So I missed AH and re-upped a few weeks ago. I don't have a lot of free time, but thought I'd spend some with old friends...
I logged on a few nights ago, and nothing was going on, no fights, no squaddies, so I left. I tried again tonight and here's the run-down:
Log on, LWpink where 3 squaddies are is full. LWblue has 1 squaddie so I try it out.
I switch to the country he is on and he is AFK, or no-responsive sitting in the tower.
Fly a few sorties for the rooks where I am stuck with NO aired fights, give up.
In the arena selection I see 8 guys in the WWI arena. WOW! I never got to try that.
Log onto WWI arena, fly a sortie, but the rooks are out of the fight.
Switch to knights, fly for a good HOUR learning the WWI way is complicated.
Get bored with WWI and go back to lobby and find 6 squaddies online in LWpink.
WOW I can actually get into the arena they are in.
They are all knights, I'm stuck on rook (which has almost 2-1 in numbers over bish alone).
OOPS can't switch for 47 minutes.
Log off because there's no reason to fly.
<S> HTC, but I am almost sad I re-upped my subscription. I joined again to have some fun with buddies I have known for years but the game won't let me. I was out of the "LW" arena for over an hour, but the timer obviously doesn't care. I thought the whole point of making separate arenas was to promote fun and "even" out the war.
I'm not whining about arena caps, I'm not whining about chess piece numbers advantage. I'm whining about the fact that even if I get lucky enough to get in the arena my squad-mates are in I can't fly with them. That's the whole ball of wax. Why bother playing if you can't be around the people you have chosen after 8 freaking years to hang with? What a waste this game has become.
-
Squaddies wouldn't switch? Doesn't sound em like at all.
-
Hmmm, did you even ask them to switch to your side...even for just a couple of hours? Perhaps they don't miss you that much.
-
The timer is screwed up, if you switch sides in LWBlue then go to LWOrange/Pink it adds another hour to the timer. If you went back to LWB, you would have been able to switch over to knits, then go back to LWP and fly with your squaddies..
Easy solution, no?
A whine has been recorded.....

so sorry I didn't know the secret country-switch bypass option. It's not that important to me to fly every day and figure out how to bypass whatever game mechanics HTC has put into place.

Oh, so I should ask my squad mates to switch from the country outnumbered more than 2-1 to the country with the highest numbers just because I'm stuck there? I wouldn't be much of a squaddie if I did that moran.
<S> Guppy, see my reply to the other guy about asking squaddies to switch.
-
I rarely log in here anymore, but boy...Mustaine hit a nail there.
(good to see you btw Mustaine....been a while since I saw the handle).
I don't fly here anymore, the game has gone from great to "cater to the squeeker".
Did you know that it is now possible to launch a fully loaded Hawg off a carrier with auto take off?
I guess in reality, the realistic simulations had to give way to the ability for the average 12 year old to play, which is sad for all of us old farts (geeze, can I even say fart here now?) but, everything evolves.
No harm- no foul to HTC...given the same dynamics I would probably grow my game to fit the widest customer base too.
Anyhoo, my annual post came early I guess.
big shout out to Ghosth and TC. <<S>> to you both.
cheers,
RTR
-
No worries. Just made me wonder as I bumped into a fight the other night with Muppets shooting Muppets. Having been killed by squaddies on the other side more then once myself......:)
-
sounds like your game has come and gone for good mustaine. Bummer, but it happens to most players at some point in their AH gaming career. Sometimes it just makes sense to move on for good.
-
Did you know that it is now possible to launch a fully loaded Hawg off a carrier with auto take off?
and........?
-
Oh, so I should ask my squad mates to switch from the country outnumbered more than 2-1 to the country with the highest numbers just because I'm stuck there? I wouldn't be much of a squaddie if I did that moran.
Fine, then why come here and cry about it?
Oh, and it's "moron", not "moran". If you want to try to insult someone, at least spell it right.
-
It's not that important to me to fly every day and figure out how to bypass whatever game mechanics HTC has put into place.
:lol Amen to that!! :aok :aok
-

