Title says it all. Personally, mine is Steven Wright, the King of Surreal Stand-up.
-
Lewis Black, John Stuart, Robin Williams and not very well known irish comedian named crissan moran or something like that.
-
Lot of good ones, some of my favorites are: Eddie Izzard and Victor Borge. Far too many awesome comedians to list em all, but those are two of my personal favorites. :)

Mitch Hedberg R.I.P.
I knew I liked you, Mitch is a great choice. I also like Eddie Murphy's early stand up and Daniel Tosh's willingness to make fun of anyone for anything. I've also recently stumbled upon Louis CK. Funny stand up.
-
I can sit down and watch Gabriel Iglesies anytime he is on tv as well as Jeff Dunham.
Ive seen Dat Phan in person and is pretty good.
Also like watching the Blue Collar guys but not all that much of a fan of ron white.
-
Richard Pyor's concert film was about the only time in my life I felt like I was drowning from laughter - couldn't breathe in.
Eventually I managed to get one big raspy breath in, sounded like a donkey, before I lost it all laughing again.

Eddie Izzard, Lewis Black, Chris Farley, Buddy Hackett, Steve Harvey
-
Carlin, of course. Bill Hicks, Louis C.K., Eddie Izzard, Greg Giraldo, Daniel Tosh (really good stand up, aside from the show) Lewis Black, Mitch Hedberg, Steven Wright, Kevin Hart, Richard Pryor, more or less in that order I think. There are lots of good comedians, and tons of bad ones, and a very few great ones. I really hate a bad comedian, and a mediocre comedian is worse than a bad one even. But you have to wade through a lot of rock to get to a diamond.

Amen..... he is still performing in his 80s.
George Carlin is great too.
-
Looks like most of my favorites have been tossed out there already, Carlin, Hedberg, Izzard, Wright, I also really liked some of the stuff Bill Cosby has put out over the years.
Another favorite isn't exactly stand up but I usually found myself laughing anyway is Henry Rollins when he does a spoken word gig. I'd post some links but his language is, shall we say.... colorful? But I've always found him to be really entertaining.
-
Ron White
-
Recently Carlin, before him Andy Kaufman but they died.:(
I think all time, Red Skelton might have been the funnest man I have ever seen, he did it all, from stand up to slapstick ... those of you that never got to see Lenny Bruce or Mort Saul missed some of the very best.
-
i think if picking from currently living.......robin williams, and jeff dunham. they're really the only ones that've ever made me laugh like george carlin.......
-
Ron White, Lewis Black, Jim Gaffigan and Rodney Carrington.
-
Carlin.
Yeesh, took 12 posts for someone to toss out the greatest.
Actually, if you look a couple of posts above that one, you'll see that I listed him also.
Soulyss, I love Henry Rollins too, but he's not so much comedy, though he can be really really funny. Good call there man.

Wow... how could I have forgotten Red Skelton. I'd have to say he is my all time favorite.

The problem I have is that almost all of the comedians have gone through different phases, but all eventually wind up as cynical old bastages.
George Carlin was hilarious up until his last couple years. The cynicism was distracting.
As was Gallagher.
Robin Williams.. his early improv was scary funny..
Even Bill Cosby, one of my all time favorites, has shown some bitterness in his latest years. ( though he speaks good stuff.. just not comedy )
Most of the folks mentioned here have had some great moments, certainly.
Another one I haven't seen mentioned yet: Bob Newhart, and that whole Carol Burnette troupe.
Of course, the Monty Python group
Spike Jones..
The list could go on. Can't say I have a favorite.

Lewis Black, John Stuart, Robin Williams and not very well known irish comedian named crissan moran or something like that.
Dylan Moran i think you mean, he's great.

Jimmy Carr is the sickest guy I know, we like sick people in England for some reason.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ioBZ5fNJO8
Kevin Hart for someone I like that you guys might have heard of.

I mentioned Kevin Hart in my post a little while back, he's great, he really gets me laughing with his facial expressions sometimes. I don't know the other two you posted, but I'll check them out for sure, thanks.
Phatzo, good call on Connolly, I had all but forgotten about him.

as far as the art of pure stand-up..and it is an artform.... pound for pound...my favorite is Dennis Miller.
I'm not talking about his appearances on Fox news...or his radio show...or his monday night football stint...I'm talking pure live stand-up. and when Miller is on...he's the best.
conversely..and perhaps for personal reasons.....I also like the other end of the spectrum....and consider Brian Regan on of the best stand-ups in the business as well.
both these guys make me laugh...and I'm a tough audience.
-
Without a doubt my favorite all time Comedian is Bill Hicks.
My current favorite is Daniel Tosh.

hicks toward the last few years...did what APDrone alluded to above..and in many ways..because a parody of himself. I used to love hicks..especially when he was with the old houston outlaws gang of comics.

