Okay I just got bored in the game being it was slow. I decided to jump in here to ask the universal question of on why people are “so serious” and get  when it comes to the game and when things don’t go their way. I admit, I myself have stirred the pot few times and even I’ve had days I should just practice foot in mouth. One example was just little while ago, and I won’t say names. Whenever I fight someone and win, if I see the apparent mistake they made, I will comment it on 200 or by private messenger if they are not tuned in 200. I caught this person in a climb and scored some good hits before he quick snap roll/stir, I overshot and pulled up since I had good E and :pray he didn't hit me but thankfully he was not :neener: I looped :airplane: over and saw him completely stalled out :joystick: and crashed. I didn’t say it as announcement or even as attempt to egg him on; I simply pointed out his mistake and he completely flips out over it. :furious I was going to compliment him on his flying but decided not to. In short, why is it people get so prissy over a game? :headscratch:

I'm gonna go out on a limb here... I'd guess that some people would perceive your suggestions as a form of gloating or ego boosting. Understandably, your intentions are good and I'm sure that folks would enjoy the opportunity to improve their game and learn about their mistakes. But, I bet that some folks also know when and how they gave up the advantage and are just ticked at themselves for allowing it to happen.
Best way to avoid the angry response of your victims? Don't offer advice, wait for them to ask. I'm sure you have other things you enjoy about the wonderful game of AH, don't let your enjoyment of the game be ruined by a few angry folks.
:salute

Sometimes I wonder why people get so serious about this game. I think the main conclusion comes down to the fact that those certain individuals spend 24 hours a day playing a game and not going outside and enjoying the weather and excersising. They just have too much time on their hands.

5 WORDS !!! Wait for them to ask !!!

:salute Offer a salute and keep it moving. Extra commentary as innocent and positive as it may be can often be mistaken as gloating by the one who just had a 20mm sandwich with extra Mayo !!

I believe that some get on AH just to have a beer fly around with their squaddies and don't really care about ACM or what they did or didn't do wrong. If they up a plane with the group and get a kill before they die they've accomplished what they wanted to do. I think the majority fit in this category or we'd have a whole lot more in the koth's then just about 40 or so people.
I accept advise and use it constructively but I believe their is just a few of us out there that is looking to improve ACM everytime we up a plane IMO.

Detune 200 and don't ever PM me I don't care :old:
-
I can see where getting destroyed by Rogent's P51 might tick someone off, I know it does that to me :(
But some guys really look at it as war it seems, and work up a frothing hatred of the other side. And also some guys *think* they're so good they don't have to take advice from anyone, especially the last guy who shot them down. Me I'll take any advice I can get - a lot of the little I know I learned from PMs in the arena.
-
I have a full day and then some of stuff that really matters. AH isn't on that list. Its fun as heck, but actually getting mad, sad, embarrassed, frustrated, etc, etc at a video game isn't for me. I may be briefly disappointed when I get killed or screw up a fight I could have won, but its with a smile on my face.
That said, I understand that for some folks AH is a more serious pass time and that fact combined with certain personality traits adds up to "real" frustration for some.
Its like most other "fun" activities. Some guys wrap their $400 driver around a tree when they shank one into the pond, and other guys laugh, drop it back in their bag and quickly get back to the real task at hand which is making sure the beer cart girl doesn't pass you by.
Hmmm...beer carts.... off to the wish list section ;)

I take AH as serious as I take this guy, my hero http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3eNx0LBrmY&feature=related :D

today we are anonymous players. you cant see me, i cant see you.
therefore the mentality is that i can say anything i want, cause you don't know me, you don't know where i live and that's that.
people can hide behind a computer. if you knew that the player calling you a dork, was little jonny renfield from down the street you would go beat the snot out of him and he probably wouldnt do it in the first place cause he knows you would. but as long as you only know him as mebigbwana, there is nothing you or anyone else(except for skuzzy) can do about it! thats why they get so serious, cause they can!
-
Bad manners. It was not always so.