Take-off and landing the best part of the game for you?
Doesnt really seem to effect game-play......at all
just sayin...
-
Hmmm I was able to use takeoff with a fully loaded F4U when I joined 5 years ago.... :headscratch:
-

Yea that Q button is hard to find and when does deploying flaps actually take you off auto-pilot :headscratch:
-
I do not recall ever hearing of load restrictions being imposed on carrier based F4Us, ever.
Some people need an excuse is all I'm getting here......
man up, when its time to go then just go.
-
Yes the game has changed since you were last here. Would you be interested if NOTHING had changed? Instead of logging off walk away from the computer for an hour and come back, timer expired. Never do I have a problem finding a fight. The Timer was put in place to prevent spies from switching countries to gain info thus affecting game play for others.
The game is not just about you or what you want to do it's about the community. You should have upped against your squaddies and said "hello I'm back!"
:airplane: This game has always frustrated noobs :airplane:
-
Hmmm I was able to use takeoff with a fully loaded F4U when I joined 5 years ago.... :headscratch:
Me too, but I could be lying if I said I had never augered a heavy hog off a CV :lol
-
One day back, one frustrating experience and it's all bad in here? Be a little gracious, recognize that there are reasons for the restrictions you encountered, have a little patience, and try it again. I'm kinda jealous you found some fights in the WW1 arena. Since you are probably a bit rusty that could have put you back in the rythym of flying again, and yes it's different, maybe hard even, but you could have been flying there a little longer untill the other arenas dynamics were more condusive to you flying with your squaddies.
-
Me too, but I could be lying if I said I had never augered a heavy hog off a CV :lol
Used to be that a fully loaded SBD was the only thing auto-takeoff couldn't get off the carrier, regardless of flaps. Hogs it could handle, as long as you threw some flaps in.
I haven't tried the SBD since the thrust adjustment was made.
-
so sorry I didn't know the secret country-switch bypass option. It's not that important to me to fly every day and figure out how to bypass whatever game mechanics HTC has put into place.
I don't fly everyday either, hell look at my stats over the past few months. I'm also waiting for that itch to fly again so I can come back and play more than twice a month. That problem has been post in the bug forums numerous times. Instead of complaining about it, you could have post something in the bug forums along the lines of
"I switched countries in the blue arena and after my 1hr time limit was up I jumped into the other LW arena but it said that I still had 58 minutes until I could switch countries again. Has anyone else had this problem and is there a way to fix it?"
You would have then received a response telling you the same thing I did, if you're getting annoyed by little things like that maybe its just not your time to come back to the game.

heya Mustaine & RTR, one thing is for certian......
the way people reply to other's posts has not changed one bit has it :D
( and people wonder sometimes where all their old friends went? just look at the responses to this thread )
hope you both give it another go..... maybe next time might be more fun :aok

It looks to me like the responses have been quite civil albeit maybe not helpful as we are not sure how to help your friend, and only one person resorted to namecalling, mustaine.

In your old friends second post in this thread he calls a fellow player a "moran", which I'm sure we all know he meant "Moron". Appears to me nothing has changed over the years.

he probably called him a moron for suggesting his squad didn't like him. I guess name calling is worse than insinuating less than desireable ideas? also not in good taste. fairs fair, whatever, maybe time to move on from he said she said. Statement is true, same old board :D
hope to cya round mustaine.
-
One thing has remained pretty common in my time here, I have good nights and bad nights. Some times things just click I find good fights, I fly well and all is right with the world. Other nights I'm lucky to make it off the ground in one piece, I can't keep the plane in the air and there isn't a decent fight to be found anywhere I look.
I doubt there's anything that HTC or the community is going to do that will change, sometimes I can turn a night around with a little silliness a favorite tactic of mine is to get a gunner, hop in a B5N and go find a mob of bad guys and see how long I can stay alive that will usually put a smile on my face and make for a few good laughs which goes a long way to improving my demeanor.
It's good to see another familiar name back in game, I hope one bad night doesn't discourage you too much.
-

Nope, he called me a "moran" because I suggested he ask his squad to switch sides for an hour to fly with him. :lol

A smooth cv landing is always fun for me. Dunno why, but it is.
EDIT: I also get a good laugh when people ask how I got a P-38 to spawn on a CV.
-
Been here since 04. The more this places changes the more it stays the same. I understand the frustrations, but in your case mustaine, its not always like that. We always will have sensitive to critisism chest thumping morons here and every where, still have good and bad nights, and it will never be as good as we think it used to be. Just like everything else in life.

