruv.  Maybe I'm just paranoid in risking my business reputation on someone who risks no repercussion  if they decide they have a separate agenda, having been the "may I speak to your supervisor" guy.

Give Bruv a full years subscription, $100 worth of kinkos discresionary spending for fliers, and to spend a few hours putting them on cars and handing them to people at the European WW2 shows.  Cost: Bruv's account and supply fees.  Potential gain?  If just 15-20 or so sign up for only 1 month, out of a demographic of people that would be perfectly marketable for this type of game, you'd break even at the minimum.  Just sayin.

p.s. It would also be a good days work for Bruv, as he would be saving $150 on AH subscriptions.  That's not bad moneys right there.

I used the word advertise incorrectly it should have been promote, this game needs to be demonstrated at strategic events,airshows,r/c shows and the like maybe you could get together with the guys at naturalpoint and do a joint promotion throwing in a little tech advice, a lot of people are still pc phobic.I had no interest in computers untill I stumbled across this game and now I build them for family and friends.

I don't doubt it, but if you were to get someone, with credibility, willing to advertise at a European WW2 event, that's the perfect demographic of people to advertise to.  More than 99.9% of them have probably never even heard of Aces High and don't know such a great game exists.  Personally, if I was a WW2 enthusiast leaving a WW2 air show and had a flier on my car about a combat sim that offered 2 weeks free with absolutely no credit card requirement and immersive combat action, I would be interested.  Even if you got 3 people to get hooked on the game and become regular players, the campaign would be a success.  Imo, it has very high yield potential ratio compared to risk, if you contacted the right player to help you get the ball rolling and be your liaison in Europe.

Here is a thought.

With the big gathering in a month in Dayton...

And there being an airshow and all...

I wonder if HTC (or somebody) could whip up some fliers that could be passed out.

Or possibly make a few T-Shirts and send 'em to the gathering for the players to wear.
Would be some good and fairly cheap advertising for the game.  I am sure if 20-30 people had the shirts on they would generate some interest.

(plus I would love a new AH shirt.  my AH t-shirt and Polo are pretty much "done" and I need some new digs)

Something to think about anyway.
