This is exactly why the squirrels are there for your protection!

  The bracketed word doesn't belong.

Ok I'll bite -

This phrase always gets my goat. Of course it makes a sound. What, the laws of physics suddenly stop working when nobody is there? A lack of presence doesn't negate the sound created. Anyhoo glad I got that off my chest  :aok

This is true, It should. The problem here is that one can not provide evidence, as there is no suitable experiment.

They are, they sag, er, migrate south with age.

As to the original post; sound is how an ear interprets the vibrations in the surrounding environment.  The tree doesn't make a sound, but it will create vibrations in the air and ground.  If nobody is there to "hear" it, then the answer should be no.

If a man speaks, and there is no woman around to hear him, is he still wrong?

Thats a lie you put a camera watching it and when one randomly falls it records the noise when no one is around to hear it.

I agree that the tree technically does not make the sound, however the sound vibrations that it creates are still there therefore the sound exists.

No, it does not make a sound.  It does compress the air which are interpreted as sound only if someone or something is there to hear it.

Now if a bear is there, and near the tree as it falls, it would hear it.

..and likely crap in the woods. :x

There is a old saying by a Native American tribe in the northwest.  If a needle falls off the tree, the bear will smell it, the deer would hear it and the eagle would see it.