No worries. Just made me wonder as I bumped into a fight the other night with Muppets shooting Muppets. Having been killed by squaddies on the other side more then once myself......:)
the absolute best fights are always with my Muppet brothers, very recently I had a fight with one, (mind you I had no idea a muppet was in that K4)I was in a KI84 he was in a K4, a great fight ensued I had E and ALT at start of fight, I was trying to be aggressive but reserved at same time, after a couple of attacks I knew the guy was good, it went on for a bit more, him trying to negate my E, me trying to kill him without losing E, I eventually gave the con a shot, while I missed all mine...he didn't....Kappa shot you down....
I knew as soon as the shot landed it was a Muppet on the other end, figured it was Grizz :lol nope.

I think the intent of his post is getting lost. Why is it so hard to simply log in and fly with squadies/friends? Why is the burden of seeking the fun placed on the playing customers? Not knowing when RL will allow me time to login, I fully appreciate this post.

HiTech,
You do understand the fact that the majority of people who play this game really dislike the caps you have implemented for one reason or another. Here's an idea, remove them and let paying subscribers "choose" which arena they would rather fly in. If one arena achieves "cess-pool" status then let those players who can't handle it "choose" to fly in another arena, the less populated one. I on the other hand will dive right in and 'ave it large like the good old days. Honest to God this game just isn't the same since caps were put in place.
Right, enough QQing from me.

Well, even though you dispatched me to the tower in humiliating fashion a few days ago, I'll by you a beer for that paragraph.

Nope, he called me a "moran" because I suggested he ask his squad to switch sides for an hour to fly with him. :lol
No I called you a name because you didn't read my original post and made a dumb comment with a suggestion I covered in my original post. See what I said about arena numbers, and the rook (I was on) had over 2-1 advantage on bish. I guess you didn't understand they also had over 1.5-1 over knight... but I wouldn't have mentioned country numbers otherwise.
Your suggestion of asking squaddies from a dogfighting squad to willingly join the biggest horde in the arena is absurd, hence the moniker.
<S> many of you old vets, nice to see you around still. This wasn't the first night back, I've been here for over a week. As someone said: some good, some bad.
This was an epiphany though. I've been reading for years the talk about arena and country limits, but it never effected me (how seldom I fly). I am full on the bandwagon of removing caps, and side switching limits... especially of someone is trying to even out the fight by joining the lower number country.
-
Welcome back. I agree that Caps can be a major problem and would like them to be removed. I think side switching limits need to be extended to stop spying. But spying is a part of war and I can live with it. I did suggest a change in the wish list board to assign each player a default home country and retain the limits of changing the default home country to weekly, but add a button at signon that would allow a player the option of automaticly being placed into the country with the lowest numbers within an arena at any time. This would promote balanced sides and would have allowed you entry to join your squad.

lets take it to its logical conclusion
one mother of all arenas where there are no caps and all rides enabled, no radar, no perks needed.
Ya, leave all other arenas open just for S&Gs. let the masses choose for themselves. just have this one super arena up.
See how far that goes.

That's not what is being asked for. What is being asked for is the arenas as they are now but remove the caps from the LW arenas.

Don't they call that the "Dueling Arena?"

I understand the OP problem. There should be a way to circumvent the Arena CAP for squaddies. Like a special pass. Squadrons are important to AH. Not promoting squadron cohesion is bad to AH, players and the game.

