Can we get some specs on this thing? I feel like a PBY Catalina would perform better than this thing.

Looks like they took an airboat from Florida, added some styrofoam to give it a cover :rofl
<S> Oz

If it's got some sort of stealth tech, and can deliver a weapon that could harm a Navy vessel then I'd be worried. Obviously not much of a fighter threat, and the article only mentions machine guys so it's probably not very useful for anything but recon.
-
AHAHHAHAHA!! IRAN is STUPID! that piece a junk wud set off radar in UFO land even hahha no stealth tec in that. i give it a FFAAIILLL!!!

Funny, It looks like the German RFB X-114 which first flew in 1977.

Any vehicle can be dangerous. Even a cesna loaded with explosives can possibly make it to a naval vesel. Not likely but always possible.
When it is your keester sitting on the possible receiving end you'll pay a little more attention and not right off anything.

I agree that any vehicle can be dangerous, I just don't think it registers on the threat meter like some other aircraft or missiles.
I would like to know what a navy person thought about the chances of a Cessna making it to a boat w/o being detected. I would think there'd be no chance.

The chances of anything happening are never 0 %. :D

I'm partial to video of it from back in 2006.
http://www.spike.com/video/irans-flying-boats/2719513
"Velocities of over 100 KPH" (which is below the posted speed limit on most US interstates).
"Unparalleled maneuvering capabilities" as they show it roaring along at a whopping 45 miles an hour, nose up and wallowing in a straight line.
"Undetectable by any naval or aerial radar" with an exposed piston engine and spinning prop sitting on a strut atop the fuselage.
"The ability to soar swiftly over the sea"- see above top speed.
"Has the ability to fire while moving", because lord knows we've spent the last century trying to figure out how to get planes to shoot stuff without having to stop first.
Yeah, I'm scared.

You Sir need to send a thank you note to the cleaning lady that just had to come in my office for that one.

Looks like an express ride to heaven for the squadrons of true believers. :aok

They are going to need more virgins.
-
i can see that those would be stealthy...
if there was no radar around :rofl
-
"unparalleled maneuvering capabilities" doesn't mean the same thing as unserpassed maneuvering capabilities; so it could be that the maneuvering sucks so much that nothing else comes close to the same level of suckage. :devil
-
If we ever get into a tangle with them, we should downgrade our AC back to WW2 or Korean era, just to be fair :rofl

"Now the reports of our new aircraft being supersonic, able to carry twice the load of a B52, able to carry nuclear weapons, and complete immune to radar are all true. In fact, I would say that these rumors have been minimizing their overall capability."
-

Without elaborating, there certainly is the capability which would assure a 0% chance; however and unfortuantly there is a human factor that could allow 100% chance.

Do you remember the 19 year old that flew a Cessna from Hamburg to Moscow and landed in Red Square?

Agreed.
Although Im pretty sure the sea wiz would laugh at it too.

I'd like one for hooning around our coastlines and lakes.

The most deadly thing to do is underestimate something based on looks alone. That thing in the hands of suicidal crazy person is extremely deadly. Strap a bomb or a nuclear device to it, kamikaze it in to a fleet and that would be all she wrote.
Maybe thats what they want us to do. Lets all laugh it up and point our fingers shaking our heads. While we're doing that, Theyre laughing at us for not taking it serious. There is a reason it dont look like much.

US Naval vessels with the Phalanx 20mm gatlin gun would turn that thing into shreads if it went near them.
The Iranian Army also employs mo-peds and 100cc motorcycles as "military vehicles". :rofl :rofl :rofl

the went to Germany's army surplus store for those V-1's

With the advent and advancement of drone and missle/antimissle technology I think the fighter aircraft and to a certain extent manned strike aircraft are headed the way of the dodo bird or the chariot. With both being all but extinct in our lifetimes cept maybe for some third world countries. I can easily foresee a time when manned combat jet aircraft simply arent needed anymore but for nostalgic reasons and to a large extent havng a human in an aircraft more a hindrance then an asset.
Its approaching the point where its simply not going to be practical to put a man in a combat jet

i thought they built it using sheet metal, elmer's glue, and JP-7?

For the most part the only limitations to flight now are the human element.

I almost forgot how much I liked that guy. "We met the Americans at the airport and they were slaughtered....." Laughed my arse off knowing 3rd ID and the Marines were knocking the door to Baghdad down at that very moment.

What you have to remember is that this type of press is meant for internal consumption. North Koreans suffer from the same stuff with those missile tests. In the face of western technology that has leaped their conventional technology, they have to have something for propaganda purposes. We get a big chuckle out of it, but for the ruling powers that be in those two countries, they have to show their respective internal political bases that they are developing counters to what we have, no matter how ludicrous they look to us. Sad really...
-
They also have state of the art armored vehicles
(http://wzus1.ask.com/r?t=a&d=us&s=a&c=p&ti=1&ai=30752&l=dis&o=15527&sv=0a5c4042&ip=6389f1dd&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwio.ru%2Ftank%2Fww1t%2Fft17.jpg)
Highly reliable off-road vehicles.

Don't forget top of the line UAVs!

You lot remember the USS COLE?.
That wasn't attacked by anything high-tech.....never under estimate your enemies.

These idiots dont realize that. Its all funny till we lose our soldiers to some skitzo on a suicide mission. Then, will they laugh?
Anything ANY military makes is made with the intent on taking lives if need be. I personally dont find anything funny about that.
-
Well, I suppose I could pee my pants over a glorified Lake amphibian, but I'm confident that our
guys are up to the challenge. Think it's not possible to learn lessons from military setbacks? Anyone
remember the difference between Vietnam and Desert Storm?
Mr Imadinnerjacket and the rest of the Ayatollahs learned a long time ago not to mess with the US.
They're top notch when it comes to taking embassies and attacking unarmed tankers in the gulf, but
give them an opponent tougher than Iraq and they prefer to fight by proxy. They also have alot of
trouble trying to control their increasingly progressive and young population.
Just because someone doesn't agree with you doesn't necessarily make them an idiot, sport.

Speaking of which, are ya'll following the UFO thread? :D

Which is even worse, since that means it can't get more than 10-20 feet above the surface and if it banks too sharply it will lose the cushion. Now I'm even LESS impressed, thanks Russian. :aok
-
Even if we do take it seriously so what?
They dont need this flying boat to be effective. They can use jet. Or better yet without wasting an aircraft they can simply put a vest on and walk up to a ecp on a base and achieve the same effect. The fact Iran is promoting this to be their next super weapon is a joke.

Am I the only one thinking of this when I first read this story:

?

Its so CUTE!!! :rofl
See, the vehicle itself can be useful, I'm sure. It's great as a civil platform for police surveillance, etc. What makes it funny are statements like this: "Islamic Republic of Iran is one of the few countries which managed to design, build and use flying boats in a short time," said Defense Minister Brig. Gen. Ahmad Vahidi
-
I would have a ball shooting those things down like skeet.
