Title: Destructible Environment
Post by: bravoa8 on July 11, 2010, 03:59:45 PM
Would a destructible environment be too much to ask for? Like tanks tearing trees down and tanks driving through houses.

I know what the first reply is going to be... "It will use too much computer" I've seen destructible environments in several other games why can't we have it in this game? Is it too hard to make?

What game, and how truly destructible was it and not just coded events? An other things to mostly note is just the absolute size of what we see at once in AH is very large compared to many games.

0:25 and 0:50 Battlefield 1943 has a destructible environment too.

No, it won't use too much computer or too much bandwidth.  It is unmanageable in terms of data needed to be tracked by the server though.  Think of how many trees there are on a 512x512 mile map.  Each tree would need to be tracked individually and would, at a minimum, need a destroyed or not destroyed flag in the code.  If trees had a durability that would need to be tracked instead.

So it would contribute to lag? Because when they added the new strats I didn't have any lag problems.

No, it wouldn't be a lag issue, or rather an insignificant one.  It would be a database issue.

Ok I see an alteration on this request. How about the city around the stats be able to be destroyed. It would make for something else to be bombed and as for any points for it make it 1/5 the normal points.

I think you can destroy the town around the strat for 0 points.

Just say you want points for cutting down forests and I'm in.

I'd settle for being able to knock those banana trees down with a tank or half track instead of being flipped over when I hit one.

I'd settle for a GV fight style revamp... let us have a reason to drive GVs to cities and throw us multiple cities throughout the map. not just one mega city.

how about making it were every main gun round takes out two sides of a building in town instead of nothing then the whole building, then letting a tank knock two sides down while driving into it?
I know fixing the whole terrain for damage would be a large order, but just the town might not be so bad.   then you could drive into a building  while having engagements in town!
code the tank to take damage as well from the buildings so that you could not drive threw more than two or three before you were tracked or something!

Perhaps that's what the new ground objects are leading up to? Have you seen the dev shots on the HTC homepage?