There should be a way to circumvent the Arena CAP for squaddies.
So in other words, "me and my Mega squad should be able to get all 60+ into a capped arena because one of us got a spot hours earlier and went AFK in the tower while being at work all day."
-
So in other words, "me and my Mega squad should be able to get all 60+ into a capped arena because one of us got a spot hours earlier and went AFK in the tower while being at work all day."
Yes. A squad member should not have any problem in joining his squadmates. Couldn't care less about the size of the squad. My squad fits an A-20. My point is: squad integrity should be protected. Your point seems to be different, topic for another post: should squad member numbers be limited?
Cheers,
-
My point is: squad integrity should be protected.
Why should a squad be protected from caps and not individuals? Some of us dont drink and therefore have no interest in AH "mega-skwads". Caps have a reason and that reason goes far beyond what squads need to function. In fact, the mega-skwads are the reason caps were desgined to begin with. No?
-
In fact, the mega-skwads are the reason caps were desgined to begin with. No?
No.
Caps were introduced to enable two arenas to be filled up.
Without them I would fully expect the majority of players to gravitate to the largest numbers arena, leaving the other a 'ghost town'.
-

-
why were two LW arenas introduced?
To split one big cess pool into two smaller ones.
The caps were needed to make sure both arenas got filled up, without them one arena would be full of players the other would be all but empty.
-
The only thing that really has changed for me is the initial excitement I had when I played the first month or two. The game is pretty much the same, it's only that the experience is no longer fresh. All the articles on netaces have been read, the way the game is played is pretty much understood. I think a lot of returning vets expect to recapture the anticipation they had when they first started. It works in the short-term, but AH2 is like riding a bike. You never get that initial excitement and drive back from experiencing something new and challenging after you have peaked. I honestly think this is mostly where the disappointment and frustration comes from for people who are returning. This is true for all things.
-

Not A squad, ALL squads. Because squads over 2 members need to have his members togheter to function. Otherewise, they do not have a reason to exist. Individuals that do not belong to a squadron go to where there is room. The only thing the sistem would do would be allow a squadmember to join his fellow members over CAP.
Don't understand the drinking and mega-squads pun. Must be some private joke, sorry, I don't get it.
CAPS were introduced to avoid anti-social behaviour in the arenas when above a certain number of population. I would turn Ch200/1 off for good instead. But that's me.

Kazaa,
While I don't love the caps, I understand them as HT has quite often answered why they exist, and I don't think they are going away, unless someone can find a better way of doing what the caps do now.
A) Very high numbers in arena creates player "Cess Pool"
B) It's been proven time and time again that the player base does not police itself well, hence adding to the "Cess Pool". (Caps, ENY, and Perks are proof of this fact)
C) There is a "magic number" that HTC believes creates the best/happiest gameplay.
D) HTC's "live" subscriptions were dwindling before the caps were introduced
E) HTC's "live" supscriptions grew after they were introduced.
Just a couple of explanations from HT below :
Simple not refutable facts.
1. Before arena split AH was not longer growing.
2. After arena split AH started growing fast than it ever had.
Now there really is only 1 reason for this, more people are having fun, and thus subscribe.
As I stated , you completely miss the force of the herd mentality. We already have 3 different choices. Does it do much to spread players out?
What would happen is the 450 cap arena would fill up. And then I would have people would complaining and wanting the cap raised. We would raise the cap as you wish and end up with one big arena. Next I start loosing players because they are not having as much fun. My revenue and player counts go down because people are not having as much fun. I switch back to the system I have now.
And as I stated before, we tried this when we first made the arena splits.
And as a different question, if 1 arena is so wonderful , why is Tuesday night not the busiest night of the week?
The basic problem is all about the same thing you wish to promote, Having fun with friends.
My view is we had crossed a point where it became very difficult for a new person entering the game to make new friends.
Please do a search as for detailed reasons I think this was so. But in a nut shell it amounts to ....
When you have to many people in 1 place peer pressure no longer is a control on peoples behavior. Once peer pressure is no longer a control, people will start to exhibit hostile behavior to each other, (in essence overcrowding).
Because of the over crowding we had been forced to implement at lot of game changes (more police type force) to try to control the over crowding.
The arena became much less of a fun social place, then it had at other times.
The current change is an attempt at removing the over crowding and letting pier pressure back into the system.
With some time people will change there behavior back to a more social friendly environment.
If you understand the above, then the question becomes.
How do you spit a group of people while letting them maintain there current set of friends?
Our first attempt was as follows.
Lower arena caps, make arenas of slightly different game play (I.E EW/MW/LW) to see if people can be drawn off the old main population.
The first itteration drew some people to other arenas, but the force of wanting to go to the arena with the most players was to great. And hence to make 2 sustained 250 peek time arenas was not working, because no one wanted to be the first into the empty arena.
While we contemplated a new solution we raised the caps back to 390. This still was not large enough to handle the people still wanting to go to the big arena.
So the current implemtation is designed toward minimizing the time the 2nd arena is below critical mass.
I had hoped that also by always bumping the limit on the lower arena, people would realize that if the numbers were close to equal, the lower populated arena would be where they would next have the most people.
This at times keeps both areas in a non full state, and hence, as you wish , you could always fly with your squad.
Also understand that peoples behavior will only change over time. And in a few weeks it is well possible, that both arenas will allways have space to go play with your squad.

