Would like the paratroopers to be updated. I understand that it isn't going to change game play, but I think it would have an impact for those who make movies. Think about it, what would look better, the stack of cardboard boxes we have right now that siege a town with just pistols, or actual troops? Animation doesn't need to be real flashy but would like a cosmetic touchup to them.
Hell, for fun, you could even put faces from the developers on them.
...On second thought, I prefer to sleep at night. :lol

update the plane itself before the troops! :old:

They supposedly mentioned at the CON that new troops are on the way.
FYI
-
I think it would be great if all the troops looked like Mr. Hankey :t
-
It would be really neat of the troops would match the vehicle in which they are being deployed from. For example, the LVT2 could have US Marines, the M3 could have US (or Soviet) infantry, the C47 could have British paras, the Sdkfz 251 German infantry; and the jeep a few khaki clad British LRRP commandos from North Africa.
Anything would be better than the pilots posing as infantry we have now. :)

What about US paras? also, I know the Japanese had a DC-3, did they use it for airborne ops?

I like the idea. Maybe we can just have one model of trooper, but a few player-made skins for them?

I've always thought it was kind of silly that a pilot hiding in the map room could take out a group of 10 paras. Fun to do when you know it'll thwart a capture attempt, but silly nonetheless.

We can always throw a grenade, or maybe he has a 9th manned ack in their :noid

It was mainly used as a troop transport but not for airborne operations. The Mitsubishi Ki.57 Type 100 was the IJAF's primary troop transport that was also their primary transport for airborne operations.

I vouched for British paras because of them being the best airborn troops in the world (then and now). ;) Otherwise, I matched the troops with the vehicle.
The Japanese used a version of the DC-2, iirc. Very close to the DC-3 (close enouhg for HTC to allow a skn), but not exact.

Only a single example was pressed into service by the Japanese, the Japanese however did have over 400 licensed built DC-3s that were used as supply and personel transport but not airborne operations.

Some troop-type ideas: -
1. Dropping troops near a Shore Battery and they take it out instead of running to the town.
2. Dropping troops near a Field and they take out an AA gun instead of running to the town.
3. Dropping troops on enemy troops and they all stop and shoot it out until last man standing.
4. We have pill boxes, m/g nests that need to be occupied by friendly troops. However, like Vehicle Supplies, this effect doesn't last long.
-- Dropping your own troops in own town, on own field or on own Shore Battery poulates the pill boxes, m/g nests to defend against enemy troops.
6. Perked 'Special Forces' can be given a specific military target - i.e. defensive gun, Radar or a Bomber/Fighter/Vehicle Hanger and they take it out if they survive.
-
Special Forces sounds pretty awesome, however i highly doubt that it will ever happen :frown:
-
We need troops modeled after the man, the myth, the legend...
-
then you'd only need one per country :)
-
Read 'Commandos' rather than special forces <sigh>

these are all great ideas, but my fear is that this game would turn into a shooter game instead of a flight sim that way

you could drop 1 Chuck Norris and take over a whole country :rock

I think it would be kind of neat, that way you actually need to drop a ton of paratroopers to take a town, then you can help out your paratroopers by doing strafing runs on the enemy lines! :devil
ALL OUT WAAAAARRRRR! :x
That was the ONE aspect of WWII Online air combat that I loved... Strafing runs... Hehehehe... :joystick:

I don't think it'll change the game too much - you're just targetting the troops at something more specific.
A commando raid from a boat or LVT to take out a shore battery should be relatively easy to engineer - even using the stiff guys we have now.
Hopefully the graphics won't be too much of a problem, they're either running or they're lying down on the ground shooting (although kneeling and standing would be nice, I'm not sure how easy it is for the program to decide which pose to take). Movement should only take place over level ground, so no house/tree hopping anymore (please).
A nice touch would be - when 'our' troops encounter 'their' troops, both sides hit the dirt for a fire fight. As time ticks by each side loses a man. Every now and then a coloured smoke pot could indicate a 'request for a strike' on the enemy - and that could be automated too. That would be great for the F4 Corsairs and other mud thumpers.
However, I have concerns about players putting too many troops into a single location just to see the fight. The server would have its work cut out trying to coordinate even the dumb troops and us tankers must see the same troops in the same locations - so I'm guessing that some sort of local limit count on the troops would be needed. The devil's in the detail.

Apparently the servers have a lot of headroom. Someone said that at peak play times, the servers hardly ever very much processor usage. I think this would be cool as well.
I'd mostly like to see them move as squads, as opposed to running in a stupid line...

So, is there a bottleneck in the comms? I hope not. I notice when upping from a carrier, if my mates also spawn at the same time then their planes sometimes appear to be spawning in mid-air away from the flightdeck. I assume this is a lag / other time related issue.
I figure the troops' positions would be managed on the server but the actual rendering would have to be done locally. So people might complain if their PCs started chugging when trying to render an Airborne brigade invading a field.

It shouldn't be any harder for your computer to render than any other objects in the game. Might even be easier, since they are so small.

It's not the size so much as the complexity. If you have a scene with lots of trees/buildings the computer not only has to draw them but it has to figure out which bits not to draw because they're hidden - from your point of view. Then comes the shadows. On top of that you overlay several dozen figures which move and also have to be oriented properly. There are several cheats one can use, but believe me, rendering 3D scenes in real time isn't easy, which is why 3D graphics cards have their own computers built-in. Lower end machines would find it difficult to cope, frame rate could plummet if several dozen troops ran across your path into some trees.

I am aware of how 3D graphics are rendered, but I think you are assuming that these new troops would be some super-high count polygon ultra real models (I SEE ACNE!!!).
If you are running AHII right now, trees, tanks, planes, buildings, and all (even at lowest settings), your computer is probably going to handle 10 or 20 troops with a higher polygon count than we currently have. I imagine if new troops made a computer chug, then dogfights must make it cry.
-
hey pigs. i wrote the same thing about the troops in 2006 or 2007. i said something to the effect.make them look a little more real. with the Thomson 45,the m1
gerande,or the 30carbine. instead of a 45 pistol.and make them look like there real running to the map room with a rifle in there hands. here's the pic's i posted before.

and when they jump out of the plane make them look kinda real.

Dogfight with 30/40 planes in the air at some distance from the ground is OK, but within 500yds amongst the trees and you probably will have a frame rate problem. My point is that dropping lots of troops into a small space could hit the lower end machines if/when they try to render it all. Some guys are bound to run a mission of 10 goons - 100 hundred troops - or even more.

Those 30/40 planes probably have the same (if not more) number of polygons combined than 1000 of our current troops. Not to mention much higher-res textures.
Either way, technological obsolescence will occur at some point, unfortunately.
Also, don't forget about the Level of Detail system. Unless all 100 troops are surrounding your tank at close range, their resolution will not be nearly as high.

Our troops move as a squad, ever watch Tour of Duty? :bolt
-
This could all be avoided by making the Call of Duty style skins optional. You would simply have the level of rendering tied into your graphics slider.
