Aces High Bulletin Board

The biggest knock on Aces High for me isn't 200, it's the lack of a pause button. I wouldn't have it any other way but we all know there are plenty of reasons for split attention and the "afk" blurb.
On one occasion I saw a squaddie climbing out afk into a few enemy fighters. Defending was futile. What if there was a way to enter formation flight with an allied aircraft? Pull up within D200 and type ".form Letalis" enabling the same formation logic seen in bombers? Mr Letalis could then steer wayward squaddie away from the mess of Rooks if needed and type ".rw" (release wingman) allowing afk squaddie to continue on his way merry way in the same mode he started in. Banking >say 45deg by either aircraft would also break up the formation. :salute

If the lead plane breaks hard, does the wingman explode? :devil

Seems like a reasonable price to pay for going AFK. If you get the chop, it's your own fault
That's my way of saying I think it's a bad idea :)

Yea, if you where flying an aircraft 10k in the air in WWII and left your plane to get your hot-pocket outta the microwave.......bad things would happen. :joystick:

Ya snooze ... ya lose.

afk kills are my only decent chance of taking a name in this game :D

Going AFK while in the air is a roll of the dice. If you need to leave your PC, either don't up or just deal with the consequences.
In your case, sounds like it would have been a fun fight to try to save your squaddie - if you pulled it off you'd be a hero; if not, at least you had a fight.

I did try to save him and it didn't end well. I was still 3.0 out when the con dove in and blasted him w plenty of smash to escape. No real chance for intervention at all. There are plenty of good reasons to leave the game for a few moments. We already use up a substantial amount of time simply flying to a fight. Waste more time simply NOT upping? Meh. Yes it's unrealistic to be flying formation while you're not "in" the cockpit but it's also unrealistic to be sleeping in a combat aircraft droning into enemy territory. Bottom line, it's a convenience that would mitigate the fact there is no pause button. Making the game slightly easier to play makes it no easier to master, your kills are safe :noid

Using a little sense works wonders. If you think you will need to be afk for more than 5 minutes, stay in tower. If you have already taken off and think you need to go afk, land if you're not far from the base. If you have already taken off and something comes up that you must go afk, turn your plane away from the fight and set the autopilot.

All valid points, but you estimate you won't arrive at the front for 5 minutes. I your wingman supposed to aim his plane elsewhere with you?

if you go afk for 5mins, you just quit being anyones wingman ...

If I'm going afk for any reason, regardless of how long I think I'll be, I tell my squadmates to proceed without me and I'll join them when I get back.

The idea looks cool, but not for fighters IMO. Perhaps if you are flying a bomber, sure it might work. If you go AFK into a fight, its your fault you got shot down.

Ya snooze ... ya lose.
:lol ditto

I just eject when/if I have to go AFK as long as no cons are near me.
Takes me streight back to the tower and I can reup when its time to rumble.

Years ago my wife not understanding anything about Aces High would demand I drop everything and pay attention to her when she entered the house from the end of her work day. Many arguments ensuied especially when I finally was in danger of having to leave a very expensive 262 on autopilot. The next day I changed over to my speakers for sound instead of my head set. Knowing when the wife usualy got home I had several squad members agree to help me.
Wife walks into the PC room.
Speakers up full.
I'm in formation and say wife over the mic.
Everyone breaks, flys in circles screaming on VOX about being killed.
I fly away on autopilot with them all screaming: your wife just killed us again.
Now days the wife likes knowing I'm home playing Aces High instead of hanging out at a bar......

I heard stories of the F6F and P-51 pilots in the pacific theater fly 2-3ft away from their wingman in order to be doing something and not fall asleep, during thous long mission. I think there is a reason no one heard stories of pilot actually falling asleep...

I've flown to 45k clear across a map AFK before. I think I came back and even killed someone who was AFK waaay behind their own lines.
:neener:
If you're dying, you must not be doing it right.

If your wingman is AFK they become the lead and you follow them. :old:
