It was failed from the start.  A pretty useless system I believe was CENSORED FOR RULE 14  :aok

While we're kind of on the topic, has anyone seen CNN's "how he made the bomb" video? http://ac360.blogs.cnn.com/2010/05/05/video-how-he-made-the-bomb/?iref=allsearch (http://ac360.blogs.cnn.com/2010/05/05/video-how-he-made-the-bomb/?iref=allsearch)  What a ridiculous excuse for journalism.  I don't know how to make bombs, but the reported fails to even address the fertilizer in the box above, they cut out the description in their picture, I wonder if they even saw it.

I work in agriculture, and I had heard he used the wrong type of fertilizer, I had to have a little laugh when I found out he used urea instead of ammonium nitrate.  I wonder if the business who sold it to him were trying to swindle him?

I think it's another example of media putting being first as a higher priority than being right.

lol, using urea.  Not really going to do much on that one.  One thing for sure, it is a good thing it did not detonate.
What do u do in agricultural?

I work at a family owned full service agribusiness here in Northeast Kansas. I worked full time for a while but am only part time now due to school.  I do just about anything and everything except operate the machines.

jbpearl.com (http://jbpearl.com)

I know last time I checked we were out of nitrate and had to sell guys urea instead.  I don't follow national supply of nitrate but I wonder if this guy went in looking for it and the salesman convinced him that Urea (46% nitrogen v. 48% in nitrate, right?) was just as good for what he needed, I assume he told the guy it was for a small brome field or something.

Of course I don't know where or how the guy bought the fert.  We don't deal with 50lbs bags at all, I don't know if that is regulated more closely or what.

How is that set-up on the AVT working?  I seen them but never got close enough to see how well they work.

I added some more to the post above.

I assume you're asking about the ATV grid sampling from the picture on the website.  Inside that box is just an old laptop hooked up to the GPS receiver on the right.  I can't remember what program we use but it's just software to grid out a field.  We usually run the perimeter of the field then the program will grid out 1.6ac (this is what we use the most but I have done 1 ac and 2.5 ac) blocks and we take a sample at the center of each box.  The sample is small bag, about 10 cores, 6 inches in depth.  Those samples are sent in for analysis and we get a fancy report back that details specific conditions of each grid.  We have a couple machines, the precision ag ones, that then use those analysis to automatically change type and rate of fertilizer we apply to the field.

Most likely he would have told them that he is using it for the fescue grass,  hay production i bet.  You could put 100 to 150 lbs of fertilizer on fescue but all depends how many acres  you have

Of course he could have even bought 50-100lbs at a couple different places to lower the risk.  Who knows.

LOL.

If this guy got his hand on fertilizer to make a bomb, just wait to see what will happen next.  That is all business that sell fertilizers will have to do a background check on you.  Just wait, it will happen.

it's pretty much that way now with the anhydrous tanks. meth heads would be hog heaven if they they got their hands on that stuff. It's so bad that the co-ops have cameras watching over the place.

What thery have is not that good, more of a "i know who you are" system.  As far as the camra, still not going to stop them.  it will catch them but nobody watching it happening.  By the time they notice a tank low or something that is out of place, the robbers will be long gone.  And not all CO-OP have cameras.

We have plenty of farmers who haul a lot of anhydrous out, we know they aren't making meth.  The problem is they might leave a tank sitting in a field for a few hours.  That is more than enough time for someone to get what they need.  Heck, all someone really needs is about 5 minutes, a bicycle tube, zip tie, and cooler and you're set.  That's just during the day, even an empty tank will spit out a few gallons the guy can use.  There are a lot of stupid meth heads though (hm, I wonder why) who try to pull out of the wrong valve, or leave valves open.  No one is going to notice a couple gallons missing out of a 1000 gal tank if you do it right.

That is excatily what i am talking about.  Your business know farmers in the area, and that is like that all across the country. Now what this guy did, and what happen in Oklahoma City in 95', Dept of Ag. will start pushing for back round checks on everyone wanting a certain amount of  anhydrous. Just like trying to purchase a gun.  How much fertilizer that guy got i do not know and where he got it i am sure FBI is all over that.

I understand that he was train by Terrorist in Pakistani on making bombs.  If that is the case, the terrorist are quickly learning that agricultural business have the main ingredients to make a devastating bomb.

100 to 150 pounds of ammonium nitrate will only cover approximately an acre.  I work at a farm store similar to co-op and we sell it by the ton to local farmers.  Now if some unknown comes in asking for a few bags (150 pounds) we will sell it, but if they ask for a couple thousand pounds we quickly make up excuses "we just sold the last pallet ... they are on the way to pick it up!"  By law we are required to keep it locked up only when we are closed.  As for a background check, I don't see it happening it would hurt too many farmers.

My bad on the weight.  Thx for correcting me on that.
Just wait, i will bet money that the fed will crack down on doing some sort of back round check to but fertilizer.  But it will only be buy certain weight.  We already been attack in Oklahoma City and darn near in New York City.  Who is to stop people for buying it to attack us again.  Yea, you may have a system to who you sell it to and who not to sell it to, but there are other that will be careless about it and sell it to anyone.  There are thousands of CO-OP like business out there.  I really doubt every one of them will drive away business to loose out on the money just because they do not know somebody who is buying it.  What is the going rate for ammonium nitrate per ton these days, over a thousand?

5anders, i glad that you guys are particular to who you do business with.  Unfortunately, meth "losers" and now terrorist are getting their hands on it for other purpose.  Look what happen in London when some terrorist try to blow up a commercial plane with a 40 or so oz. liquid container with a special chemical mixture.  That one time event pretty much halt on what size of liquid container you are aloud to have in your luggage.  This event in new york city just may have the same results.

I can actually see them cracking down on huge quantities like you say but not for a few bags here and there.  As for the price I'll check at work I can't remember off the top of my head. Will it be like the meth makers and sudafed though?  For a while you could only buy two packs of sudafed and had to sign for it, but I could walk into a store right now and buy as much as I want.

Yea, it will have to a certain amount and on anybody.  Just like trying to buy a gun and add the "do not fly" list on to it.