Yeah Brian Regan is really good, he does a great idiot character voice. That bit about the butterfly exhibit worker was great. I also like Dana Gould pretty well.

All of the above.
The only other one I can think of at the moment is Jon Reep. He does a bit about his dad going to fix the pool by using a backpack full of rocks and a garden hose for air that makes me cry every time.
-
Many very good comedians have been mentioned in this thread, but I would like to make one correction and an important distinction: Red Skelton was a Clown, not a comedian; he considered himself and conducted himself, as a Clown. Red Skelton was also a talented artist who painted many Clowns upon his easle.
My favorite Clown: Red Skelton
My favorite Comedian: Bill Cosby
My favorite Comedian Team: A tie between Laurel and Hardy and Abbot and Costello.
Comedians who use foul language to shock for laughs need to study the successes of the above.
-
Andy Kaufman...Everyone else is only half as funny.
-
Jeff Dunham 100%!
-BigBOBCH
-
Tim Wilson is also really funny. My dad use to have his CD...

I dig seeing everyone post such a wide spectrum of comedy talent that is being respected here. it's good stuff.
some of you that I fly with already know that I've spend my career in the entertainment business...mostly the comedy genre. I started in 1981 as a comedy booker..right when the comedy boom was taking off..and I somehow augmented into a comedy club owner..then as an agent...then publicist..then personal manager...it's been a great ride...but I have to say...getting back to the "wide spectrum thing"...one of the best times I ever had..is when I booked Henny Youngman...one of the original vaudeville and borche belt comics from the very beginnings of american comedy.
I got to spend a week with Henny. He was working several of my clubs..and I decided I wanted to hang with him..so I brought him to all his media appearances and the shows of course. Henny was really the last of the old old timers...and he was honestly a very sweet man. The stories he shared with me about jack benny, milton berle, and all those old timers were wonderful...and Henny was every bit..just a normal guy. He actually was the only marquee headliner I ever knew who still kept his name and number in the phone book. Henny was certainly getting up there in age..and his wife had long since passed and that took quite a toll on him. (she was the wife, in his famous "take my wife, please" bit). I actually had to hold his arms when he walked..and helped him up on stage..but once he was up there... he came alive..and needed no assistance. that was wonderful to see.....but more importantly...he still HAD IT. He DESTROYED every room he worked for me...and then he's sit in a chair and sell his books as the audience left...and every one of them wanted to talk to him. I never saw that in any other headliner I ever worked...but then again..I never worked any comics who had been around so long...and done so many things..as henny. always worked clean......and he was without a dount......king of the one liners. Another reason my times with Henny are so important to me..is that he was the only show I ever invited my parents to see. They loved it..my 85 year old mother still talks about it to this day.
therefore...I gotta add mr. henny youngman to my personal list.

Hey that's a great story man! I know he's one of the classics but haven't seen much of him except for the standard bits everyone has seen, and his bit in Goodfellas. I mostly know him by reputation really. What I have seen of him is that he's not my kind of comedian, but a legend is a legend and commands respect for what they have done. Here's a <S> to Henny, and just so you know, right now I'm super jealous of your job. I started seriously watching comedy when I was in middle school, I used to stay up all night when I was in school watching all the cable comedy shows I could find until I finally just dropped from exhaustion. I have a serous respect for comedy as an art form, like rhetoric, and not just a bunch of "men are like this...but women are like this... " kind of jokes. That's why I have such a hard time with a mediocre comedian, just seems intolerably unfunny to me. I used to want nothing more in the world than to be a good standup comic, but I discovered that I just don't have the tolerance for rejection that is necessary. Anyway, enough of the rambling, thanks for sharing your story, I really dug it!

Chris "Crazy Legs" Fonseca.
He has cerebral palsy and is wheel chair bound.
You will not find another funnier guy.
Do a search on him and you can easily find some of his "clean" stuff.

Agreed with most of the Above.....
But I have to add Carlos Mencia.... !

Richard Jeni (R.I.P.). "Platypus Man" or "The Boy From New York City" are pure gold.

Yeah I liked him, was sorry to see him end it like that. Platypus Man was a great special. Another really really excellent comedy special from back in the day was an almost unknown comedian that I really like is Jake Johannsen.
