Title: Im giving a museum a facelift!
Post by: flight17 on May 25, 2010, 07:09:39 PM
Well as a requirement for graduation, Im required to do a "senior project". I had two options for this senior project, option A) being a job shadow or option B) being 60hrs of community service. For option A i would have wanted to shadow an airline pilot but i didnt know of any, so i chose B. Now i had to think up of a way that i could envolve aviation into Community Service and this is what i came up with and was approved for. Since i was a member already of Air Heritage Inc. which is a aviation museum and restoration facillity, i decided i would do somthing for them.

A lot of the members there are in their 60's or older. One guy who is very active flew P-47D's in WWII and gets around by a mobile seat/wheelchair. Another member just recently celebrated his 93rd birthday. There are two older ladies who also normally do the flower beds that are in front of the hangar.

Gardening is a Hobby of mine. Ive lived in the country all my life so i grew up having good landscapes around me especially at my grandma's who was my neighbor and where i spent almost all of my summers living at. So taking pride in a nice lawn got stuck into me. I had brought up the idea to the members of me redoing completely their front landscaping back at the march monthly members meeting and they all liked the idea. So April came and i went back to the board meeting this time and formally submitted my master plan for the redo. The object in mind was to make it as upkeep friendly as possibly while making it extremely nice. The board talked about it and the only thing holding it back was the funding. They thought it was just too expensive and that they didnt believe the members would want the 3000 dollars it would take to do all of it to go torwards this instead of the planes. So i went back to redo the plans but keeping it very simular.

I was able to adjust things and have gotten it down to about 1200 dollars. I went back to the May Board Meeting and the majority wasnt there, however in their By-laws they were able to approve it and give funding for the amount of 1000 dollars. The other 200 dollars, which has now turned into around 500 dollars will be coming straight from me and my family along with a few fundraisers and donations from businesses and other people. I myself will be putting about 200 dollars that i have made mowing grass towards it.

So here finally is the plan.

*all new plants except for exsist Hostas and Bulbs which will be removed and replanted elsewhere.
*6in high retaining walls using 12in long tan landscaping brick from homedepot to seperate the beds from the parking lot.
*all new topsoil and dark brown mulch on top

the actual plan itself
(http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd320/flightsimer/Senior%20Project/AirHeritageInccdd.jpg)

currently how it looked before i even touched it in march. As you see there are patches of daffadil bulbs and inbetween each patch is where the Hostas came up. That was pretty much all they have besides weeds and its the same for the whole length of the hangar

(these are to the right of the main entrance)
(looking down from a small hillside)

as you can see it wasnt maintained very well but, the bulbs are done blooming, the hostas have finally completely come up and the brick was bought and delivered by my dad and me saturday. luckily the homedepot is on the other side of the street not even a mile up the road so was a relatively easy job getting it there...

Hopefully, either Wednesday or thursday ill be able to go over and get the bulbs out since their done for the summer and hostas which are big enough to be taken out so i can spray the whole thing down with weed killer. Then either Saturday or Sunday i can actually start preparing them to put the bricks in.

I did a project like this at my house so the brick part should be pretty easy to do. Im hoping to get them planted and mulched by Memorial Day or within the first two weeks of June for the Summer guests.

A little about Air Hertiage. They started back in the 80's when the B-17 nine-O-nine crashed at the airport during an airshow. They restored it back to flying condition after a few years of being at the airport. In the early 90's the group formally was launched. We operate one of only a handful C-123K's in the mainland US (a couple are used in Alaska by a private owner for use in his diamond mines), 1 OV-1D Mohawk (use to have two but sold one in 2007) and a L-21. We currently have a T-28 Trojan that is around 80% restored to flight condition along with a Fairchild 24D which only 10 were ever made which just had its engine hung and is nearing the end of its restoration. We also have a T-34 and 1946 Funk which are in the early stages of restoration. For Static Displays, last year we received a F-15A from Georgia and a T-3 from a member who donated it. We are located at the main entrance to the  Beaver County Airport (KBVI) which is 18nm north of Pittsburgh Intl Airport by plane or 35miles north of Downtown Pittsburgh by car.

