Title: Finally quitting
Post by: AAJagerX on June 04, 2010, 07:22:57 PM
I guess I just finally got sick of it, so I got rid of the cigs that I had yesterday and quit smoking.  So far so good.  I've been a little jittery but I'll make it.  It's pretty tough to get up the guts to take that leap after 12+ years of pack a day (sometimes it was more) use.

Wish me luck!

Good Luck.

Sometimes that's all it takes. I've been tobacco free over three years now, and it's great. :aok

Was 3 years in February since my last one. I still want one every time someone lights up but it get's a lil easier every time.

Hang in there bud, you can do it. The mind is a very powerful thing.

I'm at 5 weeks no cigies. Using patches and other calming aids.
BTW a new tax putting the cigies I smoked at about $25 for a pack of 40 really helped, the bastards.

Terror is a great way of doing it. I had a small stroke and was told by the Docs that if I carried on the way I was going the next wouldn't be small, well I love my family and would not want to cause them problems because I wasn't smart enough to take his advice. I went cold turkey and much to my shock it was only 3 days later that the cravings went away, before that if anyone even looked in my direction I'd be biatching at them.
Being honest I did miss it for the first year, but also in that first year I could now afford things that before were always just beyond my means.

Thanks for the well wishes everyone.  I'm finding that when I want to light up, I have to tell myself that the feeling will pass...  So far that's worked well.  Gonna keep at it, and hopefully in a few days things will start going back to normal

I've already noticed that breathing seems ALOT easier.  I have mild asthma as well, so I know it's the right thing to do.

It's been just over a year for me since I quit.  This was after about 16 years of a pack-a-day smoking (sometimes more).

I had actually quit for about six weeks a year before, but it wasn't meant to be.  Ever since, I had been wanting to quit again but it is so easy to find excuses not to quit than it is to get up the guts to actually do it.

It was May '09 and I knew I was close to quitting again.  I was in Walgreens getting some stuff, and I noticed they had their Walgreens brand nicotine gum on sale half-off.  I had used the gum the year before and it was actually quite effective so I figured.. what the heck.. I'll buy a box while it's on sale (it's like $25 instead of $50!), knowing I was going to give it a go soon.

Then, as I got in the car I got to thinking... WHAT AM I DOING!?  I have the gum, why wait to quit??!  Just do it!  So I made myself a compromise, I'd quit as soon as my pack of smokes was empty.  On the way home, I opened my pack and saw that I only had ONE SMOKE left!  So I figured.. this will be my last one, and I sat in the driveway taking my time smoking it, enjoying it, and saying goodbye.

A few weeks later, my box of nicotine gum was empty, so I went to Walgreens to get some more, and low and behold it wasn't on sale anymore.  I *ALMOST* shelled out the $50 for another box, but then my frugal voice said to me "What the HECK are you doing?  You're just going to get addicted to the gum anyway!  Buy a pack of trident.. it's a LOT cheaper!!!"  So I did.. and I chewed sugar-free gum for about a week and by this time my jaw was killing me so I just quit chewing gum altogether (for the most part).

And here I am.. over a year later.. still smoke free.  Yeah I've put on about 20 lbs since then but I'm working on getting that off now.  Yeah I still have my cravings, and I even have dreams about once or twice a week that I'm smoking (which oddly enough helps with the cravings)... but it has become almost a non-issue.  I don't even think about it hardly anymore, and the few times that I do it's a fleeting thought at most.

Whatever you do, DON'T GIVE IN!  Just don't do it... it'll get easier, but it's definitely not a walk in the park either.
Title: Re: Finally quitting
Post by: Warspawn on June 05, 2010, 01:37:20 AM
I tried quitting several times after smoking for two decades; the gum wouldn't stay lit.  The patches stuck to my lips...  (gotta love Bill Engval!)

For real...I ended up going to a hypnotherapist who stopped my cravings cold.  I listened to some of her cd's for a week, went in and chatted with her for an hour on the recliner, next thing I know...I didn't want to smoke any longer.  Weird, but true.  Even got into a fight once with my g/f and bought a pack, but couldn't smoke one-->tasted like crap.

You can do it!  You'll feel so much better afterwards, and it's a relief not to crave them things where/when they aren't allowed.

I am 5 or 6 years into quitting after smoking for 35 years.  I quit because of the insane amout of taxes being levied on cigarettes.  The rebel in me kicked in and I just walked away from them.  Too hard headed to even have a craving for them after I quit and have not missed them at all.

I thank Texas for giving me the reason I needed to quit.  They made it so easy.

Not to often someone comes up with a scenario where higher taxes can be good. Glad you found a reason to quit.

man been tryin to quit seriously about 6 months now..... I have the gum , patch , pill, and the E cig.....I think the ecig  is the best buy far, when I run out of regular smokess,, it helps me get through the time till i get a real pack of butts......... for me its the hardest thing I have ever tried tooo doo. been smokin since I'm 10,,, 43 now..  I really cant stand smokin,, watched way to many people get eatin up by cancer..... I dont wanna go out that way, everyone suffers when u have cancer, wouldn't wanna put my loved ones through the pain of watching me suffer, If it does happen to me, I'd go with it for a bit till I became a burden on my peeps,,,, then do the morphine dance and head on out the dooor..... good luck to all that are trying too quit.

Smoked for 32 years......loved every minute of it...never hated it.  Doc was always amazed how good my health was..and would often ask if I really was a smoker. I was in excellent health.

doc asked me to quit........I did.

year later.......gained 40 pounds......forced to go on a cholesterol drug...two blood pressure medications...and prilosec due to all the heart burn that crap caused.  Doc then told me my health was so bad...I was a pre-diabetic.  at that point......he actually told me......I **** you not......  "Jeez..your health sucks now that you quit...maybe you are one of the 1 in 10,000 people who's smoking never effects their health to any great extent..and I never should have told you to quit".  true story..he had the nads to tell me that.

it took serious diet changes...I no longer eat bread, sugar or dairy.......ever.....but the weight fell off......and now I weigh less than when I was in high school...in perfect health...not on any medication.....and to be quite honest.....I'm thinking of smoking again.....after 12 years of not smoking.

I smoked and chewed snuff (sometimes at the same time) from age 16 (year 1968) until August the 8th of 2000 at 11:00 am in the morning. Tobacco free ever since. I'm not going to lie, I still miss the snuff, but benefits of being clean from it far outweighs any thought of starting again.

i quit too in 2008 when our awesome leader levied even more taxes on them making them almost 4 bucks a pack. Im a truck driver and have smoked over 25 years but went cold turkey and after a few days it was ok and after about 2 weeks was fine. The worste part was driving all day with nothing to do so i started on sunflower seeds and that worked great.....then i had to kick the sun flower habit.

Cold turkey is the only way to go! Many years ago my oldest daughter asked IF she requested, would I try my hardest to quit smoking? It was obvious she had some anti smoking thing in school, I thought for a moment then realized my 8 year old had out foxed her oldman. You see IF I said no then I would be telling her "what's important" to her is NOT important to me, so that was out of the question then it dawned on me IF I tried and failed I would be saying it is ok to fail at something Hmmmm! Didn't even pick up the "last smoke" after that,  haha  12 years now!

What the hell are they teachin kids these days  ;)

Jager, after 2 weeks my wife bought me a carton hopin to improve my mood  :furious never touched them I never think about them now!

cigs are such little things, YOU are the one who gives them any power over you :aok   Luck will not help,  Just be a MAN OF YOUR WORD and you'll be fine :aok       :salute

Hypnosis gum patches etc are for those who need training wheels, just QUIT!   it is how MEN do things  :aok

Converting to chewing tobacco is perhaps the easiest way to quit smoking. It helps getting past the psychological need to smoke, before quitting nicotine altogether. I quit smoking when I was 30 (many, many moons ago) and chewed for about a year, then I quit that too. Far easier than going cold turkey.

Will do.  There's no way I'm looking back now.

You're right, the cravings keep getting shorter and easier to deal with.  In fact, for the most part I'm alot calmer than I was when I was puffin away.  Breathing is easier, more motivation to get things done and knowing that all of this is only going to get easier every day is a great relief.

Congrats on the first steps. :)

I quit cold turkey at 12am, March 1, 1998.  I actually threw at least half of my pack of smokes out of the car window as soon as midnight rolled around.

I smoked between 1 and 2 packs a day for 7 years.  Heck, I smoked so often that +Tiff (CorkyJr) made up P-38 nose art that had a girl smoking on it.  haha

The first week was very hard for me, so I combatted the cravings by sleeping through them.  I actually took a lot of Benadryl to get through the physical withdrawl - headaches, sweats, coughing, and moodiness.  After the first week, I didn't feel the 'need' for nicotine, though I'd still get a craving when going out to a bar.

The weirdest thing was that I had dreams of smoking cigarettes for at least a year.  Some were realistic enough that I'd wake up pissed at myself for caving into a craving and having a smoke, but then I'd realize it was just a vivid dream.

At any rate, stay focused on it and you can do it. :)

On day 17 and $85 wealthier as an ex-smoker, working out, watching the weight and what I eat closely like the Carbs, sugars.  So far have lost 8 pounds and have no desire to smoke.
Stay away from soda's, if you must have one, try a Diet A&w Rootbeer, very tasty for being a diet soda.

Everyone else is doing it so I figured I'd join in. 25 hours since I've had one. The want is there, but the need isn't. I don't have any smokes left on hand, so if want ends up winning, It means driving to get them. I'm so close to cracking though. I've got a patch a coworker gave me, not sure how that would work out though.

try sunflower seeds to help with the cravings. Ive been a truck driver for 15 years and constantly reached in my pocket for smokes and wheni quit i got over the erge for nicotene but couldnt get rid of the habit of wanting to reach in my pocket for a smoke. I Put a small bag of sunflower seeds there so i reach in and get them and it gives my hand and mouth something to do.

Belive me there is nothing worse then spending 11 hours a day on the road and wanting a smoke and the sunnies did it for me so try them it  could help.

I made the mistake of purchasing some beer. Figured I would try to dis-associate the "smoking and drinking" from each other. Didn't quite work out that way. I've got the pack I bought in an out of the way place that takes some work to get to...on the roof. Sooo....non-social drinking is next on the list. Coming out of my "party years" everything was just so much more fun with smoking and drinking involved. Time to work myself out of that rut. I figure I can afford a new Glock every 4 months just from quitting smoking. And if I quit both, I can get a badarse 1911 in about 6.

As of 4 hours ago it's been one full week without a cigarette!

Staying awake at night taking care of my Rottie has been stressful...  I refuse to light up though.  Eight days now and going strong!

All of you that are giving it a shot, stay tough.   :salute

BTW, that bump pic brings back some memories...  I'm gonna go take a cold shower now.

Rough days come out of the blue now and then. Had a smoke the other day during a rough period, felt gross half way through and now back on track. If anything that cigarette strengthened my resolve.
