Hey everyone, This coming sunday, my recruiting is bringing me up to MEPS so I'll be ready to ship out on monday to Fort Benning, GA for Infantry training. Can't wait for the 16 weeks im gonna be getting smoked, then ruck marches in 100 degree heat and humidity, the ranges, MOUT training, convoy live fire, night infiltration course, and The Gauntlet and victory forge. I've been waiting my whole life for this! :rock
-
It's been a while since I went through that. Good luck!
-
Score too high on the ASVAB to be a marine?
Good luck!
I'm glad I didn't know what was coming.
-
Ahh, memories. :)
-
Don't be first and don't be last at anything, you'll do just fine
;)
-
Bets of Luck :salute I went through Benning in 11/83. D-10-2 at Harmony Church (long gone now). Was next to the Ranger School. Remember- Keep your mouth shut (except for questions) Ears open all the time. You'll do fine. I was a Mortar Maggot (11C). Oh...don't voluteer, and don't be first to say you have a driver's license. You'll be driving a broom or floor buffer, lol

Don't want to be a buzzkill, but I really kinda do. I want you to know that everything loses it's luster as soon as you roll through the front gate. There's a lot of fun stuff in Basic, but the Army has a great way of making fun stuff stupid. The Convoy Live Fire will be two days of BS to ride in a truck for 20 min and shoot stuff, but it's still worth it. I put off medical treatment for a severely inflamed eyebrow to do that one.
The coming months are going to suck more than anything you've ever done, but always remember it's all with a point, and remember that everyone here is pulling for you. If it didn't suck it wouldn't prepare you for anything. People around you will quit. They'll find "medical" excuses.
Always place the mission first.
Never accept defeat.
Never quit.
Never leave a fallen comrade.
Absorb every piece of knowledge they throw at you, no matter how small. It can and will save your life, or the life of your buddy. Never forget that you're training for war. Come to view corrective counseling as an opportunity for extra PT. It's all about what you make of it in your own head.
Don't hide in the shower room when you're supposed to be freezing your butt off outside. That'll bring bad things.
If you don't already have Airborne School in your contract, get it. Bust tail and you can probably get a slot. You won't regret that.
Try not to get an idiot partner on IV day.
In the gas chamber, just hold your breath till you get your chinstrap on and have everything secured. Then you won't have to do it again.
My breakfast strategy for maximum consumption:
Get biscuits and gravy. Their bacon is turkey and lame.
Sit down and start shoveling eggs. While you're chewing, chop the biscuits to make it easier to start shoveling those next. Proceed to the biscuits. Drink water only to wash down. You'll have time to finish all the water at the end. Once biscuits are completely secured in your digestive system, proceed to fruit or oatmeal to fill in as many cracks as possible. Sometimes I'd even get a little bit of french toast in, but without syrup it's really hard to put down quickly. By this time they're screaming at you to drink your water and get out.
Elapsed time: 2-3 min.
This is how I'd start the day off right.
Peanut butter from the MREs is golden, especially when you're not allowed the candy or cookies. Beware the Jumbalaya.
Don't ever screw around on a live fire range. This is one of the only times a DS can put hands on a recruit, and they relish the opportunity.
Drink water.
Say Hi to Ft. Benning for me. It's a nice place.
Try to visit the new Infantry Museum on parents day. I'd love to see pics on these forums!
If they try to send you to Ft. Polk, seriously consider pulling a Klinger. OK, not really, but good luck with that one!
Keep strong and it'll be over before you know it, crossed rifles on your collar and blue cord on your arm. Then to patch on your shoulder. Let me know if there's anything else I can do!

corrective counseling
is that what we know as a "beasting"? sounds like a euphemism for NCOs working out their "anger issues" on the closest victim :D
edit: and good luck selino, i'm gonna be looking at a computer monitor the next 6 months so I'm kinda jealous :)

I've been waiting my whole life for this!
I said the same thing the first time I saw Double Stuf Oreos. :D
Good luck :salute

Wise words and very true. First you will go to the Reception Battalion for shots, uniforms, haircut & lots of paperwork. After a week or two, then you will go down range to your actual Basic Battalion. The first three weeks are known as Total Control, where a DS will be with you 24 hours a day. This is the roughest part because they have to break you knuckleheads down and start rebuilding you as a soldier. After that, week after week, it will get easier. You will still get yelled at a lot, but as your platoon/company starts learning the ropes of soldiering & start to do things the correct way, you will see a difference in your treatment. Be prepared to be punished for others' mistakes. You are all in it together. Teamwork is everything. I cannot stress that enough. Good luck to ya Private. I went through Benning in August '95. It's a kick in the nuts, but I know how much this means to you and know you will do fine. When you "Turn Blue" and get the blue discs and shoulder cord that only the infantry wear, you will be part of a brotherhood for life.
Hooah troop. :salute