I will update this post as i go along. Since Finals are tomarrow and Thursday, ill be able to spend some actual time torwards it in the next few weeks.

well ive gotten the number 1 bed cleaned out. tomarrow, im gonna go over hopefully and till it and then start putting brick in. I think it will be easier to do them one bed at a time than all three at once.

Looks good. Remember, if it was poorly maintained before. it probobly will be poorly maintained after. Which is fine for most of the stuff you have there.
The arborvitae shouldnt be a problem for 20 years or so. I have two right next to my house that are 20 and almost 30 Ft tall that I would just LOVE to get rid of but cant as one is right next to my power line and paying someone else to do it is at the moment cost prohibitive (almost $1K to remove the pair)

The problem with these plants like the problem with alot of shrubs that can grow to a large size. Is people tend to plant them entirely too close to the house/building for instant gratification and then not trim or maintain them at which point they become both problematic from both a building maintenance and structural standpoint and unsightly. At which point they have to be removed because after you trim them they end up looking like a nekked bare stick. LOL

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The butterfly bush. Love em personally hand have a couple myself.
Butterfly bushes grow like forsythia. Another nice bush.

Like forsythia, if your looking to fill in an area rather quickly. The nice thing is they grow like weeds.
Problem is, From a maintenance stand point... they grow like weeds.
After the first year of planting. If you dont stay on top of them and trim them way down at the end of the year. They can become VERY big VERY quickly.
Very pretty plant though. And they do attract butterflies in the late summer when they bloom.

Looks like it should look great though
Im surprised not to see any azalea or Creeping Phlox

its funny you bring azaleas up as i was just thinking about putting them in somewhere. We just bought a couple for my house and i sort of like them.

and i love the BF bush as well. We had one one year and it just took off. We even had some humming birds stop by to it which was cool to see. It didnt make it through the winter though. We didnt cover it so i dont know if that was the problem or not.

the arborvitae is a dwrarf one so it should only get around 10-15ft tall once fully grown. But it was designed for being as maintenance free as possible as i dont know how active ill be in the coming years.

Maybe just a bad plant or bad luck. First one I had didnt do well either.
Second one  I got I thought was doing ok till I moved it about 2 feet because I wanted to better locate it. then it REALLY took off.
Next one I got took off right from the start. Your supposed to cut them way back like you would a rose bush at the end of the season . I didnt do it one year and it was all I could do to keep it manageable. Like I said. they grow like weeds and will get REALLY big if you let them. I keep em trimmed back to about 3-4 feet till mid July after which I just let them go nuts. what I end up with is a big bush with alot of flowers and alot of butterflies. I'll see what pics I still have later.
Winter shouldnt be a problem. You possibly just had bad luck as I do nothing to mine other then trim them back.

I'm trying to plant more and more perennials that bloom every year with only a few  patches of annuals as im getting tired for spending several hundred dollars every year  for plants I end up replanting next year.LOL

Gotta be careful with those though too as some like to spread like wildfire.

17, you're the man.

And the things that matter to you so resonate with what matters to me.

I respect you immensely ... and you know, guys j*g around on these BBS all the time, and go  'salute' over the most tawdry things; but, like, you've totally won my  regard.

Except, dude, show what you've just written to your English teacher; tell her I sent you. She'll be equally wowed; then, she'll break your knuckles with her nun ruler.

And so, if you ever want to get a grant from The National Endowment for the Arts (I have a couple) learn how to spell, punctuate, and get a bandage for your knuckles.

Drediock, you think it'll be OK to trim it back about a foot all the way around?  Right now it's about 6 ft tall and 5 ft across?

Went earlier today to the airport to work for about 4 hours and got about 20-30 ft of bed one's brick work done which is about half of that bed. Still have to till that bed though because i wasnt able to today. I also have to finish getting the last bit of dead plants out of the end since i previously wasnt able to because of cars being parked there.

