Title: The hills are aliveee with the sound of screaming
Post by: pervert on August 23, 2010, 06:39:33 AM
Anyone noticed how many frigging hills are in this game now  :lol if I'm not hitting one myself I'm picking up proxys from other poor saps meeting the hard side of the country side. Who made this map?? How long did you spend making millions of little hills??  :lol

Wait until you see the MA map I'm working on.  BnZers will swoop in but they won't swoop out. :devil

I love flying low n slow into the death bowls in Blue. Usually the BnZers don't even notice the huge hill.

They are not so much hills as canyons - lots of canyons.  The highest peaks are at 5k and most air bases are 2-5k.  I figured on cutting out all the climbing (unless you want to) and being able to dive for airspeed right off the end of the runway.  Most towns and V bases will be in the 0 to 1k range.  NOEs will be nigh impossible inland from the perimeter bases, so a country can gain a foothold that way but it gets tougher inland.  Bnzers can still vulch but if they venture to pick in the canyons, it will be a dicey proposition.

Considering the 190D has a turn radius of about a half mile I'm dead against these canyons  :D

That sounds like a terrible map honestly.  There's already one like it and it sucks.

The fact that you think a map that supports basically one playstyle is ironic considering the signature you have.

Sounds like it would be fun for base captures and it cuts down on picking at least the stupid pickers you aren't mad because you are one of those are you>

Thanks, I will need it to survive the aneurism that I will get from making it.   :furious   I'm calling it PITA for obvious reasons.

Just started it a week ago and still have a ton of terrain work to do, but you get the idea.

It's my first attempt and may turn out to be the worst map ever made.  :D
You are welcome to make a better one of course.

There will be many spawn options to keep defenders on their toes and hopefully spread things out a bit.

Did I mention I crashed twice because I had to glide into a base on a plateau and rolled right off the stupid runway and over a cliff?

Looked something like this:

I fly the F4U-1A 90% of the time.  I lean towards energy fighting tactics because that is what the plane is best at.  That said, I'm not afraid to get in a turning engagement in it in the right situation.  What I try to avoid at all costs is getting into a turning engagement at low altitudes with lots of enemy cons around because the plane does not climb or accelerate well.  If I get low and slow in it, I'm in a heap of trouble so yeah, I can't imagine a map I would dislike more than something with a bunch of high walled canyons that basically lock you into a furball once you enter it.  Looking at that screenshot in the terrain editor confirms my suspicions.

On a side note, some T&B style pilots seem to whine a lot.  I point them out in particular because you seldom if ever hear an energy fighting proponent complain about targets turning to avoid them but T&B guys often complain about getting B&Zed.  It's been that way in way in every game I've played.  In Fighter Ace they used to call people that wouldn't play their game cowards.  Here they call them 'pickers' apparently.  WW2OL probably had the least complaining in it; none of the allies expected the axis guys to try to turn fight them but they still referred to the axis planes as the run90 and run09.  I'm real sorry if you like to fly a plane that has nothing going for it other than turn radius but I'm not going to try to beat you at that game just because you'd like me to do so.

Hattrick,

You dont give yourself enough credit....I've seen you fly that bird low and slow...in fact, I think it was Sat night.  Make the canyons work FOR you, not against you.  I love the map...but I learned to fly in the canyons in the DA too so they don't bother me much.  Besides, that 1A will out-turn anything in the game 3 times...after that, the canyon walls wont be your friend if there are other cons around...if you are alone with your bogey?...you will slay them.

Turn radius planes exist in different forms and levels.  The Spixteen does absolutely nothing great...it just does a whole bunch of stuff pretty good...if you like the 1A, I would sure think you would love the KI-84 and I have had my butt caught in a CHOG by an 84 many a time and been outturned by an 84 while in a Spit9...just sayin there are other planes.  You must be a Pappy Boyington fan... :salute

Hey Changeup, thanks for the compliment.  I give full credit to BigRat though.  Had one hour of 'Hog Basic' with him and it greatly expanded my horizons on what I can do with the aircraft.  I still don't like getting low and slow in it though.  Whenever I do, I see this egg timer in my mind's eye and the sand running through it represents my time left to get out of that situation or die, lol.  I like getting kills but I hate not bringing my plane home even more than I like getting kills so I definitely avoid situations that I'm sure will result in my death :P  I guess what got my hackles up about this map is that one of the creator's stated purposes is to curb B&Z tactics and that just rubs me the wrong way haha.

As for why I prefer the Corsair, it's kind of like a good woman to me.  I was attracted to it because of the looks and stayed with it because it fits well with my style of doing things  :D  Seriously though, I've always been an energy fighter since I learned that banking 90 degrees and yanking the stick back as far as I could didn't win many fights.  My favorite airframes reflect that to an extent:  FW190, F4U, P47.  I'm working on getting good in the Corsair and then I will start working on the Jug probably.  I already sneak in a few 190A-5 sorties (love that plane) here and there but usually just when I am looking for a change of pace.

I love all those deep holes. When I gotta run, 'cause I've got a tighter turning ftr on my tail, I can usually fly one or two into the dirt diving and clipping tree-tops.    beat getting smoked.
General Horn USAF got a medal in NAM as a Lt. for killing a Mig-21 that way in an RF-4C reconnaissance plane w/o guns.

How dare I have a different opinion than someone who has played AH for how long...?  Perhaps you should make a map and show us all how it's done.
