To begin the story, we had a team(football) event and we ate after. We decided to play basketball after we ate. Some people had to go do some things but we all met up. Few other people met up and soon we had a good 10-15 people there playing pick up basketball.
After a few hours later, a few more people show up. I was already tired and basketball is not a game I blessed to be able to play well. One guy pulls out his gun that hes showing to this one lady. Not pointing just showing. This other guy asks if anyone is wanting to get high, not me because I was sitting down on the fence watching people play. I had called my dad already to come pick me up from the courts but when I told him this. All he said is that now you can't even play basketball without someone having a gun or drugs on them.
I am not a drug user or dealer, or even experimented with alcohol. I understood early that if I want to get anywhere in the game that I love, football, that it will only break my body down. Just wanted to get that clear.
I ask you all, have times changed or just a little worse than they used to be.

As far as I know guns go back to forever... and good thing too.

Nah, not forever, only sometime in the 1300s.
They've seen some slight refinements since then though. :p
-
Those things have been big problems for a very long time. The part that has changed is they have become alot more common place and the people that have them in less than approved places are alot more likley to flaunt both.
I have seen drugs that normally would only be seen in public on large city streets showing up at school functions in hillbilly land as well.

Sounds like your father is doing his job. You should learn to do yours.

I was at a party the summer after my senior year and a shotgun got pulled on someone, my friend was also robbed by some guys we knew with a 9mm.
Im not going to say anything about the weed but guns can be horrible in some peoples hands.

Times are tougher now for kids IMO, from when I went to school (mid 70s to 80s). More drugs in my time but we didn't have the violence and sex on TV and in music like there is now. School shootings were unheard of. We had no internet, music videos, or video games.
Now kids have cops stationed at school, piss tests to get a job, and the worry of wondering if some twit will bring a gun to school and shoot the place up. We used to carry our shotguns in gun racks in our trucks when we parked on school grounds. Everyone carried a pocket knife too. Nowadays the school will call in a SWAT team and lock you away for what we never gave a 2nd thought about.
Our society is going to hell in a hand basket now. And we can thank the media, big government, internet, video games, crack, MTV, taking prayer and spankings out of school, and a million other things for this. And it'll only get worse to the point where we implode from within, just as the Roman Empire did. We're losing our ethical, moral and family values more with each generation. :old:

I misunderstood. I thought you said your father did not want you to play basketball there anymore due to the drug and gun experience.
I also thought you felt in disagreement with your father's decision and are now trying to prove some point you have in disagreement with your father to overturn his decision. I misread one important sentence that threw me off. It was the "All he said is that now you can't even play basketball without someone having a gun or drugs on them." part that I misread.
My fault.
Edit: Thanks for the benefit of doubt. I think I came across as strong and ignorant in my earlier post. :o

Depending on what state it could be legal for him to carry the firearm.

I disagree on there being more drugs back, then yes they where everywhere but now the same things are still out there but the prescription stuff adds a lot more to the scene. I've seen friends on pot and on a few other things (the scene never appealed to me though) but my friends weren't my friends on that new prescription stuff. I agree with everything else though +1

guns at Basketball ? thats what we need. Everyone around tolerated this? It would not be
tolerated here, maybe because a different culture, i dont know *shaking head*

Being from Arizona, I'd change 'crack' to 'meth'.
Also, nix the 'taking prayer out of school' and I agree. Things are bad and getting worse.

Wow, stuff hasn't gotten that bad here when it comes to guns and drugs. BUT, Williamson County, Texas is probably one of the least favorable places to be doing that kind of stuff anywhere in Texas. Not too far back, they sent some alcoholic to life for his 8th DWI, where as in Travis County, he'd probably just get a slap on the wrists, night in jail, and a ticket, but Wil-co (Williamson County) made an example out of him.