The front of the rocks where you can see the dirt will be filled in with river rock most likely to give it some sort of boarder.

thought i had updated this, but i guess i didnt...

But on thursday, i was able to complete the bed one wall and here it is: (http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd320/flightsimer/Senior%20Project/0617001753.jpg)(http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd320/flightsimer/Senior%20Project/0617001752a.jpg)(http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd320/flightsimer/Senior%20Project/0617001751.jpg)

it still needs to be tilled though. Tomarrow, i might go over for a little while and start on the second bed since we sort of celebrated fathers day today.

still have to cut 2 bricks for it which ill have done last.

I have done a few projects like this ... I would suggest digging down about 6-8" git rid of the dirt, put in some weed stop matting, and refilling with topsoil or mulch. When planting just cut a hole through the mat. this will keep the weeds away for a few years. If you plant in that dirt weeds again next year.

well im gonna till it and then add another 6 inches of top soil to bring it up close to the top of the bricks, then ill put the weed tarps down, plant the plants and then put the mulch on top of the tarp. That way, the mulch is seperated from the soil so it makes planting easier by just brushing the mulch aside and cutting the tarp to put the plant in.

We did this at our house and didnt put any tarps down at all and the mulch itself was able to keep weeds down pretty well and any that did come up are easy to get out.

I love the stacked blocks, they're cheap and great for a number of uses.  You'll have to waterpoof the lower edge/side of the building if you're going to fill the planters and make them raised.

Looks like the planters are on the north side of the building and don't get much sun, make sure you get something that thrives in the shade and climate you have there.  Also keeping in mind the set-it-and-forget-it mentality here with your plant palette, what's the plan for irrigating the planters?  Looks like there might be some for the lawn or planters around the corner you can tap into, and being in the shade most of the time means it won't need much.

well we get more morning sun than after noon but in late after noon, the sun actually comes back onto it because of the shape of the hangar.

but ya all the plants will do fun in our sun condition. as for watering, there wont be any irregation directly inplace but we have a hose connection in the middle bed that they can be watered if they need to be. We tend to get a good amount of rain so water shouldnt be too much of a problem.

was able to do almost all of bed three today until it started to rain. It was 90 out all day so i didnt mind it, but then the rain turned to thunderstorms and i wasnt going to work with lighting right above me lol

I took this about 15min before the rain came.

everything from that bed still needs to be taken out and the handicap parking signs will be replaced and will have metal sign posts instead of those 4in woods posts

does anyone know what beattle this is? ive never seen a stripped one like this around here.

if you guys had heard about the sterman that flipped at National Aiport in DC, it was based at our airport. This plane came in right after the one had landed and flipped. I asked Jack what happened, and just like i thought, the pilot had his foot on the brakes.

Trade my day in the office for yours anyday, lol.  Looking good, love the plane bonus too.  I figured being in the shade and not in a desert climate like I live in the irrigation wouldn't be too huge an issue.  Even though your planters get a little sun sounds like they'd be considered heavy shade.  The plants your using should do fine as long as they need no direct sun and can tollerate a little bit of direct sun (there are some shade friendly plants that can't tollerate the sun at all, and some that need that hour or two of direct sunlight they get in the afternoon/morning).

Too bad they have yet to invent a need for landscape design/architecture and aerospace beyond decorating their hangars and employee parking lots, lol.  A few years ago my office did some landscape design for some new hangars attached to the LM research area at Edwards AFB, only got to see the outside of them though and whatever came taxiing along in and out or around them for obvious reasons.  Other than a F-35 prototype (given the timing I suspect it was one of the first non VTL type) and a couple F-22s for experiments/research I don't think I can legaly describe how cool that brief job that was.

I take this back, what you have is a Horsenettle Beetle which feeds on weeds, nettles and some vegetables such as peppers and tomatoes.