Sometimes it's how you offer the advice. Just jumping right in to "don't do this" or "you did that wrong" is much more provoking than starting with "can I offer a friendly observation?"
If they say, "no," you drop it. If they say "yes," you elaborate. If they start yelling at you for asking if you can offer them an observation, they aren't worth the time it would take to type it out.
-
If Rogent ever offers me advice again I'm gonna...
take it if I am in a Pony D! :aok

I've long said that the mark of a truly great game is that it can make you extremely angry. Just look at any of other types of great games. Remember how mad you used to get at, say, Tetris, or Super Mario Brothers, or poker or any number of other great games. You get emotionally involved in them, deeply, and when things go against you, it just makes you angry. Human nature, coupled with immersion. My .02 anyway, and I've been saying that about games for years. I remember some years ago when a group of good friends and I used to play Magic the Gathering a lot. People would get so angry there would be actual shouting matches over fine points of the rules. Not that we weren't all still close friends, but a really good game has the capacity to infuriate you.
-
The key to the whole thing is simple. There is nothing to get worked up about
No one really dies, planes are free.
You can be competitive while remembering it' just a game. What you think, even when mad, doesn't have to translate into typing. How you are seen by others in the game is dependent on you.
So lighten up Francis and have some fun :)

Only proffer advice if asked for. Offering without prompting from the loser can be perceived as rude in a communication medium of emotionless text.
-
There is so much in life that is worth getting upset over I spend a great deal of time and energy trying to make sure that this silly little game that lets me play cartoon fighter ace isn't one of them, save those feelings for things that matter.
Others have hit upon reasons how the PM's mentioned by the OP could dig up some resentment. Both the bent feelings at "losing" and the limitations or open interpretation of text on a screen are likely to blame. If it is the intent of the OP to offer tips and advice I would recommend a little friendly banter on 200 or other channels to establish a friendly tone to the conversation before launching into what they did wrong.
-
Thats it then tonights movie will be The Dark Knight. Thanks again for playing! :D
-
The truth hurts..plain and simple... some people are having bad days and just after they know the messed up it can be rather rrrrrrrrrr to get told so...I have my little tantrums from time to time but will always apologize once I have gotten over myself.... there are those few though, who are knob ends full stop.
Score really does have alot to do with it....Not so much the becoming top dog but more if you have been improving and it is showing to you and you have a rubbish night...you know the nights..the ones where you wonder why you keep upping....just like gambling at times this game....just one more....I can get 3 this time and make up for that death ......

cartoon airplanes IS serious business!!

:rofl That is a vast majority of AH pile-its. :lol :rofl
Rogent, if you did that to me the worst I would say is "yeah, it's no big deal".

So it would follow that if someone shot you down you would pm them and point out what they did that was better than you?
Or do you dole out instruction only from the gold medal dias?
Why so serious???? Line up 10 people who like to have their faces rubbed in it after they've been belted?
For the greater "why so serious?" - if Aces High represents more than 10% of your interests in life it's time to either;
1) Go the whole way and live Aces High - no-one likes a non committed individual. If you can spend 8 hours a day at your job 8 hours at a keyboard should be a cakewalk. Is there anyone above the 250 hours per tour?
2) Scale it back to the 10% or less line. In which case "you can't be serious!!!"
And I don't need my mistakes pointed out to me by a fellow pilot - my wife, kids and clients have got that all sewn up.
Happy Trails

I generally ask if they want a few critiques unless I know them well enough.

Well, lets see, you fail at the cherry pick, almost get killed in the process, the guy crashes, you are probably alive only because of your good luck, and you point out the mistake they made? Yeah, going afk was a mistake but you see why they may not be interested at your suggestions? I mean, what did you point out as their mistake? The fact that they went AFK? lol. And how exactly do you know who is tuned to 200 and who isnt so you can PM them instead? :rofl
Did you also point out your mistakes on that engagement? lol

In short, why is it people get so prissy over a game? :headscratch:
I get pissy when you warp when I am about to shoot you. Like last night. And you wonder why? :D

cartoon airplanes IS serious business!!
I've re-evaluated my life after gaining weight playing this game. This game was a bad life decision for me. :D
-
Rogent,
I think sometimes a PM or conversation on 200 may be taken for unfriendly banter, bragging or ect ect. I think this is mainly because there is zero face to face interaction. Facial expression, body language, and tone are all lost in a PM, text, or even on the BBS. And most of the time the little :D doesn't cut it. It could easily taken as sarcasms, although you may not have meant it that way.
Like Soulyss stated, you may want to start with some friendly conversation to ease the tension if there is any.
-
have never once got emotional at killing or being killed here..unless laughing is emotional..which I tend to do when I am shot out of the sky..since I usually know what I did wrong.
-

I wasn't aware I was warping, you should have said something and I would have re-logged :salute
