why not a Mk XVI E bubbletop?

It was VERY late to the game. The vast majority of Spitfire XVIs (or XIVs) that fought were high back Spitfires.

You can have every Spit version after the P-80 is put in the game.

Ki-102 before P-80 the Ki-102 at least saw service in wwii but i would be happy with the Ki-45 :angel:

True, but it would have been nice to have a low back XIV (not XVI) instead of the high back, just for something different.
GUNS06 - no such animal as a XVI E - They were all 'e' wing so were just known as XVI's.

I was curious about the number of spits produced with bubble canopies. All I could find easily was 'many' with bubble canopies were produced. I also found they produced 1054 XVI's. It appears that the Mk XVIe had the bubble canopy. See TD 248 photo @ DUXFORD:

'The Mk XVI was the same as the Mk IX in nearly all respects except for the engine, a Merlin 266. The Merlin 266 was the Merlin 66 and was built under licence in the USA by the Packard Motor Company. The "2" was added as a suffix in order to avoid confusion with the engines, as they required different tooling. All Mk XVI aircraft produced were of the Low-Altitude Fighter (LF) variety. This was not determined by the length of the wings (clipped wings were fitted to most LF Spitifres), but by the engine, which had been optimised for low-altitude operation. All production Mk XVIs had clipped wings for low altitude work and were fitted with the rear fuselage fuel tanks with a combined capacity of 75 gal [32] . Many XVIs featured cut-down rear fuselages with "bubble" canopies. On these aircraft the rear fuselage tank capacity was limited to 66 gal [32] .'
If you wanted to you could count the number of XVIe'S that were built. http://www.spitfires.ukf.net/p110.htm (http://www.spitfires.ukf.net/p110.htm) I would guess that the war ended when Japan surrendered? So anything before than would have been built before the end of the war. ( the initial announcement of Japan's surrender was made in the afternoon of August 15, 1945 in Japan). My assumption is XVIe means with bubble canopy.
Not sure the criteria used in selecting aircraft. We have Sea Fire Mk II while the superior Mk III was produced in higher numbers.
I just thing the bubble canopy would be cool looking.

a,b,c,e only referred to wing types and had nothing to do with low/high backs.
Same confusion arises over the often misquoted IXC.
IX's were originally all c winged, so were only referred to as FIX, HFIX and LFX.
a,b,c were only used up to and including the V's. After that there was only ever an e suffix.
There were also a small number of low back LF.IXe's.
The 2 prefix on the Merlin applied to all Merlins manufactured outside the UK and was used long before the Merlin 266.
The tooling issue was resolved by designating Spit IX's with a Merlin 266 as Spit XVI's. Not by the 2 prefix on the engine.

Bubble canopy Spits only got into the game in late March-April 45 as the war was ending. While it might be a nice novelty to have in the MAs, I'd prefer HTC spends the time on other birds first as performance isn't going to change on the Spits due to the bubble canopy. I love Spits and will always hope for the Spit XII and for Kev to get his Seafire III, but they're way down the list with so many other birds needing to be done first.

If the SpitXIV were to receive a bubble top & the cut-down rear, it would change the handling (less stable owing to the cut-down0 and increase the overall speed marginally (iirc), thus it might get more use in the MAs. Failing that, in its current form, raise the ENY to 10 and leave it perked; OR (here we go again) un-perk it.
Yes, i know this was about the spitXVI, but someone mentioned the XIV, so I took advantage of that post to forward my own agenda. :P