Growing up in London as a kid, we all played outside on the streets. They were relatively safe back then. A kid stabbing another kid to death was unheard of.
Now there have been 10 or so kids murdered this year and it's only May. Think it got up to 20 last year.
We didn't have electronic games or internet, mobile phones, the TV was boring for kids, it only had 3 channels and went off air at around midnight.
You knew everyone in your local area. Playing outside got you acquainted with your community. It was good for you.
Schools taught discipline, respect and encouraged initiative. The kids were healthy. Sport at school was aimed at getting you fit. The local parks full of Kids playing football, rugby etc...
Now, as a father of 5. Ages, 16, 9, 6, 5, 4, I see the change.
Society doesn't want kids out playing in the streets.
They can talk to each other on mobile phones, meet face to face on the webcam, MSN or chatrooms. Video games and Youtube, Satellite TV. They can keep fit with the Wii, balancing on a silly plastic board.
They don't know thier neighbours, they don't play outside without me or my wife's suppervision.
My street is now mostly immigrants. Non English speaking. I don't know them, I can't communicate with most of them.
The schools now don't challenge bad behavior. IMO They accept it and excuse it.
Weapons and drugs, porn are all too accessible and available to kids.
I am moving my family out of London next year.
Things have definitely changed
-
no kidding, todays kid arent welcome to play outside unless its with an organized group in which have to pay to be in and is under strict supervision with regulations.
not too long ago my friends and i would wander the neighborhood playing football, hide and seek whatever. we got into a habit of having to talk to the cops and explain ourselves as neighbors would call the police on us often, because of "suspicious" kids out side who may be planning to break into there houses. hell even if we were at a park playing police would come up to us making sure we werent doin drugs an spray painting things.
i kinda asked for this one but still, when i was around 11 one time me and a friend were shooting cans outside with a bb gun. we were not shooting cars or people just cans an boxes. well 5 people called the police on us, we were held gunpoint when 6 squad cars pulled up each with 2 shotgun an pistol weilding police screaming at us to put the gun on the ground and put our hands in the air...we were both handcuffed and thrown in the back of squad cars that day.....ahh the good ol days
so actually its kinda ironic from a young persons point of view when older folks say things like "why dont u kids go outside and play like when we were younger instead of playing ur gamestation 360 box?" well we would if u guys werent callin the cops on us all the time lol.

My wife and I moved to Iowa because it'd be a good place to raise kids. When we got here, we learned about the stuff they call "meth". It's even in the Amish community now. It's truly sad to see young promising men and women totally ruining their lives on this crap.
If you're out there combating stuff like this, you have my deepest support and respect sir :salute

It must be nice being in Jr High and already have all the answers to life. Your train of thought, and kids like you, are the reason this country of ours is going down the road it is.
And let me clue you in on something son. In your 14 or 16 years of life on earth, you haven't lived though much of anything yet. I'd love to be around when you need spiritual strength and guidance and all you have to turn to is your science book. What an empty life you must lead. I feel sorry for you.

I would not really label it as "combating" since I work in EMS, but I do have to contend with all the after effects of dumb arses using too much at once and using them for suicide and the one that makes me the maddest is the ones that use the same utensils from using to mix their baby's formula with (this one did happen too BTW).
Thanks for your respect and support but like the rest of you I am really only doing my job.

If you replaced the marijuana or whatever it was with tobacco & alcohol, and basketball with... something else, would you really expect to see anything different if you were to turn the clock back one or two hundred years?

Sure. I wouldn't see kids sitting in front of computer screens yelling, "PEW PEW PEW... I've got you silly German! DANG IT!! WHERE DID HE COME FROM?!? *Pushes F12* You -squeak- freaking cheater! -squeak- -squeak- -squeak-...."
In addition, wife-ack was easily countered. :D

Fud I don't see anything wrong in that story. Sounds like a bunch of people were hanging out at the park/court and one guy was showing off his (new?) gun. No harm in that. While another guy asked if anyone wanted to get high. Presuming what it was a j then again no harm in that. As much as people want to cry about it marijuana is no more a drug then cigarettes or alcohol. I would see if the guy was waving his gun around threatening people or there was a dealer there selling actual drugs (the hard stuff).

Technology changes, people don't. Individual restraint, govern yourself by your moralistic code or some other power will. Nothing wrong in my enlightened opinion with the display of ownership of a new fire arm nor the proper use of creations yield for its intended means by Almighty God. As Thomas Jefferson would of stated as he participated in Christian worship Service in the House of Representatives during his Presidency. So put that in your pipe and smoke it.
It used to be kosher to string up black people if they used the same urinals as whites. Before that it was completely "moral" to kill off the native Americans and take their land. Civil rights for women are so new that their beginnings are still in living memory. Moral codes change and thus the people who are governed by them.

Big old +1 on that, from both sides of the argument.
And yes, times have changed. They have a tendency to do that.

Quite the contrary Vudak...trying to show them that they aren't.
Of course I'm not talking about you personally, since I have no idea how you raise your kids, or what your state's laws are... But that's not what I see around here.
Limiting employment options because there is a chance of injury is trying to keep them immortal, not show them they aren't. It seems like it's only a matter of time before someone pinches their finger in a cash register, and gets those jobs banned for young kids too.
Young drivers should be allowed to drive at night. It's not like all the deer, drunks, bad drivers and weather patterns of the world miraculously appear after 10 p.m. Further, curfew does not = experience in handling these situations.
Kids that use performance-degrading drugs should be allowed and encouraged to participate in school sports. Not turned away from healthy, positive entertainment. Kids aren't apples. "Good" can influence too... That's not a quality reserved for "bad."
Every time a kid gets hurt or badly influenced in some odd circumstance, there are parents, pundits, and politicians trying to prevent the circumstance from ever happening again. It's almost a policy of isolation from the outside world. It doesn't work IMO.

Absolutely agree, sir. Who needs the sun to go nova or a giant space rock to knock Earth silly? People will invariably create society's own demise. And the universe will continue. It will happen when we have nothing left to lose.
