Have you heard anybody used this phrase "red herring" before?  What dose it mean and when do you used it?

I do not know!  I seen this etiology (if that is what you cal it) twice.

A red herring is a misdirection. You see it a lot in crime books and movies to draw attention away from the ACTUAL culprit by having evidence or circumstances that seems to point to another character instead.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

It's misdirection.  It's when someone brings something up to distract people from an issue that is more important.

My grandmother died from cancer due to years and years of smoking. She died in pain, she was coughing up blood the last few days of her life...she was weezing and going in and out with a daze. Halucinations took over and she saw her already dead relatives... Thats why birth control is important.

Wow... It took me a minute to get that this was an example... Either way, pretty gruesome.

Refers to the old practice of trainging bloodhounds to track missing persons by dragging red herrings across the paths of the hounds to try to thro them off the scent.