I believe it may relate to the 10-day standard for quarentine of contageous "threats", but there's probabley plenty of other things they'll think of to keep you busy and productive during that time. If you come in intentionaly or unintentionaly sick (or madeout with every girl on your block and in the county nextdoor the night before you shipped out) with something that's contageous and a threat to the health of the rest of the camp, it'll show up within 10 days (or if it's just a typical cold/flu, get clearaed up within that time), then you're clear to sweat and bleed with the rest of them.
-
Do you do Ranger school immediatley after infantry school if you're selected? Or how does that work. I know it's awful, but if any of you've done it, how would you prepare yourself if you had to do it again (Rangers School)?
-
hey someone told me that i should get like 10-14 days leave after training, anyone know if this is true?
-
Remember you might be deploy a few months after AIT and stuff. When I went through OBC, my instructor was like some of you will be in threater within next 3 months, and some of you wont make it pass this year. Basically, try to remember some of the toejam you learn. I was deployed a month after graduating from OBC and took a PLT in combat a week after getting in country. I lost a few LTs buddy within the 1st year. Suck it up for next few months and until you hit E4 xD then it should be smooth sailing.
-
Basic, Airborne, leave, month at Ft. Polk, downrange.
Hopefully you'll be able to spend time with your unit before deploying, but it just depends on which unit they send you to and their deployment schedule.
You'll be at 30th AG for 10-14 days. It takes a little while to get everyone processed through. It'll be boring and you'll get really, really sick of standing in line at parade rest. I got to sleep a lot, which I relished in the following weeks. Once the DS picks you up at 30th AG, you're basically screwed for the next four months. Like USRanger said, it'll get better as it goes on and your guys get the lead out.
Gotta go put lettuce on things now. Make sure you send me any other Questions you have before you ship out!

I resemble that remark, plus not everyone can be as good as a Jar Head.
BTW :salute and good luck and thanks for what you are about to do. The only piece of advise I can give is, you have 2 ears and 1 mouth, use your ears twice as much a you use your mouth. Stay lean stay clean and you will make it through.

You will be coming up on Christmas Block Leave with your time hack for Basic.....you may get the 18 day exodus.
Like all the other Infantry guys said...it sucks the biggest hairest nuts in the world but you get to do some really cool stuff.....remember dont stiffen your legs up if you fall from eagle tower onto the net :rofl
Talk to your recruit about ATRAP or home town recruiting when your on leave after basic so you dont waste leave days....that happened to me and Im still trying to gain some.
Worse part of Basic is 30th AG....you will go back there at the end and be like....Wow this place sucks....lol the 20 crappers they got in the formation pavilion stink SO bad.
MREs make your craps come out differently....try to save craps for times when you got a good crapper.....
Save paper towels/ wet wipes from MREs.....they are your a friend of your B hole
Dont eat the candy unless someone says you can......
Its going to hurt......sick call isnt the answer
when doing anything PT or calling at ease at the door......SOUND OFF!!!!
While training put some extra effort in it......Drills love to see some voilence of action in training
Ruck Marchs suck and they are exactly how far they said they were going to be....they arent supposed to lie to you
Family Day rocks......dont spend money on equipment at Ranger Joes...you get cool stuff at your unit
Dont let anyone know its your birthday!!!!
just some advice :D

A friend of a friend that just joined the army infantry (his mom died earlier this year, kind of a lost kid with no direction or cause at the moment) and that's been in for about a month now said the standard deal is that they all get a month of training in Alaska with their likely permanent unit before being shipped out to Afghanistan.

What unit is that? 10th Mountain doesnt go there but that might be because we have a colder winter :D
-
Don't really know and I don't think my friend knows, but I can ask her to ask him. She's a girl, you know how interested they are in various unit divisions and historical relevance and stuff and junk.

30th AG sucks. Its a horrible place to be introduced to the Infantry. Keep your ego in check, remember that you havent done sh*t yet, you just volunteered to do it. The guys with wreaths around a rifle on their chest, respect them. Stay off Victory Drive. You dont need anything they are selling there. Its called VD for a reason. Try not to blow your whole paycheck at Ranger Joes the first time you go there, you dont need all that cool guy stuff. Be like a sponge, listen to everything they say. Dont just learn from your mistakes, learn from your buddy's. You wont make the time limits, but make it look like you are trying. As for the voluntering, I say volunter for everything. I made a habit out of it, ended up with some pretty cool stuff through out my years. (I.E Malaysian Combat Tracking, EMT school, SOTIC MTT, Performace Shooting) Just keep in mind that its all a game. They will win, let them. Just learn the lesson they are teaching. Its all worth it when they hang that Blue Cord off your shoulder. And when you do get to your unit, and someone asks you where you went to Basic, DO NOT say "Ft. Benning". They know that much, thats where we all went.
-
Good luck , Selino. you need anything give me a shout <S> TC

Good luck, Selino.

For the DS --> :devil

Once you get out of red phase it slacks up a lil. It has already been said don't volunteer for anything lol. Also I realized alot of ppl lost common sense when I went through Boot, try to keep that and be part of the team. Never do anything by yourself. Hopefully you won't have a battle buddy like I did who kept scuffing the DS's boot on accident :furious. <S> and Grats.
-
lol Hes sucking at 30th AG right now!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
