Ok its actually named after President Ford.
Making the world's most cutting-edge aircraft carrier
http://news.cnet.com/8301-13772_3-20008972-52.html
First I heard of this, not that I'm in the know or anything, but I watch Weaponology and The Internets, so it surprised me that we're building a new carrier class. Seems pretty cool, I'm curious about the new catapult system more than anything else.

They've been on on this for a few year. Instead of steam cat's, they are going to use electromaic cat's. Several years ago when the Brits were starting to delevope their new carriers, they wanted to use the elec. cat's instead of steam.
-
From the size of the new British CVs, they could probably use slingshots :bolt:
-
Bleh. I'm getting tired of all these political names. Let's get carriers back to being named after battles and famous ships like they're supposed to be.
-
Like USS Afghanistan or USS Iran? :x
-
Currently there's no Yorktown, Lexington Hornet, Ranger Constellation or Saratoga. Cowpens and Antietam are cruisers, while Essex and Wasp are amphibious assault ships.
I think Enterprise is the only fleet carrier left whose name follows the historical tradition.

I was thinking the same thing .President Ford rates a dd not a CV IMHO . CV's named after old ships, cruisers after cities , destroyers named after people . The only thing I would leave the same is the boomers named after states as we will never see a BB again . BTW isn't the Big E , the next CV to decomission ?
-
Enterprise is prolly the only name that will always have a ship attached to it. There have been 8 ships named Enterprise(including CV-65). I belong to the USS America Carrier Veterans Association and we lobbied for years to have the class(now known as Ford ) named for the America. Instead , America was given to the lead ship of a new class of LHA(R). If memory serves me right, the ships you mentioned are still listed in the naval registry of ship and therefore cannot assigned to another ship until it is stricken from the registry.
-
The only ship name that I'm aware of that will never (conceivably) be reused is Constitution. Even Arizona is available for use (there's a proposal for the second Ford-class carrier to be named Arizona, which would make her the first fleet carrier since USS America named following the old tradition). Incidentally, there's actually been more Rangers and Wasps than there have been Enterprises.
-
yes, there were 10 ships named Wasp and there were 8 named Ranger. :salute
-
...there were 8 named Ranger. :salute
I forgot to exclude the two canceled Lexington-class battlecruisers....
-
General motors must be pissed the ship wasn't named after him :D

its all good Sax<S>

USS Fallujah :salute

It's still in use is why. The U.S.S. Constitution is still a commissioned ship in the U.S. Navy.

What's funny about the U.S.S. Constitution is its reliability and very well could become the last operational military ship. Today, all modern ships are largely based on electronics to function. An EMP bomb blast may disable most electronics (including military support vehicles) rendering most of what we depend on today.
I've always wondered why Saddam Hussein never used EMP bombs when things were looking bad.

I think that was sort of my point. Yorktown and the others are NOT still commissioned ships in the US Navy, meaning that their names are available to be reused instead of naming more ships after politicians. At least Nimitz was an admiral, but one Congressman wants to name CVN-79 after Barry Goldwater. WTF? (there's also a petition to make her the ninth Enterprise, which makes a LOT more sense).

I take it that you've never heard of a Faraday cage.
It was believed that Hussein was saving his EMP bombs to use as WMDs :lol

I know he pardoned Nixon. :devil :rofl

Gerald ford was a gunnery officer on a carrier in ww2, who saved the lives of many onboard his ship when he helped extinguish fires that broke out on the hanger deck. I think thats worthy of having an aircraft carrier named after you, and being president doesnt hurt.
edit: Oh, and who is barry goldwater?

Survived two assassination attempts for one.
He was the only person not elected to serve as both Vice President and President... and because political discussion is forbidden I cant tell you how lucky we are to have had him then. Carl Albert would have brought in our soon to be law healthcare system back in 1974 in all likelihood. Much of the hatred the press had for Ford at the time was because Nixon nominated Ford and he was confirmed before impeachment could go forward on Nixon. But really Albert was not motivated to push himself into office and the vitriol for Ford just carried forward. For having to put up with all that during his term of office... yes he deserves his name on a carrier.
I would push for it just because of the way he stood up to the CIA during the Warren Commission.
I really like his list of White House Chiefs of Staff
Haig
Rumsfeld
Cheney

By that reasoning, I want a USS Galactica...

He was President. Seems that right now, the carriers are being named after Presidents now. Would like to see the Navy to reuse the old carrier names on the new class coming up. Keep some tradion alive.

How can you pardon an innocent man hmmmmm

i'd lol

The USS Monica Lewinsky!
Paint it blue.
-

Exactly why Ford did it. A pardon carries the presumption of guilt and is the same as admitting guilt. Even Teddy Kennedy said he was upset at first and then later came to realize it was the best decision for the country.

A lot, if not all of the planes that launch and land on British carriers are and will be VTOL Harriers up until they are replaced by the F-35, also VTOL. Also, they are almost 100 meters longer than the class of ship they are replacing.

It was a joke, son :D

Give me some pocket money and I'll let you call me son.

Ha! If Rino is anything like me your going to work for money. :devil

Carriers are named after presidents correct or famous people. How about naming it USS Puller or USS Patton or even USS Yeager. All these people had significant roles in US history.
Think of who they were and you will realize I'm half way correct. These men have done more for this country and more notable than most would believe. IMHO I'm right...
-
Destroyers and frigates are currently named for military heroes (I think almost exclusively Navy and Marines) so USS Puller would be more appropriate for a destroyer or frigate (actually, there was one. She was an Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate in service until 1998 when she was sold to Egypt).
Nimitz-class carriers have been named for Presidents, one admiral, and several other politicians. Not "famous people." I'm not sure Patton or Yeager fit this convention.
The historical tradition for carriers is to name them after battles (IE Yorktown, Lexington, Midway) or previous famous ships (Enterprise, Hornet, Essex).