The two are so similar, the extra muddy orange strip near the wing edge is the only difference.

The walls are complete!!! i was able to complete the largest, bed 2, wall yesterday in 8.5 hours. But now my mom said about possibly fund raising or getting donations (anyone is more than welcome to donate   :pray ) so i can bring the wall up on more level, so its seen better as the curbs sort of hide the brick until up close. That would be a simple job of stacking them though. I do have to cut three bricks  also now that i think about it to totally finish it...

So next thing to do is to till it and then get dirt. I wont be able to till it until sometime next week as my tiller is broken and we have to order a new fuel tank/system

Here is the finish product as of now:

Looks great !!  :aok one question are the parking bumbers (concrete ones) back far enough to allow for clearence when people nose there tires up to them so they dont hit all your block beds? if that wasnt part of your bid you might want to talk the place into having you reset them, they make a epoxy you spread under them, if you snapped a line 3ft off your block beds that would really protect them, i like your choice of plants btw

No they are not yet. Im planning on moving them out once i get the chance, but i havent yet. I had the intention since the get go to do that, but havent yet and really noticed yesterday that it really needed to be done when i saw the one car practically on the wall. Ours are not secured so wont be a problem in moving them out. I might take them out far enough that it makes a pathway to walk to the doors.

And thanks.

thanks guys... I cant wait to see the final before and after shots. I have the before shots and even now, its a really big difference. Later this week ill be able to go over and till them finally once the part comes in for my tiller. After that it should be a pretty simple job from there out.

By Absolute deadline for this is the end of July as our Aviation Appreciation Day is Aug. 7th.

here is the before and after as of now...

well i finally got a tiller (had to rent one) though i didnt pay for it as its my parent's best friend's rental place... but i got bed 1 and 2 tilled and bed three is still full of hastas so im not gonna till it. Ill take them out but im still not gonna till it. It took me 4 hours to till and take out 14 hastas that were in bed 2... finally home relaxing...

no pictures this time. maybe in a few days when i hopefully can get the dirt put in.

it will absolutely be done before the 7th of august as thats when we are having our Aviation Appreciation Day at the airport. If you are in the Western PA area or Eastern Ohio or West Virgina panhandle (or whatever u call that in between PA/OH), you should come to Beaver County airport for the day. We will be serving breakfast, lunch and im pretty sure dinner in our hangar with the food coming from the EAA. Kiddy rides will be available (i might be driving them lol) for the little kids. Planes will be parked everywhere and its just a fun day to get up close to the aircraft and tour our small museum. Also i believe we are having a car cruise and there will be classic cars parked around the airport.

Let me know if any of you are going to try and attend.

Looking great.  You want at least 4' (feet) between the parking stop-blocks and the front of your wall.  This will prevent any auto collisions as well as provide enough room to walk between the beds and the cars.  Maintaining 4' clearance at all times for all paths leading to/from the handicap spots to the front door is also a great idea if you're looking to be very ADA friendly and compliant too (which just FYI, it's frowned on (and in some places straight unlawful/uncompliant) if the handicapped have to travel back into the lot and thus exposing themselves to traffic in the lot before being able to access the building within a certain distance of the front door... so probabley doesn't need to be done here, but if you're going for as many brownie points as possible...).

Sorry I didnt see this sooner.
Yea, should be no problem. I did the same (forgot) and trimmed mine back as well. Its done fine. in fact I've trimmed it again to shape because parts of it were overhanging  my walk way.

Idea for ya.
For some early spring color try some columbine. Wickedly pretty plant that tends to reseed itself and then dies off just as everything else is coming into bloom

Pictures dont do it justice. First time I saw one I was like "wow cool!"

Well today i got them filled with dirt!!! i had origionally planned it to be 10 tons but it only took 6 and it made a little higher than i wanted but is okay as it will settle. I had origionally planned to take it up to about 1in from the top of the brick, but it ended up going to the top.

