Have you heard anybody used this phrase "red herring" before? What dose it mean and when do you used it?
-
Isn't that the same thing as a "Wild goose chase"?

A red herring is a misdirection. You see it a lot in crime books and movies to draw attention away from the ACTUAL culprit by having evidence or circumstances that seems to point to another character instead.
-
It's misdirection. It's when someone brings something up to distract people from an issue that is more important.

My grandmother died from cancer due to years and years of smoking. She died in pain, she was coughing up blood the last few days of her life...she was weezing and going in and out with a daze. Halucinations took over and she saw her already dead relatives... Thats why birth control is important.

Complete myth and no evidence for this whatsoever (which I guess makes this statement in of itself a red herring).