By all means, do not, I repeat, DO NOT! fix anything. Just flame the posters. Sounds like an easy fix to a small bug but hey, do not bother fixing it cause the fun boys said no :rofl

I see somethings never change.

So in other words, "me and my Mega squad should be able to get all 60+ into a capped arena because one of us got a spot hours earlier and went AFK in the tower while being at work all day."
No such thing as a squad that has 60+ members.

There is such thing as multiple wings of a higher level organization. See BoP

Still, not a squad with 60+ members.

I started to lose interest not too long after arena caps were put into place. To me this game wasnt as fun as it was back several years ago.
I greatly enjoyed the old maps that are long gone (from version 1). These new maps just dont do it for me anymore. I do see Mindano came back but also I gave up my subscription sometime back in 2009. I may come back and try it out again, but I dont see it anytime soon due to the fact that the game just changed too much for me.
Call me an old fart, but I once again push the idea of bringing the AH1 server back up for paying subscribers. If given the choice to play in version 2 with the new maps or version 1 with all the old original maps, I would pick version 1 over 2 anyday and im sure there are many more members from years back like me that would agree

Has anybody actually seen a 60 player sqd online at the same time? The most I've ever seen was something like 20 on someone's sqd night, even that is rare, big deal. The major hordes in the game comprise of lazy players from all different walks of cartoon life looking for soft fights and easy kills. The whole mega sqd rolling swarm is a myth as far as I have seen, or not seen for that matter.

Bops on squad night used to have a good 40+ back in the day.
(I think i'm remembering that right...)
I also don't think i've seen 60 on at one time.

BS, I remember back in the day all 3 wings of the BK's on at the same time. The GV wing would all up troops and head to a town while our bomber wings flew NOE to level the buildings given cover by the fighter wing vulching the runways. We would take 30 or 40 bases every night and if I remember correctly, we had like 80 to 90 guys on. Ahhhh, the good old days :D

Man, I sure do miss those good old days. We'd shut down arena after arena with our finely honed combined ops.

I miss the free Burger King you guys handed out :D

Blue arena is running one of the AH1 maps right now, it rings back memories of Ded and Levi and the other BKs rolling bases from way yonder. Great furballs on that map last night.

Thats when HT came up with the Pizza map so the arenas would not reset every hour.

Levi, you still playing WoW? You ever going to come back to Aces High, even if it's just for one sortie?

Heya, Kazaa! <S> I'm still playing WoW, though I've been taking it very casually during the summer.
Dunno about returning to Aces High. I can assure you that the level of rust I'd have would make even rank noobs cringe.

As I said, like the good old days. No wonder you were assigned to bomber wing
-
Ya well I was grounded for two years My Ded Head :)
good to see you're still here

You need to get back into the pilots seat Levi, the adrenaline of perfectly timed reversal will be enough to break your years of WoW addiction and never ending pursuit for obtaining the best gear. I'm speaking from experience.

I tried the WoW couldnt get into it, had big hopes for Conan, that was a flop, so now I am banging away at Fallout 3.
trying my hand at modeling, that is not easy stuff to do. :O