Tomarrow i will have to go over an finish leveling it more and shifting some dirt around as bed 2 and 3 have small piles of excess dirt while bed 1 needs more dirt down by the hostas along with the small ring around a tree that was made from extra bricks. I also have to put the old landscaping timbers in the back by the steel wall to bring the dirt out away from the building and back below the weather stripping on the outside of the hangar. I origionally was going to do this first, but my friend said he could put the dirt in today when i wasnt expecting it, but it doesnt really matter that bad. Just a little more work.

So here are the pics from today

the hostas are going to be where they are somehow, but my mom thinks i should split them but i havent decided yet. Also the shrub by the door is just there until i find a good spot for it.

i hear that a lot lol. It is a pretty cool turbo prop though and only a few left in the US. We use to have two of them but sold the other a few years ago.

This will be a long 2 parter post with pics. The first two paragraphs can be skipped as its really just a story of what happened on Wednesday… Pick up on Thursday if you do skip it as that’s when pics start.

Well this week has been a very big one for my project and I have gotten a lot done.

I got the all but four of the plants on Wednesday along with the weed tarps but before i could start anything with the plants, i still had to put in the back wall to bring the dirt away from the hangar's wall above the weather strip. So i got that done and then re-leveled the dirt. I got the tarp all down and staked and it was ready to start being planted.

I laid out all the plants how it was planned and started with the butterfly bush. Got the tarp cut open and dug the hole. Got the bush in and was thinking "i might get this bed done today." Started on the first Day Lilly got the tarp cut and then started to hear thunder; looked up and saw clouds coming in from Ohio. So i figured i had about 20-30 minutes to get at least half of the plants in that bed planted before it got too dark or started raining. It was already 8 o’clock by then and i still had to drive to Pittsburgh to pick up my mom at 9 which meant i would only have a half hour anyways left to work. I figured I would at least gather all my tools up and put them next to the car so if it did start raining, i could throw them into the trunk and go. So i did that. I then got into the car to get the camera out so i could get a few pics before the rain did come so i could update this thread. I hadn’t even reached around the seat to get the camera yet and out of nowhere this instant downpour came with gigantic drops. I still had the windows down and all. So rushed to get them shut and then to get the tools in the car. By the time i got it all in, i was completely soaked. 5 minutes later it was all done and there wasn’t even a drizzle. had to go home and change and didn’t even get on the road until 9. The drive up was strange as we had lightning everywhere and it didn’t stop the whole drive, but there was no rain...

Thursday

I went back over to the airport to finish the first bed. Of course with the rain all the dirt turned into muddy dirt. It wasn’t really mud but there was enough water in it still that it sucked having to shovel it out because of the added weight of the water. So I was able to finish bed one’s planting. The next thing I had to do was put the wall up in the back to bring the dirt out again. I got it done and started leveling the dirt again so I could tarp it. That sucked as I was using an old landscape timber to level it by running it across the top of the brick and back wall, but it was hard as bed 2 was a little muddy. I got the bed level and got it tarped and I was done for the day as it was 5pm and Thursday night is our family’s men night out at our local bar.

I took these before I was done tarping bed 2…

Part two.

Today I went over hoping to finish it. But I didn’t :( however, the last four plants had arrived (I had to place a dig order for them). I planted one of them in bed 1 like it’s supposed to be and then started planting bed 2. I was able to get all of bed 2 planted by 7(I’ve been going over around 1 o’clock every day this week).

Its really starting to shape up. Tomorrow, I will go over and hopefully finish by putting up the back wall, tarping and then planting it. Either tomorrow or some day next week, I’ll have my friend deliver the mulch and get it all mulched. I still might put some annuals in as it’s a little thin, but either way it looks 1000 times better than before and in time for the Aviation Appreciation Day which is next Saturday.

I didn’t think to take any shots of the bed from the fronts, but will do that tomorrow.

I think i need to split all of the hostas so they are smaller and match the other plants size better, but i dont know. What are your guys' opinion on that?
